Really liked the new series as a one shot, still really liked it as a first chapter. Why’d they make the name “Drawn to the Fire” when they use flame (which is an actual phrase) in the manga lol. Will be rooting for it!

Maybe it was an author request? Or there's another series called Drawn to the Flame meaning they have use a different title.

I thought it was a good chapter, the dynamic between the main two was fun without feeling like a copy of a previous series (neither of them is a delinquent or a Sasuke) and MC having a clear distinct skill established with his incredible ball fakes is an important point too (since most the recent sports attempts have all had beginner MCs).

It's hard to be optimistic about a sports manga in modern Jump, but it' be nice if we could finally get one that makes it past ch 30.

Many characters have been called a deku clone but Kinato is literally just deku now.
I don't know what cause this abrupt change but he's now the exact same character. 1 to 1.
Who sign off on this?

Vol 12: #3,326 > #1,930
Vol 13: #2,412 > #1,406

Obs: I picked the rankings of all volumes on April 11 to keep tracking any growth

And it's a rushed manga, imagine if the series was still going on, getting the magazine cover, advertisement and etc, you can't hate Saito enough :pwned
At least wait for the rankings to hit 3 digits before celebrating lol

We're not expecting Kill Blue volumes to rank like Akane which all volumes are in the 3 digits but the Physical rankings going from 10k/11k to 3k/4k/5k in only 24h for a finished series that most though it wouldn't get anything from the anime is already something to celebrate, it shows that in the end the series could reach much more if it was still going on and with actual advertisement from Jump :super

advertisement from Jump Kill Blue was extensive, and at times the series surpassed Blue Box, Sakamoto Days, Kagurabachi, and One Piece.

Going from 10k to 4k on Amazon is almost certainly less than 100 copies though lol its not significant at all.

Like I get we hate Saito in here but come on. I loved Chojo but I doubt it’ll get any legitimate boost when its anime airs too.

The new series was pretty good.

Roku's house of oddities is just not well done imo. This shouldn't have been ch.2

My point is not if is moving 100 or 1000 copies, is about the fact it's actually moving and growing in a decent way on Amazon rankings despite being finished for months, it doesn't happen for every series, at all, Chojo for example had virtually no impact on Amazon rankings after being 3rd place on Tsugimanga despite all the celebration and stuff (and i did check at the time)

One-shot for Drawn to the Flame was good so I won't complain about the serialization debut chapter just being the one-shot, that around the defender's head pass/dribble move though lol, that and the 26 TOs in a single game. I do like my Spokon a bit more anchored in reality but this is the fun kinda exaggeration so I won't whine over it. I'll however note that I lowkey kinda prefer the way the faces are drawn in the one-shot, I went back to it afterwards and it's obviously a matter of taste but... eh. But overall I way prefer it over other modern Basketball manga like Kuroko. Solid 8.

Roku's chapter was bleh. I don't know enough about any of those characters for this type of chapter to be funny because the author really limits himself in what sort of jokes he can make and it feels like a re-heat of Chapter 1. The dog is still big, Johan's still a walking trope and the Showa highschool girl still reacts to things like one, she clearly's the only one that knows about videogames and TVs so it feels underwhelming that this isn't used at all. If all of those curses are from the past, discovering technology was always going to be a source for gags but in chapter 2? The doll girl doesn't even feel like a character. I like the author and it's obvious that he has 'it' but he's clearly playing it scared because he knows this is his last chance. Too formulaic for me. As of right now this is a tier below Moriking and Ichigoki in my book amidst this decade's comedies, and it's in the tier right above Nice Prison and Shugomaru. I'll go back and read it in Japanese during the week but this feels like a dud. This is a 3 or a 4.

I don't have a history of my thoughts regarding the other stuff in the magazine so I don't really think it makes much sense to share them especially since I'm pretty upset at some of the longer-running stuff in the magazine but two rapid-fire points, best Roboco chapter in weeks and Kinato's losing me.

edit: to make it clearer, it's just that I'd get really essay-y if I wanted to explain why I'm down on stuff like Witch Watch or Sakamoto that started way stronger for me, and I'll spare the forum of that lol.

Issue 20:

Natsu to Mushikago: Didn't read the oneshot, so this was all new to me. First impression is that I like the art for this -- never cared for how Embers and Harukaze Mound looked because, while technically good, they both lack in visual identity, this one has it and it's stylish enough that it makes a very regular debut just a better read in general.

So yes, the story didn't have any twist or turns you wouldn't be expect. This means it's already running basically on execution alone. Was it good? I would say it's decent. Both the heroine and the rival/friend really give the warm energy the story alludes to, helped a lot by their charming designs and strong expressions. The MC is the weakest link though, he's just not as pretty or even that interesting.

Story also feels like a mix of previous Jump basketball hits with the goal of impressing the girl coming from Slam Dunk, but the dynamic between the hidden passing prodigy MC and a scoring ally as the team's MVP reminds of Kuroko. Not bad, but I'm interested in seeing how it'll shape its own ideas. Framing everything as bugs chasing the light is at least appealing imagery. For now, leaning positive to it, even if I'm not sure readers want series like this.

1. Nue's Exorcist: I know we all have Jump brainrot here, so the natural reaction most people will have to Kasha's reveal this chapter will be "wow, they skipped a Hyo!", but properly reading about the legend of Kurikara, makes clear how this is an intentional move. The Dragon King in more known by his form as a sword than the actual being, everything about him is related to the invincible sword, so making him a tool for another Hyo is both a way of retelling the legend with its own twist adapted to a battle shonen format, something previously done to both Suzaku and Soranaki.

The chapter itself is fast paced as expected from Nue, but I'm used to it already. Likely an intro to what's to come, the new Kasha makes threats more believable again after our team was able to beat two Hyo and Gekka will get to job a bit because, as Kawae probably expected, readers were wondering how future enemies could beat two Nue contractors. lol

It's easy to praise Nue's art, but I don't think enough credit is given to how interesting the presentation is to the monster and supernatural aspects of it. Kasha using a bunch of bodies as stairs, them needing to rip off their whole body apart to summon the hollow weapon, the slain Dragon King. Demonic stuff isn't mere window dressing in Nue. It's a very strong start to the new arc.

2. Roku: It's still screaming axebait! But I enjoyed the vibes here more than in the first chapter as the simple setup of playing Wii with friends is a better way to showcase the cast's characteristics and how each reacts to a situation. Somehow... everyone is cute, but they don't sound or act samey. That's hard to do, so props to the author.

3. Himaten: The cat they picked together being what makes Iemori finally consider his feelings to Himari is peak romcom. It's something tangible that could guide his thoughts to the logical conclusion he denied for so long. I know some people get annoyed that he openly says/think he's attracted to all three girls to some extent, but it makes sense to this manga's instropective characters (and he's a teenager, so yeah).

4. Natsu to Mushikago: Did well enough for a vote.

5. Sakamoto Days: These last two fights are probably the first time I cared about the fights in this manga beyond "they look cool". Good job to the best couple in this story.

JK Hero: Not a vote because of how protocolar this ending was. Clearly the main thematic conclusion was last week and we just had a mini parade here to give good bye to our cast.

In general, a fun series. Nothing groundbreaking, but cute enough to be a fun weekly read. Maybe that was one of the main issues even, it's not explosive enough for its hero-maou gimmick, but it's also not chill enough to be a Someone Hertz. Can't say I mind it being stuck in the middle, but readers could find it not appealing.

I wouldn't mind seeing the author again, but they also need to improve their art. It's pretty and they have some nice scenes, but it's lacking consistency. Will read whatever they put out next though.

Kinato and Under Doctor somehow had the same exact chapter as well and undermined their concepts already. No wonder they both are together at the bottom. And I wish Ichi did more with its female characters before another dude festival.

Just remember guys... when you're shit talking Saito, this is the man you're being mean to :(
Me & Roboco's chapter also shouting out One Piece, Ichi the Witch, Sakamoto Days, Blue Box, and Someone Hertz as the series getting the top three in the magazine. Me thinks this is pretty close to a reality.

And friendly reminder for all those who still doubt it because it doesn't always align how you think it should (thanks to Saito's own incompetence):
Good thing I basically forgot the details of the one-shot because Drawn to the Fire really was a great first chapter. I do remember thinking this felt perfect for serialisation back when I did first read it so not shocked that it's 95% the same, with some improved character designs and expanding on the right moments. The banter between the two leads is the major winner here, and the fujobait signal are flashing hardcore. So so so easy to ship these two together if you want to. It takes minimal mental effort to connect the dots, so that has to count for something if we're being calculated in its chances. But yeah, I liked it all: the basketball, the build up to Mizuhara's return to the game and how he compliments Natsu's play style (and personality) so well. Good gives with this one. That's obviously failed before but maybe we'll finally (finally finally) get a new sports series in the magazine that isn't a flop? Probably not, but let's pretend it's possible!

Also, this was funnier than any joke from Roku's first two chapters:
Roku's House of Oddities remains annoyingly unfunny. This cast is just not dynamic enough to pull off the gags like Agravity Boys could. Just a limp gag title by someone who I thought would do much better than this. This is down there with the weakest of the Gagbowl of the early '20s, honestly.

On Nue's Exorcist - there was a part of me that wondered if it was going to start speeding up the pace and could we get two Hyo at once in the next conflict, but this was certainly another way to start that action and also reduce the numbers. I'm not saying that it's a major red flag but I also think it's not something to be completely ignored. A fair chunk of the laid out narrative still to go but with how we sped up through the set-up of the last arc I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes the norm now and enter some Toriko/Undead Unluck final arc territory.

Speaking of: not to rarebait the Shinobi Undercover hating Nue's Exorcist fans, but this week's Shinobi chapter was sooooo Nue's Exorcist coded to me. The way the gags were playing out, Yodaka's panic and 'I'm going to come to the rescue' mentality, and the almost chibi-ness in contrast to the intense action going on. I felt the tonal shift in a notable way this week, and funnily enough I think both were good/decent chapters as well.

Sakamoto Days went grim this with this fight wrapping up, appreciated the fade to black especially. Not sure I'm loving how this Kagurabachi flashback is playing out at present but I'm not hating it either, I just fear we're diluting the potentially strong initial messaging that we were getting. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi was better this time thanks to it channeling mid-series One Piece in the way it was panelled and how the fight was playing out, nice stuff. Under Doctor was just a lot of words and hitting, Kinato's Magic going full Deku feels extra uninspired and not hopeful for its near future, and Alien Headbutt remains whack. Not surprised or especially mad they're all in the bottom, actually.

Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits' final chapter felt kinda forced in how it brought everyone together again. I would have appreciated something focused on the two leads and achieving that full humanity again to make their relationship feel totally resolved. What we got was fine, but at least this was the best of its several contemporary flops. One demon lord series down, another replacing it next week - Sorachi, please rescue Jump!

Top 5 of Issue #20:
1. Akane-banashi
2. Drawn to the Fire
3. Ichi the Witch
4. Sakamoto Days
5. Me & Roboco
Mostly good stuff:
6. Kagurabachi
7. Shinobi Undercover
8. WITCH WATCH
9. Blue Box

Firmly decent:
10. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
11. Hima-Ten!
12. Someone Hertz
13. Nue's Exorcist

2026 series aren't hitting this week:
14. Kinato's Magic
15. Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits
16. Under Doctor
17. Roku's House of Oddities
18. Alien Headbutt

Yep. I'm fully convinced the Rakugo Association is responsible for 4/5 of Akane's manga sales. You can't change my mind.

Me and Roboco did a RuriDragon parody on chapter 98, when the manga was on chapter 5, why do you think it doesn’t reference Ruri anymore?

What do you guys make of the development in Nue? Feels like the ending is in sight for Nue within a year or so.

Also is there any word for the JP online reception to what the heck is happening with Kinato?
