While I agree with @tirakai, I do think that this exploration is a privilege for just a few manga. UD has not proven, IMO, to be worthy of such a leeway.

I got the impression that UD was going to focus on the doctor's past, given that, as far as I remember, his father appeared in a flashback, where we got a glimpse of what/how was his upbringing. Then, there was that Maxwell guy plot, that might have guided the manga towards a plot around extraordinary people (i.e. with gifts like Maxwell's body, the Doc's eyes, etc).

Building on what @Shonenfan has mentioned, I think the easiest route was just a Sakamoto 2.0. UD could have had almost the same kind of plot: have an assassin/underground organization running amok, and UD and buddies trying to solve the mess. But it's too soon for it, of course.

But in general, what makes it hard for it to really find a direction is simply the premise.
but i think this is what UD will talk about, the last two chapters focused on a secret organization that tests on children to find some sort of immortality, tissue explains why Maxwell was like that, he probably was a "failed" test or something

Animal Signal 1st chapter reached 84k views in its first 24h on Jump+ app, which is a pretty decent result, a bit more than Syd Craft (80k) and basically tied with Harukaze Mound (83k) both which sold decently in their 1st volume and survived 28 & 30 chapters, this alongside the pretty positive reception on JP Forums paints a optmistic scenario for the manga so far 👍

Issue 28 2026 (Nue HARD carry):

1. Nue's Exorcist: ...Wow. I just- WOW. "Bombshell" doesn't even come CLOSE to describing this chapter. We no longer have a titular "Nue's Exorcist" anymore.
This moment had to come eventually. Some kind of REAL conflict between Gakuro and Nue, and it stemmed from Nue's FEARS. She is making a rational decision, for how devastating it may be emotionally, but only on paper. Even if she gets rid of Kasha and Kurikara at the same time, who goes on to fight Gashadokuro and Raisei after? Is she just hoping that the Bureau can take care of that with her gone?
Gakuro has NEVER been this emotionally destroyed since... Before the series stsrted. Look at his expressions throughout the chapter, his fear, his shock, his borderline disgust, it's so brilliantly illustrated. And the worst part, for a moment, there was NOBODY on his side. We don't know what happened with Squad 6 that made them stand aside- nothing good at least, you can tell from their expressions, either uneasy or furious. And Igari FINALLY acknowledging Gakuro and his accomplishments, all during his lowest period in this whole mission.
He has just lost everything- his powers, his squad, soon he will even lose Nue herself to her own plan. And speaking of Nue, her behaviour at the start of this chapter and end of the last have now heartbreaking context- it was the last moment of whimsy she could have had with her precious contractor, her pupil, the Messiah who has managed to do the impossible over and over and got her the absolute furthest in defeating the Hyo anyone has ever had. And yet she left him, and who can blame her after that disastrous battle with Kasha? Gekka got incapacitated, she almost DIED even, Gakuro could have easily met the same fate, and now Kasha's only getting stronger and stronger. He has put such fear into her that she is willingly abandoning her own life for the mission... Saying goodbye to humanity. Such a devastating sequence of events...
And the one after shows why Gakuro is such an INCREDIBLE character. Immediately he searches for Nue after waking up (and his body was a mess, who knows how much stress Nue's power and all the training actually put on him) before Kathy (AKA the GOAT) explains Nue's plan. In his eyes, he has yet to save a single person. He did not truly save even one, not Rido, Mizuki, Lil Kyoko, anyone from his Squad, and whatever he did was just Nue pulling him along, like a puppet. He does not recognize his own importance... And this is why he must act now more than ever. Anlock his OWN potential, grow stronger with HIS power and nobody else. Only this way he can become the Strongest Warrior, and save everyone. God this page is so fucking incredible I have read this chapter 5-6 times already and it always gets me hyped to all hell.
This is what makes this chapter what it is: it's a new start. Not for Nue's Exorcist, but for Gakuro Yajima. So many callbacks to chapter 1 demonstrate this, the Strongest Warrior page, the "Even you, Nue!" Panel referencing the double spread- The only difference? He stands up in both moments now, on his own, no longer kneeling before Nue or anyone else.
This is the epitome of his character, and the ode to human spirit that it is. And it is all capped off with possibly the, at least personally, most awaited page in the whole series- Gakuro wanting to uncover the Yajima Family's secret, and his own origins proper. This is something that has been foreshadowed over and over throughout the story, but never fully tackled due to Gakuro's neglet of himself in favour of the mission and the tight time constraints. But now, he has no other options. He must explore whatever secret that Takuro and the Yajima bloodline have been keeping, dark as it may be. The classification of the family land being "CLASS 1 SPIRIT CONTAMINATED REGION" makes me me think it will be REALLY dark, but I was expecting it to be. And in all of this, Gakuro is aided by the coolest grandpa in manga! I love Sumeragi, dude.
Kawae has put to paper the most simultaneously heart wrenching (from a character's standpoint) yet satisfying (from a long time reader's) chapter yet. I knew he always had these plans, but nobody outside the fandom seems to see that- well now these folks are objectively wrong! I cannot, and I seriously mean, CANNOT wait to delve into the Yajima mystery. Not even scoring this shit, it speaks VOLUMES for itself.
SAVE EVERYONE, EVEN NUE, GAKURO YAJIMA!!

2. Someone Hertz: One of the more "spokon-like" chapters of the series. It feels like it did back with the Koshien and it's great. Without Eel Potato around, Mimei can show off his true skill: SPAMMING! He has found the power of rapid fire jokes to use for future live submissions, and for the first time he prevailed over others in a Mon-Mid competition- by quite the margin too, Rei didn't even come second. Kurage's cool head is shown to be crumbling a bit as her best friend (read: boyfriend) feels ever closer to her humor level. Just a great and satisfying chapter.

3. Ichi The Witch: Fujimine carrying the arc for the time being, so much so the series is back into the top 3- Hurray! I guess. Anyways, the Tsukushima-like threat she poses, even though it's on a timer like Chun explained, is always a good tool for tension. It is foundamentally terrifying to have strong allies turn on you, and even more so for you to be under the effect of mind control like this. I do wonder what role Magikeepers will serve after this arc, given how instrumental Fujimine is to the one they have now, but good drama nonetheless. And it's likely one of the top witches saving him at the end there, which is great, they've gotten shafted for way too long.

4. Animal Signal: Quite the adorable start! Tsutsui's cute designs do not disappoint, and this concept for a world is pretty creative, though there are obviously some creative liberties taken with the Anima. I am very open to learning about a bunch of animal facts if they keep being presented in such a fun way! That said, I am not really sure how the series may go from here besides an episodic format, but we'll see (if it survives).

5. Roku's House Of Oddities: A simpler, less deep and complex chapter compared to the previous few, but still an entertaining one. Gevaudan is really cute whenever he goes into his "chibi" version, and the "Dog is way too big" joke is getting used so much so quickly that it rounds back to being funny ironically enough. But most importantly... YOUNG MAN!!

6. Kinato's Magic: Honestly, one of the best chapters in the series, low as that bar may be. We saw more into the personal history of Terasu and the Majo, as well as the start of the festival. The art is as good as always, never doubting Amemiya on that regard. I'd love for the whole series to be on this level.

7. Class 2B Hero Destroyerz: Some needed worldbuilding, stupid as it may be. The jokes overall are just alright this week, more poop is whatever, but Vinelexa actually got me. Otherwise an OK chapter.

8. Drawn To The Fire: Can we see Tachibana again? Genuinely, I do not care about Kuchikusa at all right now. It's just Keiki, Natsu, and now this dude Keiki knows. Everyone else are just background characters and that's. Even Keiki and Natsu's dynamic feels weaker right now.

9. Under Doctor: ...Um, what? We just went and speedran this entire plotpoint. We basically dropped the "I can't let them know I'm Haiji!" Thing right away, finished the infiltration, found the children, got a bit of info, everything exploded, and now we are back home. It's like we went through 3 chapters all at once. I get that this is supposed to be buildup to a longer arc but christ, even the one good page here with the children on the bed did not hit nearly as well as it could have because of the lack of actual buildup.

No offense, but whenever I see this argument, it genuinely feels like an admission of a lacking creativity. There's so many directions it can go, and potential for long-form arcs.
I’m curious on any routes you’re thinking!

Ichi: So it really is like Bleach... except worse, because she spills the beans right in front of them and they don't even react. Anyone know who the water lady is?
I didn't know straight away either because she's barely appeared so far, but the water lady is apparently the older looking witch with scars on her face lol. I saw on some discussions that she's been seen (once) with that umbrella + she appears to be the younger witch in the Fujimine flashback when she takes the Toxic Majik.

Which means Fujimine is old as hell too, which makes sense since it was said the Magikeepers have been going after her "for generations". She probably uses something with her Toxic abilities to stay young/young looking etc. either that or the water witch is aged up due to toxins, but that seems less likely.

I’m glad I’ve been seeing other people say this, because I felt insane the other day when people were praising the chapter. This is such a baffling “arc”, and falling back on “oh but it’s just setup for more things to come”, does not really fix any of my complaints with it. Last chapter felt fairly well paced, and for this chapter to contain all of the rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion just leaves it feeling bad. I’m really confused on why he would write it the way he did.

Yeah one of the characters receives like the exact same scars that she has, I know a few people have been waiting for her to show up.

I have a idea that will hopefully start some fun discussions (so we can move on a bit from this scalping scandal that has lasted pages lol). I am currently caught up on 7 series in the magazine:

One Piece
Hunter x Hunter
Sakamoto Days
Akane-banashi
Kagurabachi
Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
Ichi the Witch

What are you all caught up on in the magazine? Feel free, in fact, please do make a tier list if you’d like! I would make one myself but tbh I don’t really think I have any hierarchy outside of my favs being OP and HxH lol
I am caught up on 12 of the current Jump series. As I have stated many times before I feel this is one of the weakest iterations of Weekly Shonen Jump I have been party to reading but to be fair I do not read many of the longer running series in Jump and my opinion might be a bit skewed by reading mainly series that are not living long in the pages of the Magazine. With the addition of 3 new series, I will be up to 14 of 21.

God Tier:
1. One Piece - The main reason I still read Weekly Shonen Jump. I feel like this series continues to do the heavy lifting. It is the Pillar of WSJ and holds the magazine up, allowing other authors to get some visibility. I was originally a OP hater. For years I asked how can this childish series be ranked so high? In 2011 I gave OP a try and quickly realized what so many others already knew.

Good Tier:
2. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi - I've enjoyed this series from the start. Feels like a Shonen type of Shonen and something that definitely belongs in the pages of Jump. Not sure why so many around here are always doom-posting about it, since it does what you would want a battle shonen to do. The plot is interesting enough, but the characters are what carry this series for me.
3. Ichi the Witch - The Jump series that has grown the most on me. I started as an Ichi hater, I really disliked the early portion, after an amazing first chapter. It really started improving for me shortly after Gokuraku's introduction.
4. Kinato's Magic - My absolute favorite of this batch. It's just a shonen shonen and isn't trying to be anything different. It certainly isn't trying to reinvent the shonen wheel. I really like the characters, their designs and the way they interact.

Decent Tier:
5. Kagurabachi - I binge read 70 some chapters of this series as I has originally stopped at chapter 3. I feel the series is overhyped. To be over 100 chapters the series hasn't produced enough decent characters. The plot in part 1 was meh and the art is wonky, with character looking putrid more often than not. The fight choreography is good but not enough to make up for all the other flaws and bland character work.
6. Roku's House of Oddities - I was not a fan of this right out of the gate and wouldn't call myself a fan just yet. That being said the last few chapters have been an improvement and I have found them rather enjoyable.

7. Someone Hertz - This series just isn't for me. I feel nothing when reading it.
8. Shinobi Undercover - While it is a shonen shonen like Kiyoshi and Kinato, there is just something missing. The characters are so one note and barebones they do not drive the series. The plot involving Aoi feels like Kindergarten Wars

Bad Tier (I would Axe):
9. Under Doctor - The scenery art (buildings and such) is probably the best thing about this manga imo. The character designs and their interactions are lacking severely. The overuse of white background instead of filling in the backgrounds also doesn't help. The plot has been pretty much non-existent until chapter 18. If this got axed in the next batch, I wouldn't even be mad.
10. Drawn to the Fire - I spoke my peace a few days ago. I have multiple issues with this series. I wish we still had Harukaze Mound over this series.
11. Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz - the toilet humor is......for lack of a better word......shit. The characters are meh and while the plot could be interesting the first 2 points outweighs the potential plot enjoyment. Last chapter toned down the bathroom jokes and I actually liked it; this week's chapter went too far to make up for the lack in the previous chapter.
12. Alien Headbutt - It was bad from start to finish. Bad plot, characters, and character interactions. Everything felt forced and rushed and that final fight was garbage.

Series I started but have not caught up on:
1. Ruri Dragon
- I have really liked the first 9 chapters of Ruri. I need to take the time to catch up as I do enjoy reading it.
2. Akane-banashi - A really strong first chapter and I've seen nothing but praises for the series. I just have not dedicated the time to catching up on this series quite yet.
3. Witch Watch - I read the first chapter, and I am like 6 episodes into the anime. A cute fun little series thus far. I enjoy the character dynamics very much to this point.
4. Nue Exorcist - It took me 3 or 4 good tires to get through the first chapter. That isn't usually a good sign for series with me. Under Doctor and Star of Beethoven come to mind as series that took me multiple tries to make it through the first chapter. I am not a fan of either of these series and believe that Star of Beethoven was one the worst manga to grace Jumps pages, so Nue is not keeping good company in this regard. I am currently 3 chapters in and have no real drive to continue or get caught up quickly.

I am still convinced Toxiterror Majik is actually evil and has been controlling the real Fujimine all along for decades. Fujimine has the exact same black pupils as the controlled people.

I cannot imagine World Hater will be so chummy with another human. So, it must be Toxiterror majik all along

Hmm at the top of my head, Haiji discovers a possible cure for his friends illness, however the chemical ingredient needed to be synthesized for this cure is also being used in a new bio-weapon being developed by the big bad organization and so he to decide on whether to destroy the big bads supply, as well as give up on synthesizing it on his own in order to prevent another group from ever gaining access to it in order to save more human lives than just the rare few affected by this disease.

Some major arc, akin to the manga Myther, where a pharmaceutical company is working on a drug that basically rewrites the recipients psyche with another personality, coded to do the will of the pharm comp. Haiji having to fight innocent people under the influence of said experimental prescription.

More victims of the same experimentation Maxwell was a victim of. With different types of abilities. Opens the door to more fighting, some of the combatants who genuinely want to fight, and some who feel they have no choice. Turns out it's the Japanese government themselves behind these human experiments (ala Unit 731)

As a result of meddling in the affairs of various world governments, Haiji is pushed to stand down or have his medical license stripped. He obviously doesn't and goes on the run.

Just so many opportunities for various stories based off medical and national government conspiracies as it relates to the medical field.

Plus there's all the stuff with Haiji's assassin past and the characters that will likely show back up to drag him back to that life, seeing him as some sort of traitor.

Theory: The final boss of One Piece isn't Imu or Blackbeard, but Shanks. Shanks is the last member of the original Four Emperors, and fighting Luffy would be a passing of the torch.

My extended OP prediction is after this arc, we get a post arc where we discover BB deployed a distraction attack on mariejoa so he could kidnap shirahoshi (the only way to access FI would be near Mariejoa and he’s likely being monitored so he can distract the monitors). I think he also sent a unit to Wano that gets defeated but Yamato sneaks on the ship that’s retreating back to hachinosu after hearing BB is targeting Luffy to get his fruit. Once BB gets back, he’ll find shanks waiting for him (shanks loses). While all this happens, Morgans and Dragon meet as both come to see the attack on mariejoa. Morgans hands off Vivi to dragon. Buggy sets course to attack BB (buggy has to go to hachinosu bc it’s where Cpt. John’s treasure is).

Oda basically said we’re going to lodestar next, so the SH go there to meet hinokizu. One of two things happen, the SH either go to hachinosu or Hachinosu crawls its way to Lodestar. Either way, SH, CG, and BB all fight each other in a battle royale. BB likely messes up croc (we get his secret then too) and Luffy overpowers but doesn’t beat aokiji (hands him off to Sanji who finishes him). Zoro fights and beats Mihawk here and luffy beats BB and then buggy (buggy has to be the last challenge to the PK seat).

Post arc dragon and vivi arrive, Loki and shirahoshi become a couple. SH go to laugh tale, learn the true history and then fight the final final battle which is that luffy likely attacks new marineford but hands off the akainu fight to sabo. Luffy goes directly at imu, but imu overpowers luffy and knocks him off the red line back to new MF. Luffy helps sabo beat akainu and learns a new skill. Luffy actually does the fisher tiger feat and climbs the red line to return and beat imu. Epilogue.

Blackbeard will kill Shanks while Luffy in Elbaf Oda already confirmed they'll fight in 2023 Jump Festa message. And Blackbeard be waiting for Imu in the Flower Room after Luffy sends him packing from Elbaf.

My ranking of Issue #28 2026

1st - Nue's Exorcist #148
2nd - Animal Signal #1
3rd - Hima-Ten! #93
4th - Shinobi Undercover #84
5th - Someone Hertz #36
6th - Roku's House of Oddities #9
7th - Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz #7
8th - Under Doctor #19
9th - Ichi the Witch #85
10th - Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi #95
11th - Kinato's Magic #18
12th - Drawn to the Fire #8

Unusual thing, I read Jump in time and not the next Sunday as I always do. What an improvement!
It was a great issue!!
Nue's Exorcist was INCREDIBLE. Best chapter of the series. That was HUGE and I'm extremely hyped for what will happen next. Loved it. Comfort me in the idea that it's the best manga in the mag rn (excluding HxH my beloved and things that I don't read).
Hima-Ten is probably ending in the next 3-4 chapters at most. And it's doing well. I'll probably reread it fully volume by volume after that, but this chapter was also great.
Shinobi Undercover is hyping me! This is the kind of things that I like. I love when we go with Yodaka weird shenanigans. And I hope we will finally see more lore. Yep, could be a nice arc.
Someone Hertz is so fun. This chapter was cute.
Same for Roku actually. It's pretty amazing at humour, every character is great and this chapter was too big. Wait, no, I want more!
Class 2-B finished its first volume. And overall, with this chapter as a closure, it's good. We get more lore every chapter and it's always pretty funny. I think unc definitely still got it.
Under Doctor... is rushing..? I'm kinda confused. This chapter could've been 2 or 3 chapters. I mean, it still works like that, but it feels a bit rushed and weird. However, I'm glad it's pretty safe. I still love Haiji and I like the whole set-up. This chapter was just kinda weird. Not bad tho.
Ichi was good this week.
Kiyoshi is always kinda underwhelming between arcs. It's still pretty fun.
Kinato... Yeah, it's pretty bad. Since a bit actually. It has great art and everything but.. idk, there's something wrong. And this chapter was.. bruh
Drawn to the Fire is just not my kind of things, I guess. I liked the ragebait at the end. That was very fun and I finally cared about the characters. Was not bad overall.

And finally... Animal Signal. My 2nd this week, so yall can guess I loved it.
It's definitely my kind of things. We got a nice set-up, MHA-like but animals, it's pretty cool. I liked a lot both Kokone and Tsubasa. Tsubasa is like super sweet, I already love him. And Kokone was also a really fun character. 22i delivered good art as always. Overall, it was a great first chapter, worked for me. I can see it succeed if it keeps this vibe. Now, I don't know where the next chapter will go. Probably something like "a chapter a new Anima" until it finds its foot. But I'm already sold. Hyped for next week!

(also hyped for hal formula eheh)

So I have been wanting to read more series and I got caught up to Under Doctor and Someone Hertz. I am interested in reading either Roku or Class 2B next. Can someone more in tune with the JP reception side of things give me an idea on their chances of survival? I know it’s kinda hard to know for sure this early, but I’m asking based on J+ views/overall online engagement. I’m assuming 2B will get at least one round of survival because of Gorilla

Way too early to tell. Roku’s ToC placing has been pretty good which is a good indicator of long term viability; comments mild but positive commentary I believe. 2B is something we’ll get a good indicator of tonight on its first ToC placement. It’s been getting skewered a lot online for the toilet humor, but that was before the twist. Shinuki would know what the current chatter is but I think reception has improved on it a bit.

I think that for next issue, outside the lead color page being for canon masters and one of the color pages being for Hal Formula, I think we get ourselves the likes of Nue, ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi and either a kinato magic, Roku or Class 2-B: Hero Destroyerz color page.
