can we leave this "kiyoshi isn't getting axed because usui is odas former assistant" bs in the past? Especially on Reddit this is everywhere. Ryou Ishiyama, Haruto Ikezawa, Yuusaku Shibata, Daiki Ihara and many more failed despite being former Oda assistants. Heck even Takamasa Moue's Ole Golazo. Kiyoshi is here and being promoted because it has earned its mainstay spot, name 2 series from 2025 that outsold kiyoshi (modulo doesnt count cause duh). No offense to you btw. :super

ENTER

And technically Under Doctor because it would fall under Winter 2025 if we're using anime-style calendars.

Not gonna happen. Nue is much bigger than Kiyoshi.

It's not about hating Kiyoshi, I literally defended it here before in discussions about the axe. Makes no sense to axe it, it does better than almost all new series and it'll get its anime at some point announced next year probably. It's all about Saito's TOC being an unreliable mess and his reluctance to support some series, while he's more than glad than support others for reasons we don't know.

My guess would be he's biased towards his series, Kagurabachi is the 2nd best seller and he often has it in the back, meanwhile Ichi and Hertz are always in the top. Or how he had Shinobi at the same tier as the main hits in the last group cover and had it all over Jump Festa, but couldn't give Nue even a booth.

when Nue gets more color pages, advertisement and tons of merchandise,
It still ranks worse. Literally last issue it got the color page thrown into the bottom, while Kiyoshi got a top 4. Kiyoshi also got a 2nd anniversary cover while Nue got a single page. And we all know which is significantly more popular. And merch should even go against your argument because most of it isn't coming from Shueisha. Nue gets merch from third party companies because it actually sells stuff, Jump isn't the company making Nue perfume lines or hosting cafés.

From what I could gather via a translating app, it seems to me that only two are exocist-themed one-shots. With one of them being about a death metal exocist.

The Kiyoshi discussion is a bit tiresome, if I’m being frank, if only because of how recycled it feels. I’m at the point where I know it and the other ones we’re talking about around it are gonna survive just fine so I don’t mind just having fun with all of them and hoping for some amount of vague balance. If it were a matter of Kiyoshi getting some other promising series axed then that’d be something else but we’re well past that point, and all these convos about fairness/toc/treatment still always conclude with “we can’t see the full picture so we don’t know for sure” so it feels really fruitless to get riled up and at each others’ throats about it.

Anyways, I actually quite like the Shinobi color page, especially since that is just not at all what is happening currently. Roku’s cover and spread are pretty fun too, if a bit humble.

For an adventure series, the manga is heavily character focused. I think the extreme lack in worldbuilding is a big detriment to the series. It's very shallow despite all the cool setup in it's world design.

There's also no proper goal in the series. Bharat and Ur are just training and moving from town to town to help people in distress. The story is still on auto pilot.
Extreme lack of world building 6 chapters in. What are you even talking about? Not every series is going to have the MC want to be the PK or Hokage right from chapter 1. Look at Bleach, no end goal for Ichigo for multiple arcs, no world building just fighting Hollows in Katakura Town. Ichi the Witch is another example. I would say it's weakest point is the lack of actual world building, tho we have been to multiple cities/villages. Also, the WHM was not introduced as a sort of end goal until many chapters after it was introduced (introduction chapter 15). So why do these 2 aspects bring Cannon Masters down for you while other series can thrive and survive by using them?

First time doing full proper comments on everything in a while! This was a really good issue too.

Issue 35 Votes/Comments:

1: Kagurabachi - I know we’re not even remotely near the main plot here but by golly it was worth the wait. This chapter took a peeler to my heart and mended it back together in one fell swoop. If this is the only time we get to witness romance in this series I will still be satisfied because we are having a whole feast here. (also wonder if the redness of his eyes indicates his sorcery)

2: Sakamoto Days - Okay, I was NOT expecting this to be the result of Sakamoto falling down functionally dead. I am very here for this final boss phase though, and wonder if Sakamoto getting back up will have something to do with the mental image breaking. That, or Uzuki by becoming Sakamoto will stop being able to kill people? Lot of fun ways to spin this, very good.

3: One Piece - Confirming people’s suspicions about what Imu’s swords are, which gets me super curious about how each one maps to each family. Also opens the question of if there’s a Nefertari sword out there because if so then it sounds like Vivi might solo Mihawk (I jest, I jest). Very juicy stuff though, and I’ll be curious to see if Scopper’s capable of keeping his son at the rare status of 2 living parents.

4: Witch Watch - Woah. I’m starting to thibk Shinohara is using this chapter as his chance to let out all the gory stuff he wanted to draw, cuz this felt like several levels more visually dark than we’re ever used to seeing in this series, maybe with the exception of a few small moments. Can’t say I predicted anything to go the way it did this chapter, but I’ll be curious to see if there’s much more meat to the flashback since we have a pretty good scope of how things went down already now. (Even if he does revive Roswitha is she even gonna be chill with it? She might just bring Nico back I think.)

5: Akane-banashi - I was expecting Issho to do his thing in this arc, but I definitely wasn’t expecting it to become another duel! This will be a fun way to bear witness to the art of both of these masters whom we have not properly seen on stage at full force, and ESPECIALLY to see the motion becoming of what is functionally our final boss. I still lowkey want Akane and Kaisei to non-romantically hug and kiss each other after that duel but that is an unrelated matter. Good stuff.

6: Nue’s Exorcist - I was expecting some potential for Shitotsu upscale but by golly that is an insane looking transformation at the end. I’m starting to think she might be stronger than Gakuro in the immediate moment given the fact he just got brand new powers. Yagyo being a former exorcist does make me wonder how much he plays into the history of things, but for t immediate moment, he makes for a really good creepy threatening force.

7: Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi - Keeping the training arc appropriately brief, understandable. Harkening back to Kiyoshi’s scared nature that was much more apparent at the start helps explain where he’s at better, so this was good set-up to propel him forward.

8: Hal Formula - Idk why but the way Michael Schumacher was smiling there looked almost like a Dandadan villain, haha. As for the actual chapter, some good payoff for training, as well as an interesting new person on the scene (almost thought he was a girl, it’s giving Hiruhiko) who I’m sure will be a rival to face later. Will be interested in how the race is handled from a story perspective now that we’ve seen the whole track and he’s in the pole position.

9: Shinobi Undercover - I guess the foolish part of me thought we would navigate through this arc without it pivoting back to battle… but it does make logical sense. I only wonder how far back this will set the romance progression (not that I was really expecting any real confessions to be happening this arc). The comments regarding the mud are also making me question if Kijibato is on the bad guy’s team…

10: Cannon Master - Good character dynamics established, and I can’t help but feel like something fishy is going on with this minister. Also, I wasn’t aware the Regiliths were this organized and intelligent a group of beings? Maybe my fault for forgetting something from chapter 1. Also also, I just realized there’s some pseudo-humans casually part of the civilians like the cat lady at the end? Interesting.

Others:

Animal Signal - Interesting way to leverage his intel and her ability to socialize to do a sort of teamwork maneuver. I wonder how much longer she can go on without explaining that she reads thoughts.

Roku’s House of Oddities - Something I hadn’t really considered, but I’ll be curious to see if Roku’s able to talk Johan down from obliteration, since this seems to be staging things such that Roku will take the curse home. I still don’t think this will pivot the series into battle shonen proper, but it’s not unreasonable to let it wet its toes in some more battle-y conflict.

Ichi the Witch - Bro really thinks he’s part of the team… but no, this could make for some interesting dialogue if we’re taking a single Magikeeper to get a feel for them more. I could see an arc focused on Ichi with the Magikeepers going over smoother with this added context rather than if Ichi had been dumped into it straight away.

Under Doctor - Chapter 1 callback! That’s pretty neat; I only hope the quickened pace of the series doesn’t rob us from getting to spend more time chatting with Ishiguro before we have to zoom along to the next thing. Given the title of the chapter I also wonder if we’ll be seeing more wacky complications with this event.

Ruridragon - This kinda feels like it went at breakneck speed with the pace of the reaction shots and whatnot. I can’t say I’m unsatisfied that we’re wrapping this fight up now, though, as I’m very curious to see how the actual conversation with the dragon goes and what the fallout of that will be.

Class 2B - A reasonable bit of episodic nonsense on our hands here. I had fun with it, and will be curious to see how this trajectory of Valaris’ continues.

Kinato’s Magic - I was banking on them doing a Linae-princess swap or there being some relation here, so I am unsurprised, but this is fun. Kinato taking the big fighty dude completely unseriously is entertaining as well, and maybe a bit of a self-aware move on the part of the series.

Drawn to the Fire - Got out-gimmicked, huh? Guess this will spur Mizuhara to come up with something new in the heat of the moment to get around these things.

Someone Hertz - A fun way to have them both grow and overlap without even hinging on the radio prompt this time. Mimei’s subordinate was a fun little add.

Me & Roboco - A reasonable tribute chapter, and fairly funny throughout. The last panel was a good punchline.

World building will come. To me, a great fantasy adventure series doesn’t necessarily come straight out with world building but slowly teases the potential of it. When the series is solidified, it can then start teasing the world out. The One Piece world and grand line was teased out as well as other great adventure series like Toriko and even HxH (which took hundreds of chapters to really start showing the world).

The biggest issue I think cannon master will face is that the sand/desert backgrounds all look the same. Each city and architecture feels the same. He has to figure out how to differentiate each desert/ruined deserted location better or introduce different environment biomes. The concern extends to the villain and monsters that look the same (I hate the monster villains since it robs us of characterization of villains). The higher levels are said to be more intelligent so I hope we can start to see that soon.

That being said, I unfortunately think canon master will fail. Fantasy adventures more than any other series need rave excitement to get off the ground and I just don’t think cannon master has that with the JP audiences especially since HAL seemed better review and it got a middling first ToC. Hopefully we get our next fantasy adventure hit in the next batch 😭

Kiyoshi double color page? Damn, I’m dreaming!

But I have a general question for everyone (haters included, even the unregistered users who just lurk here):
Do you only jump on the bandwagon when it suits you? 👀
I haven’t forgotten all the times people trashed the manga and wished it would flop, from Chapter 18 up to now
I can only speak for myself. Feelings about current jump titles I am reading. I will go over initial impressions and where I am at currently. These are listed in order of oldest to newest not how much I enjoy each series.
1. One Piece - Back in 2004-2011 I was a One Piece Hater. My introduction to One Piece was through the 4Kids dub on Saturday mornings. Needless to say, this gave me a very poor view and opinion of the series as a whole. When I saw it at #1 on MAL, I was like "how is this childish series so popular?" In 2011 I gave it another try and by episode 26 I was hooked. 15 years later it's the reason I still read anything in Jump, and it is my all-time favorite series. The anime is still hard to watch but the mange is my most anticipated piece of media on a weekly basis.
2. Kagurabachi - I'm not going to lie....the series feels overhyped to me. The characters are just ugly to look at and had to differentiate most of the time. I know it's Jumps new big thing, but it is has never lived up to the hype for me. The most recent arc has been pretty strong, but the characters are still hard to tell apart and are just ugly to look at.
3. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi - One of my favorite current reads in the magazine. I have enjoyed it from the very start. I like that it is getting 2 color pages, seems to me that with how well the last 2 arc have been handled the timing is right.
4. Ichi the Witch -I loved the first chapter and then I felt it jumped off a cliff. The characters weren't working well together, the plot wasn't coming together, and the world building was (and still isn't) happening. The world building is the worst part of this if you ask me, we have a bunch of unconnected destinations. It feels like one of those games where the locations are names on a menu. But the series has grown on me tremendously over the last few months and arcs. The characters are working better together and while the world building isn't getting any better at least the overall plot has been. I went from thinking it should be cancelled to it being one of my favorites and anticipated reads each week.
5. Shinobi Undercover - This series just isn't for me. The rom-com part of the series is severely lacking and forced (especially in this latest arc). The art is the best thing the series has going for it, but with that being said the choreography of the fights is lacking. It is sometime hard to parse what is happening, the author doesn't know how to use the paneling to lead you through the action sequences (which is sad because the fights should be the highlight). The characters are very flat and one dimensional, and the plot is plodding and underdeveloped. The worldbuilding is nearly nonexistent 90+ chapters in. Did not like it from the begining and it hasn't grown on me the way series like Ichi, Roku, or Hertz has
6. Someone Hertz - I've come to the conclusion that this series just isn't for me. The latest chapter has been my absolute favorite and it's the one chapter where there was nothing related to the radio show. We got a real slice of life chapter with no bad jokes, and it worked. If they continue with more of this, I might have to change my tune but for now, it still isn't really my cup of tea.
7. Under Doctor - While it seems to be surviving and thriving, my feelings remain the same, this series is not good. It lacks direction and the characters are not very well written. It did have its best chapter 2 weeks ago, but that chapter was even brought down by the siblings they introduced and how that part of the chapter was handled. T
8. Kinato's Magic - I have liked and enjoyed Kinato since the beginning. It has fallen off a bit during the last arc which is sad to see. Overall, I think it had the right idea from the start. It is an action, adventure, battle, shonen, which for whatever reason do not seem to fair very well in the pages of Jump anymore. It was my favorite from its batch, and I will be sad to see it go.
9. Roku's House of Oddities - I was not a fan of Agravity Boys or Cipher Academy, but I went into this with little to no expectations. I was not sold on it at first but over the last month I would say the series has really come into it's own and grown on me. The characters, their interactions, and relationships really carry this series for me. I like that we have already gotten a concrete end goal for the MC to work towards. If it lasts (and it should) I could see the ending being bitter-sweet ala Assassination Classroom.
10. Drawn to the Fire - From the jump it did not like this series. The character designs are ugly and unimpressive. The story is okay but the execution of the sport of basketball is severely lacking. The characters are pretty one note, and their interactions and relationships are nothing special. The rival team was introduced to early and the main team (that was incomplete) was able to pull a win? The author should have had them lose their lead when the other teams starters entered the game, it would add so much more to the eventual rematch. Just a lot of bad wriring choices if you ask me.
11. Class 2-B Hero Destroyer - This manga has been pretty bad. I will say since they moved away from the shit jokes the series has greatly improved but it still isn't anything special. If it survives it will be solely based on the author's name recognition because if anyone else was writing this it is clear it would be ending soon.
12. Animal Signal - The first few chapters started hot but has cooled off slightly for me. The animal facts are good, but the overall plot and characters are lacking a bit for me. I think the two main characters are fine, but the lack of supporting cast is bothering me. The romantic elements have been okay so far, but I like Syd Craft much better than this series.
13. Hal Formula - I did not read GGG so I had not expectations going into this. That being said I am quite surprised how much I am enjoying this series. I kind of wish the Manager guys was introduced and handled differently but I do like that he may lead to our first rivalry. The younger brother isn't doing a whole lot for me (or the series), I do hope the author finds a place for him in the story.
14. Cannon Master - I've enjoyed it since chapter 1 and see it only getting better with each passing week. I would love for this to rank higher than the others from its batch but knowing current jump it will likely end up below them. It's an adventure battle shonen and it is doing it right so far. I hope this manga lives, it definitely belongs in the pages of Jump.

Issue #35:
1. One Piece #1189
2. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi #102
3. Someone Hertz #43 - This is certainly my favorite chapter of the series to date. If they gave us more of this, I'd probably be right there with everyone else. Great chapter for Hertz.
4. Ichi the Witch #92 - Fujime is my type of female antagonist and made the chapter for me. The bullet witch should not be getting this opportunity here, the writing could have been better. It's too shonen, the Association shouldn't have just taken her at her word without an investigation or something else happening first.
5. Cannon Master #6
6. Kagurabachi 126
7. Roku's House of Oddities #16
8. Hal Formula #7
9. Kinato's Magic #25
10. Animal Signal #8
11. Shinobi Undercover #91
12. Drawn to the Fire #15 - Just end this and give us something else to try please.
13. Under Doctor #26 - Just one week after its best chapter it falls right back down to the bottom of my rankings.
14. Class 2-B Hero Destroyerz #14

I agree with you, with this type of adventure series the world building should happen organically and not be dumped into the first few chapters. The three series you chose are great examples of this. OP's islands felt very disconnected and disjointed at the start but that makes sense when we start to understand how the world works.

Your second paragraph made me think of early bleach. The Hollows (Monters) seemed unorganized and unintelligent, then we found out they are organized and have a hierarchy as the world grew and expanded. I like that they introduced higher level Regiliths known as Demons gives them room to grow with this antagonist group.

I hope it doesn't fail but my current track record with new series I enjoy in the magazine is not giving me much confidence.

Mate, most of these manga aren't making it past 15 chapters. The best adventure series out there already give you enough worldbuilding to spark your curiosity and establish a clear goal within the first 3 chapters.

MC wants to be a hokage? Bleach? None of these are elements of an adventure series nor an adventure series. Why even bring it up lmfao?

Looks to me like you just want to talk about bleach.

"There's also no proper goal in the series." I was literally replying to something you said in the post I quoted. I can see this will go nowhere.

You literally said "Extreme lack of world building 6 chapters in. What are you even talking about?" and then went off a tangent to talk about my 2nd point. Thats it? Ad hominem and nothing else. Okay.

Shouldn't have replied with a dumb example for the sake of bringing up bleach when ichigo's clear lack of an established goal is still a big detriment to his character even by the end of the series so don't try to turn it around to make it one of his quality trait.

Oh hey, look, here's a series that not only set up it's worldbuilding, it also established it's main goal in just the first 2 chapters.

The point of bringing Bleach up was to show you that a clear established goal and a lack of world building early do not necessarily kill a series. It is a valid counter to your comment about an "Extreme" lack of world building 6 chapters in was an extreme take.

Main goal was stated in chapter 2 the world building only really started in the last 30 or so chapters and exploded in the last 15.

That's not what I meant dude. I meant the ToC placing.
Yeah. This may mean Kiyoshi is more popular than series like Ao no Hako while it lasted. Kiyoshi may receive even more votes than Kagurabachi, if you go through the color pages and placements.
