They know from the start yes. In some forum games it happens and even here sometimes people are pushed in front of the bus(the term is "bussing") for credibility. However that's best kept in the back of your head, I wouldn't refuse a mafia lynch even with the help of other mafias. And not like anyone is in the clear unless they lynch many mafias from both teams.
