Do you think Kinato will survive another round? Also, I'm curious what the JP reception to the sales are?

Most people don't follow Shoseki so they don't know about it, the ones that knows are saying that Kinato is doing much better than expected.

About surviving, it's all about how it will perform in the ToC for now, if still get stuck in the bottom it will very likely get axed next one unless Jump wants to only start 1 new series and manage to end something or Drawn to the Fire is a huge flop and etc.

So far Under Doctor is just exploring the setting to see what works best. It hasn't settled on a direction yet because nothing's been ranked especially well.

Some series take a while to find their feet, Yozakura took an entire year of screwing around with one-offs and different kinds of content before it finally figured out what readers really liked. The question of course is if Under Doctor will be allowed to continue until it can potentially find that route to higher ToC.
It’s a great point; I just have a lot of trouble envisioning how he can make long arcs. That’s why I think he should’ve done a fantasy world like Toriko where haiji could hunt for materials and ingredients. It have been real cool used real life diseases allegorically for fantasy diseases.
While I agree with @tirakai, I do think that this exploration is a privilege for just a few manga. UD has not proven, IMO, to be worthy of such a leeway.

I got the impression that UD was going to focus on the doctor's past, given that, as far as I remember, his father appeared in a flashback, where we got a glimpse of what/how was his upbringing. Then, there was that Maxwell guy plot, that might have guided the manga towards a plot around extraordinary people (i.e. with gifts like Maxwell's body, the Doc's eyes, etc).

Building on what @Shonenfan has mentioned, I think the easiest route was just a Sakamoto 2.0. UD could have had almost the same kind of plot: have an assassin/underground organization running amok, and UD and buddies trying to solve the mess. But it's too soon for it, of course.

But in general, what makes it hard for it to really find a direction is simply the premise.

I don't know what is exactly hard to understand about Under Doctor, it's a series about a doctor that works in the underworld, mafia and stuff alongside being a regular doctor too, the series was described from the very start as a underworld medical battle shounen and it has been pretty much that so far with the occasional heartwarming chapters in the "normal" world, opinions about what is better or not are matter of personal preference.

I didn’t think I’d see 2 new Jump games announced in the Nintendo Direct, and both of them are sprite based. Neither ONE PIECE nor Jujutsu Kaisen are my cup of tea, but maybe the solution to our lack of Jump games is going 2D!

I think the confounding/exciting thing is just how can it build story arcs. I’ve never read super doctor K so I’m not well versed in what long form story telling with a doctor fighter can look like, but the longest arc we’ve gotten wasn’t even an arc; it was just a long fight with Adam and frankly Tanmoto didn’t exactly blow me away with his story telling via choreography or artwork during fighting, which I think was a common sentiment for most in here. It’s one thing when Suzuki and SD kind of has an aimless barebones plot nearly every arc because his eye for action and drawing of choreography is some of the best among all mangaka, but Tanimoto doesn’t have anywhere near that juice yet.

He does the emotion part real well but I’m very curious to see if and how he can build varied story arcs without repeating the same formula of “a person is sick, someone comes in to attack, Haiji fights them off.” He’s either got to start building long form story out or up his Suzuki style “rule of cool and treat for the eyes” choreography. I guess a third option is more one shot style but I don’t know if that’s really viable in Jump.

I'm 100% confident that being an early Sakamoto-Days style underworld battle shounen with one-off comedy and emotional side chapters between arcs was the initial intended direction of Under Doctor. It's probably how it was pitched, trying to capture what Sakamoto Days did as that series heads towards its finale.

The problem with that is the fighting parts have not been well received at all in the ToC, hence it's having to fiddle about attempting other directions to see if anything else works. We'll see in a couple more issues if that's had any effect, once it's done ranking the fight against the strong body guy.

No offense, but whenever I see this argument, it genuinely feels like an admission of a lacking creativity. There's so many directions it can go, and potential for long-form arcs.

It's cool to see how much unanimous love Roku is getting here.
Tbh though, I'm shocked at how low we rated Ruri Dragon last week. I thought it was such a great chapter, and possibly set up a real change in direction for the series.

I think a turn based strategy RPG with Jump characters could be so rad.
As much as I'd love a traditional JRPG, even if you had 6 party members, so many of them would end up not getting used. With an SRPG, so many characters would get to shine, and you'd have so much more freedom with how you craft your party and strategies.

I read the emergency Kagurabachi replacement oneshot this week (Yao), it made me laugh.

It's an exorcist series where, in order to exorcise ayakashi, they do long chants to summon ayakashi they're contracted to, but the MC is Gen Z so his attention span is too poor to bother finishing the chants and he just beats the monsters up instead.

I don't see how it could work as a series, but it's a funny oneshot concept. Feels like he could make for an entertaining side character in another series, rather than being the MC.

Japanese Direct had one of these Prince of Tennis visual novels. This one was already announced before, but at least it was 3 Jump games in a single Nintendo Direct. They should go all in on variety.

I have a idea that will hopefully start some fun discussions (so we can move on a bit from this scalping scandal that has lasted pages lol). I am currently caught up on 7 series in the magazine:

One Piece
Hunter x Hunter
Sakamoto Days
Akane-banashi
Kagurabachi
Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
Ichi the Witch

What are you all caught up on in the magazine? Feel free, in fact, please do make a tier list if you’d like! I would make one myself but tbh I don’t really think I have any hierarchy outside of my favs being OP and HxH lol
I read everything in the magazine since I enjoy following the discussions here, though some are definitely just for the sake of being completionist.

Must reads (not in order, because that depends on my mood):
Shinobi
Kiyoshi
Ichi
KGB
WW (right now anyway. It was in the lowest category when it was doing random silly stuff)
UD
Roku
Drawn
(most newbies go here for a while)

I'll read it, though it doesn't have to be straight away:
OP
Akane
Nue

I'm just waiting for it to end:
Sakamoto
BB
Himaten
Kinato

I skim it so I can understand the comments, but I would've dropped it otherwise:
Roboco
Hertz
Destroyerz

Chapters from this week (I'll do all of them for a change)

Votes:
1) Shinobi
2) Kiyoshi
3) UD
4) Animal Signal
5) WW

Animal Signal:
- So it's another demon hunter story with a secret agency. Not what I was expecting from the colour pages.
- Yeah, that's not how echolocation works. Should've picked an animal that can detect electric currents, like a shark.
- So is this whole series just gonna be 90% animal facts?
- Well, that solves the need for character development. I guess Tsutsui got bored of characters keeping secrets from each other.
- Good on her for being self-aware, at least. Too bad it hasn't translated in acting mature yet.

I'm not completely convinced. I love animals and I love detective stories, but both feel a little half-baked here. The characters aren't doing much for me either, we barely know anything about the boy and the girl is overbearing. This can change, of course, but my first impression is mixed.

Shinobi: Lots of lore, and some interesting new characters. Of course he wasn't just going to accept that, they really haven't done their research if they thought he would. The glasses are a bit much though.

Kiyoshi: Cute. But, uh... shouldn't you ask Kiyoshi first? Hiring people for very important government functions without informing them sounds like a recipe for disaster. Especially with a guy who's more spooked by paperwork than by demon lords.

UD: After the heartwarming stories, this got pretty dark. We definitely have a set-up for a longer arc now, though it's unsure if it will come into play straight away.

Animal Signal

WW:
I'm impressed he tried fighting that at all. And that the floor didn't cave sooner. I wonder how long Gambit will insist on continuing the game when the room is collapsing around them.

Ichi: So it really is like Bleach... except worse, because she spills the beans right in front of them and they don't even react. Anyone know who the water lady is?

Nue: She's totally going to claim this was her plan all along.

Roku: These people are more gullible easy-going than I expected. It's not bad, but the chapters with the whole group have been the funniest to me so far.

Drawn: So they are aware of their weaknesses. But there sure are a lot of stories about little guys playing tall guy sports, huh? Kinda makes me want to see the opposite. At least their recruiting practices are different, because it seems like 'annoy potential talents until they cave and join the team' is the official strategy now.

Akane: Smart of him to change it up. But with chapters like this, it always feel like we're getting so little story. (I'm sure it's better in the volumes, but it makes everything very slow when you're reading weekly.)

Kinato: I thought the sudden wedding doves were strange. Her mother forgot to teach her some rather important stuff if she has to rely on Jien for that. Which (again) begs the question people have been asking: how do they reproduce if they barely know what a man is?

Himaten: So either we get a last minute surprise twist, or we know the outcome. But no 'final chapter' announcement yet (or do they not do that for series of this length?)

Hertz: When do these kids sleep? The new wannabe boyfriend is the most relatable character to me so far.

BB: Another 'it feels like it's wrapping up, but it could actually go on for another year at this rate' chapter. I wonder how long beforehand we will know if this one is ending.

Destroyerz: Um... kudos for originality? Some of the jokes are quite inventive. They just don't make me laugh.

Roboco: Same here. Very creative, not funny.

Sakamoto: That was weird.
