DNA2 and Hatsukoi Limited were both cancelled according to their jp wikipedia articles.

There doesn't seem to be anything about why they still got anime however. My guess is an anime started production very early on due to the big name creators and good early performance, and the studio maybe didn't want to/couldn't cancel production after they had already started. That or a studio head was a huge fan.
They were both love romance manga, one really, really felt completed and not rushed (DNA2) and the other was weird in that every chapter kind of focused in a different love story (For the first couple of chapters), basically they were both good love stories that felt completed and maybe that's why they got 13 episode anime, as for they starting development of the anime early on... I don't know but the was a whole one year gap between Hatsukoi being finished and the anime premiere, in the case of Hatsukoi. (Also Hatsukoi sold 850,000 with 4 volumes, that was great even for that era). We never learn for example had sold 330k by volume 4.

So I don't think the anime studio merely decided because of good performance as if they didn't have a choice to cancel anymore, and in the case of DNA2 even if this could have happened because the manga ended in July 1994 and the anime started just three months later on October 1994 (So no time to cancel/reschedule the project), it must have done something right becaue it even got a couple of OVAs after the anime ended.

So I guess these two manga might have been cancelled but due to their stories they don't feel cancelled or rushed.. Now, am I saying they wouldn't have been longer manga if they had sold more or ranked better? Perhaps, but their endings seemed natural to me (And in the case of Hatsukoi, to somepeople in this thread's 2008 edition).

I took a look at their TOC ranking and both of them polled poorly but then I also checked other romance manga like Video Girl Ai (Which was a complete hit with around 1mill per volume) and that manga also polled poorly being dead last in almost every chapter 60+, in fact Video Girl Ai had like a 15 week streak in bottom 3 AND it didn't get cancelled (after Video Girl Ai there's a short story that was also serialized in WSJ named Video Girl Len, so basically a romance manga that had been bottom 3 for 15 weeks straight didn't get cancelled and was even allowed to make another extra story after its original one had ended.)

This was mentioned in Bakuman that romance/ecchi manga tend to have lower votes than other manga because (this is Bakuman's argument, not mine) Jump readers don't tend to vote for them because they are shy to vote for a manga they aren't supposed to be reading.

So basically, what I'm trying to say is.. those two particualar titles are hard to judge.. Based on poll results they were almost dead last in their last issues, they would have been obvious cancellations BUT it's hard to determine if they were canceled specifically because other romance manga also polled poorly and continued, IMO they feel complete unlike other manga were you totally can tell the author was told to hurry up.

BTW I remembered other "short" manga was Buso Renkin by Watsuki, though I never read this one so I don't really know but this must definetly have been cancelled but still managed to get an anime (probably because of the name attached).. It sold "fine" (It has 3'000,000 with 10 volumes, so it probably sold around 150k each volume at the time, but not a huge success especially for that age).

Kimetsu beating Slam Dunk domestically could see the light now
What's SD's Japan sales? 120-130mill?

If it's that then KnY will probably have it beat next year, and with less volumes (23 vs 31 and only 6 years in the market vs Slam dunk's 20), KnY is just frightening haha.

If that isn't a mistake then it's goodbye to One Piece 1000th chapter before the end of 2020 since it won't be on issue 49 and there would be 4 issues left in 2020 after that. If One Piece doesn't get any breaks after issue 49 then chapter 1000 should happen on issue 7. Now that leaves room for another series to take one of the end of the year LCPs if Oda isn't able to draw two LCPs so close to another since he is definitely getting one for chapter 1000.
Ooooof. If It were for only one chapter, Jump could make some magic (double chapter) since they have the chapters 3 weeks or so in advance. But two? No way.

Tough year for One Piece fans.

121 mil was 2014 stats, counting the re-released couple years ago should put it at somewhat ~130 million
A lots of news site say 157 million but I cannot get a source on that (even the Wikipedia page links back to the 2014 stats)

Kimetsu beating Naruto and Kochikame domestically could be a possibility now, if the Great Wall stays up in the next two months

quick question but how does shueisha promote the new manga? like for a story that is about to release its first volume. do they expect the buyers to have read it already from the magazine or is there promotion for the manga? or do they just hope the title and volume cover is enough to get people interested?

Some sources even say 170 mill for SD but I think that should be worldwide, 130mill japan only.

Right now KnY should have around 90m physical+ let's say 20% digital, let's go with 110mill, so yeah it's definetly gonna beat Slam Dunk, Naruto is 140m, but Kochikame's sales are 158'770,000 just a bit below DB's 160'000,000 (Though those supposed sales are from April '14, I think DB has since gotten a tankobon reprint with a new spine and a combini edition so it might have sold more, maybe it's at 170mill...)

The scary thing is that right now KnY is Jump's biggest domestic seller per volume, because I believe the reported 170mill of Slam Dunk are worldwide sales (I even asked EasyLove, the guy that makes JUMP's top seller videos and he/she said that it was probably a mistake that SD had sold 170mill in Japan, those were numbers mentioned in a TV quiz show in Japan in 2018 but were probably worldwide sales.

Anyway right now KnY only with its confirmed physical sales of 90mill with 22 volume averages 4'090,909 sales per volume. That's without digital sales, and we already know that some volumes have sold upwards of 4'300,000 (Again.. this is just physical sales numbers).

And don't get me wrong its total sales are a monstrosity, but the real monstrous thing is that it only has 22 volumes (23 soon) and it's likely reaching the numbers made by a 72 volumes manga powerhouse Naruto and 200 volume classic Kochikame with only a fraction of their volumes and.. it literally did that in a span of a year.

My one final hope is KnY's last volume doesn't get 4.05 million first print, I don't want that record taken from One Piece :luffy

Edit: One Piece still has better Japan sales per volume by a little bit averaging 4'161,383 against KnY's 4'090,909, but that won't last since KnY still is selling real good and OP has been in decline so every volume released will probably decrease its per volume average sales, also I can only imagine KnY has a bigger digital fan base than One Piece, of course we don't have the digital sales for neither but my guess would be Kimetsu has a bigger % of digital and thus has the upper hand against OP in the digital front too)... Heck KnY sells so damn fast that maybe as I finished typing this it surpassed One Piece's lead.

Don't worry, neither does Shueisha. They can just do a limited first print and then do reprints immediately after. Helps create a sense of urgency to buy. Watch how they give KnY 23 like a 4.02 million first print, or some number close to the record but not close enough. xD

January Volumes

Release on January 4th (7 day first week)

My Hero Academia 29
Black Clover 27
We Never Learn 20
Dr. Stone 19
Jujutsu Kaisen 14
Chainsaw Man 10
Mission: Yozakura Family 6
Agravity Boys 4
Mashle 4
Moriking 3
Magu-chan: God of Destruction 2
Bokura no Ketsumei 1

Massive month, god damn. Now this is going to be an interesting month after so many boring ones.

And yes, no sight of One Piece 98 so far.
Is Phantom Seer releasing its first volume in December? They're waiting quite a while to release Our Blood Oath volume 1. I could see it being axed before then. Also curious to see Magu-chan getting its second volume before Roboco and Dolphin.

If they want to go all out, now's the time. They don't need to create a sense of urgency because this is the very last volume, they want to go out with a banger so they could very well use this as a marketing tool. Volume 21 + SE had a first print of 3 million then volume 22 + SE had a first print of 3.7 million, it's an increase of 700,000 copies. They most definitely can give a similar increase for volume 23. I highly doubt they would let a single One Piece record hold them back (if they do then well lol).

Have to say, I know it's a couple of months off but I'm really curious to see what the placements look like on the next group covers.

Probably

front - One Piece, MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen
second row - Dr Stone, Black Clover, Chainsawman (assuming it's still around)
prominent tertiary series - Mashle, Undead, Yozakura, Ayakashi Triangle
and the others all small unless one of Roboco, Magu, or Cop and Dolphin sells incredibly well.

I don't think they'll give Mashle or Undead second row billing quite yet.

Main series - One Piece, MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dr Stone, Black Clover getting smaller as between each one
Second Row - Mashle, Undead, Yozakura, Ayakashi Triangle
Third Row - The rest

What are the top 10 or top 5 mangas with most copies in circulation in Japan only (Not counting other countries numbers) I expect DB, Naruto and other popular mangas to not be that much above KNY since those were REALLY popular in the west.

Raf has posted Japan only (since is what Griff asked), but if we count worldwide, the top-10 changes a little:

1. One Piece - 470 million
2. Dragon Ball - 250 million
3. Naruto - 250 million (goes up 1 place)
4. Slam Dunk - 170 million (goes up 1 place)
5. Kochikame - 157 million (goes down 2 places)
6. Bleach - 120 million (goes up 2 places)
7. Kimetsu - 100 million (goes down 1 place)
8. JoJo - 100 million (goes down 1 place)
9. Fist of North Star - 100 million (goes up 3 places (12th place Japan rank))
10. Captain Tsubasa - 80 million (goes up 1 place (11th place Japan rank))

HxH and Kinnikuman would be places 11 (goes down 2 places) and 12 (goes down 2 places). Kenshin is 13th both in Japan and WW.

100m is Japan only for Jojo? If so, then it's confirmed to be at least at 101 million with France

Considering France is only at 1m, it's likely not much higher worldwide
