The thing with Mamayuyu is that while it's flawed in how the story is built and developed, you can see a strong authorial intent in it, the manga has a strong identity and was going somewhere with the ideas it was working on. It's not the easiest thing to explain, but while reading it's easy to understand that Hayashi fundamentally is a better and more well read writer than most people working on shonen manga and takes influence from multiple areas, authors and styles, he's not one of these guys that you feel only read One Piece and Naruto growing up and decided to do something similar.

This isn't to say that anyone will be better for that single reason, I love Kinnikuman and you can feel how raw that manga is in how Yudetamago slowly learn writing techniques by themselves as they mature with the manga instead of just reading a lot, but Hayashi also understands the structure of these stories and how to twist them into his own voice in an interesting way.

Take it here how he frames the action and movement. He knows how speed lines work in manga to indicate things are going fast, so the pure black background in the other panels exist to make the speed contrast even harsher and more obvious. Only after cutting the enemy, he goes back to a black background as well, indicating the fast movement is over already.

And Mamayuyu is full of creative uses of visual and paneling to convey ideas that are usually done in a straightforward way. It's spice that makes the read more satisfying. It also gives confidence that the reader will be able to follow it when it goes for something unconventional.

Story wise, I think the comparison to Chainsaw Man someone made here makes sense. I greatly dislike most manga that are chasing Chainsaw Man as an inspiration because they take it at face value: "Chainsaw Man is a deconstruction of shonen manga, this is why I like it and will make my edgy and dark shonen manga". Never saw it this way at all, it's a story about how the classic shonen hero values are still valuable even in that dark world. Part 1 is about Denji making friends and working hard for his final victory. Part 2 is how even without powers he will still end up a hero because you don't need powers to do good in a cynical world.

Mamayuyu goes for the usual Hero x Demon Lord trope and it gives that impression that it could be a deconstruction of it. But at a more personal level, it's Hayashi showcasing what he likes about both sides of the trope. He's showing it can be cool played in the classic way, but you can also twist in many different ways and get interesting results because at a basic level Hero x Demon Lord is a yin yang concept based on dualism more than just good x evil and how that makes a whole.

While there are criticisms of the character gacha, he still is talented enough to make most of the cast pop-off and be memorable and recognizable with few chapters and lines, he's very flexible and gives unique voices to them. How many axed manga have characters as strong as Minerva? When you see people bringing up many axed series With Potential, characters aren't mentioned because people are actually dreaming about How that manga Could be good Eventually. Mamayuyu is praised for what it actually did with the characters, their actual personalities and what they did in the story.

I'm glazing him a lot and I don't mean he had no flaws. The axe was very understandable to me, like it was said in other posts here, he instantly starts meandering at the beginning and the manga is aimless for most of volume 1 because of that. What is this story going to actually be about? In contrast, Kagurabachi went directly to the point about it being about Chihiro chasing the swords to fight the coolest enemies around. Sojo is introduced early as a very cool antagonist with great design, abilities that make the reader interested in seeing their eventual battle and an early goal to chase already. Mamayuyu had none of that.

When it found a structure more clearly with Corleo going after the heroes and demon lords and a proper cast to hang with him, many readers probably already had lost interest or felt tricked by how this wasn't the Mom and Son story that everyone assumed it would be. Hayashi also maybe could have eased readers into his style of dense paneling and snappy dialogue, maybe it all felt too heavy on the readers.

But yeah, in the end I think you can boil down the hype he gets to the basic idea that he feels different. A ton of hyped axed series like Phantom Seer or these newbie action oneshots just aren't very interesting to me, I don't see how these would be developed into an interesting story. The authors get attention by drawing big horizontal action poses and them displaying them in two pages to call them a Spread Page and make that the core of their action coreography, with not much tought put into the narrative. He's at least not like that.

It also helps that he has a variety of oneshots in different genres and themes and they're always at least interesting and not just copycats of whatever genre he's trying this time. Gives me a good impression that a long running Hayashi manga would be able to do many different things well. I'm not sure if that's how japanese readers feel about him, but at least from what I see he's their most hyped axed author of the last few years.

uh, did people forgot that Hayashi was just desperately pumping out character gachas every single chapter in mamayuyu? The writing was on auto pilot past it's first chapter. It was barely interesting.
he was doing way better than Hokazono wth Kagurabachi, but he got sacrificed.

AXED RETURNEES:
- Minya Hiraga (Neru: Way of the Martial Artist, a return has been hinted)
Minya's been hinting about being busy with a project but now we know that project was an entry for a one-shot competition in another magazine entirely with a serialization spot on the line, so this one's basically impossible to happen now.

This was already talked about between the both of us before right? Anyway. Do you want to take a guess or two as to likely to debut or come back(axed or otherwise?

I will always remember MamaYuyu for the panel where a girl who is afraind of rain is suffering and the raindrops are represented by an onomatopoeia of rain falling

Given the context of declining sales this is somewhat reassuring, though the overall numbers still leave concerns, at least for me… it’s certainly not beating either Roku or Under Doctor at this rate, and with nothing else to fall to the wayside after this next batch we might get stuck with the tough choice of either losing it or axing Graykeith/Ura before their first volume is out, the latter choice of which feels not particularly fair since I don’t have the impression either series is bombing (time will tell how the rankings are at least, but neither of them strike me as U-19 candidates).

Why would they axe Graykeith or Ura?

The most recent Hal chapter gave me the impression its already gotten axed or at least the mangaka is feeling the pressure already. Shame its the only series that started this year that I really like lol (rip Kinato).

Going to be quite shocking if any of them flops based on online reception, both are pretty well received every week, Ura specially this week :derp
