Because the character is a kid. it doesn't have to be rational, nor does it have to lead to anything. Plenty of people had crushes on people they couldn't be with when they were kids, the character being gay doesn't change anything about it really, other than dramatizing it tiin a different way.

It have to be rational to me, Will already grew up with Elven and Mike and he knows very well that they like eachother, This season they decided to make him have feelings for Mike without any foreshadowing, Moreover, Mike was already away and Elven was living in Will's house, So it gives a betrayal impression from Will to Elven to me, Specially when she was the main reason why he was saved.

It is clearly there to make the audience react to him and feel sympathy towards a gay character and honestly i didn't feel anything, They should make a proper gay ship if they wanted to make one.

The romance is trash in this series anyway, They are making Nancy a filth cheater, She is allowing Steve to flirt with her, and Jonathan being hypocrite and a liar.

"A walk to remember" is probably the only good written romance in American production. I watched it like 6 times.

A gay Muslim empire won't happen, As homosexualism is not accepted in Arab countries at all, Maybe after 500 years from now. And i bet they won't be open minded to it.
