Gonna be a crazy week at work for me, so I'm gonna hurry and put out a review before I get swallowed whole. Especially since it's a very good week.

Roku's House Of Oddities did not stretch it's little serious arc longer than two chapters, and it's surely returning to the usual shenanigans next week now that the current issues are resolved. If there's one good moral Roku teaches the young kids, it's that you can resolve situations with Talk No Jutsu. Like they even avoided conflict with the the exorcists by just talking to them about the situation. As it turns out, being open and keeping an open mind leads to many headaches being avoided. I think the little showcase of the drama is pretty good however, and it's merely a taste of the drama they can throw out much later down the line. Roku and Sachiko's emotions are very well drawn, and they communicate their feelings in a way that words cannot convey. I liked seeing them both being sad as it amplifies the reconcilation immensely. It just tells me that Roku is 100% ready to tell those stories it wants to tell, but for now, we must return to SOL. It's a major shift from Agravity Boys for sure. I could never mesh with that series because it's got some real dudebro humor to it, which carried over to Roku which I didn't dig either. But right now, the author's unveiling a new ace up their sleeve, and that's in emotional storytelling, which they didn't even try in their last work. Less of Roku's club getting mad at him for existing around a girl, more of these tender little moments, please. I'll take a dozen of it. I like it when people got new tricks to show off.

Hal Formula has been finding it's footing lately. This race is VERY engaging for me. While it doesn't amp up the stakes, and just feeds some jobbers to Suzukaze, there's some real back-and-forth, mindgames sorta thing that I believe makes sports manga engaging. Tossing two jobbers into the fire just to hype the MC sounds like a terrible idea, but context is key. They represent two types of racers that are expected to perform well, and their modus operandi is believable no matter what level of F1 you're on. One knows the track and can set record times easily, the other is instinctual and opportunistic. Two exact opposites that require separate skillsets to overcome. To allow Suzukaze to jump into bigger leagues and have it be acceptable, he's gotta take down those that represent the best of the best... of the current level he's on. I think this race encapsulates that perfectly, and makes an effort to make his opponents feel strong, unbeatable if he was where he was at the start of the manga. Who knows, they could lose now and come back stronger if this manga somehow makes it to 200 chapters (highly unlikely). Kinda like...

Akanebanashi or Rakugo Wars: The Television Menace. Akane's isolation closely mirrors the little anecdotes about Issho isolatiing himself on a mountain to gain that "Untongued" ability. She truly is the perfect disciple for him. Sith Akane has gotta be one of my favourite arcs I've had to see a main character go through, since she's essentially a total regression from the chipper version of herself we had been following all this time. All for rakugo, amirite? The current challenge seems to echo back to the challenge Issho put out for her two arcs ago: "Don't make them laugh." Except this time, they are outright commanded to laugh. This audience is the absolute worst one for someone attempting to mimic Issho's philosophy of "only seeing rakugo" because this type of audience does not see it, they just see Akane and a paycheck. As usual for Akane's curveballs, she's gonna hit it outta the park for sure. When I see Akane in one of the situations, I never think "if she gets it done", it's always, "how's she gonna do it". It's not gonna take too long: This portion is to show how far she's grown from the "Don't make them laugh" challenge, and how terrifying her growth is because it's barely been that long since then. But ignoring your girlfriend's rude, girl.

Graykeith: Translator Daemonica is my little puppy I pat on the head, but it's been diagnosed with rabies. I love this little dog, but it scares me to part with it even if I know it's an inevitablity. The first placement looks good, but it's not solid enough. It could just completely topple in the rankings in two weeks and game over. Metagame aside, another great chapter from Graykeith that amplifies it's themes of connection and the role of a translator to bring differing cultures together. Little Mafty here is a bit on the annoying side, but he's the cute kind of annoying. And I can't help but feel happy that this little shit got to read his 2000 volume manga where he gets to see the skelly dude do skelly things. It's adorable. And the little snippet of the end keeps on emphasizing that theme of translation: And how a shitty translation can tear apart an entire society. I'M LOOKING AT YOU JOHN WERRY AND WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO THE JJK COMMUNITY. But not you DUWANG, you're the good kind of shitty.

Kagurabachi which is set to be axed in 5 chapters apparently just quietly dropped a bombshell on us. I wasn't so interested in lightning boy or the Mikaboshi, they're all gonna die anyway. But Chiaki's fate has been on my mind for awhile. The most obvious answer to most readers would be, "She died during the war and that's why Soga did a genocide." Makes sense, gives Soga a proper motive, and explains why Chiaki hasn't appeared in the present timeline. Except this chapter says she and Chihiro talked in her prophetic vision. This obviously hasn't happened yet, and it heavily implies Chiaki's alive in the present in some way or another. Her alive status throws a massive wrench into the theory of Soga's psyche. Although, given how determined he is, it's likely Soga really was that crazy at this current point in time. Anyway, things like this is what I look forward to, and it's getting me itchy for the next arc.

Quick round: Sakamoto Days definitely ending now, I think this is the first time we've seen fat Sakamoto's eyes. Ichi The Witch got me feeling some kinda way about Desscarass, like phew. Shinobi Undercover, massive spy reveal. Or not. Ninjas, spies, betrayals, name a better match. Gearing up for a huge arc it looks like. The Ura Files basically saying we're in the friend zone for another 200 chapters. Animal Signal has the guy spending more time with his dudebros than his girls. I'm very sure Nue's Exorcist had a lifechanging chapter for it's fans, but since I'm not one, I had to pause and try to remember what happened to Kyokotsu (I don't remember). I read Nue's Exorcist via nuesmoker's reviews anyway, because I can't interface with the material in the same way. I already read through all of Nue some time ago, but since the manga isn't a match for me, I don't retain enough information to be on a similar level of excitement. Hell, Gakuro's gotten so many powerups I don't even know what he does anymore. Anyway, it's a mismatch, get your Nue reviews from the ten other guys. Still reading it though.

Voting:
1) The Ura Files
2) Kagurabachi
3) Roku's House Of Oddities
4) Graykeith: Translator Daemonica
5) Hal Formula

Ughhh the only Ryouma No Gagou tl there is is incomplete, of terrible quality, with horrid scans. Genuinely unreadable.

Unfortunately this makes me feel like Jump is going to lean even more on established IPs that can make more money outside manga even more than they seem to already be doing
Compel horikoshi and others to do epilogue sequel My Hero Academia and Hero Academia Vigilantes series please. We can't leave the world alone.

Probably revisit Black Clover too in five years too.

Not sure if Haikyuu has enough going for it to do like Major did with Major 2nd or Prince of Tennis with New Prince of Tennis. There is precedent though.

Seems all but certain SD ends, Cannon Master gets axed, and the extra open spot gets filled.

What do you guys thinks is next on the block? I think WW has a longer epilogue. Feels like HAL and animal signal are next on the block with 2B's volume 2 sales being a big make or break for it (comedies don't always surge in surveys so maybe Sorachi can avoid the axe like other vet's failed series).

What's everyone's thoughts for what we're going to get next aside from Bleach2?

Issue 49:

1. Nue's Exorcist
One of the best aspects about following a weekly manga is to see these storylines slowly developing over the years. Seeing Shiroha's journey to this point and seeing her connection to Kyokotsu being fully unveiled is satisfying. iT's a line being pushed and the knots slowly being undone and the bigger picture being fully revealed: it's a story about a family, united by unbreakable bonds of love, fighting back against a family that was just a bloodline.

2. Ruri Dragon
Shindo is playing with layers again. The story is about Ruri finding her own identity: is she a human or a dragon? But of course, we make the connection that this is also an analogy about growing up and the physical changes that affect how teenagers see themselves. Yet there's a third layer of meta narrative about Ruri Dragon as a manga: does it need to be a battle shonen because it has powers? The break between the recent fights to have Ruri calling her school and her worries about her friends, exams, daily life show the heart of the story. Things don't need to be A or B, they can just be.

3. Ura
Glad this chapter happened now as, while I really like this manga, I was worried about the progression being a bit too fast. This pacing is fine, Ura is a nice girl that is friendly with everyone and is glad she has a male friend for once. Things will develop, but a core cast of friendships is clearly being worked on here. The comedy was great as usual and by coincidence we got a lot of Ashita no Joe referenced. Rest in peace, Tetsuya Chiba, your legacy is clearly immortal.

4. Sakamoto Days
It was expected that this chapter would be a showcase of Sakamoto's growth as person while he seals away his dark past. Still making me feel moved by the chapter means the expected was done masterfully. Hana's daily antics being Sakamoto's influence, his eyes finally showing up, the art. These truly were our Sakamoto Day.

5. Roboco
I agree, kids shouldn't work. And more Ashita no Joe!

As for the others... Didn't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm so glad this fight is over in Under Doctor. FF's characterization wasn't fun, to say the least about him. Hoping future villains aren't more of this. Roku's chapter was nice, but did the art look inconsistent to someone else?

I didn't understand this. From what I understood of this chapter, I thought that Chiaki's power of foresight, seeing the future along with her being pregnant, somehow allowed her to communicate with her child in the future. That is, instead of just seeing the future, she saw her child, and some kind of connection between her and her current state made them talk. and why do you think she's alive in the present somehow?

It's never been stated that she can interact with her visions. Ergo, if she were to see Chihiro talking to her, it would have to mean she was able to speak at a point where Chihiro is able to speak. Now, how alive she is comes into question, it could even be as esoteric as "she's been forged into a sword" or "her spirit remains in the world", but some version of her has to be alive in some way past the previous arc. Although, if she was able to talk with Chihiro, the first thing he should say is, "Don't give Soga the Magatsuchi mom!" or any kind of advice to prevent her death, so it brings into question what Chihiro said from this communication.

Duo author who are able to keep up with weekly publication and a large amount of colour pages without any noticable drop in quality, managing to land a manga series that ranks and sells decently: "Man, this manga thing is tiring, I should end it before I hit 200 chapters."

Idk, I could see it going either way. It'll defo blow past 200 chapters imo, but this could be a status quo shift (that potentially leads into the final arc, like Sakamoto Days's equivalent), or it could always fail, but be like a major arc in context.

Decided to shift up my approach to my chronological journey through Jump. Instead of taking it year-by-year I'm going to binge each new series in order of its publication, like I would if I discovered it naturally. I'll post a more concise overall review as I complete them. Some things are out of order though so here's a review of the final stretch of series that wrapped up in 1985 that I'd finished:

Black Angels by Shinji Hiramatsu (1981-85) - It's too bad that most of what happened post-timeskip just didn't work for me. The change in cast, the amnesia, the Fist for the North Star-esque setting shift only to abandon that and attempt to capture what it used to be, with villains that felt sillier than before. By the end it escalated into quite a different series than it was again, and actually found myself craving those episodic stories of brutal killings versus these overpowered supernatural battles. Definitely not a winning wrap-up either, though there was something stark about how that very last chapter ended, both visually and how it intentionally didn't wrap things up in a tidy/epilgoue sort of way. To leave on that sort of note is kind of ballsy. Grade: C

Wing-Man
by Masakazu Katsura (1983-85) - Although there’s still one volume left to translate, I’m pretty confident in saying 1985 was the worst year of the series, by a good margin. The battle with the dream-eating Tapir was the only highlight, otherwise it’s fully embraced its goofiness and horniness in a way that both really don’t gel with my tastes. The only thing I’ll give it credit for is I’ve quite warmed to Aoi being the winning girl by the end - if it happens, then it wouldn’t bump it up too high though, the damage has already been done in having to read everything there already is. I compared this to Nue’s Exorcist last time, which I think is still largely true, but now that’s offensive to even Nue’s Exorcist, even. Grade: E

Baoh
by Hirohiko Araki (1984-85) - I went on a journey with this one. The first volume (1984 content) I found to be pretty trite stuff for the reasons I mentioned last time. The second half totally won me over though, and by the end I was a little bit moved, actually? My theory is the cancellation notice allowed the rescue to feel like a fitting emotional climax and provided a focus where there seemed to be none. By the end, I could see a few moments of influence that would later be re-used in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure as well. Jumps from E-tier to C-tier (could be higher if I was going to be swayed more by the good stuff on average). Grade: C

Black Knight Bat
by Buichi Terasawa (1985) - The context of this manga is more interesting than the manga itself. The full colour version is the one available digitally now, but it ends with a colour page done in 1985 that Buichi Terasawa that was the first manga (or comic) created on a computer, using CG. And apparently he created the term ‘digital manga’ as well? You get the sense that he really feels like a pioneer in this space from the afterward, which on a technical level is quite true and makes it a notable read. Sadly, the series itself is filled with ridiculous design, stupid plots, infantile world building, and basically leaves no lasting impression despite its unique history. Just really, really bad. Grade: F

Now to go back to the 70s titles that need read: Kochikame (as much as Manga Million has to read, until end of 1979) and Kinnikuman with its final arc (of the original run). Keeping up with the Put it All in the Ring translations now, which are reaching the end of 1980; this is another case of a series where what I thought was a shoddy beginning ended up still being the more successful part of the series, because of how ridiculous (and formulaic) it ends up becoming.

Anyway, votes for this issue:

Top 5 of Issue #49:
1. Akane-banashi
2. Ichi the Witch
3. Cannon Master
4. Roku's House of Oddities
5. Sakamoto Days
Top 7:
6. RuriDragon
7. Kagurabachi

Good:
8. One Piece
9 Me & Roboco
10. The Ura Files
11. Under Doctor
12. WITCH WATCH
13. Class 2-B: The Hero Destroyerz
14. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
15. Nue's Exorcist
16. Someone Hertz
17. Animal Signal

Just fine:
18. Hal Formula
19. Shinobi Undercover

There's enough material to work another two or three arcs. Fugitive ninjas making a big move on Pubsec and getting wiped won't end the manga: Kawasemi has basically set up the fact that Pubsec is just as shady and could very well become antagonists of their own arc. There's no reason to try to finish the story here when it's basically the first major story arc involving a much larger cast.

Yeah, I feel like Shinobi, much like most other Jump "successful" action series, will last like 4.5-5.5 years in the end. That seems to be the sweet spot lately. Something about that 235-285 chapter mark is appealing to the average jump mangaka lol. I can only really see Akane as the next obvious series to break past chapter 300. Even ichi or kagurabachi have the chance of ending before then.

Shinobi definitely feels like it's hitting that sweet spot alongside Nue who's resolving a lot of major plotlines in these ideal chapter counts. Akane's got 2 of the 3 rakugos down, so I expect it to finish within this time skip. But it's setting up major battles against the older generation in Urara and Issho, so it could stretch it out if it wants to. Ichi I see as a 500 chapter long runner given Osamu Nishi's track record. And Kagurabachi feels like it'll be shorter given Hokazono's complications with publishing. It won't be cancelled, but I think he'll hurry it up into an earlier conclusion than planned.

I don't think it's a rule that all manga series have to end with more than 200 chapters, regardless of whether they're successful or not. Honestly, I think if Shinobi Undercover ended with 140 or 150 chapters, that would be fine.

If Nishi is allowed to, Ichi will go on for more than a decade. Usazaki's health and interest in the series will basically be the main factor to decide how long it'll run for. I mention interest because she often mentions wanting to work on new stuff and write her own manga.

Every other battle manga, yeah, most likely hitting around 250 chapters. Akane will easily go over 300.

There's no reason to try to finish the story here when it's basically the first major story arc involving a much larger cast.
As payback for your Nue comment this week, I'll say this whole post sounds like alien language to me.
