I thought you were exaggerating Shinuki but no, Western manga Twitter really hates Kinato now

I think it's absolutely overblown. People are acting like he healed her of homosexuality with his magic. It was very apparent she just always saw herself as someone who needed to save people, so when someone "saved" her it made her rethink.

Obviously the West doesn't decide what lives but if this somehow affects its longevity, might go down as one of the stupidest reasons a series lost an audience after Psych House's stealing thing

It's not misogynistic or homophobic or whatever, I just think taking the traits that made her unique and reducing them to MC's love interest is boring, if anything, it's funnier if she suddenly saw Kinato as a princess and started coddling him.
I also think this would have been a more interesting direction, however I don't think her feelings for Kinato are a problem

Yeah, that Kinato's Magic chapter was a yellow flag for me.

My reaction isn't as strong as some people on Twitter but I think there's enough in the chapter to make sense why it could be offensive and icky and not just an overreaction, so I'm not going to diminish those who feel shitty about this development. Personally, I mainly found it quite lame that Kinato fixed her of her "delusions" and now she's re-positioning herself as a princess rather than a knight. That's boring. It'll be a case where time will tell if Kaminagi's character remains interesting or not but I think what we had set up was funnier and had more potential than this early shift for her. So for now it does leave a sour taste and is going to have me clinging onto that 'what if' scenario of this development not happening two chapters after her initial archetype was introduced. Definitely my least favourite chapter of the series, didn't actually laugh once it was clear where this was going and the vibe was throughly ruined.

Honestly, kind of a forgettable issue? My top 4 are my usual favourites since nothing else stood out. Akane-banashi kicks off this arc by showing the power of Issho on the page, and also his impact to those around him. Undecided whether I want to see Akane succeed in this arc to fail but get just that bit closer. Ichi the Witch had a really gratifying emotional close and an excellent Desscaras moment, love. Kagurabachi going for the flashback between the two parts is perfect timing. I predicted in the first few chapters that we'd get a section with someone betraying the organisation and then an arc on the war - expected, but what we want to see. Part of me is a little worried in case fleshing out the details softens the narrative weight and implications that have been alluded to with everything surrounding the island and the killing of its people, but I obviously want to know more than I worry it disappoints. And One Piece had some nice individual moments even if the chapter wasn't that vital in the grand scheme of the arc.

Everything else was kind of a toss-up between being just good and being just fine, so the fifth spot for my votes could have gone to quite a few but this continued build up to the one month countdown in Hima-Ten! puts it a hair above the rest. And no Kanna once again! Yoohoo.

I will say that this week's Nue's Exorcist chapter wasn't that good for me but the art definitely was impressive, credit where it's due.

Gonron Egg having several panels now in the past few weeks where it's literally just speed lines is the truest sign of a mangaka giving up. Just so bad, man. Everything it's doing feels off but I'm kind of invested to see how it all folds together in this rushed, messy, clunk, barely drawn conclusion.

Really wouldn't mind another batch coming very soon with Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo ending next week and likely Gonron Egg and The Mage Next Door wrapping up soon. Tag Hunter x Hunter along with the new serialisations and I'll be content, Saito.

Top 5 of Issue #14:
1. Akane-banashi
2. Ichi the Witch
3. Kagurabachi
4. One Piece
5. Hima-Ten!
Not great, just good:
6. WITCH WATCH
7. Me & Roboco
8. Blue Box
9. Someone Hertz
10. Shinobi Undercover

Just fine:
11. Under Doctor
12. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo
13. Kinato’s Magic
14. The Mage Next Door
15. Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits
16. Alien Headbutt
17. Nue's Exorcist

Just not:
18. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
19. Gonron Egg

Did you notice that RuriDragon was originally scheduled to return this week, but it has been delayed to next Sunday instead?

1. Ichi the Witch: The series with the highest momentum keeps riding on it like a boss. We had the final words (did the prophet predict this outcome?), the despair, the betrayal, and the glorious comeback that ties the two battle scenarios together again, all in the same chapter. This has to be a blast in volume format, not to speak of the anime.
2. Akane-banashi: The stage is set for a great two-days of fun! I like that the God of Death challenge isn't even the main event, and that they have to fight for attention with an audience that is not interested in them. I also fear that, since Akane is so pumped up, something will go wrong for her.
3. One Piece: A huge mythical dragon is always a good choice for generating some cool manga hype. Dude is so powerful that even literal nightmares run away from him. Also, one of the bad guys is down for good, the arc is starting to move into its resolution.
4. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo: It's a simplistic "everybody lives" resolution, but it still worked for what we have seen of the aftermath so far. Dabura went against the right enemy, and got a nice epilogue. There was even room for yet another cameo, probably the last of the series but who knows? We will know more next week!
5. Witch Watch: They are reaching all the goals without actually fighting (or getting spotted, in most cases). I don't know how long it will last, but it is a nice way to subvert the expectations and I am all for it.
6. Nue's Exorcist: Damnit, he had extra lives. This was an exciting, Bleach-y battle only chapter, the kind Kawae does better when he wants to make a good impression with me specifically. Cool techniques, hopes shattered, glimpse of a new hope, astral plane... you can't be more Jump than this.
7. Kagurabachi: Only in the final splash page it was clear to me that this was a flashback chapter all along. Good timing, it is better getting to know these informations before moving on.
8. Hima-Ten!: This is getting spicy. Kanae really deserved a chapter like this, where her feelings are brought up again and we don't forget that she is still playing the game with an advantage. The promise she makes at the end is a great setup for whatever will go down one month for now. Honmope!
9. Alien Headbutt: In my opinion, the chapter was good, it was all about defeating an overpowered enemy with wrestling tricks. It shows a better use of human (?) body science than Under Doctor, correct or not, and most importantly it generates testosterone hype so who cares about realism.
10. The Mage next door: Of course it is speedrunning, but I still want to say that the first very serious chapter in this Gintama-wannabe series was pretty much nailed. The backstory was nothing jawdropping, but Osoegawa going out of character with that straight face put some needed motivation into him. The first ecnounter with the main villain may even come out as a loss.
11. Under Doctor: Once again, full of words more than it was necessary, but the story told in this chapter was heartwarming enough to let it pass. This series has strenghts and weaknesses, it neends to understand what both are and work on them before it's too late.
12. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: Somehow the battle has become interesting even if Hitsugi was expected to have no chance before. I liked that Kiyoshi decided to trust him so he can have his shot at a win without interference.
13. Blue Box: I didn't really get if the tournament ended and if Taiki stopped at the semifinals or at the final, but it's sad that it ended offscreen. I suppose the only purpose was to show the match between best friends, as it is not a spokon at heart. Seeing Taiki becoming a spokon celebrity was nice though.
14. Me and Roboco: Rare appearance of Motsuo's dad, and I am down with it. I am not into Youtube channels, but I can imagine those produced here to actually gather a following. He should have uploaded them anyway.
15. Gonron Egg: Well the final twist was something. I can't put the chapter at last place as always after that. All the pages before it though were axe-rushing, last rank worthy.
16. Kinato's Magic: First underperforming chapter for me. All that Knight/Princess stuff was clearly aiming at a demographic that isn't mine, so I couldn't enjoy that. The new members have yet to prove their worth, but this guild is starting to give off vibes of Black Clover's Black Bulls, that had a more charismatic leader though (and a better name).
17. Shinobi Undercover: With this move, Hibari got robbed of her chance to legitimately defeat an opponent like her teammates did. What a stinker! The rest didn't impress me at all.
18. Someone Hertz: And back to awkward dates it is. I always read Jump in rigorous ToC order, so having this always at the beginning of my reading session can be mood killing at times. Who cares about them eating at a restaurant? "Wow, this restaurant is run by a child...why?" "Could go worse, look at that ramen shop over there run by talking cats".
19. Hero Girl and Demon Lord call it quits: Nah, not my jam. This reeks of cliches and uninspired storytelling, so it's not catching my interest at all. The joke about where do the liquids drank by Subspace go was a little funny at least.

Nah, they're praising the chapter in the Forums and JP Twitter, the outrage it's just here in the west like always.

I mean even if is a gag is kind offensive in some way, because it feels like “she was only “into” girls because he never met a real man”, and not only because of the book she loved… even if it wasn’t the authors intent it kind felt like that to me

Idk man, I never got that interpretation from that at all. From the jump it was established she always was obsessed with the Princess and Knight dynamic from the book. She's probably met lots of strong people but Kinato is the first person to ever fit the knight archetype in her eyes.

Idk how the author will work with it but I think it could be funny if its a dynamic where she keeps falling for different cast members but then something about them turns her off and she moves to a new one. Like, Kinato gets his defeated next arc and she's like "a true knight doesn't lose" and loses all interest in him.

Would I prefer a straight up, strong female lead? Sure. But the people who are sitting here calling it misogynistic or homophobic I feel like are making a mountain out of a molehill. It's a gag at best. Its not like the MC has a harem forming around him yet so I personally think its most something people should be cautious about instead of the extreme remarks people are already putting on Amemiya (not saying you specifically btw just in general)

But that's not the message, she wasn't into women or men, she was into the concept of Knights and Princess from her favorite book series, she didn't saw herself as a Knight because she saw herself as a man or something, she's not even turning into someone submissive, she still pretty much assertive while Kinato is the one more "submissive" in nature just getting along with her freaky stuff kkkk

This (not exactly you) feels like reading too much into silly shenanigan stuff from a light shounen manga as if the author has any agenda behind it lol and it's not like it's even going to be relevant since it's not a romance manga but a battle shounen.

Nah, the thing that make her look at Kinato as a Knight wasn't power but his heroic and honored attitude, it's like the flashback where she explains that she has always been lonely because many groups tried to follow her in adventures but abandoned her once they get in big danger while Kinato being just a "weak low level" adventurer in her eyes didn't abandon her at any moment and even healed her, so i think the ship has pretty much sailed, or at least a permanent interest since there's Linae which clearly loves Kinato.

I also just feel like in general people are being way too judgy on Shonen Jump manga. Like, last week UD was abelist. This week Kinato is misogynistic /homophobic.

And its certainly not the first time. MHA was homophobic for killing off Magna, for not making Himiko directly state she loves Uraraka, for not getting Deku and Bakugo together.

It's fine to want more progressive themes in your manga, I'm all for it. But Shonen Jump is not the place for it. The most progressive we've gotten is probably MHA which again, got a lot of comments about Horikoshi being a homophobe. If Kumangai was a lesbian? Awesome. I'd love it. The fact that she's not doesn't make me not want to read the series because: 1) It never felt that she was outright stated as one; 2) I wouldn't be reading Kinato for her. Hell, I'd read it more for Linae than her.

I'm choosing to look at this as a positive thing (outside of this forum at least) cause from what I've seen 75% of the people who are upset are people who were only into it for the potential Yuri. Which again, would love more LGBT+ action manga, but there are other places doing that rn than Shonen Jump. Hopefully, this will clean sweep the "tourists" and actually leave critical issues for the series in the long-run (cause its still by no means perfect)

I have some thoughts about the Kinato thing, but I want to call this out first.

Can we please stop trying to imply that the stealing "controversy" thing ever actually mattered for Psych House. Psych House didn't lose an audience for it because it never had one to begin with. No one cared about it after chapter 2 dropped and the Jump+ views, amount of comments it got on JP social media and forums, video PV views, vomic views, and sales showed no one read chapter 1 to begin with. The stealing "controversy" is essentially just something you can point to show that the people who did bother talking about Psych House really had nothing to talk about.

Yeah, I don't think this is really about being progressive as a whole, for many is just shippers wanting their personal fantasy to become reality in shounen mangas, which obviously there's nothing wrong about, the problem is that many don't know how to separate their personal fantasy from the real work.

Now we just need racist Alien Headbutt for the triple!
It's already clearly inspired by Terra Formars, just need to get a bit more inspired by it with some new alien and surely it will be called a racist manga :grin

My wording was bad but never actually thought it would survive if that didn't happen but you can't disagree that the only convos happening around your manga by Ch. 2 are negative talks is a good thing

Obviously it wasn't what "killed" the manga but all the controversy just ruined the manga reputation even more specially when it was just the first chapter.

Lots of exaggeration about so many things. But the first and most important question is: why are we bringing up random twitter arguments here? lol

It was irrelevant.

Well, because we're discussing western reactions for Kinato's chapter, despite being completely useless to the actual reception in Japan, it still reactions.
