Yeah, just like Spy x Family, I feel like this is a huge missed opportunity that they didn't run it in the main magazine. Especially because this is apparently weekly unlike Spy x Family.
I’m sure they want Jump+ to have hit series and “Pillars” just like the Main Magazine. If all their big successes from Jump+ were in the main magazine than Jump+ wouldn’t have and big successes.

Sure, but the series would have even more exposure in the main magazine and might sell even better. Though I get that they also want to have successes in Jump+.

This statement is full of hindsight.
Do you think WSJ target, young boys and people want to enjoy stuff made for young boys (aka manchildren) would read a story about a working class person who failed his dream and do a menial job? Also remember Ziga?
Kaiju 8 and SxF success are partially because of the platform they are in.
Jump+ is no longer a spin off or an extension of WSJ. It's its own platform, just like Jump SQ. And it deserves every bit of respect for every success series run on it. They are property of Jump+, and should never be considered to move or "return" to WSJ.
Chapter 2 of Kaijuu No. 8 was very funny. I loved the interactions Kafka had with everyone especially Ichikawa as a Kaijuu. another Really good chapter I would say. Hopefully it doesn’t dip in quality in the next few chapters.

Agreed, the fact that people still talk about Jump+ as if it was a dumping grounds for WSJ rejects is pretty disrespectful. It's its own platform with its own hits and audience, not a "secondary" platform where they send what they don't think is good enough for WSJ. Like, wtf?

dont know if anyone predicted SxF exploding in popularity. It could easily have failed. Every series is a risk.
hard to take comments about "missed opportunity" seriously when theres a whole list of failures one could point too to show the unpredictability of likeability.
im sure people are saying kaiju is a missed opportunity.
This Kaiju No. 8 chapter was hilarious and heartwarming, while filled with good action and great art. That color page was amazing.
Fastest I’ve been invested in a character since SHY and HeroAca. Follow your fucking dream, Kafka. Return to your childhood friend’s side and fight together as one.
Id really like to know more about Mina soon, and how she feels after all these years. The hint of it that we got really intrigued me.
Honestly, it would be nice if this was a hit, but I want this to at least survive.

Is Shonen Jump more exposure? You have to actually buy the magazine and if there's nothing you currently care about or are caught up on why would you do that for a new series? On Jump+ you just see a new series and can immediately read it then and there. You hear about a new series on social media or from your friends and can immediately read it instead of running out or buying a digital copy of Jump.
Even if someone has a copy of Jump there's no guarantee they'll read a new series and even if they read and enjoy it there's no guarantee they'll buy the volume just because they suddenly enjoyed it in a magazine rather than on a website.

It’s about the branding, imo. When you hear a manga from THE “Weekly Shonen Jump” making waves rather than simply Jump+ , the latter might not have the same impact and even if it does, it’s a toss-up if it could reach the kind of impact the main magazine could do for the series. Make no mistake, the buzz so far is amazing, but as for the kind of waves it would make if it was in the main magazine, I’m inclined to lean into it making a bigger wave, if not a modest increase from being serialized in Jump+.

No, I meant SHY. Thundercat explained it well. I need to catch up to it soon, loved the first chapter.
That being said, I also need to read Spy x Family really soon. Heard almost nothing but good things about it.

I feel like people outside Japan care more about THE "Weekly Shonen Jump" branding than those inside Japan. Look at the Japanese covers for say Yozakura and Spy x Family (just since both spy comedy series that started around the same time) if you didn't specifically know one was in Shonen Jump and one in Jump+ there's no indication of that. Both are in the same "Jump Comics" imprint as well.
I just feel a lot of people downplay digital manga for some reason when it's clearly showing growth. There's nothing wrong with companies trying to build a digital platform with successful series of its own.

Good point, actually. I didn't really consider the age of the MC and just considered that both are essentially shonen magazines. But I guess Jump+ has an older audience on average because you can only read the manga online. So I guess they publish shounen manga that might be more popular for older audiences in Jump+, but are still fundamentally shounen. Then again, it makes me wonder why Chainsaw Man ended up getting serialized in Jump and not in Jump+ or even in Young Jump.
Also, I didn't mean to say that any series should move or "return" to Jump. I think it's usually best for a series to stay in its magazine if it's doing well and is really popular. Moving magazines should really only be considered, if a manga isn't popular enough to continue in a magazine, but still popular enough to let it continue elsewhere. Or if a mangaka wants to switch from a weekly schedule to a biweekly or monthly schedule in a different magazine for health reasons. Or some special cases like Gintama, where the manga is simply ending in another magazine. There are probably other reasons that just don't come to my mind right now, but that would probably be the main reasons for a manga to move to a different magazine.

Tbf, I wasn't even aware that Jump+ was free (I'm assuming similar to Mangaplus?). I just assumed you had to buy a digital copy like with Jump. So if that's the case, then it would definitely get a different kind of exposure. Though I was mainly referring to more exposure due to Shounen Jump as a brand. Then again, as mentioned above, a different kind of audience would read it.

Yeah, I mainly thought about the branding and that a lot more people are likely going to read it when they buy Jump to read their favourite manga each week. Then again, I guess it should be getting a lot more exposure than I expected in Jump+ with 2.5 million active weekly users.

I feel people outside Japan, including me, have a somewhat skewed view of the Japanese audience. Despite digital magazines growing year by year, some, if not many of us, believe the Japanese are still incredibly resistant to switching onto a digital platform despite being a nation well-known for their technological innovations. It doesn’t help the EiC still pushes people into buying physical copies of the magazine even though evidence suggests the digital platform is steadily rising each year, hence coming across as an old fossil.
Not to mention that I believe there are some people who would be surprised that the digital market aren’t growing as much we thought it would, despite the increase.
The image of Japan as a technologically advanced wonderland of future tech is very wrong. Consumer goods are cool, and a lot of cool technology is made there, but in general things operate at a very bureaucratic and low-tech level.
Nearly all ATMs close at 6pm to "prevent crime", for instance. Japan is a cash society as a result. They also rely on fax machines still over email, etc.
Although it technically is part of "Jump Comics", even right down to sharing release schedules with WSJ volumes, the branding is still different. Plus series don't have the Jump pirate logo on the cover, and the branding on the spine and back say "Jump Comics Plus" with the slightly modified "JC" logo on the spine having a + added to it.

Yeah. This is what I was getting at. That’s why a lot of people, including myself, think being in the lineup of the main magazine would do the series a better favor than it would in digital. The social media buzz is great, nonetheless. It’s doing a good job of promoting the series, but it might not reach the heights it would have if it was serialized in the main mag. Only sales will tell later if this is another big hit.
