  • This series hasn't been in the magazine for while, but I predict Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 to come out October 2025 and it may not do Mugen Train numbers, but it will still be really successful.
New Announcement PV for 2025 Demon Slayer movie

It was an easy guess but I have the first part right so far let’s see if I get the October part too

Ichi was the best this week, finally evolving from fun to exciting.

On the other end of the spectrum Astro Royale keeps confusing me, it's simultaneously babys first battle manga (kinda fun one at least) and also organised crime propaganda, which doesnt mix well, could be interesting exploring necessary evil in crisis with some depth, but this chapter too had the expected simplicity and lack of nuance. Some of the lines in this chapter too made me wonder if Wakui is doing PR for the yakuza because he is in debt to them or they have some dirt on him. There is a much better story in this manga than what we are actually getting.

i think he's trying to add what made TR so famous into his new story, which is yakuza groups

Trying to bring his audience back, either way i liked the new chapter and Hibaru's character

It's strange to me because it wasn't like this is the first time he wrote about yakuza, but it was your usual "Bad guys with standards", not straight up heroes.

If he takes the risk of writing [good yakuza] for younger audience, and somehow creates another miracle like what he did to TR for delinquents, he will be legendary. But I seriously doubt that

Hard to rank this week. Think I'm gonna have to go with

1. Ichi the Witch
2. Hunter x Hunter
3. Shinobi Undercover

4. Syd Craft
5. Astro Royale

Ichi has been fantastic this whole arc, but this chapter was just on another level. Love that we're finally getting our bad boi ensemble rolled out. Interesting to have them be Majiks rather than an elite group of evil male witches. So excited to see where this leads.

Hunter x Hunter was just brilliant. Really hope this hiatus is a short one because this cliffhanger is a wild one to leave us on. There's so much I could say but I don't wanna write out an essay for one series.

After a dope fight, we get a great cooldown chapter for Shinobi. Reminded me of why I was initially so in love with the series in the first place. Glad the series managed to pick itself back up after faltering for a short bit.

Syd Craft was just ultra comfy. I really like the set-up, characters, and world being built. Really hope it can sell well despite its low viewcount on digital platforms. Want this to stick around.

Feels weird leaving off both Nue and Kagurabachi, but I really wasn't feeling them this week. Real shame too, given last weeks Kagurabachi honestly might be my favorite chapter of the series. But once people start dying and being brought back in a battle shonen, I start to feel real iffy. Especially given it's seemingly implied Uruha is still alive as well.
Nue wasn't a bad chapter per-se, and honestly I'm going to love the "RESCUE SHIROHA" arc, and it'll probably be my favorite of the series. Doesn't change how much this chapter HURT though.

As a result, Astro just barely made it on my top 5. While there's lots in the chapter I found really dumb. It also just felt like a classic battle shonen, reminded me of reading Jump as a kid in the very early 00's. So I had a lot of fun with it regardless.

Wait a second. Nue's Exorcist. Two dudes show up to take back the girl. The MC's lying flat in his own blood after taking an L from a battle he should've won. The girl pretends to spite him despite being sad that she's gotta be taken, and most likely, to her death. This is the setup to Soul Society arc innit? Well if it's even half as good, that'd be grand, but I don't think they have time to do it because the actual baddies are busy plotting in the background.

The series definitely wears Bleach on its sleeve as a proud influence. Personally, I like Nue's Exorcist much more. Never really cared much for the characters or world building of Bleach. So it's nice to see a "Bleach done right" from my perspective.

But I also don't think the Rescue Shiroha arc will be as long as Soul Society. I expect the arc to get interrupted when the baddies flip the table, and the Fujino family is forced to work with Gakuro and friends for the time being and sort out the rest after.

The problem with this chapter of Nue is that it retroactively made the drawn out fight with Rido (which I actually found quite good) pointless since we had that whole spiel of Gakuro standing his ground, turning the tides, causing Fujino to regain her hope, and suddenly, all of that is derailed and made pointless. The better way to have done this is Rido curb stomp him, have Fujino coldly reject him there, and then do the whole Soul Society arc setup. Not only would Gakuro finally lose a fight (because as this manga goes I get the feeling he just isn't allowed to have a firm loss) you would have a central rivalry to tie the Exorcist Society arc together, since Kawae could just do the whole fight we just read in that arc, with there being better buildup, and the emotional core would have a satisfying ending, since Fujino could regain her resolve then and there, so that her development would be linear and not haphazard, like it is now. As it stands the whole progression feels out of place and clunky, killing a bunch of potential hype and stakes this arc could've had. Instead it just feels exasperating that we'll be seeing the same thing but with a different rival.

Honestly yeah. This sums up a lot of what I wasn't able to articulate. Makes such a climactic fight feel so anti-climactic in the end. And you're right about Gakuro not being able to lose a fight. Definitely a valid criticism. Unfortunately this upcoming Save Shiroha arc doesn't seem like one that would make sense for him to narratively lose either.
Maybe he'll end up losing during the big battle against the sealed yokai. Leading to a timeskip and a much darker part 2. Maybe Gakuro can get all buff like Guts for it. Then maybe Fem Gakuro can catch on as a dommie mommy.

I don’t really read Nue’s Exorcist so I have to ask…

Did Gakuro really turn into girl?

And if so when?

I’ll post my top rankings when voting starts later, but for now I’ll just drop my chapter thoughts:

Me & Roboco: The fact that Roboco got mad at Gorilla for eating his own Mont Blanc kind of gave it away in a way, so I wasn’t really surprised by much in this chapter. Another point towards my agenda of Roboco being the least likable character in Roboco, haha.

Blue Box: Yeah, Dad definitely heard that and is processing it. I almost wonder if this will all resolve with Chinatsu losing again but being okay with it, and her dad not being critical of her over it.

One Piece: Best girl Robin getting what she deserves, we are so up. Elbaf continues to be beautiful in the most random of spots.

Akane-banashi: About what I expected, yeah. Good first story for him to tie into his real-life experiences. Wondering with that ending if we’ll leave the rest of the backstory for later or if this’ll keep going all through to the modern day.

Sakamoto Days: I somehow completely disregarded the concept of what was behind Tenkyu’s eyepatch until just now. A lot of sudden development this chapter, although admittedly Shin’s not looking too favored to beat this guy outright right now. It’ll either take another revelation, or a certain gambler…

Ichi the Witch: Ah, that explains a few things… while also opening the door to a lot of other questions. Human-like Majiks could do a lot for this series, so I’m interested to see where they go with this. I’m sure Kumugi enjoyed being covered in stench though, haha.

Kagurabachi: Very interesting dynamic shift: Chihiro’s got a new squad he’s gonna get to know now while Hakuri stays tabled for now. I still do want to see more from Hiyuki, but I’ll settle for these new allies, since they seem like they could make a flavorful 4-person party dynamic-wise. Also did not realize that the Owl was something actually real and visible, I thought it was just a visual representation of Samura’s ability to sense things everywhere.

Syd Craft: Setting up a nice little rivalry here, it seems like anyone Syd sets up a new relationship with recently is a reader of Elio’s book… I wonder if this is his one gateway to having normal friends.

Undeas Unluck: Some real insanity going on here, but dang if it isn’t fun. Them using all their powers in different ways to accomplish otherwise impossible tasks is really cool. I’ll also be curious to see what exactly Heart does with Love being it’s fuel and Unluck being what triggers for it.

Astro Royale: Lowkey a really pivotal chapter for defining an endgame beyond just taking out Shio. I wonder if we’re gonna get to see what the other squads are doing while Hibaru goes to Yokohama or if we’ll just hear back from them later.

Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: How was this both the goofiest chapter and still felt like there was a consistent serious plot thread chaining the whole thing together? I’m losing track of what’s going on but it’s funny so I don’t mind.

Mission: Yozakura Family: Dang. There it is. And as I was expecting, Kyoichiro isn’t going to let this arc end without flexing his stuff, resolving his and Taiyo’s conflict finally. Really excited for the next chapter.

Hima-Ten!: It was nice watching them spend time together, even if the lipstick thing was clear bait. I kinda get the feeling of knowing someone for ages and only just talking to them for real for the first time much later.

Witch Watch: Me and Ibuki are on the same agenda, someone’s boutta die. I’m still putting my money on the Kappa guy, maybe he saves Hibana from getting killed and it changes her worldview, or he just saves Kuon and leaves that lasting impression.

Super Psychic Policeman Chojo: The author always has such a unique way of drawing faces that I don’t tend to see elsewhere. I’m now craving spicy curry…

Shinobi Undercover: Operation Boyfriend proposition makin’ it feel a little bit like Kill Blue (but without the part where the MC has good reason to immediately turn down the idea). Kind of unsure if this series is genuinely going for the romantic angle or just keeping that on the comedic side of things.

Nue’s Exorcist: Dang, now 2 of them have had to kiss him for innocuous life-saving reasons? Now the next person will have to find a way to get their kiss in, haha. But seriously, feels hard to win such a grueling fight and then just immediately be overpowered again and fail to accomplish the goal. Also that one guy just maxxing out how hateable he can be in as little screentime as possible by dehumanizing everyone in the room himself included, dang.

Kill Blue: Welp, that wrapped it up pretty quick. I guess this is like unlocking a new power, but for food-eating? So Noren’s getting her share of battle manga experience as well.

Hakutaku: I guess at this rate this game will be the focus of the rest of the manga. The other Pixel Summit people look like a whole gang of folks pretty much, which makes me think there’ll be conflict there.

Overall if there was a theme to this week it’d probably be eating/regaining energy, given we had two chapters about noodles, one about curry, one about pastries, and three others about post-arc recovery/road ahead stuff.

19. Nue's Exorcist: Speaking of being confused...are we still going at it? What about the huge fight Gakuro had until now, wasn't it to not let her go away like this? Wasn't she convinced of that at the end of it? I feel like the latest ten weeks of development were wasted.
The point was that Gakuro wouldn't let Rido take her away. But he couldn't convince Rido to let them go, so Shiroha had to give up because they would literally just die in the alternate dimension.
But it's clear Shiroha's not going to be passive anymore.

37th is the MHA spin-off, Nue is 48th. Interesting difference in rank between Astro and the rest of them, anyway, though I guess it could be explained away by Dandadan backlog hogging up a lot of the spots. I'm really curious how it's going to perform for the full month.

RIP Hakutaku, feels like it's probably setting up a makeshift final arc.

Kill Blue also finished up the school festival so depending on what happens next chapter, we should get a good idea of if the recent awful placements are actually going to kill it off or if it's final and it'll just continue as normal at the bottom.

Also Akari in Kiyoshi was certainly hiding a lot under her clothes, where on earth did those come from? I suppose the creator is an Oda assistant after all.
