Issue 31:

Cannon Master
Still serviceable, we get more of the Divine Beasts and the world, nothing exactly that we didn't learn the first chapter. It's good how we get more of Bharat skills and him actually teaching Ur something useful in how they have to fight protecting the city instead of just blasting the strongest attack possible... of course, this lesson may be pretty much ignored next chapter if Ur actually saves the day with brute force. Hope that's not it.

Votes:

1. Hunter x Hunter

I deeply missed all this text and I'm being serious. I will complain when something flat can't pass its simple ideas quickly, but Hunter x Hunter earned my attention and I know when Togashi is going somehwere, so taking a long time slowly eating a Hunter x Hunter chapter is one of these rare pleasures of life, nothing else is like it.

About the chapter itself, we're back into class with Kurapika and we get a bit of everything. Hidden agendas, politics, how the nen works for the Succession Contest (didn't we know this already? Or maybe it was just too obvious) and end with that last line. Our hero is actually instigating the fights, but building a wall to protect who he cares about. This would be weird for many other protagonists, but Kurapika's journey is one about choosing what he values the most instead of being some sort of hero.

Great comeback, I can't wait to see where we're going with so many different threads to pull.

2. Nue's Exorcist

Gakuroless chapter! I love our main guy, but sometimes it's nice to let everyone else shine and this time the spotlight is on Nue as a fighter instead of a mentor and she does look great like that.

The battle isn't going as I expected as it seems like she has the upper hand against unprepared Kasha, but we all know things won't be that easy, right? I'm glad we finally get a battle with the captains, but I'm expecting them all to job because this is the story about Nue's fear clouding her decisions, so she can't be right in her approach. Next week should be even more interesting.

3. Animal Signal

If a significant part of this manga is basically "situation that forces Kokone to be even cuter than usual", I can confirm this already as one of my favorites because it's really good at both being cute and having fun with the setting and concept. Tsutsui's art continues being amazing and I love how we casually get animas like the catfish making predictions for the agency.

4. Someone Hertz

I think most people reading this are able to predict from the start of the chapter that they would end up going there and meeting each other. And that was the right choice and what made the whole chapter cute. This is a manga that knows when it's right to play the tropes straight and how to show the influence they have on each other.

5. Roboco

Pretty funny bit with the escalation.

As for Himaten, I'll just remember all the other weeks I enjoyed of this and say nothing about the ending. Hal Formula is alright, but I want it to move from feeling like a long intro.

interrupting my read to announce how annoyed I am by the John Werry level of terrorism in Animal Signal today. borderline unreadable of how incorrect it is

THEY'RE VENOMOUS NOT POISONOUS A MAIN CHARACTER OBSESSED WITH ANIMAL FACTS WOULD NEVER GET THIS WRONG AND IT COMPLETELY DESTROYED THE IMMERSION FOR ME

hope this translator gets their shit together

Kagurabachi 12 is now for September, against Kochikame.
Looks like DttF is done; an AH double volume release. SD and Blue Box both ending soon seems to be.

@Shinuki no Reborn sorry if you answered this and I missed it, but what has the reception been for Cannon Master online?

Cannon Master has a bit of an art problem; it is sometimes too hard to see what's happening.

When Hima-ten! first got announced, I had my reservations, but it won me over immediately after the first chapter. One of the things I enjoyed about it was how low stakes it was. I know some people need drama or tension in order to read a series (especially a not battle manga), but for me, one of the draws of the series was the fact I could sit down every week and just relax. My favorite parts of romcoms are the slice of life periods between major developments where the characters just get to showoff their personalities and riff, and that's what Hima-ten! basically was from the rip. I like when characters just get to act like people in stories instead of needing to move towards the next plot point. I get that it didn't really try the "com" part of romcom as much after awhile, but I still got amusement and laughs out of the sound effects and reaction faces every week. It was a series about a high school girl trying to live a normal high school life despite being super successful outside it, and it captured that vibe really well.

The thing I love most about Hima-ten! is how human the series felt. Sure, we got characters that are extremely talented and farther in their fields than the normal high schooler would be, but it was never treated like they were perfect or that these were things that existed solely to build up the background. Himari's struggles to balance being a CEO and a normal high school girl were critical to her character. For better or worse, she never forgot those struggles. Kanna is a rising star in the modelling industry, but she was a girl that just wanted something she could never achieve. She fought and fought until she lost, going through struggles and failure. She never let her growing fame make her deluded from her love problems or used it as a reason for why she should have won. She wasn't sure if she was genuinely talented or relying on one thing to get by in life. A lot of issues never linger for long because these people actually talk to each other about their problems and clear a lot of the air (even if it's not everything). They have realistic conclusions to their inner reflections without pushing it too far into the future to show that they still have issues they want to resolve. You can buy Himari and Kanna being close senpai and kouhai, Himari and Sumire being close friends, see how Tenichi's sister took a shine to Kanna and wanted to support Kanna for Kanna instead of shipping her brother off like in most other shonen romances.

Which is why the ending stretch is flat out terrible. One of the most common critiques of the harem romcom is that it's nothing but wish fulfillment garbage. The "guy who doesn't deserve every girl falling in love with him gets nothing but cute girls fawning over him" insult comes up all the time. This ending is also wish fulfillment garbage. People are always like "the childhood friend never wins!" in romcoms and say that when a romcom does it, it's a unique twist that increases the status of the series. But it doesn't happen often because it's not satisfying. Just because you've known someone the longest doesn't mean you're owed the right to marry them, but that's how most childhood friends in shonen act. Being unable to see a close friend as anything other than a close friend is a real obstacle that has to be overcome for people if they want a relationship (hell, we literally have a good representation of that struggle in this series with Tenichi and Himari). You need to put effort, real effort not just imagining it in your head and pretending like that's progress, in order to change your targeted affection's mind about you. Having every attractive girl fawn over you is obviously a common fantasy, but you know what else is a common fantasy? Having your first crush feel the same way about you just because you wish it. Having your crush accept your feelings because you wrote one (1) letter saying your feelings and using something we didn't know exist beforehand as the basis for why he said yes (a middle school diary is only slightly better than flashbacks to events the reader never knew happened until they're shown). Obviously there's at least one romcom that did the childhood friend winning good, but I promise it was because they put actual effort into developing the relationship and not what Hima-ten! did.

Notice how I didn't bring up Honoka once in my praises for the series? It's because she doesn't belong in any of them. She exists to just be a kind and demure girl. She has no struggles beyond Tenichi, unlike Himari and Kanna. She wouldn't exist as a person if Tenichi wasn't the main character. Her relationship with Himeno felt forced because Mayu wasn't enough to support her with Tenichi, so Honoka needed even more help. Himeno feeling so invested in Honoka did not come off as natural as all. You know who was actually Himeno's natural parallel? Kanna. Both rising star celebrities, that everyone loved, who moved to the beat of their own drum. Himeno was introduced in a Kanna chapter, Kanna is the one who felt threatened by her. Even the last chapter once again compares the two. The only difference, and the thing that made them an actual interesting parallel, is that Kanna is true to her heart and goes for her love while Himeno suppressed it and let it go by to pursue her dreams (both as an idol and now as a teacher). The dynamic is clearly far stronger with Kanna than Honoka, but the plot pushed that aside.

And it's clear why the plot does that: because if you look at what the series does with Himari or Kanna, it has to bend itself over to get to a situation where Honoka isn't massively behind. If you look at its themes and how they all apply to the other two girls way more, they all point to Honoka shouldn't have been the one that Tenichi confesses to. She's not putting in actual effort to make her crush realized. Everything is being handed to her. She literally won because Kanna got written out of the series and Himari gave up because she realized Tenichi's happiness was more important to her than her own. None of it felt deserved. There was never a moment in the series where it felt that Tenichi's feelings for Honoka ever evolved into something more than "childish crush" unlike the other two (which aren't even necessarily "romantic", but it was clear that their relationships with Tenichi evolved vastly from their introduction); it just happens because the second to last chapter says it did. Himari's philosophy is anyone can shine brighter with a little polish, which obviously was meant to be a metaphor for "Honoka could shine brighter, she just needed a push", but the way this last stretch was written wasn't Honoka shining brighter, it was that Kanna and Himari burned out and Honoka's still dull light outlasted them. Honoka's the massive underdog, but the underdog still has to fight for it, not get it because everyone else felt pity.

For the record, Kanna's resolution is fine save for the fact she disappears from the series after getting rejected. She was true to herself, she was lost in love and didn't know what to do to get her crush realized so she used her only weapon (in her opinion), she tried her hardest, sometimes it just doesn't work out the way you want it. Himari's actual conclusion isn't bad in a vacuum. She really values Tenichi and her dream is to help others be able to feel confident in themselves. The entire series she couldn't differentiate between work brain and high school teen brain. So her development at the end is realizing that she wants Tenichi to be with his first crush because he's her best friend and she wants him to be happy from the bottom of her heart, not because her job is to be a dream maker. She's proud of him and how hard he works, so she no longer feels the shackles of having to hide his existence to the world. She doesn't feel pressured to deny the fact he's important to her anymore and wants to show everyone how great he is too. It's at the very least consistent with what her character is. It's when you combine them with Honoka having less than zero character or urgency throughout the series and being rewarded for it that makes this feel so sour. I wish the series got another year because I'm pretty confident that if Ono wrote 50 more chapters, he could have written this in a way that Honoka's victory felt deserved. It didn't happen though so oh well.

I don't want to bitch about Saito fucking this series over because of how he absolutely refused to promote it right now. I get a physical English release for the volumes, it ended with a color page so it's a success in Jump's eyes, there's very little chance the series won't get an anime eventually (and if it doesn't, I still don't care because I have the manga), my love for a series and my worth as a person don't need high sales or everyone to like it to feel validated.

I still love this series very much, bitterness about the ending aside, and I felt the love Ono had for the characters every week. Goodbye Himari, Tenichi, Kanna, and Himeno. Thanks for a great two years. Still one of my favorite Jump romance series.

Thoughts
It might be a sign of my awful taste in manga but Class 2-B has been a ton of fun so far, I hope it can be a success (though that's almost guaranteed with Sorachi)

As I said before, Blue Box has like 2 chapters left after this (if they don't stretch it out even longer); what a way to go out though, Fragrant Flower could never

Himaten is definitely one of the mangas of all time, the plot was written, there were characters, and the art was there as well; In all seriousness, I feel like it was a victim of poor editorial management (from the same editor responsible for Chojo's axe, in fact) leading to a decline in quality after volume 4 or so; Either way, I had a good time with it and a rushed, kinda mediocre ending won't change that (can't wait for Nisekoi 4 to be serialized eventually)

Kiyoshi meanwhile lives on to see another year, not complaining though since I think the series got a lot better in the time between the last anniversary and this one; I do find it funny that its anniversaries have coincided with the endings of both Chojo and its batchmate Himaten

Btw, I don't quite like how the UD author is only making small arcs, now the series is stable he has what it needs to make a great real first arc...

I've seen this today, but i think it will only be about the card game, not any anime info (those 4 episodes)

A really strong issue this week, and not just because Hunter x Hunter is back (but that sure does help). Really glad we kicked off this batch with a return to Kurapika and the minute machinations of these tertiary characters, setting up for this revelation/clarification that there's actually no way out for the route of multiple princes winning and still maintaining power - it's either one or none. Final page was also unsettling as well and if this means more Oito content then I'll HAPPILY take it. She's one of the characters I hope becomes prominent in the grand scheme of things.

A nice conclusion to this Brook flashback in One Piece - it doesn't quite stack up with his first flashback or various others in the series but my boy needed some more prominence in the late-game of the series and now he's got set up with the final foes directly, as well as his eventual reunion with Laboon. Brook enjoys stay blessed. Akane-banashi was powerful in moments this week, but there was something a little too hectic in the presentation in how many times it jumped between flashbacks to internal dialogue to the stage performance to Kaisei's younger self, which gives it a rare third ranking for me. Shocking. Ichi the Witch was a lot of fun between the cast in downtime for most of the chapter but ends on a nice revelation which I'm sure is going to mirror where Desscaras and Ichi stand in this conflict. And Hal Formula managed its best chapter so far - just really tightly paced, a lot of scenes that feel like important foundations for what's to come, and a stellar full page of Miharu's emotions on display.

Quite a few other series that could have made my top 5 on a standard week: Blue Box concluded that beach trip in a sweet and satisfying way, and sex. I'm feeling we've got a few chapters now of montage wrap-up of the rest of the school year going into them being apart. And a nice finish for Hima-Ten! too. Kind caught me off guard with the flash forward but we leave everyone in a good place, and despite what I'm seeing on Twitter, I can remain content that after all this time being convinced otherwise, my girl won, and I'm still kinda stunned. There was part of me that thought the only way this could work is if Tenichi and Honoka remain together because they aren't celebrities, while everyone around them continues to go on with their lives of showbiz, and that's what we got. Me & Roboco had a total winning chapter this week whether you measure by gag or cuteness; Cannon Master impressed me more this time than the first chapter did, actually. I'm already feeling myself become invested in the ideas of this world and the art is still impressive to me. I like that Bharat actually was the star of the chapter in terms of showcasing what he can do and Ur was sidelined (until next week).

Kind of loved that one page in the sky for Sakamoto Days, Under Doctor kind of moved me in a way I didn't expect it would, kind of digging this current face-off in Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi (this was a very solid use of a Lead CP chapter) and even Class 2-B: The Hero Destroyerz kind of rebounded from having my least favourite chapter last week to one that I thought was pretty funny (I'll take piss jokes over poop jokes, evidently) and strong with its action and introduction of this series' Katsura. He seems like a goof, I like him.

Kind of fitting that Shinobi Undercover ends up near the bottom of the magazine for what was probably my least favourite chapter of the series, lol.

Top 5 of Issue #31:
1. Hunter x Hunter
2. One Piece
3. Akane-banashi
4. Ichi the Witch
5. Hal Formula
Also a strong week:
6. Blue Box
7. Hima-Ten!
8. Me & Roboco
9. Cannon Master
10. Sakamoto Days

Also quite good:
11. Under Doctor
12. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
13. Class 2-B: The Hero Destroyerz
14. Someone Hertz
15. Roku’s House of Oddities
16. Animal Signal

Serviceable, I guess:
17. Nue's Exorcist
18. Drawn to the Fire
19. Kinato's Magic
20. Shinobi Undercover

Honestly, whole post is a great review of the series and why its qualities weren't properly praised as it didn't just go plot -> plot, etc and cared to build these characters in a natural way, but this part is specifically what I agree with the most.

Some people often complain about the childhood friend/original girl losing to the main heroine as a boring trope and I always think how this general complaint ignores romcom as works of art and treat them as some sort of Reality TV (oh, I would personally date that girl, so I'm on her Team). This often happens because girls like Onodera in Nisekoi represent the current status quo of the story and the main character, often with a simple crush based on looks and a general nice personality, while the Main Heroine is the agent of change -- it's the character who pushes for change and growth. In Nisekoi, Raku isn't really fully himself with Onodera because he tries to play an image (and she also does that), Chitoge though can bring his true personality, the good and the bad. This is why him maturing is realizing the person closest to him is who he can be open with.

The main issue with Himaten is how we get several chapters about Himari and Kanna growing as people, showing their likes and dislikes, and influencing change on Tenichi, yet Honoka is excluded from that. She's basically a rock for most of the story to the point the last chapters trying to show her "memorable moments" struggled to find these key scenes to highlight this.

Romcoms are inherently a sister media to romantic visual novels and dating simulators. Key scenes and moments are exactly what punctuates the romance in these: Nekoko showing the castle in the sky, stealing a car with Setsumi, hugging Yuuko at the church, etc. Events like this are at the core of how to properly build a heroine and a main character dynamic and showcase their journey together later on, yet all of these moments went to Himari and Kanna.

The main issue with this ending is that it feels like one of these licensed PSP VNs based on romance anime and manga where the main selling point is you're allowed to pick whatever heroine you want. Reading this is like I was reading Toradora Portable and reading the route of a side character like the teacher. It can be nice as a what if game route, but as the ending of the actual story it just works against everything built before and the themes the story had.

It's not like you can't make this work, there have been "childhood friend" endings that worked before.
The World God Only Knows
did it and, even though some didn't like it, I don't think anyone felt like it wasn't a progression of all the development the main character had through the story.
It basically concluded the whole idea of how to connect with people you need to see them on equal footing instead of chasing expectations based on fiction.

Maybe Honoka could have worked if she actually interacted more with Himari, the character supposed to be the agent of change, and this made her see Tenichi less as an image and more as someone actually tangible and who she could talk with. Instead it felt like the whole universe had to contort itself to justify why a character who wasn't active, didn't have key developments or iconic scenes somehow had to be the thematic closure of a story she was barely a part of.

Again, this goes back to the idea of the genre as lesser, so "Every Girl Needs To Have a Chance" sometimes is treated as objectively the right decision because it's "fair". The issue is that a story shouldn't exist to be fair, it's not a fast food burger you can just remove or add ingredients, the way some talk about romcoms often leans on that: "I want a story where the MC and CF get together and FL loses" as if everything is just about archetypes and delivering a specific recipe, taking or adding parts based on the customer's demand.

It's fine for the main love interest to win because usually the plot is centered around that and subverting just for the sake of pleasing a specific audience is detrimental to the story. Meanwhile love interests that are "meant to lose" can still work by bringing up different themes and challenges to the characters. Kanna herself was always a loser heroine, but her actions seemed more influential to Tenichi and Himaten's idea of personal desire x dreams more than anything Honoka did, it was fine for her to "lose" as she had her own character arc. Same way even Onodera felt like she actually grew to have a stronger personality in Nisekoi by the end.

The issue is exactly how disjointed the Tenichi-Honoka pairing was to everything else, I wouldn't be happy even if I liked her more. It's not that you have to follow the expected ending, but the themes that were constantly built before have to be completed in some sort of way. This is as if Death Note ended after Near is introduced with Light going "actually nevermind", burning the book and leaving to leave a normal life as if nothing happened. The punchline just never happened with Himaten.

edit: what the hell, sorry for how long this is.

Animal Signal is very charming and funny. This was a good chapter, and I think each chapter has been better than the previous one. Kokone is really cute and the art is good. I think there’s maybe some potential here for a hit.

Btw, I don't quite like how the UD author is only making small arcs, now the series is stable he has what it needs to make a great real first arc...

I've seen this today, but i think it will only be about the card game, not any anime info (those 4 episodes)
Boruto spinoff called "Coruto" is coming. It will star Coruto and his girl sidekick Coleslaw (who is somehow the long lost relatives of Sarada/Salad)

meh issue, letting the new stuff cook and all but I'm annoyed about the animal signal translation

hal is a bit eh for me but i'm trusting terasaka, cannon master has me hooked but i do wish the action was a bit clearer to follow

blue box and himaten wrapping up certainly leave big romance holes in the magazine but i can see someone hertz holding the fort down.

i do think the next to go are drawn to the fire and/or kinato, i just can't see these staying much longer. kinato is starting to feel like the series people think shinobi is, but it's steadily losing charm for me. still need to catch up to hxh, let's see if it happens

issue votes

1) akane
2) someone hertz
3) blue box
4) 2-b hero destroyerz
5) under doctor

Yo Blue Box! I genuinely didn't think the manga would ever imply that. I'm impressed

Ichi does Ping Pong Peril better than Ping Pong Peril
You can barely make heads or tails in whatever the hell they were doing this match. The action & panelling is piss poor.

When you come for the king, you best be ready. This isn't even worth gloating over.
