Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Things have been a bit slow, so I wanted to make a random observation:

We are about two months from the first anniversary of Mission: Yozakura Family. Like... it's going to outlast Samurai 8, despite selling less initially.

With Neverland and Yuuna gone, there's only 9 mainstays in the magazine (not counting Hunter x Hunter). Out of 20 spots. Over half the magazine's going made up of new, unproven series looking to make a name for themselves. It's an observation we've all made already, but I just personally find it extremely exciting. My favorite part of Jump, ever since I learned about it in 2017 is seeing all these new series come and take a shot at sticking around. It's like it's own battle royale, where you can pick some manga to really root for in order to beat the odds and survive, only magnified to an extent beyond even 2016. You never know who might win - I didn't think Chainsaw Man or Act-Age would survive here, but here they still are, coming into their own as the mid-2010 series begin to wither a bit.

I wonder who you guys are/will be rooting for, out of the 11 new-ish series that'll be vying for survival. Personally, I can see MASHLE and Ayakashi making it, but you've also got Undead Unluck holding it's own, Yozakura managing to defy the odds, and even Moriking looking to start strong. It's all so fascinating, and it's really nice discussing this with ya'll.
It can be even funnier at end of year with WNL and potentially Haikyuu over:
-7 veterans, 13 newbies (Should we still count Yozakura as a newbie though?)
-My Hero Academia being the 2nd oldest Jump title
-My Hero academia being the only +300 seller (not counting One Piece)
-Act-age being the fifth longest Jump manga

I just hope we get a new spokon and not more gags, 7 gags in the roster are enough gags. A new romcom too since Ayakashi Triangle is more action less rom than expected

The big winner for me in this current situation is My Hero Academia: it gets back safely the spot of "main Jump pillar with One Piece", and it closest competition would be Jujutsu Kaisen

So if....
Yuuna->Ayakishi
Neverland-> Hakaishin Maguchan
And then perhaps it's
GoTW->Shakunetsu no Niraikanai....
Then......
Which spot is Boku to Roboko replacing.....?

I wonder if by the next group cover they’ll just go “fuck it, Taiyo gets to be a little bit bigger” though in that case id expect Andy and Mash to be in the higher tier of newbies with him too.

Most people have been saying Agravity or Mitama. I think Agravity will survive but who knows.

Yusuke Murata did a One-Shot because of the launch of Jump Super Stars.

Are you seriously telling me this isn’t fan made. Where was the oneshot published.

I'm guessing it was from here:

It's a Jump Comics Special Edition for those who purchased the game early. It's pretty old, so I can't be really sure about the source.

This constant gag complain makes me think you guys couldnt have liked 70s Jump.
Or even early 2010s jump for that matter. There's usually 4-5 gag manga ongoing at a time.

The only difference now is that we're getting all of them translated so people actually notice how many there are, while before we'd only get the action-gag stuff.

The shift from jump authors appearing on the magazine cover to us not knowing if an author is a man/woman is really something.

Also the 4th guy (the one with shades) looks like the kind of person who steals your wife then calls to tell you about it :hip Reminds me of that one tite Kubo picture I saw

Some people just don't like gag manga, people are free to express their opinion nothing wrong with that.

When we really look carefully, the only actual current gags right now are Mitama, Moriking and Agravity.

The other 70s thing that was a Jump staple was the baseball manga. Captain Tsubasa was the first big not-baseball spokon in Jump, but before it we had Play Ball, Astro Kyudan, Samurai Giants, etc.

This made me think. Imagine the next Jump spokon is a baseball manga, of very good quality. If that happens, the reaction in Japan would be big (Japan two main sports are baseball and football). But how would the reception be in West, being a baseball manga? Thinking this knowing Ace of Diamond for example has fanbase. Or Touch or Major.

I'm really wanting to see what will the next spokon be and what sport will it be. The only succesful spokon we have had lately would be Blue Lock (WSM). And Shuudan was really good, it still pains me the axe.

sure but a lot of people are acting like it's "Nak" ruining Jump with gags when he clearly isn't doing anything new. As tirakai stated we just know about them all now.

Talking about classic jump, I would love some classical like series on jump though. Like black comedies, hard boil vigilante, yankee, and high testosterone battle manga. I’ve been reading a lot of classic 60s- early 90s jump manga and I actually really enjoy the classical jump style just as much as the newer jump.

I think another thing that would be cool is an outer zone like manga. An episodic horror manga that deals with many modern problems people in Japan face. Also jump needs to make a lacrosse manga as that is the best sport for blue lock like spokon. I feel the reason the lacrosse manga failed was because it had to compete with KNB and HQ.

Caved and read spoilers for AT:

I’ll need to read this to get the full picture tomorrow, but right now, I’m seriously intrigued by this. Chapter 2 or 3 are gonna be really crucial to my opinion of the series. Here’s hoping the slice-of-life bits are more like the one-shot.

I hope Yabuki can find a balance with the ecchi elements. I hear that there isn’t much of it in chapter 1, but that could still be enough to drive potential readers away.

I want to like this manga and see it succeed. here’s hoping the next two episodes really sell me on it.
