Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

With last week's sales and a total of 3,421,360, Kimetsu no Yaiba 19 beat One Piece 61 and is now the second best-selling volume within a year in Oricon. Volume 20 + SE should be the third best-selling volume within a year now, but 20 SE hasn't charted for a few weeks now to give us the complete numbers. Kimetsu no Yaiba 21 + 21 SE sold an additional 330,000 copies when compared to volume 20 + SE in the same time frame and will cross the 3 million figure in the upcoming weeks. The fact that the editorial department only gave the current volume a 3 million first print despite the growth in sales shows just how much they are holding back lol. But watch them not give volume 22 a much higher print.

My Hero Academia 27 and The Promised Neverland 19 are both still doing well, selling an additional 30,000 and 43,000 copies, respectively, when compared to the their previous volumes. They both should be able to cross 500,000 copies in their fourth week, or at least get really close to it. Dr. Stone 16 and Act-Age 12 both had some solid growth, with Dr. Stone 16 selling an additional 33,000 copies over the previous volume and Act-Age 12 charting for a thrid week after not being able to do so for the previous 2 volumes. Black Clover 25 managed to sell more than volume 24 in the same time frame, but it was only by a margin of 5,000 copies and it's still behind volume 23 by almost 6,000 copies despite the latter having a day less to sell.

I'm very curious about TPN and MHA because those aren't small increases.
Dr. Stone's growth is getting impressive.

I'm wondering what numbers Act Age posts when it eventually gets an anime adaptation. 250-300k in a month doesn't seem unreasonable for something selling 135k in 3 weeks right now.

Question - What is the best selling manga in WSJ that isn't a battle manga or sports manga (excluding Death note)?
Bakuman peaked around 600-700k. Did anything do better than that?

The Golden Saints from Saint Seiya followed by the League of Villains from My Hero Academia, and the Japan U-20 national team from Captain Tsubasa for me.
Not the Omega saints?

Theyre my favorite [Subaru ❤]

I thought KnY already broke OP’s record for single best-selling volume?

@101nemesis I think MHA and Neverland’s increase are pretty self-explanatory? MHA is at its most hype arc since Kamino, and Neverland just ended, so the latter’s experiencing a −what do you call it?– ending boost?

Actually, in terms of weekly sales, Bakuma's peak was volume 16 with 488,553 copies sold in 4 weeks, but volume 11 sold 616,827 within a year. If we're talking about circulation, the best-selling manga that's not action or sports would be KochiKame, but if it's weekly sales we're talking about, as far as Oricon goes, then that would be Gintama, which would regularly sell over 400,000 copies back in the day. Unless you don't count Assassination Classroom as battle shounen, I don't know how to define that one either.

Kimetsu no Yaiba 18 broke the record first and is the best-selling volume within a year, but volume 19 is now the second-best selling.

I personally think that this is because Japan's no longer locked down due to COVID. As such, just about all of the bookstores have reopened. Last volumes were released during said lockdown, lasting in April and May.

Not knocking you, but I would believe that claim if I didn’t see people lining up for the latest volume of KnY during the lockdown.

I mean, it could still be that the lines would be bigger without lockdown. We don't really have a way to know.

Ending boosts usually show up for the last volume. But I guess TPN never declined too much so with COVID 19 reducing and it ending, maybe it got a slight boost.
MHA boost - I'm not sure if that's enough for such a boost. It could very well be COVID 19 receding in Japan. Next volume will be interesting to watch for both.

Yeah I was considering AC to be a battle manga.
Oh right, Gintama exists. Kochikame also would've been pretty big at its prime.
Do we know what the peak volume print number was for Shimabukuro's Takeshi series before it was cancelled?

I think it's more likely that series got boosts due to more bookstores being reopened rather than the current arc in the manga being "hype". Unless the next volume shows yet again another boost, its safer to assume its related to pandemic. There were series that suffered unusual declines during the lockdown, even in other magazines. At the same time, there were a few outliers like CSM/JJK which have seen boosts during the pandemic.

Tbh I'm not aware of the bookstore situation in Japan. Have all reopened at this point?

Currently they are opened, some stores might only have delivery service but overall they are working. I really thought there was going to be another lockdown in Tokyo due to the increase of cases but seems they are doing "fine" despite of that.

The last circulation number as 8 million with all 24 volumes, no first print numbers.

"Hype" So basically MHA have been losing sales because it was bad and only got an increase because it got good again? Thats not how things work.

Thats exactly how things work. Why for a moment OP losing it sales? Because the plot. Gintama last volumes also didnt sell all that good. Because final arc was not good. And et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

By your logic Haikyuu should have been getting non stop boost ever since season 3 ended since it never dropped in quality and yet it only got it thanks to the anime+ending.

Should we talk about how awful Neverland final arc was and yet it still got a boost?? According to you it shouldn't have sold more because Gintama didn't.

Takeshi's popularity was crazy for a comedy series with no anime. It had 2.63 million copies in print (7 volumes) which is bigger than CSM's current circulation numbers at 7 volumes. Jaguar was a bigger beast at that time having 3.5 million copies in print (7 volumes) at that point.

Rookies was also very popular with no anime. I don't get why these series never gotten an anime.

How do you explain Haikyu!!'s steady decline, then? The material between Volume 27 and 42 is highly regarded by fans (in fact, one of the games that happens during this stretch was voted as the best match in an official poll for the series). Also, the anime, which covered the material from the start of this decline, actually renewed interest in the manga even before the ending which gave it a further boost!

Anyway, you're not the arbiter of what's good and what's bad. Sales aren't nearly as simple as you claim. Sometimes a series peaks then declines, and sometimes it stagnates regardless of quality. There are so many different factors in play, not just "arc good, arc bad".

MHA is the 2nd most popular show in USA..
questionable and doesn't seem like it warrants any type of discussion

"According to data provided to Observer by Parrot Analytics, a data firm that tracks TV popularity through social media, fan ratings, and piracy to figure out who’s watching what, here are the 10 most in-demand TV titles in the United States over the last 60 days. "
