A bit late, but honestly, Mage Next Door was the worst series of 2025. I will list every series to come out of the year and show what they did better

Embers: Better art, some interesting metaphors, teacher was cool.
Star of Beethoven: Some of the introspection and paneling was nice, Beethoven himself was pretty cool.
Nice Prison: Unironically better plot and setting, some decent gags.
Otr of the Flame: Better art
Harukaze Mound: Better art, actual passion towards the subject matter
Kaedegami: Significantly better characters and relationships, also better comedy. Better art obviously.
Ekiden Bros: Started worse but significantly improved over its run in art and storytelling which I respected.
Ping Pong Peril: Much better concept with better execution.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo: Actually pretty good
Someone Hertz: Actually pretty good
Gonron Egg: Only series with an argument of being worse, but some of the concepts were ok. I felt pity towards the author, more than I felt for Mage
Hero Girl and Demon Lord: Better characters and gags.

I don't think Mage Next Door ever elicited a single emotion in me, positive or negative. Author is going to need to significantly improve if he wants to be successful in any magazine.

The way some of you force a hate with this series as if is supposed to be one of the worst things ever when is just a harmless magic & comedy series is starting to get actually funny lol

Is totally okay to not like the series but the way some talk about it you would think the series is something offensive or unbelievably bad kkkk

To the KB and Saito thing, regardless of the quality of the manga at that point, I think it is just bad business to not keep the manga running until the anime starts airing to see what it does for the popularity. And even if Fujimaki had the idea to end it, I'm sure he could've been pursuaded to keep going until then.

It's not even hate lol it's just apathy. There's a reason why it had the second worst debut on Shoseki for 2025, only above Nice Prison. Other series actually had charm points for 1-4K people to get attached to, Mage Next Door just didn't. I'd rather it be harmful than harmless.

Change Harukaze with Beethoven and it's exactly the same ranking as mine. Their sports series just do nothing for me usually these days, they're too simple and I would rather have more insane ones like Ping Pong, but it didn't sell as well, so eh.

--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I'm not even going to bother with Drawn to the Fire ch 1.

That oneshot is not that perfect to the point the author should stick to it completely.

After Killblue ended, we had Nice Prison and OTr, which flopped. But our Someone Rertz and Jujutsu Kaisen models, which were a success, Someone Rertz is still published and is more popular than Killblue, so it wasn't such a big loss.

Unbelievable, just unbelievable, Kill Blue is actually getting a decent boost on Amazon rankings a day after the episode aired:

(Not trying to start fights, just trying to understand) I don't get the hype and love people had with kadegami. Otr felt far grander and a bigger swing than just about everything on that list aside from Modulo, Hertz, and maybe PPP and should get that love whereas kadegami was a battle shonen with a weakness at battles and otherwise generic. Otr had good battles and a cool world; just hamstrung itself with a weak MC and shoehorning a training arc at the start. Hopefully, the lessons from Otr and Red Hood will lead Horikoshi's successor to follow his footsteps and the third time will be the charm.
