I really wanted to counter this, mainly because I could see the world hater accepting a witch if she really did hate other witches/humans, but your argument is very sound. Especially because, we have a third example of "magiks being able to take over witches", in the form of ichi. Ichi had a strong enough will to fight back against uroro, but this clearly is something that can happen. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the plan of that one magik trapped in descaras's magic circle either, fujimine could easily be our introduction to this sort of threat. Plus, the narrative twist of fujimine being a hero, who attempted to save her friends, would just be great. And it would probably tie into her comment to Ichi, as she's currently pretending to be human. All this to say, you've won me over, I think I'd be bummed if this isn't what Nishi has planned.

I was not talking about sales but popularity. I knew physical sales have gone down a lot. There are a lot less megahit in the mag now compared to 10 to 15 years ago. The magazine was so stacked back then. Now there is literally only 4 standouts.
If you're talking about toc rankings, we have no way to know how Psyren or Anedoki would perform today, why would Anedoki suddenly be a hit in the rankings if it was published today when it was a flop in 2009?
There's few old flops that would perform better now, since the current roster is less competitive that it's been in the past, but 2010's Obon issue was actually a pretty similar makeup:
8 series under a year old with 3 hits and 5 flops - plus one hit romcom that was about to end
Compared to the current roster having
9 series under a year old, with 2 hits, 2 flops, and 6 unknown - plus one hit romcom-ish series (Someone Hertz) and another romcom that just ended
If Anedoki couldn't survive in that era, it wouldn't survive now either. Psyren I think would've been given more time at the end though, at least an extra round or two to finish more completely.
Quit Laughing, Shijima: Very interesting one-shot.
The story flow isn’t the best, but Horikoshi’s art is still great, and I noticed a bit of early Dandadan influence in the monster designs... the series has good potential in terms of story, but it’s not really horror at all.
The fact that it’s being published in Weekly Shonen has probably toned down the truly horror elements.
UNDER DOCTOR: This chapter seems to be the last one in this mini-arc about the Chinese restaurant incident.
I have to say, it’s really nice when you read it all at once. I still haven’t quite figured out what Tanimoto has in mind for the story, though. We know he’s (Haiji) looking for a cure for an incurable disease affecting his friend, but I’m really not understanding how that part of the plot is developing.
Aside from that, he’s improved compared to the first chapters.
Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: Mole Arc… or Exorcist Academy Arc, finally! (Even though I was hoping for an Angel Arc to learn more about Kiyoshi’s family.)
Still, it starts off really well. They introduce a ton of new characters, there’s an obvious Blackbeard-type character in a more chill, friendly version, and we also find out that the headmaster has a son (who looks exactly like him hahaha)

If you magically release all these 2000s manga today, they would be all selling worse and similar to the current new major or mid tiers, Psyren would be doing 20k, Toriko would be selling 100k, etc, at least in physical sales.

Acting like the 2000s/2010s Shonen Jump series were all perfect flawless literary works, meanwhile people reading weekly were complaining how Reborn's Future arc drags, how Bleach's TYBW was bad, how Toriko got worse during the Gourmet World, etc. Not that I agree specifically with all these complaints, but they were no different than the manga currently running.

Something that is still a problem today honestly. If anything you (and I mean that hypothetically) have to look at things yourself to be the judge of it. You brought up Bleach TYBW arc, when I was about to start reading Jump (past and present) Bleach was on my list due to hearing about the Big 3. What I got that almost swayed me was Super Eyepatch Wolf’s video, “The Fall of Bleach.” I was still going to read it, but then I saw DBZIMRAN’s video, “Bleach, Ruined Reputation,” which was trying to debunk the misinformation that spread around regarding Bleach and challenging SEW’s video. It helped and prepared me for what’s to come when I started reading and watching the series. Helped because of covid but man, can those filler arcs get out of hand? But despite the flaws, I appreciate it and it also helps that the TYBW arc is being adapted and redacted so it can fix the problems that plagued the arc due to Kubo’s health and redeem the parts that needed the focus. But honestly I feel that the anime helped as it didn’t feel as bloated or bogged down by the fights, filler, or any of the humor that could feel distracting.

It's fantastically directed, adding in cool stuff people wanted to see, extended the weaker fights, while still being significantly better paced. I think it's totally expected that people would end up rather revisionist in this specific case. If it can fix how these last few fights ended then pretty much all complaints about the manga's final arc will be addressed (except angry shippers but they don't matter).
I am disappointed with Hori's oneshot honestly. It is not a horror but an exorcist manga.
The best kind of horror is when the main characters are actually hopeless.Not the kind that can just punch and kick the threat away. This is why resident evil with leon is not scary, but the flashback part with the 6 years old girl getting chased by the mob of crazed experiments are the scariest part of the latest RE game.

Thats really downplaying it IMO. Both of those were getting serious hate before they ended and settled on ships. It’s not different from recent series, just time has allowed for people to downplay the reaction to the ending and most haters moved on. That will happen to all the modern series with supposed ‘terrible’ endings. It already happened with AoT and MHA when they got animated

It's true that both these series were getting hate before the ships even happened BUT - and idk about Naruto here, since I wasn't super involved in its fandom back then - but for Bleach specifically I remember loads of people literally BURNING their Bleach volumes and merch because (spoilers I guess?) Ichigo ended up with Orihime instead of Rukia lmaooo. I think a lot of the hate already swirling around Bleach (and maybe Naruto, like I said, not too sure personally) ended up being even bigger and amplified even more by angry shippers lol.

Issue 37-38 rankings:
Tier 1 (Good):
1: One Piece – Luffy VERY much needed that talking to. I’ve seen some people say that Luffy isn’t taking this seriously enough and I disagree with that, of COURSE he’s taking it seriously, but he still needed a bit more locking in to fight Imu and Gaban has hopefully provided it to him – he was becoming too complacent. Chills when Gaban said “this is the man we’ve been waiting for”. Gaban losing the same arm as Shanks at the end is interesting, wonder if Luffy is gonna get flashbacks? Funny enough, I thought the fight with Imu would have us go up to the as of yet to be seen third of Elbaf, but we’ve gone down to the Underworld instead lol. I read a theory that maybe the close Imu is to the sea (the more down he goes, altitude wise) the weaker he becomes, and I’m beginning to subscribe to that theory.
2: Ichi the Witch – Ay yo, sus chapter title, who or what is getting clapped? Oh wait, that kind of clapping…fair enough. For some reason I imagine Amadoro with Romi Park’s voice. Dess being aware that she thinks super highly of herself is chuckle worthy too. OH! Sukemaru is the invisibility Majik. Makes sense now, but it was still a funny gag when they were ignoring it right after entering. The image of Ichi potentially sussing out Sukemaru was terrifying, good thing he’s on our side lol. I wonder who, if anyone, is gonna acquire Sukemaru…Kumugi might be good since she can support whilst invisible and isn’t a fighter whereas with Dess and Ichi being fighters, I feel like it’d be op to have invisibility for them, especially Dess..but also Ichi’s whole thing is hunting, so being invisible and sneaky suits that. HOLY SHIT right as I was talking about my main problem with the series so far being Gokuraku fading into the background recently on here, he IMMEDIATELY gets a moment to shine in this arc by saving Ichi from Hakari, wow. It’s like Nishi listened to me (jk). Great chapter.
3: Akanebanashi – Maikeru is back! And holy unreliably narrator lmao, not sure I quite believe Zensho there about him being the reason the Arakawa name spread lol. Ahh shit, he made me laugh with his unexpected Issho impression…NOOOO, I don’t want to like anything this guy does ffs. I’m very interested to see how he does Time’s Up.
4: Hunter x Hunter – Those are some really detailed bullets lol, Togashi probably spent a lot of time on those. Benjamin killing Tserri was pretty brutal. Of course, I doubt he’s really dead lol. Sneaky Benjamin too, using a meeting to poison two more Princes. His curse is making him look real rough lol, tbh I didn’t expect him to be the kind to get excited at the prospect of life and death battle, but hey. And he’s even self aware that he’s got a lot aimed at him in terms of targets. Honestly, I totally understand Benjamin and the position he’s elected to taking. He won’t win though….actually, if Tserri comes back like is obviously gonna happen, by the time he DOES come back, most of the Princes will have been probably taken care of by Benjamin, sooo that’s not good lmao, I fear this is only going to massively help Tserri in the battle. Good chapter, everything was put in place in the previous chapters that we can now accelerate the going ons.
5: Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi – Kiyoshi got aura now in the eyes of other people, crazy. Kiyoshi and Akari are like that meme of the guy being upset at his order and the girl has to speak up for him lmao. Nah this Yagi guy ain’t the guy who did it, I don’t suspect him, too easy to be the first person who showed up. I still suspect Tenno, but now with the characters suspecting him, I am lessening my own suspicion of him lmao. Kitano, a son! Or grandson is more likely. Not him either, he’ll help in the case and he is most definitely interested in Kiyoshi lol. I want to especially shout out Kiyoshi as a series actually, I’ve always liked it but I think ever since we visited Misogi (Kiyoshi’s grandma), the series has clicked a lot more for me and really hit a good stride these past few weeks. I agree with Kioyshibro that this is the best arc opening the series has had so far, I’m really engaged with the series now in a way I wasn’t before. Keep it up!
Tier 2 (Good):
Quit Laughing, Shijima – Ooof, Azumi reminds me of well, me when I was his age, not having a clue what to do and just going with the flow lol. Usually I’m the type to never really get scared or horror stuff, but – fun fact about me – I am scared of the ocean and deep waters, so that combined with the freaky way Hori draws the demon things is kinda unsettling for me lmao. The art for this is REALLY good, Hori has always had good art though so that’s no surprise. Anyway, solid one shot, I enjoyed it! Whilst reading it I kept thinking “this would be good as a one-shot but I’m not sure how you’d make it into a serialised series” and then the end parts happened with the sick design and the teasing of more things (and characters) so I definitely think Hori himself is thinking of serialising this in the future. So it could go either way, I suppose!
Kagurabachi – Ah so we got an immediate answer to my question last week: his doubles are useless in fights haha, fair enough. Also surprisingly from what I thought last week, these past Masumi guys aren’t total scrubs and jobbers lol. Shiba being the MVP even whilst injured, my goat. Kunishige could seriously be the protagonist of his own series lol. Which is what makes long flashbacks work, One Piece does it all the time – if you want a good flashback, make sure the lead character(s) can be a main character of a series themselves, then you’re working with gold.
Someone Hertz – Mimei, you’re seeing her face everywhere….is this not a clue? Lmao. Miyamoto/Hateful Eight is a cautionary tale of what can happen to you Mimei, don’t let it come to pass! Annnddd it was just Noda in a costume lmao. But hey, Mizuo kinda got jealous a bit he was hanging out with another rival heh. Haha, it’s a bit frustrating that they can’t be super open with each other and Mizuo in particular always had to express her feelings through jokes or references that Mimei doesn’t get, but it’s kinda cute, it’s like their thing.
Under Doctor – Oh WAIT! It IS going longer than two parts. Huzzah! Last chapter had a sense of finality to it, so I thought that was it lol, weird. I hope Samejim sticks around as a recurring character on the medical side of the series, I like him. It’s nice to see all three of them working together. Aww, nice little ending with them all going round to Ishiguro’s place to eat. Nice chapter!
Witch Watch – It’s down to the OG crew vs Shikimi! A three minute time limit has been set. Not much to say about this chapter as it was action focussed but it was still pretty neat! The art especially was very good, especially the double page spread of Moi pulling out the roots of the trees, you can tell Shinohara had fun making a whole battle chapter.
Roku – Oh shit, his friends are coming over. This’ll be fun. Lmao at the Hisoka posing. Lmao Manba being shook at Kabaneji’s strength. Aw, they got Altra a gift, that’s nice. Roku acting like a big brother to her was also cute. Gevaudan in a bad mood is terrifying lol. Makes sense he is after all….a big dog. Johan, in his own time, giving his “blessings” to the food that he’ll eat as if it’s some kind of great honour to be devoured by him is hilarious, how is so full of himself? Lol. Looks like this might continue into the next chapter? I can’t wait to see what kind of monstrosity they’re gonna turn the washing machine into lol. Whenever the science club chapters happen, I get big Agravity Boys vibes, it’s definitely the closest in terms of dynamic to that series that this new series of Atsushi Nakamura’s comes to. Fun chapter!
HAL Formula – Oh there’s someone else on Hinokura’s team who’s even better? Kiryu huh? Another weird substory for him…jk, but his name has dragon in it, so he must be cool. Look at Dan coming up with winning strats! Oooh making Miharu’s helmet look kind of like a demon there was a cool visual. And nice, basically glitched the computer up and caused Hinokura to malfunction lol. Art at the end went hard. Nice chapter.
Cannon Master – Holy shit they cut it in half with precision, wow. The Demon once again looks cool, interesting to see they have melee weapons of their own. So in the future we can get not only human vs mech but human vs “human” as well…and I’m willing to be we’ll get mech vs mech of course lol, it’ll be like Metal Gear Solid. The double page spread looks INSANE lmao, the art of this series is truly amazing. Very cool fight all round, this series has big potential for dynamic and big scaled fights, it can definitely be cinematic (the final double page spread even changes to “widescreen” lol). Looks like a new Demon has entered, obviously I’m going to guess this one is stronger lol. Let’s see how they do next week!
Nue’s Exorcist – I’ll be honest, and it’s probably my fault for not paying as much attention as I should, I also assumed Gakuro and Shitotsu knew Yagyo killed their dad too lmao. Seems like Yagyo is projecting somewhat his own feelings onto the siblings. Gakuro immediately grabbing his sword with the other arm whilst the cut off arm was still gripping it was metal as fuck.
Tier 3 (Ok):
Animal Signal – Welp. That’s what happens when you’re walking on the railing like that lmao, let that be a lesson! Damn, some long nails, must be a pain to hold stuff sometimes. Going from a canary to a pigeon almost seems like an insult tbh…you are now a sky rat, congrats! But hey, it helped her sing, so who’s to say it’s a downgrade lol. It was an ok chapter, hence Ok tier!
Kinato’s Magic – Thought they were doing the Fusion Dance at first lol. The demon king thing she summoned looks like something from Black Clover…I guess just because it looks like a bull to me lol. Oh yeah this is totally axed. There’s just no way all of this got resolved just like that if it wasn’t lol, that was INSANE pacing (derogatory). A new Talk-no-Jutsu record. Ah well, the art is still nice so I guess I’ll appreciate that before it’s done.
Class 2-B – Disabling abilities is a pretty powerful ability, but I do wonder how they determine who’s an invader or not, because otherwise it should disable everyone’s ability on the floor lol. Hey, at least the crazy cleaning contraption worked! Seems we have an antagonist, one within the school at least, I like that. And Prof joined the class! I wonder if we’ll keep recruiting people to the class more and more? Also it’s funny he became a recurring character but there was another glasses wearing character with him that has been completely forgotten about…damn, he really was a one off….
Drawn to the Fire – Nice to see where Natsu started out with basketball. Ahh heavy is the head that wears the crown. Being so determined to get better that you’re seen as a “try hard” is relatable, I completely understand how Natsu feels tbh. It’s nice to see how Mizuhara brought back his passion. Honestly, good chapter tbf. Though, and I’m no basketball expert, but I feel like bonking the ball off someone’s head would be a foul, no? Maybe not, idk lol.
Ruri Dragon – Wow Kuro is uhh, pretty polite huh? Lmao. Ruri is right, Kuro is kinda cute, he’s like Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon except uhhhh, with teeth! Curious as to why En seems to be so devoted to (or scared by) Ruri’s mum lol. CATS! This was gonna be in tier 3, but it gets a bump up specifically for the cats!
Me and Roboco – It’s been a while since we’ve seen this rivalry. Actually…have we ever seen it? It’s been so long that I’m doubting myself lmao.
Sakamoto Days – Of course they can’t work together lmao, makes sense. Slur in between Osaragi’s legs, it should have been me!!!! The double page spread was cool. So now he has Akao’s eyes as well? Since when could he merge personalities like this? Lol but fine whatever, we’re just kinda in the final fight now so it doesn’t really mater anymore, at least not to me personally.
Shinobi Undercover – Woah, Kijibato has like…steam engines on his arms. Like Iida from MHA but on his arms. Interesting. Lmao the Black Mud being like a pet now…guess that’s a mascot character for the series sorted out, though it came later than usual for this kind of character lol. And it’s named Kuro! That’s two in a row with something named Kuro, the Japanese can be very uncreative sometimes huh? Lol. Kawasemi getting trolled about his past was fun, he kinda reminded me of Yodaka there. NOOO GABAN LOST HIS ARMM-wait a minute. Quite funny these were the same issue of the mag, even though it’s the opposite arm lol. I will have to dock points from the series for that Squad 1 “reveal” though and rant a bit about it. Maybe some may like it and that’s fine, but Squad 1 has been hyped up for a while now and to find out it’s not even a real fucking Squad it’s just a temp Squad made up of Elites from Squad 2 onwards is kinda…bizarre? And not in a good JoJo’s way lol. Why even have it be called Squad 1? Why have it even be a Squad at all? Why would this “Squad” not just be its own separate thing? Why hype it up so much? It’s like if in Bleach Squad 0 were hyped up the whole time and instead of being an actual division of its own people, Kubo went “nah, it’s just a hypothetical squad that sometimes forms when other Captains come together temporarily”. Like yeah, it sounds kinda cool if that’s what you built it up as, but you didn’t – you built it up as if it were an actual Squad full of strong people. In fact, I’m half convinced the author just changed his mind about what Squad 1 was halfway through the series lol. Just a bit of a baffling bit of world building there lol. It’s just silly lol.
