A lot of these new series make you wonder what the editor read to decide to serialize it, but Under Doctor is at least a case where the first chapter is just really competent. So that gives it a leg up over quite a few of these previous serializations.
I think the naruto influence is obvious in this one. Like, he probably had a train of thought that the hyuga clan would a perfect ability for doctors and what not. That and MHA when it comes to art and vibe. I thought he was trying to capture the same 'You can be a hero' feeling from this debut chapter.

I love how everyone who became hori's assistant steals his artstyle lol.

Under Doctor attacks like Neji and the series is probably as we anticipated. Sakamoto is ending, let's Under Doctor take its place as the crime action series.

Nobody saying the most obvious influence on Under Doctor makes me think about how Fist of the North Star despite being one of the biggest and most popular manga ever in Japan has somehow become really obscure in 2026 in West

Heck, Haiji is literally Toki

Oh my god, Mankichi is right!

It does seem similar to Fist of the North Star with the main character.

Could we be seeing a revival of something similar here? If so am game.

Fist of the North Star was my first entry in the weekly shonen jump 80s period of manga and i do not regret it.

There's a ton of cameos on page 45 of under doctor.

Galaxy Express 999, Sekimatsu Leader and even horikoshi's there.

Issue 9:

First of all, my impressions for Under Doctor (it didn't make top 5, so it's not a vote):

It actually surpassed one of my issues with Saito's Era: the first chapter's scenario/setting is not bland! A hijacked airplane is a cool place to start your story. Nice job. Yet I could reverse engineer it and see that this is clearly NOT a manga about medicine or healthcare. The author wanted to write a battle series and just landed on "medicine" as the gimmick. A main character that looks like Black Jack, but is more of Hokuto no Ken's Toki than anything.

By giving him the ability to instantly pinpoint the issues and how to cure the patients, Under Doctor basically sealed any chance of the actual health issues being interesting, like they usually are in stories about doctors. What's usually fun in them is seeing the doctors testing and looking for the causes of the issues. When I'm watching or reading Apothecary Diaries, the fun is seeing Maoamo gather clues and ask questions to understand what may be behind the current case. With a magical power like this, it's hard to imagine this aspect being interesting.

Pressure points are fun as a power, but it's not real science as well (that other doctor bowing down to him was silly), so that side of the story isn't showing potential at all for me. The action is cool, but also considering the pressure points, it'll be like Hokuto no Ken where later opponents will just tank them and we don't have much now to see the fights can get more elaborate.

It's a decent chapter in the way it presents the premise, it flows well, the art is good, main character has charisma. But making me not care for the Doctor stuff from the first chapter already removed much of my interest.

As for my rankings:

1. Nue's Exorcist: Reina is so casual about how she's interested in Gakuro in a physical way, it's cool. Somehow this gives her love for him a more grounded form than the other heroines. I don't think for a second she's a serious contender, so this chapter is more about Gakuro getting out of the "pure" pedestal he created for what a romance is, something so amazing it's unachievable for mortals -- the heart shell will play an important role in that and how his whole journey is about self worth and taking active decisions instead of excluding himself from his own life. No, he's just a teenager like everyone else here. Also excited to see the Level 4s being the midbosses for the arc, really good designs.

2. Modulo: Dabura is having his Gojo x Toji moment. Getting the main "villain" have a whole character arc like this, growing both as an individual and as a fighter is amazing, the representation of the fight as a ballroom dance shows how much Mahoraga is letting him evolve and adapt as well. Connections can show and evolve people in extremely different ways, but are all equally important. And that last scene is exactly what a cool battle manga can offer when it nails both writing and art. Modulo is so much fun.

3. Ruri Dragon: This chapter wanted to showcase the different ways people can be part of each other's lives. The doctor that helped Ruri's birth, mom casually telling her daughter how much she loves her, a Zoom/Discord call between friends. All of this is moving us to the hyped dad encounter and how different or similar to these human moments it'll be.

4. Hima-ten: Himari always will be the best character here. Ono just goes up a level everytime we see things from her point of view. She wants to move things for Tenichi and for herself and can't get stuck like this. The whole conversation with Sumire showed the maturity she's so proud of, but also how much of that is also based on feelings born from adolescence.

5. JK Hero: Absurdist slice of life series always need an equally absurd growing cast and the aliens here were the perfect add to the world. I know they existed from the first chapter, but going back to them was the right move. It's another Found Family to contrast with our main couple, it gives them a challenge and character moments outside from the usual. The gag with the fight going down behind was really good and showcases the possibilities this opens up even though this is probably getting axed.

-

As for Harukaze Mound. I said this before, but I think it got basically axed for being too simple and basic. Matsuura's art is great for sure, but the writing is dry and felt like it was intentionally trying to chase the footsteps left by the greats. The issue is that it doesn't work, a spokon needs to be its own thing. Why should I read this baseball manga when there are so many other baseball manga doing the same story of: unusual main character joining an underdog team to chase the Koshien dream? Yeah, there's the aspect of the brothers meeting again... but the way they do that is getting to Koshien. So it's the exact same goal all baseball series have.

Maybe it could work if we got the perspective of both brothers. Getting the trajectories for both of them, their matches and journeys and in what ways they're equal and what ways they're different. Instead of this, the manga overly focused on Ibuki, a character that centralized too much of the narrative and the growth of the team. If all answers for everyone's issue can be found from a fellow team member, everything looks smaller. I think it was a mistake to not have the coach from the go, as it's the kind of figure that is more believable as a mentor.

And they were aware people found it bland as the last 10 chapters or so tried to up the weirdness of the opponents. So that's how you get the guy with the shadow aura and the Lego Face Titan as final adversaries in a manga that tried to be grounded for 20 weeks before. It was a late change that made it feel more disjointed than anything.

Still really like Matsuura's art, so I hope he finds something that lasts longer.

Under doctor is great! I loved it so much...
Also the premise that a killer use its power to heal and see weak points as doctor is simply amazing. They have taken hungry joker and sporting salt, please at least save this one. Also the art is amazing... this will for sure will succed..

Some quick thoughts along with my (early!) Issue 9 votes:

1. Kagurabachi - Just crazy work here. Shiba still going everywhere and at his wits end, seeing some legit internal dialogue like he’s a prime character for once, Samura finally going all out after realizing that he’s willing to sacrifice even himself to gamble on Chihiro, and now a very direct big boy fight that I’m sure will only end in a partial victory of sorts.

2. Ichi the Witch - I was fully in “say sike right now” mode thinking we were getting another Jiki prophecy, but the present tense words made it too real. Gosh, that face on her was devastating work from Usazaki. At the very least she was struck not in the belly so at this rate the baby can still make it, but I am greatly losing confidence in either of the child’s parents making it out of here. Not to mention we still haven’t checked back with Desscaras?? Things are looking very down right now.

3. Blue Box - These three are fun together, and I’m so glad that Taiki’s taking the time to just say things aloud and earnestly when Hina isn’t able to. Everyone needs a hug in this series and if I can’t give it then they better start giving some to each other.

4. Hima-Ten! - Just delightful work from Himari, and this 1-month timer will I’m sure set a lot of things in motion. Sumire also being there to egg Himari into spending more time with Tenichi was much appreciated.

5. JJK Modulo - The Mahoraga and Dabura dancing scene killed me, but also the fight has just been cooking. Yuji stepping in over here to quell additional political squabbles is about what I would want from him, since his best use here is as a de-escalator of conflict (did not know he could do blood manipulation but I am hearing that’s a JJK manga spoiler and it’s funnier to stay clueless so I’ll let it be).

6. Ruridragon - The video call was fun and a surprising way to get more lore, not to mention getting to peel away more layers of the teacher/expert and her mom. I’m still very anxious to see this dragon confrontation and how it will go down, given both the artistic and in-world ramifications it has.
7. Harukaze Mound - Obvious rushed finisher is obvious, but the art was poppin’ and the brothers coming together to tie it off was great.
8. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi - Just some nice juicy backstory amidst some crazy fighting. The pull-up save from Hitsuji is kinda Mickey, but then again that’s the whole tone of the series so I can’t hate on it.
9. Under Doctor - I enjoyed it. Didn’t captivate me like crazy but it was fun, and the old doctor guy was giving demon dad from Kiyoshi or Embers coach vibes, for better or worse. I do agree that these next few chapters and how they play out will set the tone for if this series has any hope of survival, though.
10. Sakamoto Days - Some clever work going into the de-realization of Takamura within Uzuki, and I imagine Sakamoto’s gonna do the same for Rion as well, leaving Uzuki alone with himself.

Honorable mention to Roboco for having some really good moments with Gorilla getting absolutely pulverized. I also quite enjoyed Someone Hertz, Akane, Elusive Samurai, Shinobi, and Witch Watch. Surprisingly I think I enjoyed the Gonron chapter more than the Mage Next Door.

With Nue, I’m starting to feel like the arc structure parallels Kawae’s author comments. Much like we had a set number of choco eggs and that number ended up being greatly modified and then truncated, I get the sense that these 5 bosses of the island are put in place for some of them to get subverted (i.e., I doubt we’re fighting all 5 of them one at a time as intended). As for the actual chapter content with the heart seal stuff, it was good; I do think you could fully cut the bikini removal malfunction and the other breast feel (there are far better ways to feel someone’s heartbeat) and the chapter would lose no information or emotional impact while being significantly more tasteful (personal bias speaking).

Overall really good issue with pretty much no bad chapters, save for maybe Mage Next Door.

I'm playing the long game of channeling my energy into the timeline where Under Doctor is axed but the Kento Amemiya series somehow lasts lol

I'm an agent of chaos and I just think it would be really funny to watch the US melt down :evil

Do any of the manga from this batch have a chance of being a pillar for the magazine?

The series has a actual professional and medicine university teacher as consultant, so the author isnt going to just create stuff out of nowhere and slap it as actual medical information

I know that. But the content itself still is about a guy that sees magical light points to identify issues and cures them with Hokuto no Ken powers. The only thing that could somewhat resemble medical procedure was the surgery that got off-screened and they just tell us he's great at it in Hakutaku fashion. His powerset makes it hard to imagine scenarios with actual medicine.

I'm going to be completely honest, I really don't have much to say about Under Doctor. It was competent, but that's really it. Nothing about it made me want to read more, I didn't find it all that funny (so I don't know where the Spy x Family comparisons are coming from considering what made that work was that the first chapter was goofy and funny as a contrast to the setting), the art didn't really connect with me, and the premise already feels superficial.

Sometimes, when you go for these "what if I was raised one way, but decided to become the opposite instead?" ideas, you quickly realize you shouldn't do that because the opposite isn't an interesting story to tell. Yes, you do get to basically save anyone that's in danger because you can see where their problems are. Now where's the conflict? You're a doctor that can save anyone and you already have no doubts about being evil instead. What's the scenario where that doesn't happen? It turns out they have no weak points and you have to...find a weakness anyway in order to actually beat them, which is the same thing as just seeing the weak point anyway (just with pointless extra steps)? This is a basic yes or no question of "can you save them?", so how can you make a multi chapter plot without it feeling stretched. If you have to find the cure or remedy anyway, what's the point of the premise of being able to see the weak point immediately?

I think there's also the problem that the first half of the chapter (the medical drama part) is the far more interesting route the series can take, but everyone already knows it's going to go in the second half's direction the second the reception turns slightly south, which would just make it another assassin battle series. Being a doctor and having to decide if you're able to respect your patient's wishes while saving their life, actually figuring out what's wrong with the patient, all the potential nutcases you can have for patients. That feels like they'd all be more interesting than "enemy organization that wants to rule the world 91201" or "mysterious antagonist that ohmygod, turns out to actually be related to the mc's backstory, isn't that shocking?!" that the battle manga half is bound to come up with.

There's some other weird stuff like how the transition to the second half felt kind of hand wavey (it technically makes sense, but I don't know. I don't think plane jackers would really come up with an elaborate plan to hijack the plane), the start of the chapter framing the flight attendent as someone far more important than she ended up being to the chapter, and a battle manga once again barely showing a battle in chapter 1 to give the reader a good idea on how you would draw a battle, but that's stuff that only matters to chapter 1. If later chapters fix them, it won't bother me. Still not really interested though.

holy fuck, Under Doctor was really good! not mind blowing but it is the most interesting debut in a very very very long time

I think if it can juggle the Black Jack influences and present a more shonen style take on it with some obvious Vash influences thrown in, it'll stick around for a long time. Desperately needed something like this.

Very top heavy issue this week but overall still a good issue, the usual 3 (JJK, Kagurabachi and Ichi) are really fucking amazing and the rest are varying levels of good to great. Harukaze was lackluster for me and honestly i don't think i even have much to say now it's over except I'd like to see them again but with something else? idk man it never clicked with me as much as it should've and that sucked but it is what it is. Elusive Samurai ending inching closer, I'm so excited to see how Matsui ends this. I once again reiterate this is a generational final arc and this man is a god at writing these.

Yelp, i liked the first chapter of under doctor.

Thought it was kinda of a much needed breath of fresh air in a way. Now i think some here made a good point in that it should try and play the medical drama part well and not just focus on high octane action, the issue will be how to combine both to make a genuine good read overall.

That is the deciding factor of this whole series, but i admit am quite curious to see how it develops in future chapters.
