Of the things to catch up on: I prefer old WSJ and am actually quite looking forward to the next few competitive rounds of serialisations where the slew of middling 2020 series will have to prove themselves against each other and only the best will make it to the end of the year - there's too many series that need to be cut that in most other years would have been cancelled already. It's fine to have a fair few series with growth that don't do anything special from the beginning, but we definitely need a few more hits in the next year or so. It's been a great year to be a newcomer in the magazine but that's likely to change in 2021.

Another thing: Complaining about veteran series taking up the space in the Oricon rather than celebrating the success they're all having and bringing to the magazine just seems like a not-so-roundabout way of complaining about your own favourite not getting that same treatment. If another series you wish was doing that good in its place and dominating, would you be of the same opinion? Always baffled me to see people complain about the success of a series currently in its peak just because it's taking the spotlight away from others. Your favourite just needs to perform better, simple as that. And even if it doesn't that fine because sales doesn't necessarily mean quality.

Also, with regards to Demon Slayer in particular - watching it break records and continue outperforming in everything it does is fun. It's a cultural phenomenon and we're watching that unfold in realtime, so make the most of the moment and all the many positives its providing in an otherwise shitty year.

I can see Furudate and Gotouge returning with hits if they so choose - they both have dedicated fanbases who will be awaiting what they come out with next (if anything at all). Kaui and Posuka Demizu I also see doing well, and Usazaki I hope she does; both are already active with oneshots so they'll be back to give at another go at least. Fujimoto is only going to get more popular with the anime and Part 2 coming, not concerned about his career at all. The only two I'm not so confident about are Mirua and Tsutsui, mainly because neither of their series felt that big in comparison to there rest of the magazine.
You find it fun... but I find it is just a trend. People are not reading something because they enjoy it, but just because "its famous". But anyway who cares, they are free to buy what they want, but its innegable that selling doesn't tell much on the quality of the series

Huh. It jumped up by two million since the last volume? I wonder how much the current arc factors into this.

Didn't notice it until now, but JJK's translator changed in the last chapter (from Stefan Koza to John Werry). Wishing best luck to the new one since I suppose Jujutsu must be one of the hardest WSJ series to translate. I'm also a little sad for Stefan, he made weekly videos analyzing the chapters and even cosplayed as Nanami
Why did they change translator?

I don't think that many people are reading something just because it's famous if they don't like it. They might have only started Demon Slayer in the first place because it's famous (but yeah, that's how word of mouth works, more people talking about something the more likely someone else is to hear about it and look into it) but I have a hard time people are lining up (pandemic or not) for hours to buy a manga they don't really like just because it's famous.

According to your logic, Jjk, bnha and even Neverland, people bought the series because of the hype and not because they genuinely enjoy reading it.

John Werry...he also does the translations for D.gray-man and makes a frustrating amount of mistakes....this saddens me.

Doesn’t this also apply to One Piece before KnY exploded in popularity?
Yes.

But that argument doesn't apply to before one piece got big, even back then it was a solid 1.3-1.4 million seller (four weeks) and still climbing.

You could take a look at the circulation numbers, one piece had 24 million copies at 12 volumes which is pretty high, and maintained it number one spot at sales yearly since 2002-2003(losing it once to nana).

Offcourse the spike that one piece got (2009)is all duo to it becoming famous.

We have three cases(soon four) of series abnormally spiking in popularity :

One piece/attack on titan/demon slayer/Jujutsu kaisen:

One piece maintained its popularity longer than attack on titan and had a bigger spike, demon slayer had a far bigger spike than both but it unfortunately ended before we could see if it would maintain it for longer than them.

Note that this argument disregards that people would get into a series due to it becoming famous but continue reading it due to enjoying it.

One would need to conduct a study to find out if people would read stuff they don't like, just because it was popular at the time.

Tldr:
Unless we do a study we would never know how many people read all of kimetsu/one piece/attack on titan just due to popularity, so speculating about it is pointless.

I think he wanted to quote me, but he was wrong. Maybe.

Your argument, Pietro (and who thinks the same), goes from bad to worse.

Do you really think that people buy a work "just because it became famous"? First it is not true. And second, if a work becomes famous, it is generally because they buy it. I would understand if you told me "Demon Slayer became much more popular after the anime. I think a bigger interest was after episode 19."Ok. But to tell me by now that people bought 82 million volumes in just one year, that Blu-ray anime has been sold a lot and so many other things, is just ridiculous.

I think that debating this systematically reaches a point where it becomes absurd, even for those of us who try to explain in the best possible way and with arguments. There are people that the success of Demon Slayer is like putting lemon on an open scar. Because it was and will always be a work that against every prognostic said "Hey, I'm here and I've come to stay." And boy did he succeed, he will always be known for being the only one to get certain manga and mangaka who are revered as gods, occupy second and third places on a list. The sacred cows only in India, hearts.

If people simple buy a work due to hype and trend and popularity, then Samurai 8 would still be here. But it's not. Checkmate

and by HYPE I mean Shuiesha hype it up, and overprinting a crap tons of copies, and put leaf pamlhet in all the Jump series that were released that month.

John Werry...he also does the translations for D.gray-man and makes a frustrating amount of mistakes....this saddens me.
John Werry also did Eyeshield21 and I have no problem with its translation. But maybe it's my favorite series bias speaking

The "people bought the manga because of its popularity" theory quickly falls apart when you think about it a little.

It's possible, and I'd even say likely, that some people bought Demon Slayer because of its crazy popularity this past year.
They might have thought something along the lines of "why is this so popular? I should check it out."

Thinking this, they might have went in a store and bought a few volumes of the manga, maybe like 3.
Then, depending on whether they liked it or not, they went and bought the rest of the manga.

The people that buy the later volumes do so because they liked the previous ones, not because it's popular. You don't buy 23 volumes of a manga because of its popularity.

There is 100k units between volume 1 and the next best selling volume of Demon Slayer. These 100k people might fall into the "bought the manga because of its popularity" category.
The 4.6m people that bought the entire manga certainly do not. They just liked what they read.

Edit: Manga that peaked with their first volume, however, arguably belong to this category. I'm mainly thinking of Ojisama to Neko and Sakamoto Desu Ga?.

It hasn't gotten an update in a while, but it's at least 7.5-8 million now. If it's not at 10 yet, the anime coming back should get it closer.
I mean last volume sold like 400k I think it should be atleast 10 mil

Oda disagrees :cheez
At Jump, Demon Slayer was really amazing. I enjoyed how it was able to save the feelings of so many people. Absolutely superb work. This is how I want manga to be. It touched me, somehow!

I agree with what everyone else said so I won't repeat them. The only thing I'd probably agree with you is that Oricon is boring now with all these walls but it's an Oricon issue at this point and not extending the rankings.

If we are lucky we should be getting info of issue 7 preview in some hours/tomorrow. Some interesting stuff I want to know:
-What is getting issue 7 cover
-New serialization batch?
-If we are going to have another Neverland oneshot/special chapter/something related for like fifth or sixth consecutive issue
