Odd stuff:
- The website says Roku's House of Oddities, but the thumbnail (used in adds) has The Odd House of Roku on it. Can't you pick one? Or maybe go for The House of Six Oddities, since apparently Roku isn't even a thing.
- Dude, your friends are obviously trying to tell you something. Go home.
- The Beast with No Name has a name? Sounds fancy, too... oh, it's a legend.
Beast of Gévaudan - Wikipedia
- Vampire guy is quite easily pleased.
- Wait, so he didn't die five times? Talk about false advertising.
- Vampire guy is reminding me A LOT of the Demon Lord right now (p32).
- Well, the place is big enough, at least. Imagine if he was living in a one-room apartment.
- Dude, calm down. She's totally into that manga. She probably thinks you have great taste.
- Mask guy is surprisingly considerate. Nice kitty apron.
- He's really hung up on that dog.
- She doesn't know Dragon Ball? How sheltered was she?
- Doll Girl also seems rather innocent for something called The Massacre Marionette (thankfully).
- And there's the long term goal. You're a detective now, Akari.

All in all, I rather liked it. It's not the most original and the humor is hit and miss, but it gave us a nice, easy to understand set-up story that works as a basis for the rest of the series. I also like our new demon lord

Now we'll have to wait and see if they actually do something with the mystery, or if it's just gonna be random frathouse shenanigans.

OP: Nevermind, the fight wasn't over at all.

KGB: That's an awful way to start a negotiation. Talk about overconfidence. Throwing away all goodwill when you don't even know what the enemy is capable of is an insane gamble. Reminds me of a certain someone who's very good at starting wars but not ending them.

Shinobi: ... Well, at least someone is having fun. That's probably gonna change when he realises how much he underestimated his enemy though.

Dr: So they did know each other, but not like I was thinking. Pretty decent fight. It's kinda funny he needs that thing though, I would've thought he could do it on touch. Why can English not decide how to pronounce the [ou]

Alien: I almost feel sorry for the bird, its tactics would've been 100% effective against any normal human. Those new designs are... surprising.

Hero: What an omnious title. The chapter itself was rather anticlimatic, but I was expecting that. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised they didn't end the series right there, it would've been a decent conclusion.

Kiyoshi: Lol! Now they're arguing who's got the bigger one.

Mage: Well, at least there was some kind of ending. But I don't understand why these series speedrun the final arc only to leave things unfinished anyway.

Akane: Wasn't expecting that scrawly thing. I wonder how that would be done in sound?

BB: That was a pretty nice chapter. Glad the kid found him some challengers after all.

Nue: So he's just another person now? Okay then. And he has turned into a stubborn dad. Who wants his daughter to be part of a harem. Cool, it's not like I was expecting sanity from this manga anyway.

Himaten: "Oh em gee"? We've really gone full circle with that one, haven't we?

Ichi: So these are magikeepers? Can't say I like them much, especially the tall one. I didn't like the reaction of the team either.

Kinato: Their vetting process needs to be more strict. That goes for both the council and the guild. Hiring kids who will gamble their life at the first not-even-desperate-yet confrontation is not a good thing.

...how on earth a normal jp news site got banned, but oh well
It's an article about how "kids under 20 nowaday are losing interest in manga" with a sale graph below:

Orange: Tankoubon
Yellow: Manga magazine
Green: Digital

yeah I kinda messed up the color in previous post because the color looked different in my phone
Jump still dominated for boys tho, according to the survey, but it seems there is a difference between "Weekly Shonen Jump" and "Jump"?
It's not banned, you just get a notice saying they chose to cease their activities in this region.

And yeah, Weekly Shonen Jump is just one magazine, whereas Jump is basically an entire empire.
Jump (magazine line) - Wikipedia

Lots of manga will do homage panels or scenes though. At least it's not Black Clover level of lifting. Hell, that new series from WSM Ura Tokyo has lifted several scenes/elements from Hunter x Hunter and I haven't seen any complaints about that.
A homage is fine as long as the manga still feels like it's own thing overall, which both Kinato and Ura Tokyo do, despite both wearing their influences on their sleeves.
The problem isn't the panels, it's that Kinato as a character is becoming too much like Deku. Same basic appearance, both 'weak' from birth but powerful after all, timid and polite, and now also overly self-sacrificing.

You can pay homage to a character, but you can't copy it. (Not saying that happened here, but, I mean... I have a harder time finding differences between the two than similarities.)

I guess, but is Perceval from SDS:4KA not just Goku? Is Yumene Connect as a series not just To Love Ru? I don't disagree that series and their characters should try their best to stand out on their own, but I still think this sort of thing feels more like homage than plagiarism.
I mentioned Ura Tokyo earlier as well, because they introduced a character with white hair from a family of assassins who decides to become best friends with the MC in nearly the exact same way as Killua x Gon. Like, this stuff is common in shonen manga.

Kinato's different to Deku in that he's a lot blander.

Deku right from the start despite having a simple design had a couple personality quirks to help him stand out as the MC (being a massive hero nerd and All Might fanboy, crying all the time, and going into creepy murmur mode when he's thinking hard). Kinato's not really got anything, and his power so far has just been a general power up and then occasional oneshot attacks.

The rest of the cast is pretty good so Kinato himself being so dull is a clear weakpoint of the series (Otr had a similar issue). He's kinda timid and that's about it.

I haven't read those other series, so I can't say.

And I wasn't calling it plagiarism (this kind of character is a dime a dozen, I know), I was just saying the problem is more with the character itself than with those few copied panels. Paying homage to other manga is fine, but your character still needs to stand on its own, and right now, Kinato doesn't feel very stable yet. It doesn't help that this particular behaviour felt kinda OOC because he went from being a pretty cautious guy (who knew he was a supporting character and was fine with that) to a wild gambler who wants to risk it all for the fight in an instant, for basically no reason (because the town was being destroyed? It's just bricks. It's not even his hometown. His friends are all fine, and so are the villagers. The situation isn't dire). Are they trying to paint him as the kind of character who loses all reason as soon as he feels cornered? That could be interesting, but then that needs to be established, and it wasn't.

So yeah, when your character already kind of looks/feels like a rip-off of another character, and then suddenly he starts acting like that other character in a way that hurts his own characterisation... that's not good, and people are going to complain. Homages are fine, but not when they undercut your character's individuality. Especially when that individuality is already one of the weaker points of the character to begin with.

Wow, this week Nue chapter tweet reached 10k likes in less than 24 hours!

Machida obliterated the record set by Natsuki on chapter 115 with 6.2k likes, i think this is maybe the most liked Nue tweet from the account? :hee
Following @Dongus' 1st Law, the anime just got postponed at least another 30 years.

Btw, Machida tweet just surpassed the tweet announcing that Nue won 1st place in the AnimeJapan voting and now is the most liked tweet of Nue account! :hee

Anyway, Roku reception seems to be pretty positive everywhere online in the jp side, of course there are negative comments but mostly is at worst just saying they didn't find very funny, Matome by default has the less positive comments but the worst you will find is just saying it wasn't very funny, so overall the reception is pretty positive in general, probably the best of 2026 so far alongside Under Doctor ch1 but for me is a bit tricky because it's Agravity Boys author which was highly praised online and still just survived 50 chapters and sold 10k ~ 12k at best, so you never know, but i do feel like the series has definitely chances to survive.

I would agree on the personality (although I don't like Deku's personality especially at the beginning of MHA, he is more varied) but I don't agree on the powerset difference. In the long-run Deku's movesets got to be quite unique but truly until the Stain arc it was pretty much just powerful punch and finger flicks

Weekly Shoseki Top 500 (3/30/26 - 4/5/26)
15. Akane-banashi #21
40. Nue's Exorcist #14

Jesus, week so terrible for Jump that even Harukaze Mound didn't chart, and i hope Oricon is higher for Nue because these Shoseki estimates are low too :feelsbadman

I disagree that deku had a simple design. The way hori colored his green hair and his red shoes makes him stand out despite the type of character deku is.

Young Japanese don't read manga anymore, and adults, who read manga, have read a lot of stuff already, so everything seems bland to them, which might explain why a lot of titles seem just "ok".

Poor mangaka. And most of them in Jump are young, meaning that they don't have much experience in life, meaning they didn't have a lot of experience with other people/places/things that could nurture/nourish their writing.... So it usually takes them 5 to 10 years to write something "good"...

80-90% of deperdition, both in human ressources and effort/money.

This is a SOOOO inneficient system... Worse than war. It's more like a gambling system than a logical system.

Bah, we get geniuses/veterans from time to time to keep jump afloat, so...

:emocat

(just wanted to write this, please ignore me :hee)

I live in Japan and young people definitely read manga.

They just usually read it on their phones, rather than physical magazines or volumes.

Yeah, had a feeling that was the case, mostly given the amount of folks using mangaplus, but one cannot deny the feeling of having a physical version. At least that is my personal opinion. Value of ownership is kinda strong, no offense.

Which is the reason for that strong as hell digital sales, while physical kept declining, especially magazine

Roku is... Alright, I guess.

I really like how Nue ended this arc, definitely more compared to how sudden the shift from the end of Suzaku to Natsuki was.

You didn't get the memo on Japanese Twitter with all the "data says that young people don't read manga anymore". Big fuss.

Then, we got "in fact, they read manga, but not the ES pupils and JHS/HS students"

And then, "Yes, they read digital manga"

And now it's "they read, but only free content". Or "my niece reads manga" Or "I work at an after school club, and they read manga we give them"

I'm waiting for the next cliffhanger, it's so exciting... :derp

Very very tangentially related to the thread topic but the Ponsuka anime finally aired today and there was a tiny reference to Shudan in there, which I thought was cute.

I really hope more of Yokota's stuff gets animated eventually.

I have never seen so few Jump series in the Shoseki top 500.
This reinforces my feeling about how bad this current Jump truly is. Flop after flop after flop after flop. I do believe that a lot of it has to do with our current societies lack of attention span and the shifting interests of their (jump) current target demographic.
