Yeah, you are right, I know that the process is more complex than what I made it out to be, but we have seen multiple examples in the past of series changing magazine, even in the middle of their serialization, so there has to be someone who takes the decision.

Probably it comes down to a discussion between the editors in-chief of the two magazines that are involved, but in this case, given how popular KnY is, there might be interest from the general managers themselves.

Authors who change magazines during it's run usually have health reasons and can't keep up a weekly schedule or they prefer having a longer schedule among other things. The editors in chief will probably handle the logistics but the decision itself comes from the author (most likely after talking with their editor)

This is all my opinion/just a guess but...

Shueisha has no reason to protect OP's first print record. This all sounds like conspiracy theories. OP doesn't benefit at all from this 10 year-old record. It's not used in any ads, so nobody but hardcore manga enthusiasts knows about it. No one is buying the new OP volume because 10 years ago the series had first prints of over 4m.

The only logical conclusion I can see is that this is not about OP at all. It's just about Kimetsu. I think they consider that saying "The huge first print has already sold out in just a few days! Urgent reprints scheduled under a week after its release!" is a better marketing move than saying "Kimetsu has broken a new record, highest first print ever!" (which is arguably not even true because of vol. 0.). The latter is a one-time thing, the former can be said again and again as the new reprints are sold-out.

In fact they could have given Kimetsu a 4.5m first print (or more) if they had used the same logic they used for One Piece, but it would have taken the volume longer to be sold-out, which means the reprints would have been announced/scheduled later. This would have led vol. 23 to be less often in the news during its release month.
If Shueisha's goal is to make Japan think and talk about Kimetsu every single second that passes, this is the best strategy. It's just too bad for us over here who just want to see records being smashed.

A smaller first-print also increases the FOMO, which is especially relevant to the limited edition.



Also, it would be nice to not use ableists terms...

an additional 100k wouldn't have stopped it from going out of stock, heck they could store it in the warehouse, the reason why this"conspiracy theory" seems to be true is the fact that they didn't even get it to 4M but just decided to give it a stupid number like 3.95 and what happened last year with them saying that OP is the best selling manga depsite them using Oricon every year or the fact they didn't celebrate KNY being 1st this half year when they always mention it with OP( and they even mentioned that KNY novels are 1st in half year but strangely not the manga).

People really need to stop casually throwing words around like "cult" (lmao) or "conspiracy theory". This isn't the US election.

There is logical reasoning behind the desire to not let One Piece lose another record because it's still running and will probably continue to run for the next 5-10 years.
I get it. It's not the first time a company has squandered to protect a record and won't be the last. You think Disney would've let Avatar's record be broken if it was another company that made Endgame? Fuck no. Disney would've re-released the movie in theatres just to gross some more money to protect that record. Disney wanted Endgame to get that record. So what did they do? Re-release it for a last push and made a whole marketing campaign around it. The complete opposite of what WSJ did.

I get the logic of why WSJ did it. But still doesn't take away the fact that something that earned that record is not getting it.

And this isn't even about Kimetsu.
If fucking Roboco or Yozakura tomorrow have multiple volumes that sells more than peak One Piece by solid visible margin - that is you can see all Roboco/Yozakura volumes still in top 50 selling 50k a week despite multiple of them having already sold 4.4M (a big margin between this and the peak One Piece volume on Oricon. How Big? 1+million is the difference; OP 61 sold 3.3M, KNY #1 has sold 4.5M. Don't want to take 1st Volume as reference? Fine. KNY #17 has sold 4.3M), and Shueisha/WSJ still don't bump up their first print to at least 4.06M or higher - then yeah, it's that's a pretty shitty move.

I honestly doubt Gotouge cares. They are probably just overwhelmed with having become a multi-millionaire in a year.

Anyway, that's my last bit on this topic unless someone quotes me to throw around random words.

Uhh. I enjoyed PS more than Kaiju. So, hope PS does at least 15-20k first week.
Kinda hard given it's Amazon rankings right now but who knows, maybe physical sales at stores will be better.

One can hope.

It will outperform by a lot, for now the ranking of amazon is like this:

Kaiju No.8: #842 (Physical), #256 & #850 (Kindle)
Phantom Seer: #16,544 (Physical), #9,057 & #34,662 (Kindle)

It will do really good based in the pre rankings, probably even in the Top 50 depending on how things go for that week.

Kaiju #8 has been #1 in Jump+'s comment ranking pretty much permanently now, it rarely ever leaves that top spot. I think its sales may end up being limited by however much Jump decides to print for it.

Phantom Seer got a lot of buzz for ch 1 but it's been bottom 5 for the past few issues aside from the colour page, so the hype seems to have died down a bit. I think it'll sell less than Roboco/Magu/Dolphin, if that trend continues and it's bottom 3 again when we get issue #52's ToC.

I'll be very surprised if Kaiju gets outsold by Phantom Seer. Not saying that Phantom is going to do poorly per se, but I think Kaiju is going to do quite well for itself at least at the very beginning

Just for curiosity i checked the rankings for Jigokuraku and Undead Unluck and Kaiju No.8 is outperforming both too:

Jigokuraku: #2,726 (Physical), #404 & #1,474 (Kindle)
Undead Unluck: #5,496 (Physical), #427, #1,567 (Kindle)

Ghost Reaper Girl on other hand seems like is doing bad...

K8 could be pulling first week(?), or couple days sale of 50,000 like Spy x Family (judging by both series performance on J+ pre volume 1 sales), whether it will sell more after that is another matter.

magu chan spent a lot of time at the botton until he won CP. I don't think we can say with such certainty that Phantom seer will sell less than Roboco / Magu / Dolphin just because of Toc's positions.
We also have to remember that this was the year for many veterans in Shonen jump to end and there are 2 more to finish (WnL and Chainsaw man).

Personally i think Phantom Seer will be basically Magu-chan, "bad" rankings, high online popularity and when the volume is released, it perform decently to well and start to get better rankings.
