I would say its reverse - they suspect it to be complete flop and want confirm it with volume selling
That was a pattern last year, in the group of newbies, the one who was put to sell first sold better.

This was the case with the Phantom seer and Ayakashi triangle.

Only undead unluck was different, even though Undead sold well, Mashle was better in sales.

In that case, they may have faith that the other three will sell well already, and they're hoping putting i tell c first will give it a boost.

Tbh I think that pattern is just a coincidence, though. It probably isn't worth thinking too deeply about.

The new 4 strikes me as potentially turning out like the Ayakashi Triangle batch from last year where one series gets high early sales due to the big hyped name behind it (Elusive Samurai this time), and the other 3 all do okay but nothing stand out.

Maybe we'll see a bunch of flops though, it's always a little hard to tell unless a series is a very clear hit or a total mess from the start.

So far in the new batch the amount of traction Kowloon has been receiving is absolutely pitiful. Vomic was posted two days ago and hasn't even gotten up to 10k views yet, J+ views are very low, and even the TV CM couldn't get to more than 20k views on YouTube. I know it's popular here but unfortunately not really getting the attention it needs to survive where it matters. It's a shame because I think it's good. But as it stands it's probably the most likely to flop out of the batch. Might even U19. I don't see i tell c lasting long either but it's doing a little better in those categories at least.

And now we wait for March volume sales. Mashle's growth is looking to be pretty incredible and its backlogs are still going strong, UU will probably grow a little too, and Ayakashi will probably be at the very least consistent. I hope Yozakura grows too given that last volume was a good sign and the magazine has been pushing it since. But at this point I don't think it will be axed anyway, will probably have a natural end (at I think 100ish chapters but could be wrong). Pretty much the only series whose life banks on this is Magu-chan. Agravity Boys-length run seems very likely but another stagnant volume would mean its chances for anything beyond that are probably dead. I don't even know if the color page is going to help at this point. I guess it's nice that editorial hasn't completely given up on it but series with promise *cough*Phantom Seer*cough* are kinda getting screwed over in the process so it feels undeserved. Hoping for the best but bracing for the worst here.

What about Elusive and Witch?

What about Elusive and Witch?
Elusive has been incredible in J+ views, basically sped right over the majority of the current roster, and also did over 100k views on both the PV and the vomics. It's pretty clearly the safest of the batch. Witch Watch didn't have great vomic views but it's PV was over 220k. I think it's also going to be just fine but not as guaranteed as Elusive. Still in a good spot though.

These all have a very simple answer: volume sales are not the only thing that matters to jump.

We know they do reader surveys every issue and we know the results of those polls affect the order of the ToC in a large way even if it's not exact, why are so many people suddenly acting like polls don't matter or even exist? It should be clear by now that, at least in regards to the ToC, sales probably do not matter at all.
Polls haven't mattered as much as in the past since last decade. Series like World Trigger were consistently placed in the middle or lower ranks when even former editors came out and said it was placing first in the surveys numerous times but the chief editor would always push it back. The renaissance of public Jump campaigns to push certain series every year has just made editor meddling more certain (although the push campaigns started when Nak became the head honcho). Editor favoritism was already in the works right beforehand back when it was widely noted Hinomaru Zumou was a department beloved even when sales never grew.

He could, but we don't know. It's clear by the last few years that his beloved series have been Dr. Stone and Samurai 8 at least. Getting the most pushes even when unwarranted. I'm probably in the minority, but I actually think Dr. Stone sales are pitiful considering the amount of cover pages, color spreads, tv commercials, merch, promotional material and attention it has been given over the years.

I'm actually shocked he hasn't pushed Build King considering the amount of time he's spent with Shima. Reception must have been harsh on it.

Agreed. Just looking at online reception, it is the clear survival favorite even if the west has been down on it. The early JP reception eerily resembles the early plaudits series like JJK and Undead had in their first ten chapters.

i think the conspiracy theory that Nak is secretly sabotaging PS should stop. I don't have a solid explanation as to why its consistently in the back, and why it isn't receiving color pages. But i highly doubt they they're purpose sabotaging a series that could be a success just for the hell of it.

This is a question: is it possible that Phantom Seer is at the bottom because the series above it are by veterans? Does it come into play?
The time Jujutsu Kaisen still at the bottom while it's popular before anime?

Where did I say Nak was sabotaging Phantom? Don't put words in my mouth please.
I don't know the reason PS is in the back. While I'm sad, it's no use speculating because I don't think Shueisha are idiots enough to cancel a series with a steady and growing fanbase. Sales without promotion are neat, so I'm not too worried for it. It will probably match or even surpass Yozakura with Volume 3. While I think he's incapable, I just don't believe Nak is incompetent enough to cancel a series that is outperforming the majority of the 2020 newbies on solely its own merit.

If anything it could be the next Nura. A great selling series with the majority of its time spent in the lower ranks.

My take on this whole situation is pretty simple: I don't think Phantom Seer necessarily deserves high ToC ranks. We don't have any information about surveys (except for, well, the ToC itself). I also don't think it's being put at the bottom purely because of bias or incompetence. There's so many possible reasons that we don't know, and it's simpler to assume there is one.

However, there is one thing that it's hard to justify: the lack of Color Pages. Why doesn't it get color pages for reprints, volume release or whatever?. You can imagine some excuses (it's unneeded because the series is growing regardless? The artist just doesn't want to do them?), but they are way less solid. They are an easy way to promote series, and even if surveys are terrible (which, again, could easily be the case), there are other metrics, ones we do know about for sure (such as volume sales and reprints), that should be enough to justify it. I don't think people would be that annoyed by the bottom placements if they felt like Jump was doing something with the series. But they aren't.

Just wondering but do series always get color pages for every reprint? Maybe people are under a misperception that reprints always mean a color page.

Not always, no, or at least I don't think so. Specially not for every reprint. My point wasn't meant to be "it should get a CP for each of these reasons", more in the vein of "it should get at least one, for any of these reasons".
