Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

What is worrying me now is the spokon situation in Jump. What will happen if Haikyuu truly ends when the current game ends? I guess we will have a spokon just after Haikyuu ending, but for safe measures I'd have prefered the spokon being serialized before Haikyuu ending.

On the other hand I'm really interested in Yabuki's manga. We know Yabuki has done a lot of stuff, but this is the first manga he's the writter since Black Cat, 20 years ago.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I'm trying do to a list to see what author has had the biggest year gap between his first series in WSJ and his last series.

Yabuki first series was in 1999, his last one in 2020 - 21 years gap.
Kishimoto - 1999-2019 - 20 years
Inagaki - 2003-2017 - 14 years
Kurumada - 1974-1992 - 18 years
Motomiya - 1968 - 1986 - 18 years
Katsura - 1983-1997 - 14 years
Yoichi Takahashi - 1981-1999 - 18 years
Miyashita - 1978-1994 - 17 years
Morita - 1988-2005 - 17 years

PS: Araki if we separate JoJo in the 6 parts would be 1983 - 2004, also 21 years. I'm not inclined to separate Jojo though
PS2: Dunno if counting Jaco or The Comiq If I count The Comiq, Kazuki Takahashi 1991-2018 27 years. If I count Jaco, Toriyama 1980-2013 33 years
I completely forgot that Obata made Gakkyu Hotei in 2015. Since Obata's first manga in WSJ was in 1989, he is actually at 26 years and not at 19 years. So if you're not counting The Comiq, Jaco and the later JoJo parts, then Obata had the biggest gap between his first and last series.

I am more interested in Yabuki coming back, even though I prefer Kubo.
The main reason is that I did not expect that. Then, I hope it will not be just an ecchi serie like TLR, but something closer to Black Cat.

While I’m personally more hyped for Kubo due to the fact I know what I’m hyped for kabuki’s new series. Black cat is a personal favorite of mine (I know he only drawn the manga but the fights are pretty amazing to) and I due feel it is underrated in the west. I just hope the ecchi in the series is a secondary factor and he focuses on action because he is good at making fight scenes.

Voted for Yabuki too. We know what Kubo is going to provide and also that it will be a short-series. Meanwhile, Yabuki could provide a long series (if not axed) and we don't know what he's going to do.

I remember Ryuuhei return was very hyped when Hungry Marie happened but right now it isn't being very hyped, partly because Hungry Marie flop, partly because Yabuki overshadowing him. I'm curious since he seems is back to the Beelzebub formula

Yabuki actually is also the writer for Black Cat. It was in To Love Ru case that he was only the artist.

Voted for Tamura since I still have a soft spot for Beelzebub, nevertheless Yabuki has me hyped

I chose Yabuki because I loved Black cat. I trust him.

I'm now interested in how many people will comment on Neverland, given the fact that the series' impact started way earlier compared to series like Kimetsu and has been one of the faces of the magazine for most of its run.
I can see Wani leaving a comment and KnY's twitter will post it.

And is ecchi series vital in their lineup?
It's a staple they like to have, but it isn't vital. They'll make do with fan service in other series if they have to.

They always try to have at least a romcom of some kind, though it's not always ecchi and they've had gaps of a year or two between romcom hits a few times. Ecchi stuff is kind of a vital jump thing though yeah even if they don't always have one (they did pretty much invent the genre after all).

We've been lucky this past decade though with no gaps between Nisekoi->Yuuna->WNL, hopefully Yabuki's new series does well too so that we can continue the chain.

Only 8 more weeks till Togashi meets his record......YOU CAN "DO" IT!
Meanwhile, HxH is still receiving 30 000 views a month on M+ (more than 3 times as much as Mitama), despite never having been updated ever.

I honestly don't understand why. Aren't people bored of reading the same 6 chapters yet? Are there still that many newbies coming in trying the manga for the first time? Or are there actually groups that have been bumping the series for the last 18 months? :blink

So just went to check my Jump Bookstore and found out I had Jump GIGA Summer 2019 Volume 3. So here's God of Destruction Magu-chan One-Shot. For those wondering, yeah, it's pretty much comedy. Not gag I'd say, even if it can go that way in the serialization. Overall feels like an interesting concept but the execution doesn't satisfy me that much. Hoping it has been polished enough for when it starts in Jump.

I want to ask the difference between a comedy manga and a gag manga, but the last time someone did, there was a huge debate. I think I know the difference, but I'm not sure.

IMO, a gag would be a series in which each chapter revolves around some dumb idea, doesn't need to be logical at all to be funny, and is just the same formula weekly, but trying to deliver something funny of course. I'd say in the magazine those that we have are AGRAVITY BOYS, Moriking and Mitama.

As for a comedy series, I'd say these focus in some other stuff more frequently than gags, as in plot or action stuff. I'd say Yozakura is the perfect example for this, because I can't really call it a gag at all, but a Slice of Life series that keeps up its action and plot more often than other series.

Migi/Parasyte vibes from that little creature. Looking forward to it.

Fun fact, we're currently in the longest ever romcom/ecchi chain in WSJ's history by quite a bit (longest amount of time with no gaps between one hit ending and the next starting), about 9 years from Nisekoi starting to when WNL will end.

In fact, there's only ever been two chains before in WSJ (that I can see), there's almost always a gap between hits ending and starting. Only others are

Harenchi Gakuen -> Arashi! San-piki (1968 to 1973)
Stop! Hibari-kun -> Wing-man -> Kimagure Orange Road (1981 to 1987)
