Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Dude, reread the stuff with the casting agent. He clearly says she looks even younger than 20.
Reread when the Shinigami is told she isn't actually a loli.
I know what was said, but I'm saying that the loli archetype, to me, means that they look like a child.

Chloe does *not* look like a child. She 100% looks like a woman, just with a smaller frame.

"she's 20 but she looks younger... Her childish appearance could be hit or miss"

"ATTACKING SUCH A CUTE CHILD! THE NERVE OF THESE THINGS! LOLITAS ARE MEANT TO ADMIRED"
"SHES ALMOST 30 JAN'KNOW! SHES NOT A CHILD ANYWAYS!
"NO WAY! HOW COULD I BE WRONG ABOUT LOLI"

Its all clearly right there in the text. Shes mistaken to be a child. The word child is even used.

Regardless, I don't want to argue about this. Just sharing my opinion that this could be something that could offend or trigger readers, and thus am surprised Viz picked this up. Especially over Kaiju.

But that isn't the issue. We're not defending lolicons or whatever, or denying what was said.

If this author wanted to sell the loli bit better, he should have made Chloe look more like a child. She absolutely does not look like a loli, regardless of what the characters in this chapter stated.

I'm not saying what they said isn't problematic, though.

Rosario Vampire is a big series for Viz, I think it'd have been more surprising if they didn't pick it up.

Ghost Girl was irritating for me.
I like the idea of demons wanting to i
possess the mc's body to become stronger, and our Shinigami character possessing her to become that cool but funny shark looking scythe.
However, really not too fond of how the Shinigami is basically Andy but an openly proud pedophile to boot.
And while I do like what's shown of the power system as I mentioned previously, I'm really not that excited about reading another series with a generic modern day Japan exorcist setting.
I liked the manga but yeah, I have to agree. I felt off put by it. I hope this aspect is minimized over the next chapters. It's not a deal breaker to me but I wouldn't like it bothers me, even if the femc isn't an actual "loli".

Maybe not to the readers, but she clearly does to the characters hence the confusion.
That's the issue.
The art creating a weird dissoance to what's being said and perceived by the characters is weird, but shouldn't lessen the issue.

Although, speaking of problematic things.
I do wonder if say Undead x Unluck and/or Pig & Dolphin would create any controversy in the west if they got anime adaptations.
I feel the first episodes for each would make getting on an actual tv network like Toonami a big roadblock. I'm sure they could end up on a streaming services however I could still see it drawing up some internet controversy. Especially if it got on something super mainstream like Netflix.

Reprint Information - 7/13

Complete distribution

8/18 Undead Unluck 1, 2

This coincides with the announcement of the results of Tsugi ni Kuru Manga Taishou, which is on the 19th, so they have some expectations for it.
This is the one that goes directly to the stores, right? If so, nice. Then again it doesn't say how much is actual printed so it could be a small patch for all we know.

Undead isn't particularly worse that other anime though? It would probably be like Goblin Slayer or Shield Hero and be an issue within the anime community that everyone stops caring about as soon as it completes. Dolphin probably depends on timing. It's going to be at least 2 years for the anime to air (unless it pulls an I'm From Japan) and who knows what the situation will be like then.

This isn't worth speculating about, in HBC&D's case. We have no idea if it'll survive to that point. There hasn't even been a ToC ranking.

Are Goblin Slayer or Shield Hero on something that normies subscribe to like Netflix, Prime, or Hulu (Crave for Canadians as well)? Not something like crunchyroll or FUNimation which has a more niche consumer base. Genuinely curious because I don't know. They don't appear to be on any streaming services here in Canada.

Regardless, those series aren't from Jump so wouldn't recieve the same level of mainstream hype or promotion.

True, I just would find it very interesting if Shueshia kept serializing and pushing series that would have an uphill battle in the west.
I also can see Jump pushing Pig & Dolphin a fair bit given they usually always let series from vets last a little longer than most axed series and are even given color pages if the series initially seems to be struggling before cutting the cord (illegal rare or kagamigami, or how long they kept samurai 8).
With how empty and rookie full the magazine is rn I can see them wanting some of their vets to succeed.

For HBCD, maybe yes in the US now, but who knows how people will react to the same issues in a a year or two when an anime may be approved for those series. I do not think it would be a problem for both Europe and Japan even now.
For the other series, instead, I definitely see a problem. I believe it can be solved quite easily for UxU "limiting" Andy in the first episodes. For GRG, it is really the gag that characterize a character so I think it will be more challenging.

Speaking of GRG, I find it quite bland. Generic designs and plot so far. Nothing bad, but nothing that captures my interest either.

I'm in Canada too and both shows I named are on CR and Funimation here. I was just using them as examples (why are we assuming Undead goes to Netflix anyway?). I'm pretty sure Shield Hero is on HBO Max in the US though.

I don't agree with being in Jump automatically giving more mainstream hype or promotion though. I'm From Japan wasn't even licensed, I doubt Sumo or Saiki K (that one was on Netflix for S2 and they even funded a few episodes to adapt skipped chapters) did super well, Aniplex never bothered to dub Nisekoi (even on their recent "complete" re-release, I haven't heard anyone talk about Muhyo and Roji in the seasonal crowd at all, etc.

Netflix and Hulu both have (or had?) Sword Art Online which treats its female characters far worse than Fuuko ever was in terms of sexual assault.

FUNimation and crunchyroll are for a niche audience. Only people who watch anime will subscribe to those so such content is more acceptable to the type of people who subscribe.
Also I'm not assuming the series goes anywhere. Just that if it's on a mainstream platform like Netflix or prime there could be trouble.

I would believe Saiki K did somewhat well outside of jpn, of your list, its the most known and popular of those and got a nice cosplay following across the states. 'Also just do a saiki k netflix twitter search, a constantly updating tweet search

I'm sure most never did the manga since no license and it wasnt completed in scans until s2 or 3 ??

Okay, it's been more than 24 hours since this and it doesn't change. Magu-chan doesn't show any next date chapter in MANGA Plus since Chapter 4 was uploaded yesterday. I contacted MANGA Plus via Facebook but haven't gotten any answer yet, and even though 1 whole day has passed, there are no changes. I don't want to jump the gun too early, as I have commented on WSJ's Discord, this is weird. It's the first time I see it and I still go by it being 70% a dev error and 30% something actually serious. Anyway, I'm just letting everybody know. Whatever this means or whatever reasons there are behind this, I have no clue at all. I was hoping I'd at least get a copypasted answer from the service saying they'd report it and then it would change, as I have done in previous times, but nothing of the sort happened. Also please refrain from telling me that Viz has it scheduled for next week since we already know that Viz just puts templates in the chapters with next week's date and they don't update their Chapter Schedule page. And we also know MANGA Plus is way, way faster when it comes to schedule changes in the magazine and on their series, as we have seen with My Hero Academia or HEART GEAR. Anyway, hope it's nothing serious and it gets solved eventually. Guess this post also servers so no one is confused if they happen to come across this.

So, I got an answer.

It's not what I expected, and at the same time is. Kinda 50/50, because it's not a copypaste but doesn't explain much either. The only thing I can almost extract from this? Is that it's not an error since they would have told me something like: "Huh, that's weird. We'll contact our development team!" as they have done already previous times. It's just weird. Anyway, pray for it to still be an error even if it doesn't seem like it anymore? and for it not to be anything serious.

Maybe the mangaka got covid or some problem? I hope it's not serious as I'm loving the manga.

From what I've seen in manga and anime, when they talk about a loli, they don't always mean that she looks exactly like a child.

Many times they refer to having a small body and a cute and innocent face. Just like the heroine in this manga

Once I saw a manga, where a girl said that she had a loli's face, but her face doesn't really look like a child.

The issue is not so much whatever the problem is but the consequences of it, whether it's hiatus or straight cancellation.

That might be it, yeah. Maybe the definition has evolved beyond what I considered loli to be.

Either way, it's not going to stop me from continuing the series, but hopefully it dies down over time.

Is there *any* indication whatsoever that it's doing poorly in Japan? Do we know the general reception?

I don't think this really falls at all into reception given we're 4 chapters in. The situation of the mangaka will be the determining factor for the series, if you ask me. There's a recent example that happened in MagaPoke, Kodansha's digital platform, in which a series was straight up cancelled on Chapter 22 due to the mangaka suddenly falling ill.
