WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP THREAD RULES​

#7. Refrain from self advertising or advertising Youtubers videos in the comments.
#8. Constant fanart posts just for the sake of praising a favorite series is prohibited, this rule doesn't apply for official art by Jump artists posted on social media, they're fine to post.
#9. Don't discuss or hype chapter spoilers before Sunday release, only comment if is related to a series surviving status and do it only inside the spoiler tag.
#10. Regarding rule #9, an exception will be made for when we have new series, in this case, spoilers will be allowed only for the first 3 chapters of a new series for the users who are interested in knowing informations and details about the new series, these spoilers will obviously be kept under tags to protect anyone that doesn't want to be spoiled, so don't worry about it.

Sometimes I wonder if Saito doesn't actually want any mid tier series in the magazine and cries because Shinobi can't get a huge boost despite getting treated like a pillar.

I still have the (half serious) headcanon that he purposely sabotoged Kaedegami due to being angry his precious Otr wouldn't catch on.

Anyway regarding the whole Sorachi thing and comparing it to Kishimoto is a different story and matter. But even with Kishimoto, that story with Samurai 8 was more of a problem with all major parties to blame in both Kishimoto and Okubo, and their editor Taguchi. Heck even higher editorial like Nakano to publish it than send it back to double check if something is wrong (look I shouldn’t fully blame him, but since he is the EiC he should have spotted some of these issues in the storyboards when it was talked about being serialized, as well as the arrogance in thinking it will sell so quickly).

Every generation has their top artists of talent and Jump is no different. In this case since we are talking about legendary vets that made hits for the magazine there are bound to be veterans who have made duds until they come up with another hit or age out of the magazine. And while we talk about some artists that are still present in the magazine that debuted since the late 1980’s and 1990’s up to some 2010’s artists, we will see an end of a generation and the beginning of a new one. That’s how it was when Jump entered its first dark age and artists up till now to even before that, people like Yudetamago, Akira Miyashita, Masami Kurumada, Tetsuro Hara, Bronson, Tsukasa Hojo, Koji Maki, Hiroshi Motomiya, Shinji Imaizumi, Masaya Tokuhiro, ect. A majority if not all of these artists left Jump and never returned due to all of the stuff I just said as well as other reasons that cannot be explained. Pretty soon, it will happen with our current artists, people like Tite Kubo, Masashi Kishimoto, Nobuhiro Watsuki, Yusei Matsui, Kenta Shinohara, Kentaro Yabuki, even Sorachi too, there will be or a time will come when these authors won’t write in Weekly Jump anymore or in other publications that are Shueisha adjacent or not. But in the case of Weekly Jump, so far Saito hasn’t put to much focus on bringing back many veterans so far (successful or not), but what’s most important is the focus on new talent and seeing potential in artists that have failed and help them try again.

Alien Headbutt somehow being the highest ranked new series? (Still low tho + no color page).
I don't know why Saito is ranking stuff like this, but I'm glad my fave is not dead last yet lol.

Guys, we literally have no cushion series from now, only successful veterans, it's not like it's a surprise at all that the new series will get shoved to the bottom, ToC is going to get nasty for a while, yeah obviously seeing Under Doctor and specially Kinato that low really sucks but i was already prepared for that, what is left is to see if the 3 will just get permanently stuck there or at least keep alternating between lower and higher placements...

Anyway tho I am baffled by that Under Doctor color page if it immediately plummeted to the bottom 3. You'd assume it and Alien's placements would be swapped. And yeah I gotta echo the take that it is insane that none of these series caught on at all. It really puzzles me that like somehow Kiyoshi has lived and series like these just insta flop.

Yeah something is going wrong if every single batch is going straight to the bottom. It used to be that Jump could get at least one hit every other batch but the last two years, it has been all bottom slumming with the exception of Someone Hertz.

I don't know what the solution for this is but its not a good sign that when Jump is in the weakest position they've been in several decades, all their new series either aren't clicking or being given the chance to click. I was thinking they'd have a nice set of series a few years from now when OP is in its final arc but it's not looking good right now

In the past tho we've seen stuff like Elusam (rip), Nue, Kill Blue (rip), Himaten, Kiyoshi, Roboco, and sometimes Akane occupy that bottom 5 tho. Usually they cushion the newer series with those veterans.

I just finished typing a long comment regarding next gen writers, and the ToC comes out with this new batch dropping like flies? Don’t get me wrong, glad to see the ToC but I’m shocked.

Not saying he's going to fail but I absolutely see a future where Sorachi gets axed despite selling more than like Under Doctor Volume 1, but the TOC is bad so they axe the series.

Cause usually every year we need the next example of "Jump doesn't know what they're doing" from Western audiences who only look at sales numbers

Not even about sales numbers. Western fans will always complain whenever series they hype get cancelled, sales & TOC be damned. And they gonna be racist towards the Japanese for "shitty taste" on top of it.

I feel like Kishi's failure is why they no longer hyping up returning hit veteran in advance. There was not much fanfare about Gege returning except a one short few seconds video released ON release day.

With Samurai 8, they made it seem like the second coming of Christ months in advance. And the overprinting. The stacks of unsold Samurai 8 books are just embarassing. There was even a joke that they should have bundled Samurai 8 with Kimetsu no Yaiba lol.

All this time waiting for the ToC only to get Under Doctor and Kinato's Magic in the bottom 6, why Saito???

The only positive thing for me in this ToC is finally seeing Nue color page properly placed far away from the bottom even if still the 3rd one lol

Ahh and so much for "Kiyoshi is in danger" in the jp forums, it just skyrocketed to freaking 4th place lmao!

Well Gege was a short term serialization and as a sequel to his hit series as well. It didn't need much promotion to sell itself. Modulo is more comparable to that Scarlet Spring Naruto manga that Kishi wrote a year after Naruto ended. I'm sure if Gege was returning with a new original series with the goal for it to be a long running title, he would have gotten a bigger push... but probably not as big as Kishimoto. I do think they learned some lesson there
