You can pour the production level of a studio like KyoAni over it but the source still just mostly a lighthearted SoL shounen series and these never reach huge level of sales.
Besides, KyoAni hasn't been in the mainstream for a long time; their last big hit was Violet Evergarden, and that was back in 2018. City the Animation completely flew under the radar.

Spy x Family

And Spy x Family did not even reach the amount of viral that ruri got initially
lol Spy x Family was a huge hit from the start, vol 1 sold over 400k (only physical) in just half a year, by vol 3 the series was already selling 1 million copies per volume, 2 years before the anime started, RuriDragon popularity isn't comparable at all to SxF.

Also SxF has everything, a actual plot, comedy, drama, action, cute & emotional moments, that's how it became this worldwide massive hit, Ruri doesn't have the same things, which doesn't mean it can't become a worldwide hit of course.

sales figure from 2019 not comparable to now. And Ruri lost lots of momentum due to its long hiatus so early in its publication.

Put Spy X Family in exact same condition as Ruri (2022 release, long hiatus very early in serialization, etc), SxF would have been in similar state as Ruri.

I think a lot of people are waking up to the fact that getting anything close to JJK numbers are a fantasy, but I will say, it is nice schadenfreude. Not even in a "I hate this series" way, but more in a "you guys are annoying and deserved to lose" way.

This is why next year, Nue will be remembered as a phenomenon that saved shonen jump, while the bachi anime will just be another 8/10 that gets forgotten.
(Just like how my beloved UU was defeated by the Mashle menace, lol).

None of this makes sense, you're doing some whole gymnastics to try put RuriDragon at the same popularity/relevance as Spy x Family but SxF instant popularity is just in a whole different level that only very few Jump series like Assassination Classroom could compare to it, the difference in time between both vol 1 releases are literally just 3 years so there's no "big change in the industry" to apply here, SxF could release in 2022, go in hiatus and it would still be way more popular than Ruri lol

I understand where you come from, but still Ruri got a pretty big reaction globally because of the announcement.

I don't know if Ruri will become popular globally (which still can happen because of memes), but i can see it getting really huge boost from the anime, I can see Ruri doing 600k-700k per vol by the time S1 ends.

Some think it may be more than 1 Million per volume during the anime.

This hurts so much because City is such a good sequel-ish to Nichijou

There are some reasons as why City was not that popular, but I truly think Ruri will be a new hit for KyoAni. I don't know how big it will be, but I am pretty sure it will be one of the biggest animes of KyoAni.

It's not like Kyoani did many new series in the years since the fire to begin with, they focused a lot on sure hits like Kobayashi Maid Dragon and Euphonium, that are more popular franchises than 95% of the industry. There's no narrative about them falling off or anything like that, they're still the best production in anime.

I also believe people downplay a lot how big Ruri was from the start and how the hiatus impacted it. It's not even promoted that much by Shueisha, it's always a no show at WSJ or J+ promotions and was not even at any Jump Festa, it's basically carried by itself alone.

City is better than almost everything else, it has actually really good animation with intent, care for context and character acting instead of a compilation of random animators just doing whatever they want. It was always approved as a passion project to begin with considering Nichijou was always more of a cult hit, they probably got what they wanted out of it.

Yeah Ruri was big from the start but SxF is one of those rare manga that became one of the biggest in the industry instantly

Speaking of which I read this week's oneshot, Cursed Case.

The premise is pretty cool but the execution could be better. It's about a FBI division on the Texas/Mexico border that investigates crimes involving cursed objects, leaning more towards people as the monsters and maybe a little SCP influence rather than exorcist stuff. In practice however most of the chapter was just explaining things, so it wasn't all that interesting. I don't see this winning unless the others all suck.

The idea that the Ruri anime can't be a huge hit because its SoL is silly. No one could've expected its initial explosion in popularity. That alone proves that the genre isn't preventing it from reaching a huge audience at all. If the hiatus hadn't happened, it would be one of the biggest series currently running in the magazine, and even as is its one of Jump's most successful series of the 2020s. Compared to something like Nue, predicting that the Ruri anime will be a hit and give it a huge boost is easy. Don't get me wrong, I love Nue and think it has the potential to be a huge hit with the right anime adaption, but Ruri has already proven itself, and we already know its getting a high quality adaptation from one of the most trusted and popular studios in the industry.

It literally sold 120K first volume with only 6 chapters out and a hiatus of 3 months. If it had stayed on the physical magazine, it would probably be selling like 200K on volume 4 or so. KyoAni's touch might bring it to the next level of what is big. It literally got 1st place on the japanese social media when it got its anime announced.

No one is downplaying Ruri Dragon, everybody knows it was a very popular series from the start, but it still mostly a Slice of Life Shounen manga about cute dragon girl doing things, and these just never get huge sales, or at least the huge sales that some are predicting lol

No, actually it was quite predictable because it was really successful online from the 1st chapter, in fact it was one of the easiest "big hits" to predict like Blue Box lol

The thing is that this will not hit anywhere close to a million copies per volume in physical.
