Here are a few thoughts on the Family Heads and their role and balance within the Tower. Since I’m not perfectly fluent in English, I used AI to slightly improve and rephrase my original text written in my native language, so apologies if the tone feels a bit stiff or overly formal at times.

Let's be honest, we love the Family Heads, they are the lifeblood of Tower of God.

The Ten Great Family Heads in Tower of God feel less like rulers and more like people who went through a deep transformation over time. They started as explorers, companions, fully emotional beings. But after millennia of power, loss, and responsibility, most of them ended up suppressing or sealing their emotions and memories—not out of cruelty, but as a way to cope. What we see now isn’t their true nature, but something constructed: a kind of artificial balance that lets them function without collapsing under everything they’ve experienced.

Zahard sits right at the center of this. He’s presented as the antagonist, but it’s very possible he originally acted for what he believed were good reasons. Stopping the climb of the Tower might not have been about control, but about preventing something worse—maybe even the birth of an Axis at the cost of the entire Tower. In that sense, he’s maybe less a tyrant and more a tragic figure: someone who chose preservation over change, knowing it would freeze everything and slowly corrupt the system.

Gustang is the first one to really break that long-standing stagnation. What makes him interesting is that he doesn’t pretend to be morally superior. He puts himself in the same category as the others and acts with a kind of cold clarity. He doesn’t feel guilt anymore, but he still has a form of intellectual honesty. His goal isn’t to kill the other Heads, but to remove what makes them untouchable—mainly their immortality contracts—so that the Towerborn can decide what comes next - if that is even possible. He’s not a destroyer, he’s more like someone trying to reset the system.

From there, you can kind of split the others based on how they’d react. Khun Edhan would probably get involved out of curiosity and love of challenge more than conviction. Ha Yurin feels like she’d react on instinct or by being triggered—impulsive rather than ideological. On the other side, figures like Bloodmadder, Ari, and Yeon seem more inclined to defend the current system, prioritizing stability and control over change.

Traumerei is a really striking example of what these people become after shutting everything down emotionally. He feels completely detached, almost less human and more like a force within the system. He doesn’t need to prove anything—his presence alone is enough. But that balance is fragile. When he loses the mechanisms that suppress his emotions, everything comes back at once and completely overwhelms him. That shows that underneath the calm, there isn’t emptiness—there’s too much to handle. His detachment isn’t transcendence, it’s containment.

Arie Hon seems to go in a different direction. Instead of emotional suppression, he feels more like someone built around a single idea taken to its extreme. The Arie focus on swordsmanship may not be just about fighting—but about precision, clarity, and maybe even a belief in a single, absolute truth. That could make him less internally fractured than the others, but also more rigid. He wouldn’t be escaping reality—he’d be reducing it to a principle, which could clash hard with a system that’s evolving or breaking down.

The Ari family adds another layer of ambiguity. They present themselves as peacekeepers, but their methods suggest something closer to preemptive elimination—removing threats before they fully exist (no idea how Baam did even climb the lower floors unoticed by them). So instead of maintaining balance, they enforce stability through control. There’s a kind of hypocrisy there: they represent peace on the surface, but operate through suppression, which actually puts them quite close to the logic of the status quo.

Blossom and Tu Perie stand apart as wild cards. Blossom seems to relate to shinsu in a more intuitive way, almost like she’s listening to it rather than controlling it. That suggests a different kind of understanding, one that might be closer to the nature of the Tower itself. In any case, she feels like an instinctive, an intuitive, and she doesn't seem to care much about politics, but may act out of raw emotions or impulses.

Tu Perie, on the other hand, is fascinating because of how little we heard of him and his family. This is the only family that was never mentioned in the serie.
As an extreme Light Bearer, he might represent pure perception. His absence doesn’t feel like a gap, it feels intentional. He could maybe be the only one who kept both his memory and his emotional continuity, choosing to observe instead of act. His defining trait would then be patience—not passivity, but a kind of long-term awareness that operates on a completely different timescale.

At the same time, there’s another possibility: if he really sees everything through something like the God Eye—maybe even causality, past and future—then action itself might lose meaning. He could either be the most lucid consciousness in the system, or the most disengaged one. Someone who understands everything, and therefore has no reason left to intervene. It reminds me of Repelista, although she is not confirmed as a Tu Perie: she does not care to climb, but instead observe the tower or play video games.

In the end, the Family Heads aren’t just powerful characters. They each represent a different way of dealing with the same problem: what do you do when you understand the true nature—and the cost—of the system you’re part of? Some froze it, some withdrew, some ignored it, and now a few are starting to try to change it.

Apologies to offer a thread that is not about power levels.

Some extra thoughts, kind of off the cuff.

Yurin doesn’t really interest me that much—I basically imagine her as Yuri but on a transcendent level.

Edhan was honestly a bit disappointing in the Mazino spin-off. The Khun family, just like the Arie family, has a really strong visual identity and presence in the series. Maybe SIU wanted to balance the overexposure of the Khuns by making Edhan a bit goofy or even ridiculous, but the character feels pretty figured out at this point. Traumerei had way more charisma.

The Ari family doesn’t really have a strong visual identity and comes off as pretty hypocritical, but the whole “guardians of the wells” concept is promising.

Gustang is super interesting and really acts as the main trigger for the story, kind of like Rachel. Rachel is hated by readers to an insane degree—she’s basically a completely unlikeable character in every way, but she keeps the story moving. She’s a unique case: not just a hated character, but one you don’t even enjoy hating—you almost hate the fact that you hate her. And to be fair, everything works against her, especially her constant victim mentality while she keeps screwing people over and blaming others for it. But that’s also what makes her fascinating—I honestly can’t think of another character quite like her, in any serie.

We haven’t seen much of Yeon and her family, but she feels kind of bland so far—fire powers, nothing that really stands out.

Traumerei and Gustang were great, but their families less so. At this point, you kind of want to see something new. I’m still wondering where Gustang’s descendants even come from—can his writings reproduce or something?

The Khuns, while iconic, are starting to feel very repetitive. Bloodmadder is still mostly a mystery, but instinctively, he doesn’t interest me that much.

Ari—we’re finally learning more about them; I’m not super into the family, but there’s definitely potential there.

About the Eurasia family, I’m really curious how they even produce descendants, since by all accounts Blossom doesn’t seem to be involved in that at all. And Zahard… well, yeah. Obviously everyone wants to know more about him.

Give me Tu Perie already, damn it.

If they sealed their memories/emotions etc. What we are seeing is their true nature. It was their decision. They aren't some innocent guys who did nothing wrong.

I wonder if there will be any family leader or a GF who will have as much drip as LPB. After seeing more Khun's, PB and especially Ari, I doubt any other family can surpass LPB family in drip

My impression about zahard is that on a mental level he will be different from the other family heads. As we have seen many, probably all, of the family heads struggle with the weight of their unending lives. They deal by erasing their own memories (though blossom might not have). Zahard in turn has revealed his goal is to control fate. Which on it's own already sounds axis adjacent. In the spinoff we get the reveal that the tower's purpose is very probably to create a new axis. So zahard didn't stay in the tower to rule an empire or be king, both of those are probably means to an end. He stayed in the tower to rise even higher and to claim everything which the shining ones were looking for. I wouldn't be surprised if zahard along among his peers has not tampered with his memories to cope.

I said it already, but all of Zahard's actions rather seem to suggest the opposite. He seems to want to prevent that. Why would he close the door to the higher levels otherwise ? And if anything, Enne suggested that Zahard did tamper with his memories even more so than the rest : "the current Zahard is not the Zahard I vowed to serve". He was also the one who got the idea of the Red Bin. The "why" they closed the tower remains a big mystery, but so far, I feel like Zahard wanted to prevent the tower from being consummed.

To me what holds the most weight here is zahard talking about wanting to control fate. Which as I said seems at least adjacent to what axis do. With this in mind to me what makes the most sense is that zahard closed the door to prolong his time in the tower to claim everything it has to offer. The dumpster stuff is suggestive but we don't know what the context here is. Ultimately there is no guarantee that finishing the climb alone would make someone an immense being like phanta or urek.

I think they just failed the test. Zahard becoming a king and Traumerei's going crazy over Ameuz, all that causing the war and the death of Arlene's baby is basically the fate that would make Baam be born. It's all manipulated by Headon. Zahard may want to find a way to control the fate of the tower by becoming Its 'Axis' through another means, however, unless Traumerei told Gustang that Zahard has become an axis, I think Zahard failed and that's the reason why he threw himself into the dumpster.

I'm one of those who believe the current Zahard is just a pretender.

Zahard becoming a king and Traumerei's going crazy over Ameuz, all that causing the war and the death of Arlene's baby
After they stopped climbing, Arlene and V left.
Zahard wanted marry Arlene and when he came to the "floor of death" he killed Arlene'baby.

But it took 500 years to Yuri to climb the Tower how long it took for the 13 first Princesses?
200 or 300 years I guess, during those time the famillies wasn't at war.
Traumerei killed Ameuz because Zahard wanted to avoid that some FH joined Arlene or stayed neutral. When? When the 13 princesses climbed the Tower or after.

I think they just failed the test. Zahard becoming a king
Zahard wanted to be the King when he was climbing, we don't have any details about the faillure but the result is aventageous for the Administrators: the Families gave a lot of children to the Tower.

the fate that would make Baam be born. It's all manipulated by Headon.
Someone/Headon made the promesse to V to climb again and V used Baam's bodie, Headon manipulated them but how did he know that Baam will be resurected?

someone who chose preservation over change
If producing an axis means the end of the tower and everything inside it then it is more of a "Survival over climb" thing

He’s not a destroyer, he’s more like someone trying to reset the system
Gustang is a destroyer. He himself said that he plans to kill FH's.
He wants to destroy the current system/FH's for its/thier sins

I think they just failed the test.
If they failed the test then why would they try to stop others from climbing the tower?

While I do belive that Headon manipulated it, I think his objective was to stop GW's from climbing the tower.

Remember headon can lower the difficulty of test or even alter some rules as he is the head admin of entire tower, if he wanted to, he could have easily made the test more easy for GW's

and in Tog NW game, edhan mentioned that he really wants to start the climb again and experience those battles.... however he has to stop because of the terrible truth he/they learned, the one that will devour the entire tower

The myth is being broken.

Early TOG presented the Family Heads as almost inaccessible beings. The point was never merely power. It was ontological distance.

Rankers were humans. High Rankers were heroes. The Family Heads were something else entirely.

We were told that even the greatest members of their own Families could go their entire lives without meeting them. Their appearance was a historical event. Their mere presence could overwhelm an entire room. They had lived for millennia and stood at the very foundation of the Tower's history.
That created something unique. They were not characters. They were world-defining principles.

They felt closer to Tolkien's Valar, the Greek gods, or legendary primordial rulers than to ordinary people. The mystery itself was part of their power.

Traumerei largely preserved that feeling. He was not simply strong; he felt ancient, alien, tragic, and fundamentally different from everyone around him.

By contrast, Eduan is increasingly treated as Urek's comic sidekick, and Ari Shin is introduced almost like a D-Rank Regular, complete with a comedic gag. The Family Heads are becoming familiar, approachable, and human. That may make them more relatable, but it comes at the cost of their numinous presence.

The revelation that Ari Shin and Yurin built their Families through relationships with Towerborn reinforces that shift. The problem is not the biology. The problem is symbolic. The Heads no longer feel like a separate order of beings. They increasingly feel like very powerful people.

And that is where the disappointment comes from. TOG once treated the Family Heads as living myths, almost as forces of nature. Now they are gradually becoming ordinary characters with quirks, jokes, and sitcom-like interactions. The mystery is gone, and for me, nothing equally powerful has replaced it.

FHs are fraudulent gods. They are still very strong being able to match shining ones who themselves were godlike but theres always a bigger fish.

Axis are true gods now. Phanta , Eos Baam and urek represent true peak of TOG.

Yes, but again my issue is not with power levels but with symbolic presence. What has been built for decades in a narrative sense is being destroyed just like that. I really don't care if Urek or a shiny is stronger in a fight.

I think that's going a bit too far. Urek is as far as we know one of the stronger beings in the series but in spite of that he behaves like a person to others. Phantaminum is probably just a dude in a fish hoodie that wields unimaginable darkness (and who knows what else). The family heads in practice can't be what they are sold as since if they were then bam wouldn't be able to win against them. On top of that there's a consistent framing is that what family heads are is ultimately wrong. What the family heads need to be is immense compared to 99.9999% of towerborns but the story doesn't require them to be that seemingly immense when they are among peers.

Again, Urek was sold as a casual guy from the start. I have no issue with Urek. I have an issue when what has been built lore-wise is destroyed. It's not about who is a true god or who is stronger.

Urek is casual, but he doesn't have to be. He gets hurt trying to see the good in people and he hasn't become a monster like the GWs. His past is still a mystery but it's clear he has been through a lot.

The GWs are all geniuses but they are mostly playing gods and stopped trying to climb the Tower. They are deified in the Tower, use special means to hide their trauma but in the end they are human beings.

What you are saying is from a reader perspective seeing them like the Towerborns in-universe. Gustang, Traumerei, Eduan, they aren't treated casually by their subordinates and Towerborns in general.

Eduan is acting like Urek's subordinate because at the moment... he is LOL. That was the bet. Eduan would also not behave like this with a Towerborn. His behavior on the 2F shows this perfectly.
