Blue box really feels like Miura realize she is gonna be jobless soon and will never write anything as successful as BB again. So she is buying time
And it doesn't help that the actual sports are the weakest part of her writing, I feel like I've been reading a variation of the same chapter for the past two months.

They did a couple of GFC one-shots, that being Vroom and I think their second is called Middle of Kowloon.
They did a third one in 2023 called "Kadomori Shitei no Nichijou" (Daily Lives of the Kadomori Siblings)

And it doesn't help that the actual sports are the weakest part of her writing, I feel like I've been reading a variation of the same chapter for the past two months.
I actually feel the opposite; the sports are the only parts that aren't retreading old ground. Taiki's match with Kyo was refreshing since for 200 chapters he was just the dude that Miura decided was Taiki's best friend and somehow got a love triangle about him despite not having much personality. Here though, we actually got a glimpse as to why Kyo is an actual character and what actually makes him engaging. Taiki's match with Yusa is less about Taiki and more about the general idea of "work hard in high school and leave no regrets, and you'll be satisfied". It shows that Taiki genuinely just loves badminton. He works hard because he's immersed, not because he's chasing the illusion that Chinatsu likes hard workers. Chinatsu's match against Yumeka finally gave a glimpse into Chinatsu not being the ideal dream girl who gets everything done and inspires everyone. We actually got to see someone who felt let down and angry with her. It showed Chinatsu actually had worries besides basketball going on in her head.

The sports parts are the ones that demonstrate the series themes (high school is a once in a lifetime experience so treasure it, sometimes you fail in your goals but it's alright if you can learn something from it, sports is a good way to connect with other people, etc.) the best. It's the romance parts that feel out of left field and trying to repeat the same thing over and over. If this wasn't a shonen romance manga, I'm pretty sure most people would be saying that Taiki and Chinatsu have serious problems as a couple how does Chinatsu make a major life changing decision like studying abroad without even talking to Taiki about it and then just spring it on him out of nowhere, and how does Taiki just accept it no problem? He can even approve of it still, but man, at least tell her your own fears and worries about it before encouraring her. These two never talk and communicate.. The Hina retrend didn't do anything that couldn't already be summized the first time she confessed in the mid 60s chapters. I still don't think the Kyo love triangle really added anything to the series since Ayame herself didn't add much to the series.

I do think the sports part will start dragging if we actually see nationals though. Everything about Taiki's character is going to be explored by the end of this match, nothing new can really be added if we see him go to nationals.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Miura doesn't take much long to return but with Matsuura drawing and serializing that one shot or maybe a new story, they seems to be good friends.

Honestly, putting aside the writing, Blue Box just doesn't look that good anymore? Like it never puts out unfinished chapters like Sakamoto does, but honestly the facial proportions have gotten pretty bad. Like idk how to describe it, but I just do not like how Miura draws faces on any of her characters, Taiki especially looks so ugly.

Like you cannot tell me this is a good artsyle change. I get that its probably the pressures of weekly serialization, but the series always looks like this now, at least Sakamoto will only look sketchy a third of the time...

And that is literally not the worst panel. A lot of times the character literally become triangles with very small pupils

I agree about her artstyle evolution but you definitely did not use the worst panel of Taiki out there, he actually looks pretty fine here considering many other moments :grin

And btw, Miura is constantly mocked on JP Forums about the color pages and volume covers with the "bug eyes" characters saying they're scary lol

I really hope Blue Box doesn't go deep into nationals, this current match is very clearly the culmination of all the badminton stuff. I'm not sure what exactly would be the best way to tackle it (just summarising it and saying he lost in round 2 or something would also be unsatisfying) but there's nothing built up character-wise to tackle in nationals.

Himaten's direction is interesting, Honoka's the typical boring 'she's the girl I liked first and nothing's changed since ch 1' ending that I think it'll still unfortunately go for in the end, but Himari's not out the story yet and I'm interested to see what happens. She's had so much development and time spent delving into her emotions that it wouldn't be right if she was just written off the way Kanna was.

Class 2-B has completely pivoted now compared to the first few chapters. I still find it pretty dull, but at least it's not nothing but poop jokes. It's obvious this was always the plan from the title but I can't help but wonder, from how sudden and dramatic the shift has been, if it was planned to screw around on school stuff for a while and this development has been rushed ahead. It feels too early for reaction to bad reception already, but Ghost Writer was a series that very clearly started rushing the story around ch 5-6.

UNDER DOCTOR: It looks like we’ve reached a new story arc; I’m curious to find out more (these Asclepius could make for some very interesting villains)
Kiyoshi: Nice ending, though I don't think it's the end of the entire story arc.. but Usui has really improved on the issues he had in the BP

As if Himari isn't your typical boring "blond/orange hair & tsundere-ish type of girl that the mc suddenly realises at the end of the series that he likes it more than the girl he has loved most of his life" lol

If anything Honoka winning would be a different ending compared to how it usually go in these romcom series and also the name of the manga being "Hima-Ten" kkkk
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Tbf Kanna not winning is probably the biggest BS in Hima-Ten if being realistic, unless we're talking about your soul mate type of thing i find hard to picture a teenage guy genuinely turning down a girl like Kanna in real life after all these interactions and time spent with her :grin

1. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: I have a soft spot for pure shonen manga arc endings. Everyting came full circle, the evil enemies got their redemption, and they even had an afterbattle celebration party. What can I ask more from a Jump series?
2. RuriDragon: Welcome back! We restart from where we left off, hoping for a much desired dragon reveal. We have bonding dialogues between mother and daughter, and a walk through the mountains that makes me feel as fatigued as them, mostly because I have PTSD over that kind of experience. And to cap it off, dragon reveal!! So this is how dragons look like in this universe.
3. Drawn to the fire: In the end, it wasn't about the other titulars at all, it was all about this dual rivalry. Nice battle of wits, a little heavy for this being only chapter 7. But the final result came as a surprise so I won't complain too much.
4. Ichi the Witch: It was all very weird until the secret was revealed. It was clear that either something was off or I missed a chapter in between, glad it was the first option. But now she exposed herself, while she could have remained hidden and scheming, letting Amadoro to be a sacrificial lamb.
5. Akane-banashi: Transitional chapter where not much happens, but it focuses on one point I am making since a few weeks ago: How can Kaisei top what Akane just did? Actually, it's uncommon for the main character to go first and then watch their rival trying to best them; even in this series she is the last performer more often than not. So what to expect from this unusual dynamic?
6. Roku's house of oddities: A nice chapter also this week, the series truly has found its footing. Curse #4 and #5 still didn't get their dedicated slot, I hope that they will do something at some point or the others will monopolize the show.
7. Sakamoto Days: Sorry, but even if the most prestigious Order members are hyping him, I don't buy this Tanabata guy at all. Those who have the most gimmicky powers are always the ones with the weakest points.
8. Me and Roboco: Thanks Roboco for the fashion tips! Was it a parody of Hima-Ten? Who cares, by the end it was a parody of basically everything.
9. Kagurabachi: All the plans that every side is concocting are crazy, and they are there basically to show that in this world, everyone is insane. The only sane man appears to be the swordsmith that nobody wants to listen. This will not end well.
10. Blue Box: I read it a little distracted at first, because these inspirational chapters are starting to look all the same. But actually, Chinatsu dropped a bomb in the middle of that. This is either endgame or an unexpected new arc.
11. Nue's Exorcist: I was just thinking that for a training in this series it seemed too normal, and Nue procedes to hint at an unconventional alternative. You can see that the situation is so serious anyway because they don't do harem shenanigans anymore in these training arcs.
12. One Piece: Ahahah, "flashback within a flashback" is now a trademark in One Piece. And always in a situation where they should hurry up instead of telling the stories of their life. And this time, for a character that didn't actually need more backstory than what he already had. I somehow respect Oda for doing whatever the hell he pleases with his story.
13. Under Doctor: After all those enjoyable chapters, it returns to an action plot (and it has to, otherwise the plot would never move forward) but it doesn't work. The new character lost any sympathy during his introduction scene, and the story behind their quest isn't that original. For a positive, I liked Cameroon as an unusual setting for the arc.
14. Witch Watch: A card game domain expansion at this stage is killing the fighting mood, but at least I am having fun at Ban not having a playing brain at all. These dynamics are very similar to when I play boardgames with my friends.
15. Class 2-B: heavy destroyerz: After the good effort of last week, I found this chapter a little lazy (pun not intended), but surely the change of scenery is helping the series overall. The poop jokes disappeared, and I am learning how to review it without comparing it with Gintama everyti...what the hell a Gintoki palette swap just debuted?
16. Someone Hertz: Since it's always on the top spots of the ToC, having to read this slow paced series early on usually kills my momentum. Having to read it first might be not bad, since I can now read all the other chapters in rapid succession. The chapter itself is ok, sometimes I forget that all these people stay awake at late night for MonMid. "This cicada was a human in its past life. How can you tell?" "It buzzes only from 8AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday".
17. Kinato's Magic: Despite being pretty funny at certain points (like the village chief wanting to spar with Kinato and him just saying "no thanks"), I can't gloss over the fact that this is simply an Amazon Lily ripoff. I get that famous mangas can have an influence on the work of the youngest authors, but it shouldn't be so blatant.
18. Shinobi Undercover: I don't understand why he had to come all aggressive and attack everyone before presenting a simple request of attending a meeting. I get that it is a chance to debut a new character and his powers, but why making an enemy out of everyone? And actually, wasn't that a task for some officer or an operator instead of a full-fledged ninja?
19. Alien Headbutt: It's a pity because even if the axe was inevitable, it came so early that the author didn't even have the time to plan the final match as he wanted, and instead he had to rush it for an unsatisfactory result. The series overall was experimental, he did good in trying but Jump is probably not the audience to try to impress with this kind of work.
20. Hima-Ten!: I suppose we are at the final act, with 2-3 chapters left to go. In those chapters they will have to cover Kanai's reaction to all this, poor girl lost all of her chances. If she made her move just two months before she would have accomplished her goal (but the series would have ended way earlier).

Sadly him getting rejected makes complete sense in-universe. His proposal is to let a complete nobody make magical nukes because he has a "good eye". The other plan, while cruel, has guarantees and political benefits. Definitely shows that no one here is a hero.

During Golden Week, I made a house to live in with Skiploom and a radio station where Rotom can live!

Ichi the Witch (Osamu Nishi)

Never trust your heels. Sandals will give you blisters.

One Piece (Eiichiro Oda)

I went to see a Tokyo 03 show! I could watch these three guys forever. I love the stuff about their daily life—it cracks me up so much.

Akane-banashi (Takamasa Moue)

The World Cup is about to begin! If the players are saying it, then so will I! I believe we’ll win it all! Vamos!

Shinobi Undercover (Santa Mitarashi)

After living for more than 20 years, I learned that you shouldn’t use a song you like for your alarm clock.

Witch Watch (Kenta Shinohara)

I watch the flower shop sketch from Jarujaru-san and Yuumi Kawai-san at least once every other month.

I’m so happy Yuito Suzuki made the World Cup team! I’ll be wearing #23 from the Shimizu era and cheering hard!

I celebrated too soon for the Victoria Mile. My holler to my staff—“We’ll have sushi tonight!”—totally went down the drain.

There’s a curry I’ve been avoiding because it makes me sleepy, but I had it for the first time in a while and felt great and fell asleep.

Hima-Ten! (Genki Ono)

It’s getting so warm and comfortable. I hope this weather continues forever!

I’m late with this, but I spent the week off fishing like crazy on the islands off Nagasaki. I caught firefly squid in Toyama and ate sushi!

Kagurabachi (Takeru Hokazono)

Unagerorin’s Sakuragaoka High School Girls’ Volleyball Club made me laugh so hard that I had to stop working for about ten minutes.

Nue's Exorcist (Kota Kawae)

Thank you to everyone who read till the very end. And I’m so sorry.

I wish we got digital sales numbers. With how high Nue's twitter mentions always are, and how online the fanbase is in Japan, I have no doubt that it dwarfs a lot of its rivals in age. Sans Kagurabachi.

Also, not Jump, but everyone should check out Ura Tokyo from WSM. Newbie mangaka I believe and they wear their influences on their sleeves (including Jump series like HxH), but it's so good. Love the characters, the artwork, the world-building. Not even a volume and a half in and already has such a strong cast. I have a feeling it's going to be WSM's next juggernaut.
