Nue is on a downwards trend. Shinobi is on an upwards trend. They care about these things. Hope this helps.
You guys really oversell how much it's growing, lol. It's basically stagnated and you're ignoring it's pushed much more. Would it sell the same if it was treated normally? We don't know.

Again, if Shinobi was this much more popular and made so much money, companies like Bandai Namco and Konami would be making merch and events for it. They don't because there's no demand.

If all they cared about was pure sales we would still have series like 6P, KB, Ichinose, Cipher and Astro instead of Kiyoshi.
I mean, I do think these were stupid and I think it's only defended here because people don't like Kill Blue. Trends don't go on forever, you don't just assume something will grow forever or decline forever, sometimes they plateau (Shinobi's case), Astro and Kill Blue got axed in numbers that Kiyoshi ended up never reaching -- Kiyoshi isn't even selling at its peak level anymore, by the way.

What is consistent is that having an anime in production always meant a manga could go on, at least until the first season started. Saito broke this industry trend by axing both Kill Blue and Chojo to keep Kiyoshi. So yes, I think he's uniquely bad and biased.

Thriller Bark feels really short after Water 7/Enie's Lobby, which was 2 arcs in 1.

Undead Unluck also got a bunch of industry attention and a comparable amount of online talk, but at the end of the day, it's anime underperformed and lives as a passion project while Yozakura which was largely ignored by the industry is now pretty profitable. Jump also isn't going to care about these things because the people who engage with these deals aren't in their traditional demographics, and will still be profitable with or without extra magazine push.

It's current sales are up 50% from volume one and last volume grew by 1.3K with one less week tracked. It's a <20K seller, gradual growth is better than nothing. Nue currently sells less than what it sold with volume one and circulation went down (120K per volume with the volume 10 announcement vs 108K with the volume 12 announcement). Hima's like 300 copies ahead of volume 1 sales. It's also less likely Hima or Nue would grow with Shinobi's push.

Again, you're ignoring it's pushed like it's Kagurabachi and Ichi. You don't know if it's keep going up forever, this is the issue in these threads: any decline -> flop and deserves no promotion, no matter how much it sells and all other metrics like merch sales, active fanbase, industry interest.

There's nothing guaranteed about Shinobi growing because they already give it way more attention. And again, it's absurd to me you guys are arguing it deserves 5 color pages, including LCP in a double issue, while Hima-ten deserves a single color page in 10 issues and Nue gets stuck in the bottom 4 forever. No one is asking them to stop promoting Shinobi, but it's absurd how much it's pushed. You're basically arguing that Nue and Hima-ten don't deserve any promotion, but Shinobi deserves to be treated like Kagurabachi 2 because it grows very little (also, I'm almost sure it already had volumes selling worse or the same as the previous one).

If anything, this idea of growth x decline was already proven wrong by Kiyoshi. It stopped growing and we ended up with a 10k seller in, while they got rid of Astro that sold more and had a more active fanbase, was getting picked up by overseas companies and basically more likely to plateau above Kiyoshi's sales. Axed Kill Blue sold more than Kiyoshi recent volumes as well.

It's also less likely Hima or Nue would grow with Shinobi's push.
We don't know this. Hima-ten is even worse because it gets almost no marketing at all.

Yknow what? Nope. Deleted my comment, I refuse to keep arguing over this, my mind very much is not changing and I am getting genuinely pissed, not good cause this is a magazine for middle schoolers, I shouldn't be doing this lmao. Not apologizing for anything, but I don't want to keep going either. Have fun.

You're kind of putting words in my mouth atp. I think both series deserve more push! I literally complain about Kiyoshi every Tuesday because Usui spit in my tea and cast a curse on my ancestors. I explained as such in my 20 paragraph long comment! But I think the issue is that I think Shinobi's growth makes the push worthwhile (it doesn't cost Jump anything to put it on colors after all) and you think that it's not enough. Those are both valid takes imo, I can't really prove that Shinobi's growth is enough to be actually profitable, but 2K sales are signifigant in the modern industry, and if all Jump needs to do is stamp it next to Kagurabachi and Ichi to get more money, they will! They're businessmen. I obviously don't think that Shinobi is a KGB/Ichi level hit!

Also, the thing that people are ignoring is, this is a cycle. If they see an underperformer showing signs of something greater they'll platform it, and if it doesn't show results, they'll move on. First it was Kill Blue. When it was clear that it was declining, they moved onto Kiyoshi. When Kiyoshi didn't show results, they moved onto Shinobi. Since Shinobi is showing some results, however subdued you want to make of it, they're being more aggressive with it. If Shinobi starts dropping, then they'll move onto Kinato or Under Doctor (idk lol).

Also, Hima-ten gets marketing, it's just that its fanbase is much quieter (Shinobi and Kiyoshi had much better Tsugi turnouts + they both did better with that whole Festa merch thing). It got a cover, its first year had plenty of good rankings and color pages, but it's fanbase is pretty much the same, no reason to believe that Hima-ten has some sort of potential yet (this was brought up before, but harem romcoms just don't see much growth these days).

And people say Shinobi can't be the next Kagurabachi, only a true successor can fight this much with Nue fans!

But this whole discussion is about how Shinobi gets promoted significantly more than similar selling series. Basically, if you say "it's a normal push" to get 5 Color/1 LCP, you're basically implying it's fine for it to get all these while Hima-ten got a single color page in the same timeframe. Maybe you didn't think of it like that, but there's a limited number of color pages, so if every other issue Shinobi gets a color, other series have less opportunities.

The thing is that the arguments here are exaggerated. It sounds like Shinobi is growing 10k every volume and Nue and Hima-ten lose 10k sales, when in fact, all 3 sell a little bit more or less every volume. It's not that big of a gap volume to volume.

The thing is, trends don't go on forever. Saito using Disco Stu logic is how non-sense like Kiyoshi axing two anime series happens. And this is not to say to not promote Shinobi, but don't basically throw the other series under the bus to do that. I don't think it's a good business move considering these series are very unlikely to leave/end anytime soon, so at least keep some basic support.

I don't think it ever got a PV and lack of color pages + consistent poor TOC do worry the japanese fanbase. I would actually love to know if this influences sales or something, but when I check japanese comments for Nue or Hima-ten, the fans are constantly scared of being axed. I'm not sure this kind of perception helps much and it would probably not be as much of an issue if he at least rotated the TOC bottom and color pages more.

And people say Shinobi can't be the next Kagurabachi, only a true successor can fight this much with Nue fans!
Its at least a more even fight now!

I know I've had my criticisms of Saito, but I don't think this Shinobi push is that bad? Sure it's a bit much, but when you compare it to when Kiyoshi, Kill Blue, and even Zumou got pushed in spite of their relatively low sales, Shinobi is actively showing results. It has a consistent growth trend every volume, and volume 5 even reappeared on Shoseki when volume 6 released. Like, if pushing Shinobi a lot makes them more money, why shouldn't they do it?

I also have a hard time believing that Nue, Hima-ten, and Kiyoshi would be showing similar results if they got the same push Shinobi got, Nue hasn't shown any meaningful audience growth since volume 4, which is odd considering volume 1 sold very well and was understocked, showing that Nue appeals very well to a particular audience, but has trouble breaking outside of that. Hima-ten also hasn't had stellar growth since volume 1, backlog has been lackluster, and what it sells now is just what volume one sold but frontloaded (it's why Shinobi and Hima's week one's aren't far apart but in the long run Shinobi sells more). It's not even like Hima-ten is even ignored, especially not in its first year where it got 1st place ToCs and regular color pages (and a cover) so I don't buy that Hima-ten is super ignored or anything, when it was pushed, it didn't grow. And I don't even know how Kiyoshi is getting grouped in these conversations when Jump is treating it extremely kindly when you consider how popular it is (I can accept Nue and Hima fans being mad about Shinobi, but I promise Kiyoshi fans that the Shinobi push is stealing nothing from Kiyoshi).

Meanwhile Shinobi has basically always grown, even before the big push, it has the best backlog and growth out of Hima-ten and Kiyoshi. Maybe Hima-ten and Nue have some sort of potential I'm not seeing, but considering how when you compare their push and performances in their first year, it's not like Shinobi was treated much better in its first year than Hima or Nue, yet it showed consistent growth. Also, regarding the merch sales, it's not like they're suddenly going to go up if Nue starts getting better rankings, it's clear that Nue's audience, while devoted, is outside of the magazine's usual demographics, the merch would still sell even if Nue got transferred to Plus.

This pretty much leads to a simple conclusion, pushing Shinobi makes them more money. Shueisha is a company. While I'm sure Nue and Hima-ten are profitable in their own rights, I don't think a traditional magazine push would make any more money than they do now. Sure, I may be biased, as a Shinobi fan who plans on buying volume 1 when it comes out in English, but I also like Nue! I got miffed when it didn't get the cover and locking it to the bottom 5 is dumb! But it's not abnormal in the history of Jump itself, plenty of very high sellers never got meaningful attention in Jump and ranked low. P6 literally sold the same as Nue and got axed! Saito isn't uniquely bad for having his favorites and ignoring other series. I think a lot of his serializations are bland and uninteresting, but that's another issue.

Also, I think people underestimate how much of a machine Mitarashi is, on top of doing color pages every other chapter, the dude somehow finds the time to post animations on his twitter account, it's clear that the dude is very productive, even more so than some of the other duos.
Only other person who's seeing what I'm seeing. Other than Nue's weird treatment and Kagurabachi being done by health stuff it's a pretty standard color page distribution and it's favoring the duo groups.

Oh and Witch Watch deliberately turning it down outside of anniversary. This is perfectly reasonable, Shinobi is fine (it's not even bad jesus it's like bang average at worst) and it'll probably get a pretty decent popularity push with an anime (inevitable, just needs something midway decent and visible) so it's not like a real outlier. Even Hima-ten and Kiyoshi aren't either, but we'll see where we are. I can see this batch only keeping Kinato (sad!) but even if all 3 stay I still think all three of the other "dubious" manga that are running long term will be fine.

Also am I hearing Hokazono really pulled from Naruto to do what I hoped he'd do? Man loves Naruto so much it's crazy but this is amazingly played from him. Hope that leak is real haven't seen proper confirmation yet.

Honestly, my only take with this is I have OCD so I'm just someone who likes everything to be even and fair. It took me a while to get over the fact that One Piece gets like 4x more covers than the rest and that makes perfect sense lol

lol Some snarky comments going on which is missing the mark about the whole point of discussion which is really not X vs Y series but how really overpushed Shinobi in question is getting, i was going to say is getting as much pushed as Ichi but in reality Ichi color pages pushing have significantly slowed down since the 1st anniversary cover, so there you have :grin Even these 2 consecutive color pages, the fact that they're going to make one full illustration is like Saito saying "I wanted to give you a cover but it would be just way too much" lmao!

Like i said once in the past Shinobi fans, don't take this as a personal thing, is not about the manga quality (At least from me) is just a matter of being a really unbalanced amount of promotion and pushing compared to it's actual performance and how other similar series don't get nearly as much.

I know I've had my criticisms of Saito, but I don't think this Shinobi push is that bad? Man, feels like you're really trying to sell me the idea that Shinobi is this growing series that is showing a nice sales growth every volume and a shining potential to become something big in the future and that's why is getting such abnormal number of color pages and paired with the flagships in promotion and etc, but in reality it hasn't even grow a actual 10k monthly from vol 1 to 6 (in physical), so the manga growth is something really just minimal in comparison, which is the whole center of the discussion about how much is getting pushed, and digital isn't anything special either, so...

And:

"This pretty much leads to a simple conclusion, pushing Shinobi makes them more money"

I'm having a really hard time to believe Shinobi Undercover as a series and its volumes sales is giving Shueisha any relvant amount of money compared to other series in the magazine. Kiyoshi? sure, Hima-Ten? not really since they're pretty close to each other, but anything from Nue to above? Nah.

Is giving Shinobi dozen of color pages making Jump issues selling more copies than the usual? is Shueisha profiting any special amount of money from Shinobi volume sales? Is Shinobi as a IP getting any merchandise that is generating a good amount of money? Well, i'm not aware of anything special going on, so...

Separate from all of this, I feel like I’m pretty equal on my feelings towards Kiyoshi/Hima/Shinobi, in that I think they’re all pretty decent with occasional high spots and occasional dips. A bit more dramatic with Hima-ten, since the good comfort chapters are especially nice and the obligatory Kanna “showing her business” moments and similar are especially displeasing, so it balances out to the same average.

For me the good comfort chapters are nice but the Hima focused ones are boring, Honoka chapters are great while Kanna "showing her business" are the peak of the series :grin

Lets compare first year of their serialization color page before first year of serialization Color spread
Himaten: 8 Color Pages
Shinobi: 8 Color pages
Kiyoshi: 8 Color Pages

Sales Change(Physical) (Monthly, so could be inaccurate)
Himaten Sales Chart change from Vol 1 --> Vol 6
15.6k --> 15.5k

Shinobi Sales Chart change from Vol 1 --> Vol 6
16.7k ---> 21.1k

Kiyoshi Sales Chart change from Vol 1 --> Vol 6
12.4k ---> 13k

Shinobi showed results with its push and within their results you can see it
If we were to look at digital it'd be different a little but it'd be hard to say exactly whats happening. Shinobi I was watching its amazon reviews be lower in the start and starting with the Fort Port arc its started to change to be much bigger, Himaten has had the biggest digital presence, but has been just pretty consistant in its showing. Kiyoshi I just imagine hits a different demographic that jump wants. However shinobi has the biggest axis for growth from recieving color pages and the artist writer duo is able to withstand this far better than the other two.

As for Nue it's like Himaten, however it had a bigger Digital and Physical presence. However, over time it has fallen, but again, Kota Kawae is a single person and I don't believe Nue exorcist is going to be getting crazy growth from being front and center if all those light novel author shoutouts didn't do enough.

I don't know, i feel like you guys are trying to rationalize too much why Shinobi is getting so overpushed by showing its incredible 5k ~ 10k growth in the span of 1 year & half but in the end it just circles back to "Yeah Shinobi is really getting overpushed" lol

I might be completely misremembering (sorry if I am) but doesn't Kawae have a dedicated colorist?

Supposedly some color pages are outsourced, but some color pages looks pretty much like how he does colors.

I've never argued that it doesn't get overpushed, Saito clearly has a strong bias for it (him posing with its cover during Jump Festa was hilarious), my problem always has been with people asking "why does it get pushed over [insert series with more sales here]". We know how much Jump values growth over cold sales numbers and in whatever comparison people try to make with other series, Shinobi is always the only one with an upwards trend, small as it may be.

I think being a duo is also a factor, since nowadays so many solo authors seem to die a horrible death whenever they get asked to make a color page, but I don't think it's a very determinant factor since Kawae has a colorist and yet doesn't get disproportionately more work (hence why I asked). Saito bias is a much bigger factor, but not enough to ignore Shinobi's growth, in my opinion.

Just so nobody thinks I'm a total Shinobi stan, I will say this: I think the value of consecutive color pages has been cheapened by it. They used to feel significant, series got them to celebrate something happening. I don't know how many it's gotten so far but Shinobi seems to get consecutive color pages for...existing? I guess?
