great issue! i quite love the new batch so far, the basketball manga has greatly surprised me and roku is budget witch watch in the best way. next week is sorachi too so this is just going to be a great few weeks.

sad to see hero girl go, it had tons of charm and I'll remember it a little fonder than most I guess? also tons of oomph from kagurabachi and nue, really hoping the latter gets its due soon i really cannot wait for both to be animated

issue votes
1) blue box
2) kagurabachi
3) roku
4) drawn to the flame
5) Shinobi undercover

This has nothing to do with the issue but I've been rereading Beelzebub and holy shit the scan quality is awful, it looks like an overly soft AI upscale half the time; this is a problem that plagues multiple series from the era and it sucks that it'll never get fixed considering how much effort it would take
Luckily the bad scans are only at the very beginning. It's been a while since I've done a reread, but it's only like the first few volumes that are like that. Hope you end up enjoying it. In my top 5 favorite Jump series. Highly recommend giving his current series Cosmos a read too. He's come a long way, and it's by far his best work. (also where my current avatar is from)

Edit: Just realized you said rereading. My bad. Also missed the AI Upscale part which wouldn't have been a thing during my last read. All I remember is them having that horrible scan quality that I grew up with and was used to lol.

It probably is those old scans, they just remind me of shitty AI upscales with how soft they are
Hilariously enough I've read through Cosmos multiple times and it's also where my own avatar is from (though it mightve been hard to tell since it came from one of the storyboard sketches)

Nah, I just gave it a check and I'm pretty sure those are either AI Upscales, or higher quality but still mediocre scans. The ones I remember were like, unreadable at points and very dark lol. Still better than nothing though. Makes me want to do a reread as well. Just a shame Viz never translated it.

And lol shows how much I pay attention to pfp's haha. Glad to see more Cosmos fans though. It really is so damn good!

Bad timing is part of it, but its more at some point, you have to realize your passes aren't working. The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result yeah? If I'm the coach, and I see that his passes just aren't working (even if I know it's because his teammates are not good) and he refuses to shoot more or try something like draw fouls, I'm questioning how Keiki processes the game in the moment to moment gameplay. If your offense is in a major rut, you have to at least try to change it up by doing something else. Jalen Brunson or SGA go to driving and trying to draw fouls if their shots aren't going in, Jokic starts shooting 3s and working the post if he sees its one of those games where his teammates aren't making shots off his passes, James Harden knows when he needs to be prime MVP Harden instead of insane passer and playmaker old man Harden. Wemby knows which game to be an offensive monster versus focusing more on locking down the opponent's entire team by himself. Keiki didn't really show any of that in the middle school game. He wasn't doubled so I'm assuming he didn't take that many shots or tried driving much (even if he kept missing, doing it enough times would show the opponent's team that he's the only person who could create their own offense and thus would be the only one worth guarding). They imply all his turnovers were his teammates not catching his passes, so he wasn't being aggressive.

To be clear, I don't think Keiki actually has bad basketball IQ. The present day match in the second half of the chapter shows that he does actually understand what his role is on a team and he knows how to get a ball to a player if they're talented. He can read the opponent well and make the correct play. But a part of having good basketball IQ is understanding your teammates' shortcomings and adjusting your own play to better suit the team. He realized Natsu was basically unstoppable in this game, so he worked hard to make Natsu's life easier. But he didn't do that in the middle school game. He was trying to make good plays in middle school, not necessarily the correct play. Making the correct play is a sign of good basketball IQ, making a good play isn't automatically a sign of good basketball IQ.

If you're stuck on a team of scrubs who can't keep up with your high level passes, you need to 1) shoot more so you can actually score or so the opponent sees your the only person worth guarding and they double you more (and from there, when you pass to the open teammate, they have more room for error since they have more space to fumble the pass if they can't catch it). 2) If you don't shoot, then you have to stop attempting to make openings by yourself and try moving the ball around the entire court more with simple passes so the defenders might move out of position and make openings that are easier to pass to. Run simple plays to get offball movement. Keiki didn't do either. So if I was the coach of his middle school team, I'd be questioning if he had good basketball IQ. If I saw him in high school, I'd be able to tell he does have good basketball IQ.
Thanks for the elaboration :amuse. I’d say we can agree that Keiki still has room to improve, and this might be touched upon (if the author knows what they’re doing). I’m hoping that this writing choice might be a fluke, so I think we should cut the author some slack at this point so early.

Looking forward to the next chapters!

NBA's basketball had some players who changed how the sport is practiced in the last 10 years or so.

Mizuhara's passing is certainly based on Nikola Jokic, who lead his team to their first championship a year before the one shot was released.
White Chocolate was my first impression, lol

4. Blue Box 237
5. Shinobi Undercover 76

Because I don’t have enough time for my individual thoughts on the chapters themselves I’ll post my ranking first and post my thoughts another time.

But I will say one thing, the chapters that I read this issue ranged from good to awesome. With the bottom 3 in my ranking being the worst ones even though they were still good.

Okay, after reading quite a lot of opinions, Drawn to the Fire reception seems to be....mixed? It's really not as positive as the western opinions so far would make you think, it's nothing terrible but it's clearly divided between the ones who liked or found interesting, the ones in the middle who are like "it was ok" and the ones who didn't like and these are being vocal specially picking on the sudden change of the mc personality from "i'm no good" to "sorry, did i draw you again" with a arrogant face during the game, it seems like that rubbed people in a wrong way because i'm seeing being mentioned quite a lot as making the mc unlikeable. Of course this doesn't mean the manga is DOA or anything, like i said, the reception is far from being terrible or anything is just that it's clearly not as positive as you would think.

About Roku's House, this one might be a surprise for you guys but it still pretty positive, i did wonder if it would start getting negative already based on how everybody seemed to start being negative but no, the majority is positive, even on Matome of all places is being nowhere near as negative you would think, there are people saying they didn't find much funny or that the humor feels "old" but overall the reception in the Forums and etc are good, Sachiko seems to be the clear favorite character (She is pretty cute).

That doesn't mean it will survive.

Twitter impressions. New series is doing close to what every recent debut did:

Is it though? There's almost never consensus here and we are always arguing over even small stuff like Gonron Egg vs Osoegawa (that's a good thing). Most impressions here about Drawn semeed more to it's fine instead of glowing praise and it's not like Roku was universally hated. If anything, there were more people down on the Under Doctor, Kinato and Alien batch here than in places like the WSJ reddit where they're shocked at the bottom placements. lol

I think both of the new series will struggle to get popularity in Japan though, Sorachi's new manga very likely will be a hit, so at least they'll get their first 2026 success.

You guys are putting way too much expectation on the Sorachi manga. What if it flops like Samurai 8 or Tenmaku Cinema?

I don't have much expectations of Sorachi's new manga personally, I enjoyed Gintama but another bland as hell Hero vs Demon Lord in school manga? Yawn.

It'll need to have absolutely fantastic characters to get past how dull the premise sounds.

I don't think anyone would care for Gintama by its premise of swordsmen against aliens. So I don't see why I should not hype Sorachi's New Series.

Just another bad gamble. You lose 99% of the bets you make, but you lose 100% of the bets you don't make.

I'm just half spitballing, mostly because it's funny. But it does bear some merit. Some, not all. We've all advocated for some total flops here and there, no problem owning up to it. It would be decently funny if Roku managed to get past the Drawn despite sentiments here skewing more towards the latter. Though, I do think Roku's character designs are immediately appealing so I wonder how the series will adjust itself if things don't go well for it.

Publishing next to Sorachi might be a buff, if some theories about Someone Hertz catching people's attention due to starting at the same time as JJK Modulo are to be accepted. Personally, that theory downplays Someone Hertz' merits, where I think it stands up fine as a manga on its own, but it's definitely not for me. Could be interesting. The 2026 starters might be dead in the water, cause it's a turbulent time where there's no hanger-ons ready to cushion a brutal axe.

Sharkbait. Question since you seem to be up there with Shinuki, Magister, Nemu, Wyd, Redon and Ryo when it comes to the magazine: What are some stuff you noticed that changed drastically for the worse or better when it comes to jump?
So late to this lol (sorry, Inazuma Eleven Victory Road takes all my free time)...

1. Loss of sports as a mainstay, after Haikyuu there was nothing traditional left, we had that kurobas and haikyuu run but nothing else; also baseball is where in jump? soccer, hello?
2. Loss of "must follow/viral series' arguably none of the series that debuted in the 2020's have that same kind of power to get everyone talking about them anymore week after week, perhaps its becuase people grew up reading the stories with them for multiple years, Ichi or Kaguarabachi dont have the same level of must-follow-must speak about it~ness. By the time some series approach that point, the anime is already out and the manga is practically in the endgame or ending (JJK for example).
3. Encouragement of faster pace/get to the point type of storytelling, generally seems like jump manga now-a-days don't really meander as much at the beginning and creators are aware they gotta do what they gotta do in 8 weeks or sooner; the concept of the "first three chapters is actually just a long one shot I split into three parts" seems to be a recipe for failure that creators are avoiding, similar to how its nearly a death sentence to do a "Qualification Exam" in the first 8 chapters now when it worked in the past.
4. Character designs are improved; artwork and characters look much cuter now than in the past.
