You know, I was thinking with Candy Flurry starting and Cop and Dolphin probably not having very long left to live, recently battle shounen by newbies have all either had quick cancellations or became hits. Phantom Seer came close but only managed to survive one batch in the end.
The late cancelled battle series which survived multiple batches first have all been by veterans in recent years. I don't think we've had a late axe of one by a newbie since Magico way back in 2011?
Which is a good sign for Sakamoto Days I suppose. If it lives past ch 30, it's probably going to stick around for the long term.
Magico's still an interesting series to look back on. With most series that find early success but fail later on it's a matter of not gaining enough traction beyond the initial hype, or stagnating or running out of fun ideas so people slowly lose interest, gradual stuff like that.
But with Magico, there's one specific story development which instantly destroyed its popularity. It's not often you see a series where you can easily pick out a certain moment and say that's what killed it.
