Regarding rule #9, an exception will be made for when we have new series, in this case, spoilers will be allowed only for the first 3 chapters of a new series for the users who are interested in knowing informations and details about the new series, these spoilers will obviously be kept under tags to protect anyone that doesn't want to be spoiled, so don't worry about it.

Can we please stop this 'OMG Kiyoshi is unpopular and going to be cancelled!!' talk every week? People have been saying it's doomed since the very start yet it's past ch 100 and still going strong. It's clearly perfectly fine. There's no point in making the exact same comment and people replying the exact same way every single time we get any new info.

Unless it absolutely blows up with an anime, folks will be saying this for as long as Kiyoshi's ongoing.

You can't compare Black Clover and Kiyoshi. Black Clover sold more copies and had more covers than Kiyoshi during the same two-year period of its existence.

Who said this? I literally posted here the sales were inflated as hell because of the scalping and should be pretty much dismissed, Kinato is obviously dead since before the Majo arc. Everyone could see that and Kiyoshi kept getting cover and color pages. It's really only Stivie who says that.

You can't compare Black Clover and Kiyoshi. Black Clover sold more copies and had more covers than Kiyoshi during the same two-year period of its existence.

But Black Clover didn't reach CSM pre-anime levels of sales.

It wasn't Stivie, if i remember it was Wyldviolet that started the argument about Kiyoshi being potentially in danger if a bunch of new stuff suddenly appears selling as much as Under Doctor & Kinato alongside these two, and well, we now know how that went through lol

Why would Kagurabachi get the Autumn cover? Hokazono can't even draw a color page, he will very likely get the 2027 Spring Issue for the broadcast of the anime.

Well, my plan to review all the one-shots from 2026 bombed immadiately, so until I invent a new format we're stuck with the same old episode of...

Jump Retro Review

It works like this: I think of a chapter of any series in Jump history that is important for historical or personal reasons, or a particular issue historical on itself, then I wonder: "what was the magazine doing when this chapter/issue was published?". So I search for every available translated chapter from that particular ToC, and I review all those I can find in order to have a snapshot of what series were ongoing and at what part of the story they were at a certain point in time. It's like reading an issue of Jump of the past!

Spoiler: Previous episodes

Issue #17, 1999: the one where Luffy and the gang walked to Arlong Park, JoJo classic concluded and Yabuki was debuting with a later axed manga.
Issue #12, 2005: the one where the battle between L and Light had a winner, Matsui debuted with Neuro and many other series delivered their own historical chapter.
Issue #22, 1985: the one where I tried reviewing an issue of the '80s and it was so difficult that I swore to never do that again. Now updated!
Issue #45, 2011: the one where I wanted to cover a pivotal chapter of HunterXHunter, but I read the wrong issue and got a pivotal chapter of Naruto instead.
Issue #15, 1991: the one where a certain Saiyan turned his hair blonde for the first time, and the history of manga changed forever.
Issue #48, 2008: the one where Jump didn't care to celebrate its 2000th issue, but there are a number of historical chapters anyway, most notably Bleach is about vice-captain Omaeda.
Issue #33, 1997: the one where it was the last time we lived in a world without One Piece, and I thought it would be an easy issue to cover but there are too many unfound chapters.
Issue #43, 2011: the one where I corrected the mistakes of the past and covered the issue with that pivotal chapter of HxH, where we mourned the loss of a King.
Issue #41, 2001: the one with the weak motivation of being the last issue of Jump before 9/11, but at least it contained some gems like the 5th chapter of Bleach.
Issue #29, 2017: the one where a beloved Pillar says goodbye at the end of the Mugen Train Arc, and six consecutive series just debuted, all of them notable in different ways.
Issue #41, 1993: the one where YuYu Hakusho gets cruel with kids and nothing else was particularly impressive, sign of a transitional era for the magazine.
Issue #6/7, 2015: the one where Gintama lost an important member of the cast, and Tamura delivered a one-shot between Beelzebub and Hungry Marie.
Issue #29, 1990: the one where I finally had the chance to write about one of my favourite all-time series, Saint Seiya, and also Goku uses his mind-reading technique for the first and only time.
Issue #46, 1981: the one where I was tempted to go through the first Jump with 10 reviewable chapters, finding the first episode of Black Angel and some good classics like Cat's Eye or Dr. Slump.
Issue #36, 2003: The one where Death Note debuted as a special one-shot, tons of battle shonen are thriving at the same time, and Jaguar won the contest for the panel of the week.
Issue #1, 2010: The one that kickstarted the decade of the '10s, with One Piece Strong World heavily promoted any many future succesful authors trying their shot with a not very succesful series.
Issue #7, 1987: The one where Dio Brando went too far after five chapters from his debut, and Kinnikuman was so '80s weird that it has to be seen.
Issue #30, 1995: The one with the special manga biography of Roberto Baggio that unfortunately couldn't be reviewed, but at least Bonbonzaka ends and a Yakuza bets his arm on a new era.

Let's take a look at the issue that is covered this week:

Issue #25, 2013. After looking back at the '80s and '90s with the two previous installments, we return to relatively recent times with this issue from "only" 13 years ago. The magazine, you will see, is stacked with hits, and the new series were struggling trying to find a place. Some series were also close to ending so here's that. But the reason I chose this magazine is one driven from a very recent happening...actually I could have chosen any other issue of the time, it wouldn't have mattered much.

Before going through, here are the series that I couldn't find:

• Victory Uchida no V Jump 20-Sai no Chōsen!! (a special about the mascot of V-Jump to celebrate 20 years of that magazine)
• Majin no Gald! (a special about a popular series published in Saikyo Jump)
• Koisuro Edison 26

Not bad at all, only two strange specials and a manga about a robot girl (that I would have liked to find). As usual, if anyone knows where to find what is missing, you can PM me and I will gladly update my rankings.

Now, you may have noticed that a series that always appears in the missing chapters section is not there this time. What could that mean?

Spoiler: Jump Retro Review, Issue #25, 2013

1. Shokugeki no Soma 23: There is some kind of challenge going on and if the girl loses, the protagonist gets expelled from the Masterchef Class. Not much happens in the chapter, but I liked a lot all the pep talks, from the judge telling the Yukihira that she has to pass with her own merits, to Yukihira himself giving her courage when she went into a panic. Nice hype for the actual contest that I presume is starting the following chapter.
2. Nisekoi 74: Chitose tells Raku that 500 individuals are following them during their pretend date, and since they are both incapable of dating, hilarity ensues. I am not a Nisekoi expert and I surprisingly had fun with this chapter! It is the most rom-commy of the rom-coms that I read (not too many actually), because it is both romantic and comedy. A nice surprise, and next chapter, the “second year” arc will begin!
3. Cross Manage 33: Our favourite (?) series about Lacrosse is in the middle of a match. After a start that was too chaotic for my tastes, and a funny interlude for some rules explanation, a timeout is called, and here the chapter shines. The protagonist (I think) feels guilty because she admired the rival team’s ace scoring a goal, and the coach is able to beat some sense into her and her teammates, showing them that they are not playing as bad as they think. It’s simple, but it worked for me, and got me invested in the story even if I probably will never read it in full.
4. Kuroko no Basket 213: It’s a flashback chapter about the formation of the Miracle Generation and Kuroko as their sixth man. It is mostly chatting, training and a devastating first tournament game, but it is always nice to have an all-stars chapter like this after the stars have been teased so much throughout the series.
5. Kochikame 1792: The main reason I took this issue is because MangaMillion finally released a lot of Kochikame chapters, and I was so excited by the idea of reviewing one of them that I chose one random issue that for sure contained one of the now available chapters. In this one, an ugly subordinate of Ryo is getting arrested just for being ugly, so the team tries in any way to improve his social standing, eventually sending him to some colleagues from Kansai where he would be accepted more. First approach with this line of comedy and…I liked it. I got a couple of laughs from the strange situation the group was in, and I found that there are not many references to the actuality of the publication days, so it can stand the test of time (unlike Gintama, whose chapter I disliked exactly for this reason, see later entry). Great discovery!
6. Bleach 537: Dad tells Ichigo all the secrets about mom’s death, Ishida mom’s death, and Yhwach. It was a good chapter that wraps up the preliminaries and makes Ichigo ready to start his new adventure. A bit off-topic, but back then I didn’t like the twist of mom and especially dad turning out to be powerful non-humans...I just liked him as a normal clumsy family dad.
7. World Trigger 14: I haven’t read this series so I was curious. The protagonist is challenged by a group of enemies or probably allies that just want to test him. They are strong but he alone appears to be stronger. An average action chapter that rises up the ranking just for being that, in an issue full of series where people just talk all the time.
8. One Piece 709: In the tournament for the Flame Flame Fruit, Block B is rumbling and it is nice to recall all those who were fighting in that block. I totally forgot the block distribution and there are some important people there, for the Dressrosa arc and for the series in general. It ends with the King Punch, one of the most devastating moves in One Piece, and with an unexpected survivor and winner.
9. Assassination Classroom 43: Still early into the series, class 3-E is brought at a swimming pool fabricated by Korosensei himself. Here, they discover Sensei’s biggest weak point so far, water. I recall that this leads to a very strong assassination plot in the future…nice callback to the first days of the series, where the main plot is just a background thought and for the most time the focus is only on the assassination attempts and on school life.
10. Toriko 233: What surprises me in this chapter is that it is basically about Toriko and Komatsu, who are the first two characters we meet in chapter 1. After so many chapters, at a point when many established series would have concluded already, the series is still very focused on strengthening the relationship of the main duo, and that is impressive. To do that, Toriko has an inner chat with Kyuubi Blue Oni Red Oni? I don’t remember and you can’t color distinguish them in manga format. Anyway, not an original idea considering also that the series that does it better is still running at the time.
11. Shinkai Fueki Kiruko-san 24: The final chapter of this series (save from an extra in the final volume). If I get it right, the gang has been fired from their job as novice policemen because they were making too much damage during their operations, and they try various jobs with various degrees of success, only for (heavy finale spoilers!!) being reinstated in the end. One of those comedy series that can’t live up the competition, but it could have gained a small following in other timelines. Reminded me of Super Psychic Policeman Chojo.
12. Beelzebub 204: A very serious chapter, this is. Furuichi (the protagonist right arm, if I recall) is kidnapped by Himekawa (the arch four pompadour) who is concocting with many shady characters. Furuichi is beaten up, then understands the evil plan and starts his counterattack. Or something like that. Entertaining, I have to say.
13. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. 51: Saiki and a barbaric friend go visit the home of a self-proclaimed secret agent in incognito or something. He is actually a highschooler like them with an oppressive mom, who thinks school grades are everything, so the protagonist has the chance of displaying the power of friendship to solve a difficult situation. As for the gags…well it was weak, but the story of the chapter was enjoyable so it’s fine anyway.
14. Haikyuu!! 61: Third set between Karasuno and Bluecastle. Their score is close at the end of the chapter, and while the opponent’s libero made one hell of a play, we can’t appreciate it for real before it drowns between all the other plays and discussions of strategies and what not. It is clear that the best part of the set is yet to come. By the way, third sports series in this issue; spokons were going strong at the time, right?
15. Sket Dance 281: Bossun and his class are organizing their stand for the cultural festival. They don’t go anywhere although I think that the quiz battle was a good idea. Being the leader that he is, the protagonist has the best idea of them all, the walk rally. All of this seems pretty ordinary for a series that is closing in a few chapters, the only hint of an ending is the final part with Switch being asked a really important personal question. By the way, Witch Watch is getting close to this number of chapters, what if it can stretch the story just enough to go on par with Sket Dance?
16. Naruto 630: There is a huge beast preparing a devastating attack, but all they do is talk and talk and boost their morale by talking and talking. But in a Genjutsu world, two major characters are facing each other! And they talk and talk and lecture each other about morals. I always thought that the last war of Naruto had some pacing problems.
17. Soul Catcher(s) 2: First things first, I haven’t read the series; I know it has a fanbase and I don’t want to hurt their feelings, especially because one chapter alone is not enough to judge a whole work. With all this said, I found the chapter…ordinary. There is a lot of talking and psychology means more than action, a formula that hardly found success in Jump. The protagonist can see other people’s hearts so his natural job is…orchestra conductor? Feels like a stretch. Probably having read Earthchild before this has conditioned me, but it doesn’t seem a series that I would rank high on a weekly basis.
18. Mutou Black 1: The new series of the week has some strong and weak points. It is a martial arts story set in a rotten Edo with a pacifist protagonist, bound to suffer the hardest of times: it can make for a good Kenshin-type kind of story. On the other hands, the problems are noticeable: there is too much dialogue, moving from point A to point B of the plot seems forced at times, and the aforementioned protagonist basically invented Judo, which loses credibility in front of enemies armed with swords. I suppose it didn’t have what it takes to survive, and in fact it was axed after only 12 chapters…different times.
19. Gintama 445: A chapter about Otsuu-chan the idol, and the other girls of the series that want to form a band with her. Full of citations of different japanese pop phenomena of the time, and I thank a lot the translation team for putting a lot of notes for every single reference they could get. It is still an hard to enjoy chapter for western audience, and it only made me remember that at the time, there was a theory for which Otsuu-chan was the mastermind behind all that was happening in the main storyline of the series.

And that was it for this issue of 2013, a year full of comedy, full of sports, and full of chapters where people just talk all the time instead of going into action. Still, I don't think I was ever able to review so much of the magazine, and now I have unlocked one new guaranteed series (well, not for all the decades yet) so the Jump Retro Review will shine!
