The way Jump is pushing the series is totally acceptable, specially for the moment, it's a nearly 100k new series (in the month) which is a battle shounen that is for sure going to run for much longer than stuff like Sakamoto and probably Kagurabachi too and they can fully push it with covers & color pages, i wouldn't call it "favoritism" when the series is checking all the boxes when it comes to being an immediate future flagship, Saito & cia know that Ichi has the potential to become really big in Japan and worldwide.
Does it really check all the so-called boxes though? Part of the initial hype for Ichi could mostly boil down to 2 reasons: a) its written by a veteran author coming from another magazine in Osamu Nishi and b) a comeback to the magazine by Usazaki Shiro, who could've been a major success if not for the actions of her previous author partner in Act-Age, which unfortunately took her down as well.

Don't get me wrong, Ichi is indeed on another level compared to the middle performers like Nue, Shinobi and Hima-Ten! It isn't wrong to call it a future flagship looking at the current state of the magazine. But Ichi's performance as of now shows that it is still a level below the likes of SakaDays, Blue Box and Kagurabachi. So far, it doesn't seem that Ichi have lived up to the hype, stagnating and achieving a meager Tsugimanga boost despite the numerous promotions over a period of several months. Did it display results that matched the marketing it got? In my opinion, not really.

Perhaps it may change in the future, or a future anime production could boost it, who knows. But that would be meaningless speculation as of the current.

With that out of the way, my votes for the week:
Issue #1

1. Hima-Ten! 69
2. Kagurabachi 103
3. The Mage Next Door 5
4. Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits 4
5. One Piece 1167

Ultimately none of this matter if the manga isn't well received, even someone like Kishimoto can flop big if not well received despite getting all the hype in the world and initial push by Jump.

You're comparing a series with 6 volumes to 2 series with over 20 volumes and anime adaptations already broadcasted, i don't know what's the point, and both of these series are already in their final legs while Ichi is just starting and already aiming for 100k in a month, not to mention the internal survey reception is obviously great. I don't know what "living up to the hype" is supposed to mean, there's no official standard or sales level that Ichi was supposed to reach, the series is a certified big hit and that's the only thing Jump cares, feels like you're just imposing some self standards and judging the series by that, depending of the person talking even Kagurabachi can be something not that impressive if imposing certain standards.

Well we can just look at the comparisons now can we? As I've mentioned SakaDays, BlueBox and Kagurabachi, we'll use those to compare. I'll just use pennycryman's graphs for the sake of convenience. (Thanks)

Sakamoto Days

Blue Box

Kagurabachi

Ichi the Witch

Since we're comparing with Ichi, let's ignore all the other volumes after 5 for now. As you can see there's two types of growth, a one-time rise then stagnation, and a continuous increase. Ichi the Witch and Blue Box fall into the former, SakaDays and Kagurabachi into the latter. For the former, Ichi went from 40k+ to 70k+ from volume 1 to 2, and pretty much stayed there with the latest almost reaching 80k. Likewise Blue Box did the same, only that it went from 60k+ to 110k-ish. Meanwhile, SakaDays started out at the lowest of the 4 and ended the same, from 15k+ to almost 60k. Lastly, Kagurabachi went from 20k+ to almost 140k.

For the latter two, you could see (at the time) that there had been a continuous growth over the course of the 5 volumes. SakaDays briefly stagnated from volume 3 to 4, but then rose again from 4 to 5, so while its future was still uncertain, there's hope given past performance. On the other hand, Blue Box and Ichi had simply jumped once and then stagnate, with minuscle growth. Ichi dipped once from volume 3 to 4, but rose again from volume 4 to 5. Even that can be chalked up to the Tsugimanga win, and again it was still a small growth that failed to breach the 80k mark.

Now looking onward for SakaDays, Blue Box and Kagurabachi, we see that SakaDays continued to grow all the way up to volume 11, then went up and down till it peaked at volume 16, and repeats from there. Blue Box on the other hand continued to stagnate, then slipped from volume 14 to 16 (though that may also be due to a 7 day vs 3 day first week), before it surge way beyond to peak at volume 19 past the 150k mark, though now its falling again for the past 3 volumes. Then there's Kagurabachi, which peaked right after volume 5 at volume 6, finally passing the 140k mark. It then fell but again, looking at SakaDays' and Blue Box's performance, who knows if it'll just be another trend of going up and down. The latest one increased, but just like with Ichi, this just may be due to the popularity poll instead.

Did I disagree and say that Ichi is a failure? No, I clearly agreed that it is indeed a future flagship. I'll repeat myself from my previous reply, Ichi's sales may change in the future. Who knows what may happen, but again any changes, as of the current, is merely speculation. Right now, my opinion is that Ichi's performance to the treatment it got has been rather lackluster.

As for judging by my own standards... what else am I going to judge from? Is there suppose to be some official guideline for that? Please.

Circulation numbers for Ichi are really good to be fair. Not that I think it needs to be 1 or cover/color every week, but that's just the usual Saito bias with his series. Shinobi's treatment is way more overpushed in this sense and everytime its pointed out there's way more defense for it.

I think the cover for issue 3 is going to go for jujutsu kaisen modulo.

Color pages will be for Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi, Akane Banashi and betwenn either Blue Box or a one shot.

You just described the trajectory of these series first few volumes, what's exactly the point? is trying to exemplify why you think Ichi sales are lackluster? If so i simply disagree with being lackluster.

As for judging by my own standards... what else am I going to judge from? Is there suppose to be some official guideline for that? Please.
Maybe try judging by the industry standards? How you're gonna judge what a manga has to reach using your own standards when that is just a personal thing with no necessary correlation to the reality? is just something vague that can totally differ from person to person, If my own standards is that something has to sell at least 200k/300k copies to be considered a big hit because that's how it used to be with Shonen Jump, even Kagurabachi would be lackluster which is obviously not the case, that's how some people still so stuck in that idea that Jump still the same magazine from pre 2019.

I know this is your personal opinion and it's fine but there's a difference between personal opinion and what the industry actually considers as a big hit, or even the magazine in question considers, and Ichi pretty much check all the boxes of a early big hit by the current industry standards and Jump own standards right now 👍

That comparison doesn't even work as anyone can clearly see that physical copies sell less every year that passes.
Compare it with other series released in 2024/2025.
See how that goes.

Not gonna lie, feels kinda hype seeing Sakuragi in the cover as if there's actually a chapter, is just a interview and they put that big in the cover because they know will grab people's eyes, imagine if the promised sequel actually happens, that would move mountains for Shonen Jump :grin

No, it's the interview Suzuki is doing with Inoue as one of the Sakamoto Days anniversary project.
Oh, I remember now. That’s right.

Even a new oneshot would make it the best selling Jump issue of the year.
