KaguraBachi will do well in Japan it’s just impossible for it to do jjk/demon slayer numbers. Maybe it’ll get an anime boost similar to Black Clover who knows?
Also KGB is getting gassed up a lot because there’s a lot of excitement towards it’s anime look at all the likes the teaser trailer got on all social media sites plus the reactions towards ep 1 are extremely positive.
Was there any other recent WSJ anime announcement that got numbers and likes on social media, like trending 1st on JP Twitter and stuff?

You guys need to remember that Nue getting an Akane-level boost would actually be really good considering the industry and its current popularity.

I'm honestly expecting it to only get a couple volumes on the daily anyways, it's just not the type of manga that'll get big physically. Fortunately for it, there are other sources of revenue like digital sales and merchandise that I think it could benefit a lot from.

Even Kagurabachi has a cap honestly, upper ceiling is probably 300K.

We are weekly Shonen jump readers; there’s nothing that’s impossible! The thing is no one predicted KnY would explode the way it did; it was very similar to Nue in that it was a modest hit with a cult following. The brilliant animation, the pure and wholesome protagonist, and strong plot made it explode. No one thought One Piece could get dethroned as the number one seller per year and it did. While I don’t love the Nue plot nor do I care all that much about Gakuro, I can objectively say it’s got the same strengths as KnY and it absolutely could. The cult hit is the crucial thing here; while Kiyoshi and Shinobi have the same strengths they don’t have the level of devotion Nue has (even though I like both more and frankly adore UEK). Again, it could fail to make a dent like UU’s anime but I’m just calling my shot right now (and again I don’t even care about the series LOL).

I think a little under what HxH does so somewhere between 200-350ish assuming it’s not utter trash. How much did burn the witch do?

Burn the Witch did 230k ~ 250k in 2 months according to Yearly Shoseki (It was released in a October), so we don't have a real full year which would put it at 300k ~ 350k very likely. Final Bleach volume sold 604k in a full year (Digital sales weren't a thing yet so is pretty much this number)

JJK Modulo #1 has sold 431k in the First Half of 2026 ranking, which i really don't see Bleach doing these numbers.

Im not really a Nue fan by any means but I think I think it’s fairly obvious Nue is going to be huge hit with the anime. The artwork lends itself well to being animated as long as they don’t fuck up the animation like Blue Lock, OPM or Sakamoto. If the anime is done right I legitimately believe it could hit JJK levels; I genuinely believe it could even hit KnY levels in Japan.
Not even the biggest nue glazers are this delusional and out of touch

Genuinely... no manga will ever hit jjk level of sales boost ever again. It was on the perfect storm of being released during the pandemic quarantine where everyone has nothing bettet to do except watching anime and play games inside

I had a lot of thoughts written up but they kinda sucked so I’m gonna sum them up better.

Nue is fully capable of amassing some form of popularity under the right circumstances, but it will be capped at a certain point just off of how it strongly caters to male viewers (fanservice, “nerd boy is nice to girls and they all fall for him” story (very reductive, I know, but we’re talking surface level reactions)), as well as how it caters to more online folks with it’s more niche nerd references and inspirations. I can see it reaching Mushoku Tensei levels of awareness, but I don’t think it’s the kind of series that your co-worker would ever bring up unless they’re also pretty online. Certainly not the kind of series that dominates the culture the way JJK/Demon Slayer have in recent years.

To use a more direct comparison, I think Nue can get at least as big as Akane-banashi; just targetting a different niche of people. This is a western perspective though, so volume-sale wise Akane will probably still come out on top.

If i would get a cent everytime someone says "This will never ever happen again" i would be a millionaire :grin

JJK peak wasn't even at the level of One Piece peak with a new volume selling nearly 3 million copies inside Weekly Oricon Top 50 lol you don't need covid for something else to hit these 1/2 million level of sales, you just need the right series at the right time, we always get these from generation to generation, JJK was just one of these too and there will be the next one in the future.

The last Demon Slayer volume sold over 5 million copies in a month. Things like that go beyond just a normal boost lol. I don’t even think the final One Piece volume could do those numbers. The numbers it did in 2020 are so mind blowing that I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see something like that again for another 10-20 years

You guys are aiming too low with the Akane comparison lol last Akane volume did basically 50k copies in the month, Nue already does 20k, if that is the peak of "potential" the series have, that's low, Akane has a pretty niche performative arts genre, Nue is a mainstream exorcist action series, it gotta have more "growth potential" than 50k in a month...

Guess I’ve been a bit dulled by the past few occurences. All the anime releases I’ve been around here for have been decent but not huge for sales boosting, and sometimes pretty middling. For a lot of them it was more like returning back to pre-anime peaks after a dip, and then maybe a bit above, but not much more than 10k above, especially for things like Sakamoto Days which felt like it was still floating around the same 100k bar before and after the anime even if there was a slight bump (I realize coting the Sakamoto Days anime is close to a worst case scenario but still).

When’s the last time we’ve seen sales double once the anime started? I can’t imagine that was the case for Undead Unluck, maybe for Mashle? But it sure didn’t happen with anything from 2021 onwards as far as I can tell (I do not have the charts on hand, please feel free to prove me wrong by feeding me hard numbers). I’m tempted to say the last time it’s happened is with JJK.

With Nue being 20-25k usually, that makes me think we need a pretty positive scenario to even get it to double up to the 40-50k range. But these things might not be as linear as I’m making them out to be.

Volumes selling 1/2M at Oricon won't happen again for many reasons, but digital existing and being popular is a major one. They can reach that with circulation numbers.

KNY has an appeal to all ages and genders that Nue doesn't have. In my opinion it's far more catered to a male demographic which is fine because it's in Weekly Shonen Jump, but to fully blow up to the levels of JJK and KNY you can't do that without also having something to allure a female audience too and nothing I've seen from Nue has that.

Hmm, it was Mashle but only with Season 2, S1 didn't do much, you're right, all later Jump anime hasn't doing much for sales, or at least physical sales, i feel like the biggest one recently was Blue Box and also didn't do that much, at least phyisical.

Tbf, none of these, excluding The Elusive Samurai, had necessarily amazing anime adaptations in terms of quality, and TES was never going to be big anyway.

Look, more money to my pocket 🤑

You only need to get the next Spy x Family level of mainstream major success and you will have your new 1m seller on Oricon, it will eventually happen.

Feel like the big boosts stopped a few years ago but I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of them pop up again eventually. For the first few years of the decade, there was new anime that was blowing up every year to ridiculous levels. KNY, JJK, Tokyo Revengers, and Spy x Family all got massive boosts and then Blue Lock and CSM also had big ones. Last year that I felt like had very big booms was 2023 with Oshi no Ko, Frieren, and Apothecary Diaries. Since then, there have been series that got a boost like Dandadan or The Medalist but it feels much more modest in scope compared to the first few years of the 2020s which feels like an abberation. Not a permanent abberation though. I can easily see another circumstance where we go through a few years of manga blowing up again

Ecchi isnt mainstream
Which Nue barely has it, specially in the beginning, since it's a exorcist battle shounen, so the point doesn't hold it lmao!
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also, are we going to pretend that ecchi shows or shows with ecchi/fanservice on it don't go mainstream all the time?
