Probably the weakest issue in the past two months, though not a bad one overall. Have been re-reading One Piece lately so not having that this week was a shame, especially with the cliffhanger from before.
Great:
1. ( - )
Jujutsu Kaisen - What a great chapter for Mai/Maki. Epic and cool and emotional in the way it needs to be.
2. (+4)
Undead Unluck - Just like JJK, UU delivered on the emotions and the action once again. Still undecided if I like this more than the autumn arc yet, but either way it's still excellent. Get out of the bottom three!
3. (+5)
Blue Box - We went full-on with the badminton this week, loved it. This was probably Taiki's best chapter so far as well. I'm appreciating how level-headed he is in the face of potential drama (even if he has his goofy traits), I should take some cues when I get worried about those romance flag moments cropping up. Excited to see what this super-early colour page looks like.
Good:
4. ( - )
Black Clover - What a fantastic Black Clover chapter! Sometimes the fights in this series just deliver exactly what you expect - which is usually always fun to read at the bare minimum - but seeing Magna get a time to shine with magic that makes
sense, and him taking down one of the most powerful villains of the series so far? That's pretty satisfying stuff to read, especially when it doesn't feel like an ass-pull.
5. (-1)
Dr. Stone - Dr Suika is no more, but her impact shall never be forgotten. Just like that revelation at the end... jeez.
6. (+1)
My Hero Academia - Really impressed by the movement of Deku throughout the cityscape. Was another fun read but the artwork definitely was my favourite part, especially with how it's all taking place at night during a rainstorm. Can imagine how good this would look animated.
7. (+4)
Me & Roboco - A Gorilla and Roboco chapter! Probably my two favourite characters, plus I always find the Urahara chapters especially funny with how Bondo/Gorilla suddenly becomes a thing. Crammed full of Jump references this week as well, nice stuff.
8. (-3)
Sakamoto Days - Art felt a little bit manic but nothing that detracted too much from my enjoyment. Love the design of the main villain of this arc - hopefully those on the other floors will be more impactful than this week's however.
9. (-6)
Mashle - Nice followup from last week, even if significantly less hype.
10. (+4)
Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin - My favourite chapter in a while, loved that final spread. The countdown continues - I give three or four more chapters at this rate.
Fine:
11. (-1)
High School Family: Kokosei Kazoku - Not as funny as the volleyball dad chapters, but we're still on the sports focus which I happily welcome. The mum showing up with her vuvuzela was the definite highlight.
12. ( = )
The Elusive Samurai - Nice action at the start, and genuinely didn't think it was going to end up being another recruit for the gang, not bad stuff.
13. (-4)
WITCH WATCH - There were gags here but I found the panelling/dialogue didn't make the most of the moments where I
should have been laughing. Shoutout to that very sleek colour page though.
14. (+3)
Nine Dragons' Ball Parade - Not as soul crushingly disappointing as last week, but still the weakest sports manga this week (can you believe we suddenly have three in the magazine right now?). There's no way this could wrap up and feel satisfying, but at least we got some pages of nice baseball action this week. Just a shame that caricature if a villain brings the mood down.
15. (-2)
Magu-chan: God of Destruction - That was endearing. My main takeaway is that it was just another chapter of Magu-chan.
16. (-1)
Mission: Yozakura Family - Well, that was more pages than usual I had to read through. It was fine, I guess. Lots of flashy moves happening but it all read as quite chaotic and cluttered. And that lead colour page did nothing for me, the colours were abrasive and it felt messy, but that's typically how I feel about Yozakura Family's super digital artwork anyway. Cover wasn't too bad in comparison.
Bad:
17. (-1)
Candy Flurry - Poorly placed flashback, panelling that doesn't convey flow in its action, and character decisions that just read as one trope after another. Even though I thought the first chapter had potential, it's turned into the prime U19 candidate I also thought it would.
18. ( = )
Ayakashi Triangle - As soon as I saw this chapter was about getting new clothes I knew
exactly where it was going.
19. ( = )
I tell c - That whole explanation for the magnetic tile was... p a i n f u l. This series is a true test to read every week. I almost feel like I enjoyed Our Blood Oath and Blood King more than this.
I fear Blue Box, Candy Flurry, and i Tell C are all in warning or red alert territory. (Blue Box is a little slow and the main character overcomes every dilemma way to logically and reasonably that there is litrally no drama,
Kinda wild to compare Blue Box to those two at this point. I mean, Blue Box is just about to get one of the earliest colour pages in recent memory in the magazine while I Tell C is a bottom dweller making desperate attempts to latch onto something, and Candy Flurry (while too early to tell) doesn't inspire much hope either. I'd also say Blue Box having a main character who manages to thwart drama with newly introduced potential love interests is hardly a negative. If anything it makes him stand out from the modern romcom protagonists we've had in WSJ with his level-headedness.
