That's is a really interesting point, I guess at least in some cases the initial cancellation warning is more 'this is your last chance, you have X chapters to turn it around or you're gone' rather than a guaranteed death sentence? But it's functionally a death sentence since it's so rare for series to recover. I wonder if there's been anything else like Kiyoshi that actually turned things around and had the cancellation rescinded.

Looking back, when it was around ch 20 is when Syd Craft started just on its own, so either they delayed a new series to keep Kiyoshi (which seems unlikely considering the next batch still only had 2 series), or they cancelled something else in place of it.

The series that got cancelled to make space for Syd Craft was... Youkai Buster Murakami. Yeah that sounds about right, It was put as a deliberately last gag manga before it was even ranked, so perhaps that really was to hide its godawful rankings since Saito wanted it around for longer.

I feel like it's more Hakutaku must have done abysmally from the start that they felt comfortable cancelling it as soon as they could once it got enough chapters for a volume. Chapter 3 of Hakutaku came out the issue chapter 15 of Kiyoshi did, so I think it's possible the editorial team thought it was going to crash and burn after seeing survey results for chapter 1 (since again, they get feedback way before the TOC reflects reception), so they were more cautious with Kiyoshi in turn and told the author it's in danger but not done (and the author, like most people would, just assumed that meant cancelled because that's what happens 99% of the time).

Hakutaku released chapter 7 by the time the volume 1 of Kiyoshi came out, which is more than enough time for an axed series to get the notice. They saw Kiyoshi's volume 1 sales weren't hopeless and it started getting support in the survey, so they decided on axeing Hakutaku instead.

I think Murakami being a gigantic bomb is an independent thing and only affected itself and maybe Syd Craft getting brought up slightly earlier.

I do feel like Otr was another attempt at this, just because it was ranking similarly to how Kiyoshi was at that point, and it got that volume 1 color page to try and boost it. Otherwise idk, but it would be fun to like try and find similar scenarios, because I can't buy that this has only happened and been successful for kiyoshi lol.

Obviously it didn't only happened with Kiyoshi, we even have the drastic example of series like Rising Impact or Hareluya Boy where it actually got axed and immediately returned due to big fan outcry, is just that we don't have many authors openly saying it.

Ah cool.

It certainly wouldn't hurt them to give it a chance... :(

Btw, we have Jujutsu Kaisen, is a known fact told by Gege the series was about to get axed at the beginning until Gege decided kill Yuji and that completely turned around the series popularity

The wedding chapter of yozakura family always felt like one of those “our journeys just begun” endings I wouldn’t be surprised if that was planned to be where it ended at some point, 18 chapters would be about right for that

He probably got the cancelation notice around ch 10~15 to start planning the end of the series but vol 1 decent sales and Asuta Roth driving the survey up that came immediately after that just made the editorial go back in the decision, Horie, former EiC said that there are cases of series that they decide to axe where popularity start to only rise later on:

"Horie admitted that the decision to cancel some series can be made too early. He said, "There are also cases where manga go up in popularity little by little," and that fact is sometimes overlooked. Horie said that the standard for cancellation is 10 weeks, but some series start to gain popularity by the seventh or eighth week."
This angers me so much. I know WSJ is the GOAT because it’s so cut throat (and that cut throatness did force kiyoshi to evolve) but I wonder how many great series have been cut short due to a lack of just a little leniency. Under doctor and kinatos first volume will be super important. I also think jump should be a bit more opaque in their TOC placement. I feel like if a series is last, people turn on it and stop supporting it when maybe the would have if it was a bit more disguised

I wouldn't be surprised if Kimetsu was in that boat. I remember when Muzan was first introduced it seemed to a few of us here that it was to end the series.
Then it became literally the biggest Jump series lol.

I think about this a lot. It almost makes me wish that WSJ had a "second tier" just like in non-american sports, where teams get relegated. This could allow for these less-popular series to gain momentum, albeit in another mag (in this second-tier mag). If they got popular/good enough, they could be "promoted" to the 1st division, i.e., WSJ.

Been having some conversations and looking back at all the series that started the 2020’s with Zipman! being the first. And it was through their PV’s and figuring out their successes and failures. More importantly was discussing their flaws and the reactions were at the time. I reached 2024, but no one wanted to talk about Syd Craft which was really telling by one person.

I mean, the idea sounds nice at first, but where is the profit in that? Why print an entire magazine for series that will mostly be unpopular and sell less than 3k, just for the hope that some of them may get popular after a year or so? Only to move it to another magazine after where a huge chunk of the new audience won't be caught up. Sounds like a death sentence for these series if they did finally gain an audience.
Like sure, other magazines tend to have series that don't sell very well, but Shueshia has enough magazines as is, alongside Jump+ which already is the "second tier" Weekly Shonen Jump to an extent.
I honestly feel modern Jump is too lenient by allowing series like Otr to run for over half a year.

I wouldn’t go that far. It would be lenient more when Nakano was in charge, but things would be different with Saito.

Otr ran for half a year with Saito.
But yea, the leniency did start with Nakano, but in 2 years Nakano already had Jujutsu Kaisen & Chainsaw Man as mega-hits. As well as Act-Age which would've been a multimedia mega-hit if it wasn't for the author.
Sure, Saito has Ichi and Someone Hertz. but I think Nakano had a much stronger first two years than Saito. He was a lot more willing to take risks with his serializations.

But regardless, modern Jump is far more lenient than it used to be.

Yeah, Nakano had a strong 2 years, but if he was more prepared for 2020, it wouldn’t have been to much of a disaster with how the exodus was. For Saito, it will become a similar situation with 5 more established titles concluding this year. Even others I’ve talked with are comparing Saito bringing back Sorachi is like how Nakano bringing back Kishimoto. Hopefully it will be a different story cause at least Class 2-B is still funny and endearing, but somewhat stuck with some jokes that are from the first chapter. Even though a majority are toilet jokes, at least they are well written and delivered in a funny way.
