Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

That the MC must eventually end up with the girl that first becomes infatuated with him.
My goodness, this is so true.
Naruto has, possibly, the most infuriating example for this.

Question - What, in YOUR opinion (don't attack others), are the dumbest shonen trends/cliches that still exists today in WSJ?
The main villain (or villain's arc) must always be defeated by the MC. It feels so anticlimactic that the villain is getting their ass kicked by the antagonist (or any other character) and out of nowhere they get a power up/new technique and then the MC somehow defeats them.

Though Hinata imo is still a nice subversion, since the most cliche choice would've been to pair up Naruto and Sakura (and many fans expected that).
Naruto and Hinata falls into the trend tho. Hinata loved Naruto from the start and ends up marrying him even though Naruto at no point throughout the entire original series' run showed feelings for her.
But the infuriating part was Sakura with the dude who tried to kill her, aka Sasuke.

You can be sure Deku and Urakara are going to get together as well. At least Horikoshi has given hints that they both like each other.
It's almost as if, Horikoshi looked at things Naruto did and went "Nope, I'm not gonna make those mistakes".

Wonder what Oda will end up doing. Luffy x Boa Hancock? xD

Think you meant protagonist? But yeah, the final fights almost always have an obvious result. I remember enjoying Toriko's final battle the most from recent years.

The female has to initiate the pairing, though. They always determine the eventual marriage.

You have no friggin idea how I feel about the mess that was the Naruto shipping wars. And I see you have fine taste in tea. Green Tea is healthy and wholesome after all.

I don’t really follow OP, but I do read it on and off sometimes. As of recent chapters, I would say the new *ahem* girl have much better chemistry with Luffy than Nami & Boa combined :mono.

Issue 35: 3 August (My Hero Academia cover, 6th anniversary. I personally am betting for Tabata congratulating Horikoshi in the author comments)
Issue 36-37: 10 August (our first groupal cover without Hinata, Tanjirou and Emma, who will join Luffy and Deku in the front?)
Issue 38: 24 August (the issue where HxH will break its longest hiatus record)

I am betting new serialization round on issue 38 or 39. Burn the Witch has also from issue 38 to 41 for appear since Nak said Burn the Witch was coming in summer.
So this is kinda tough in regards to who will join Luffy and Deku in the front now.
I would say that Denji or Yuji makes sense right now, but to be honest, I love the trio-ship that the two have with Kei. I want the three of them to stay together for as long as possible.

Even though Black Clover's popularity isn't anywhere near as high, I think Asta makes sense with Luffy and Deku at the moment.

Some that aren't so serious but still feel overdone right now:
  • Comedies where the setup is the main character being paired up with a goofy/mascot character (if you include Hard-Boiled we've got four of them running right now).
  • Sports manga where the main character is short.
  • Exorcist manga.

I don't think that's even a exclusively shonen thing. Like, most movies, books and what have you deal with the romance in much the same way. And it does make sense in way. If you're not gonna follow up with the romantic subplot, might as well not include it at all. So this has the effect that if romantics feelings are established, they have to pan out, or otherwise it would feel like going against the law of narrative causality.

The first girl to like MC often doesn't end up with him though, since that's often the childhood friend.

The cliche is that having an obvious main girl in the first couple chapters (often a violent tsundere) and it never diverts from that path. Naruto definitely went against the trend, a shounen MC never ends up together with a side character admiring him from afar.

Even though I loved Hinomaru and I'm now reading Haikyuu, your post made me want a manga in which the character is considered too tall 😂
Maybe for gymnastics?

Regarding cliches, I don't like overly shy/ashamed characters.

My most hated was the Protagonist win via "Losing control to inner demon" or just the "Inner Demon Install" overall, but that's maybe because I grew up with the Big 3.

Second place was the protagonist just gaining what the main antagonist has in order to win or finding out he is the same (even race/species) as the antagonist. Bleach killed me with this:

SS/Byakuya: Ichigo grows as a Soul Reaper, Gains their "Rare" Bankai that Byakuya keeps bloviating about.
Arrancar/Ulquiorra: Ichigo develops his Hollowfication. Ulq flexes a second evolution, Ichi gets that too.
Arrancar/Aizen: Aizen transcends, so does Ichigo.
Fullbring: Ginjo gets Fullbring Bankai...so does Ichigo.
1000 War: Ichigo's "Heritage"

surprising rare once in a generation ability activating in the very first chapters against an incredibly strong character/enemy
fear of killing characters
fear of rebirthing characters

fear of losing the final battle

Even a lot of harem romcoms do the whole 'final pairing is very obvious from ch 1' thing with nobody else really being a serious option, even though the whole point of the genre is having lots of love interests.

I really liked how Toriko handled this. Even when Toriko agreed to get married, everyone was like "What about Komatsu?!"

In fact, I think Toriko was one of the most homoerotic WSJ series in recent memory.

Something I liked about WNL (even before the route endings) was it wasn't obvious as Rizu and Furuhashi both got top billing on all group covers and what not. Quints also didn't have a super obvious winner (although that was in Magazine) and was hugely successful so maybe these two can start a trend in at least the harem rom-com genre.

My most hated trope I guess would be the rival-like characters pretty much following the same archetype, always having to be a stoic, emotionless Ace that does everything better than the Mc just because, and that is sort of a jerk to everyone around them and are like this cause of some traumatic experience.

Like I understand the that they are always meant to contrast with the MC, but it’s surprising and a bit tiresome how much this formula is repeated
