yeah
which meant the decision was made when chapter 3 or 4 had just released
It's the other way around. We already know the first three chapters are longer, they are required to be presented at the serialization meeting before the weekly schedule starts.
If they receive the notice at chapter 7 (released to public), the authors are already working on chapter 10.

Neru's author said he got the notice when chapter 4, or around that, was coming out. If someone can find the quote, it'll be helpful, but they do get told that early.

EDIT: My mistake, author didn't give a number, but as you can see it's way earlier in the serialization than even a Jump author assumed.

That means a creator has to really have a high hitting chapter 1 and 2. Going into it with the "let me meticulously build an elaborate world with deep and engrossing character dynamics, interactions, and storylines, and complex comedy" is not possible anymore.

Shonen Jump has always been like that:

From my limited knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong because I'm actually curious) mangaka have the first 10 chapters planned out by start of serialisation and are have a 3-4 chapter buffer. So if you get the call at chapter 5 say you would already have started on 7 and 8 by now right? Having to reorganise and turn in a comprehensible ending seems like a real hassle, no wonder alot of them seem to just blegh out towards the end, makes me respect those who can hash out something satisfying even more. Also that means they know the exact issue they end too right?

I’m not the biggest fan of Kiyoshi but it’s honestly getting annoying hearing folks call it a nepo baby manga ngl. Like I’m pretty sure this series is still around because of reader surveys and jumps lower standards for volume sales now.

Yeah, they know the number of chapters left and what issue it'll end on. Same goes for other endings, this is why even some hit series feel rushed a bit, if editorial tells them to wrap up in 15~20 chapters, they have to change plans as well.

Yeah i can't roll my eyes enough when i read this kind of thing, the same magazine infamous for their ruthless treatment with their veterans, even legends like Kishimoto, is out of nowhere protecting a newbie just because he worked for a while as a Oda assistant :grin

This is a thing that has happened overall in the manga magazine industry for a bit, but Jump is the most vicious of the bunch.

Anyway, personal bets for tomorrow's TOC:

Top five: One Piece, Sakamoto Days, Kagurabachi, Ichi The Witch, and Nue's Exorcist

Middle: Witch Watch, Akane Banashi, Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi, Shinobi Undercover

Bottom: Under Doctor, Alien Butthead, Kinato's Magic, Himaten, and Me and Roboco.

I know, I'm a Kinato fan, but I am trying to be realistic here now. Did my best to defend it for a bit, but even I cannot ignore the problem now.

Did not mention the color pages, mostly because the positions do not really matter in their case.Same forthe yet ranked new series.

For the next issue, mybet is the following:

Lead Cover Page: Kagurabachi

Color Pages: Sakamoto Days, Me and Roboco, a one-shot story (Beginning of the Future Jump Project, I hope, mostly because I think it would be good to have right now before any new batch in the summer period), and Class 2-B: Hero Destroyers.

We don't truly know how it works for hit series or the ones who decline in popularity, we do have explanations like Sorachi saying how the ending of long running series works, according to him it's the authors who tell the editors when they want to end the series, so they get a 5/6 months time to wrap the story and give the editorial time to plan the new series to fill that space + advertisement and stuff about the ending, and the author has for real to end the series in that time which didn't worked for Sorachi and it was the reason why Gintama had to move to GIGA and moved to that app in the end, because Sorachi was unable to finish the series in the time he was given, which in fact explain quite a lot about why Jump series often feels so rushed.

There's also a interview with Tamura Ryuhei where he states that the ending of Beelzebub was all according to his plan and there was no editorial interference despite many feeling like the final arc rushed towards the end + sales and ranking in decline at the time.

My predictions:

-Lead Color Pages i will bet in Kagurabachi, this because besides the series getting the lead in the #22-23 of last year, Jump Direct will broadcast 1 day before the issue release, so the timing does feels quite right but i wouldn't be surprise if is Sakamoto Days for the Live Action release and Kagurabachi on #24

-Color Pages will be: Class 2-B, Sakamoto Days for live action release if Kgb gets the lead, if SD gets the lead so Me & Roboco for vol release, and for the 3rd cp i will continue to bet on Kinato's Magic, but it will probably be Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi for vol release.

-Bottom Five will be: Nue's Exorcist, Alien Headbutt, Kinato's Magic, Under Doctor and Hima-Ten!

-Top 5 will be: One Piece, Ichi the Witch, Sakamoto Days, Kagurabachi and Akane-banashi

Mhm...

ISSUE 21 Prediction:
Lead - Sakamoto Days (live action + volume)
Colors: Class 2-B, Me & Roboco and Alien Headbutt

ISSUE 22/23 Prediction:
Lead - Kagurabachi (volume + anime? popularity poll?)
Colors: Someone Hertz, Kiyoshi and Hima-ten (all 3 for volume releases)

ISSUE 24 (Bonus for fun):
Surely Ichi the Witch for volume release (idk if cover or just colorpage)

I just don't get what went wrong for Kinato. If anyone has any thoughts of why the JP didn't like it and the first chapters, I'd appreciate it. I'm just really bewildered how the same standard is kept nowadays. This next chapter of Roku needs to be a hoot f it wants to stay. Big chapter for drawn by fire too; I presume chapter 1 did well since it's basically just the well received one shot.

I thought Sorachi said Gintama was close to cancelation but he was able to turn things around after a couple volumes. Does that mean it was successful enough but on the edge?

after all, that's why you saw so many WSJ manga suddenly didnt know where to go after 3 chapters, as all of the effort went to them and the schedule pressure was catching up

I don't know what went wrong with the early chapters but I can tell you that, in my opinion, this latest chapter is some dogshit. Easily one of worst, most desperate pivots I've read in years. It deserves the axe just for this.
