Ok so why is it Houshing Engi a good manga? I might give it a try if it sounds appealing enough

Well, Black Cat in the covers looked like something cool, until I read it, all of it, 20 volumes, and it was total shit, so now I have my reservations when someone points me to a manga that´s good but has a bad anime. Sorry. So tell me please, why Houshing Engi is a good manga? What´s its appeal?

It doesn´t help that the anime had one job: Introduce anime original elements, instead of adapting 10 chapters in 12 episodes. Be happy you manga fans, cause I´m not.
