Becoming an axe bait mangaka for short term to act as cushion for other series seems like a nice gig ngl... like, you come in not really expecting to last long. Just collect the pay then go. Treat it like a short term gig.

Not sure if you are aware of it. But in corporate there is a practice of hiring sacrificial peons to be laid off to protect their core members.
Actually, I'm not sure it's great for short term, because from what I've heard, they have to go into debt to hire enough assistants to keep up with the schedule and prep. Maybe with all the money prep and exclusive contracts mangaka are at least not in debt from the start... I've heard that they need at least 1 year of publication to get back their money (but I think it was in general for weekly, so...).
But anyway, even if they don't get rich, it's a great line to put in your resume. It's easier to find work elsewhere.
BUT. It's totally depressing as an author to see that your series is not liked and readers are demeaning you, each week, saying "why is this series not axed yet???".... That's why they say "don't do ego search" (don't know the term in English).

I didn't know for corporate. I don't think it's the case here, because they'd prefer every series to be a hit, not cushions for the others. It costs a lot of money to make a series. I think they just don't have enough mangaka they deem able to publish in their mag. They're really looking for hardworkers, like 12-14 hours a day, no vacation, stress like hell AND that can make manga that sell. There is denatality and the young gen doesn't want to work too much (I taught some of them French lol. They were so like French students, like "I want a job with lots of vacation but with high pay", actually, it was fun).

Actually, they may be in a more desperate situation than shonen mag (IMHO), because shonen mag is bessatsu and magapoke at the same time, so they can shuffle mangaka here and there easily, but jump henshuubu is not the same as jump+...

EDIT: I'd like to add: I think you may underestimate how much time, energy and all go into making a series (scenario, structure, all the designs etc.). This prep work takes time and a lot of effort, and if you have to throw it after 24 weeks to begin again from scratch.... Scary as hell for a mangaka.

It'd be nice to see Iwashiro return in some fashion so they can properly announce the Psyren anime in WSJ too.

Like a special bonus chapter or even just a new oneshot or something (like they did for Numa Shun to announce the Chojo anime with a colour page despite having already cancelled it).

Has he done anything at all since that oneshot soon after Kagamigami ended? I know some authors leave the industry after their biggest ideas end up cancelled (though in this case, we knows he's been working with this production so he's still around in some fashion at least).

These are the reviews from last week. Gonna read this week's chapters after this.

Votes #2:
1) Kiyoshi
2) Shinobi
3) Ichi
4) Modulo
5) WW

Kiyoshi: What kind of morons raised her? That would be your best bud, wouldn't it? The first half was super cute and wholesome, this really is a moe manga with battles.

Shinobi: Is Japan really still so old-fashioned that boys and girls don't eat together, or is that just her? Anyway, cute chapter. They really are good kids, all of them.

Ichi: Going by the numbers, there should be 7 of them, but we're only seeing 6. I hope Chrono is prepared for a surprise.

Modulo: Yikes.

WW: Also yikes. And yeah, if the guy was already too strong as a kid, this won't be making things easier for him.

OP is finally getting to the point. These flashback really are brutal... have we ever seen one that didn't end with people dying?

KGB: Extra yikes. So many series are taking a turn for the worst this week.

Gonron: I actually do like the character work in this series. The story is very standard, but the execution ain't bad.

Sakamoto: Well, that solves that problem. Now they can feel free to go and kill him.

Mage: That one panel reminded me of Cosmos again. Normally I'd complain about the lack of action here, but this week I'm grateful to have a chapter where things aren't going to hell in a handbasket.

Hero: Hahaha! Well, if it works, it works. Though that went so fast I'm kinda wondering if she isn't another alien.

Roboco: This felt kinda desperate.

He published Hoshikuzu no Sorakil in 2027 on GIGA:

That's what I'm talking about, that oneshot was released almost 9 years ago. Has there been nothing from him in 9 years?

Pretty cool MV but if anything it just really annoyed me the fact that they included Kill Blue and made a rap for the series, why rush the manga if you're still going to promote the series as being part of the magazine 2 months after???

Note that Kill Blue got a section in the video, but not Chojo despite it also having an anime in the works.

So maybe it wasn't cancelled, despite appearing that way? It did still get colour pages towards the end including for the final chapter after all. There was clearly rushing involved but, especially with it being included here while Chojo isn't, I think it's totally possible that Fujimaki got disheartened by people not liking the student council characters and decided to end it early himself.

He had just spent a year struggling at the bottom having to skip characters and rush plot points due to nobody liking the Mitsuoka Challenges and, with it already guaranteed to get an anime, maybe he just didn't want to go through the same thing again with the student council challenges.

Chojo was a straight up axe, Kill Blue was a soft one.

Btw, i don't buy the argument of Fujimaki ending by himself because Kill Blue wasn't even doing really bad in the last months:

Ch94: 10th Place
Ch95: Color Page
Ch96: 11th Place
Ch97: 8th Place
Ch98: Color Page (2nd Anniversary)
Ch99: 11th
Ch100: 9th
Ch101: 12th (Bottom 4)
Ch102: Color Page
Ch103: 10th
Ch104: 12th
Ch105: Color Page
Ch106: 14th (Bottom 3)

Ch107: 15th (Bottom 2)
Ch108: 14th (Bottom 2)
Ch109: 11th
Ch110: 12th (Bottom 5)

Ch111: 14th (Bottom 3)
Ch112: 14th (Bottom 4)
Ch113: 12th
Ch114: 6th
Ch115: Color Page (Final Chapter)

KB had way worse moments in the ToC than this, for me it still Saito simply making dumb decisions.

Surely that makes it more likely if anything? Since Kill Blue wasn't really doing bad enough to be cancelled (and had even recently risen in the ToC and gotten a bunch of colour pages after a stint at the bottom). Sometimes as a writer you just get tired of the grind and want it to end (especially if what you want to write isn't what readers want to read). And in this case, an anime adaptation is a big enough accomplishment to finish off fairly satisfied even if there's more story he could've done plot-wise.

It's clearly a different situation to Chojo at any rate. That to me seems like it was just cancelled normally and maybe even Jump was surprised at the anime happening. Hence the "oops, better give him a oneshot so we can still announce it with a colour page".

The funny thing is that story wise the current battle isn't even "finale" material, it's not the big boss, just one of the big sub bosses, so if the manga does ends in 4/5 chapters (it will fill vol 4 with ch35) it will be the "our adventure continues" type of ending unless Kawaguchi just quickly shoves the final boss like next chapter and do a final battle.
LMAO!!!

Issue 3:

1. Nue's Exorcist: This manga's whole past was basically a black box until now, so it feels insane to be seeing a flashback like this. Gekka is a fun character and very different from Raisei and Gakuro, I'm glad we aren't going the Vongola Primo route for the previous Nue contractor. Lore is being explored and it's great to see the Hyo and how different they were, hope we get to see Kasha, Gashadokuro and Suzaku as well in this flashback.

2. Modulo: A very emotional first half with Yuka coming to terms with how much she loved her life and her brother and a very hype start to the battle. Mahoraga!! Gege knows how to end a chapter, but Iwasaki deserves all the praise in the world for the fantastic art as well.

3. Hima-ten: One of the best things about Kanna is how she's the "prettiest" character of the group, but the author didn't make her an idiot. She's aware of what she's doing and feels more mature than even Tenichi, such a good romcom heroine. Dialogue was great as usual.

4. Someone Hertz: Good job at making Mimei's frustation come as both relatable, but also showcase as one of these sad moments of youth that lead to personal growth. I know he'll eventually fully join her world, after all, they're the same height.

5. JK Hero: Heartwarming every week.

I translated the Nue's Exorcist part in the new MV:

強くないと 何も選べないんだ
皆を救え 最強のメサイア
過去のトラウマ 超えて黄金期
幻妖討伐 鵺の陰陽師

Tsuyoku nai to nani mo erabenai nda
Minna o sukue saikyou no Mesaiya
Kako no torauma koete ougonki
Genyou toubatsu Nue no Onmyouji

If you’re not strong, you can’t choose anything
Save everyone, the Strongest Messiah
Overcome past trauma, reach the Golden era
Exterminate Spirits, Nue’s Exorcist

After a few good chapters Gonron Egg really stuck one of the worst ever

The old dude was narrating EVERYTHING that was happening. What's even the point of having an art media then? lol

The only thing that I found strange in this week's Akane was that Kaisei's shin'uchi promotion was already a "battle" between him and Issho -- or, better, their versions of God of Death. And noww they are doing it again. We didn't watch the first, but we know what happened next. I wish we knew how many weeks/months ago it was.

Nonetheless, great chapter.

KGB and JJK were also amazing. Fat Sakamoto to the rescue was great too.

@Shinuki no Reborn 's prediction about Otr was funny. Will they really ax it soon? Elusive is definitely ending. Harukaze does not seem to be ending so fast, but maybe they'll end as the "our adventure continues" -type axe, like Shinuki's possibility about Otr.
