Top-20 sales in USA in last October.

My Hero Academia continues being the king of Jump in USA, but Kimetsu (and in minor degree Neverland) are also there. I'm wondering two things:
-What's the situation of One Piece in USA?
-Has Jujutsu Kaisen the potential to appear in these lists in USA in the future?

EDIT: I didn't notice. Chainsawman is also in the list, in 5th place.

I’m sure some users remember geocities, a database which used to have a massive amount of print / sales numbers for Shonen Jump series. I have managed to find a new source for the data it used to host: http://comicdata.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-5.html

Just giving my two cents on the Bleach / JJK conversation, it is definitely not easy to reach 1 million per volume. JJK looks like it will get there with its current momentum but how many Jump series actually get to that level, not many.

Also, there is a difference between reaching a million per volume through growth of backlog volumes and actually having a first print of 1 million. Bleach had a first print of 1 million or more from volume 18 to 49 (32 volumes). No series in Shonen Jump that began over the last decade achieved a run like that or even could have if they ran long enough except Demon Slayer.

Demon Slayer’s success has not pushed the goal post closer for other series to reach 1 million, it’s an anomaly.

Damn that's a really good debut for Chainsaw Man in America, as for Jujutsu I think the anime boost could also benefit the series in the US, we'll see when the next volume comes out in December I think.

@Rouk'

I get your point, I definitely think JJK will reach 1mill at this point.
In fact yeah the anime gave it a pretty strong boost, it might be similar to what BLEACH got.

Pretty good.
You can check this interesting article.

The article estates that Tokyo Ghoul (#1 manga in 2017 in USA) sold 273K copies for a total of $3.5M (Which is the price for 273k copies priced at $12.8 USD which I imagine was retail price?
(So this article makes the assumption every person bought it's Tokyo Ghoul volumes at MSRP which is absolutely not the case, but stil... I'm gonna go with that).

It says that Oda's franchises made $2'007,041.74 which divided by the MSRP of $9.99 would be 200,905 copies of ONE PIECE volumes, which is more or less the same for Toriyama and an extra 10% for Kishimoto.

I was going to say is amazing how Kishimoto and Toriyama are selling so amazingly thru pure backlog.. That is until I remembered their properties have sequels and that's probably where a lot of the sales come too, but still I think DB Super and BORUTO are monthly mangas, right? So they release what? 3 volumes a year probably?

-Has Jujutsu Kaisen the potential to appear in these lists in USA in the future?
I think it does, I mean in Japan it's selling better than MHA did when its anime premiered, unless I'm mistaken so the potential is clearly there. But obviously super hero manga have been dominating the USA charts for a couple of years now with One Punch man and now My Hero Academia, so my bet is Jujutsu Kaisen will chart in the USA but kind of like Demon Slayer, a good selling shonen manga, but since it's not a super hero manga I think it will not beat MHA in the USA.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

@Shinji Hirako
Thank you so much for that site, I'm gonna look it up :D

And yeah I totally agree with what you say, I'm 99.9% sure at the very least one volume of Jujutsu will eventually sell 1 million, BUT I'm not that confident it will get a 1 million print run, only time will tell.

And yeah, not even classics like Kochikame or Jojo sold a million per volume (Kochikame is... A VERY interesting series to me, like it has sold 160million with 200 volumes but I don't think I have seen it chart ever, so how did it get there?)

So yeah, lots of super popular manga you'd think sold a million didn't, it's not like being a million seller is necesary to be a succesful WSJ franchise.

Kochikame made most its sale in the first 150+ volumes (or rather the first 30 years), simple as that
it has 140mil circulation at volume 145 (volume 144 pulled in 400k, so you could have imagine the first 50 volumes)

'The first 150+ volumes' is such an insane sentence to see lol. Kochikame sure is something incredible.

The last volume of Kochikame sold 436k in two months counting only the special edition, the normal edition sold 133k in a month and something, which means last volume is easily over 600k, and this is a 40 years old gag manga, it's very obvious the series was a 1 million seller in its peak of sales. It also always charted on Oricon Top 50.

So according to Shoseki Agravity Boys #3 sold 11,823 copies, that's actually a upgrade considering volume 2 didn't even appeared in the July monthly chart

So Agravity back in monthly. Still around the sameish as volume 1, but at least it is in monthly unlike Vol 2.

Nice for Mashle and Ayakashi. I hope they both continue to grow.

Edit: You typed Mashle 1 on your post

I guess you meant July? Anyway, it's an "upgrade" because the top 500 cutoff this time is considerably lower (12,000 for July vs. 9,300 for October).

It's not, the treshold is just lower. The same number wouldn't have charted in july either, and volume 1 was over 12k (although given it's shoseki and the difference is so small you can just assume it's about the same number).

Reminder that MHA sales are at least 33 Million if you include the US sales
That's for all countries viz publishes in which is much more than just the US (although given its US popularity I imagine it's the main contributor, but still).

I'm really curious about HeroAca's worldwide numbers. I imagine we'll get them once Legendary actually gets to work on that Hollywood movie.

While I understand that sales are clealy important, I believe most of the longer series, especially the Big 3, managed to create a sense of community in other parts of the world around them over the yeaŕs which is now their legacy.

I do not know if KnY has the possibility to do that now that has ended, while I am pretty confident its numbers will reach those of Bleach.

Looking at the all-time top selling list which surpassed 100 million copies, most of them has a distinctive feature that made them famous and remembered, while KnY is a collection of good elements, but, in my opinion, it does not have an iconic characteristic, which sets it apart fron other shonen manga, apart from the sales records.
The thing about the original big 3 was that they were at the right place at the right time, 3 biggest shounen series at the time in Japan when anime exploded into Western market thus allow them to build up international fanbase. We have to judge event in the context of their time too. Plus they also run extremely long compare to KnY which run for like 4 years and only reach mainstream in Western anime fanbase in around 1.5 year.

Did OP really exploded in the West though ?

Ayakashi Triangle seems like a pretty considerable overestimation with 78.090 estimated copies monthly, but 72.704 copies by adding all 5 weeks covering October. Maximum it could be would be between both numbers. Anyway, pretty much pointless to discuss this at all, considering it's already more than established in the magazine, and these numbers will just keep growing until it ranks all 4 weeks.

MASHLE is also overestimated, not as Ayakashi, but still, 56.460 estimated copies monthly and 54.029 out of all 5 October weeks. Would say the most accurate one for this is the number gotten by adding weeks. Overall slow but decent growth compared to Volume 2, hopefully it will do better with Volume 4 given it just keeps getting its backlog in ranks every single day, week and month.

For AGRAVITY BOYS, that's another decrease in monthly estimations, considering this month's on 11.823 copies. Volume 2 didn't even manage to rank in monthly due to being below 12.000 copies, and volume 1 was on 12.150 estimated copies. It just keeps being stagnant, if not worse.
