Where did we get the info that Yozakura season 2 was unplanned?

I had this information in mind, but can't find a quote anywhere now, my bad. Though, considering the timing, I don't think Shueisha would have asked specifically for four cours for Yozakura and this was probably more on it having good TV ratings.

Most Shueisha stuff at least gets two cours, but Ayakashi Triangle only got a single one, Roboco only got a short anime and a movie and I think it's very likely Elusive Samurai's anime ends with Season 2 as I don't see Cloverworks keeping up with it for several years while they struggle to even schedule production for their biggest hits like Bocchi the Rock and Dress Up Darling.

Funny you say that, since Shonen Magazine is having it the hardest compared to Jump, Sunday, or even Champion when it comes to battle shonen, as right now they are considered more of a romcom magazine by quite a few, and they are desperately trying to fill in the battle shonen gap with less success than most right now, which is saying something.

Depends on timing. If you consider 2025 and 2026, Jump didn't find a single new hit battle manga. Both hits they got are slice of life, one a romcom (Hertz) and the other more of a comedy (Roku). Magazine at least got Yaergnacht in 2025 and there's still a chance one of their newest batch does well, meanwhile Jump just had a batch with 3 battle manga with two already axed (Alien Headbutt and Kinato) and another one on thin ice (Under Doctor). Cannon Master is also apparently the worst performing manga of its batch even though it's competing with another slice of life comedy and a spokon.

If you push back to 23 and 24, then yeah, Jump found way more hits than their rivals with Nue, Kagurabachi, Kiyoshi, Ichi and Shinobi. But these were all either released or produced under Nakano, Saito's era still has no hit battle manga.

Funnily enough, Sunday has the best hit rate in battle manga out of the trio since 2025 with Parashoppers and Silver Mountain. But everyone is struggling to find success with battle manga.

Best current manga in each magazine?

Jump: Nue.
Magazine: Yumene.
Sunday: Sleepy Princess.
Champion: Iruma.

Not sure about others, but we're at the point the lack of anime announcement disappoints me more than I get happy about this. It's nice it's doing well, but considering the line-up with all main series ending and the newbies doing bad, Kawae can probably go for as long as he wants, so I care a bit less about where it's placed.

I might be standing a little in contrast here but I don’t know that we’re quite at the point of being able to cry unfairness towards Nue being unannounced for an anime yet. Several of Jump’s recent hit series had their announcements in the upcoming realm of chapters; Sakamoto Days of all things on chapter 168, YozaFam on 160, Witch Watch on 167, and most recently Akane at 170. I’m not saying this is a good norm, but it is becoming normal to some degree, so Nue being at chapter 157 with nothing, while starting to cut it close, is still within the expected margin for the current state of Jump.

Now if 2 more months pass and there’s still no anime in sight… yeah, that would be about a fair time to start growing agitated. I only hope the reason behind the long wait is for quality’s sake rather than them just ignoring it.

Other than Jump and Sunday I'm not really reading anything from the other big shonen magazines but I'll do this anyway with some fudging of the bounds.

Jump: HxH (excluding that Akane)
Sunday: Kai-hen Wizards but I'm behind
Magazine: Kaijin Fugeki is the only Magazine series I'm reading but I'm super duper behind so I would barely count it
Champion: Not currently reading anything in Champion but I am reading Kesa mo Yuraretemasu in Bessatsu Champion so I'll say that lol

-Well, Kinato's Magic ended, not going to go too deep into it but it sucks, i already checked the chapter and it got me a bit emotional, the series, in my opinion, 100% deserved way better than this, it wasn't perfect obviously, Amemiya did mistakes, specially trying to be My Hero Academia for a while but the problem is that much before this when the series was really good it was already in the bottom, this is what i don't accept, even when the series was good it felt like it never had a chance, and also the fact it never got a color page despite surviving a round, selling decently well and getting a reprint, it's just bizarre, but not much of a point in going on and on saying the same things, it's done, screw the readers, i wish the best for Amemiya and that he returns with his 3rd tentative but honestly, i don't know if he should try another battle shounen, it's pretty clear he enjoys drawing fanservice, he should try something like that ecchi demon one shot "Maou-sama wa Ase wo Kaku" instead of another typical battle shounen!

I thought that it did have potential, but I knew it was dead in the water from the beginning. Why? Because I felt it lacked an emotional hook for readers to latch on. It had some good ideas on paper, but that was it. There was nothing about it that could scream “KINATO”.

Ruri is an overt exception to the rule both due to it's popularity and very unique circumstances. Kagurabachi's earlier slot can also be attributed to its significantly greater popularity over Nue (especially factoring in the global impact). My point wasn't to determine an average, just to point out that in this era of Jump even things that sell 100k like Sakamoto Days don't get anime announced until 168 chapters, so it should not come as much of a surprise that the same is occuring to Nue. And for all the similarly aged or newer series than Nue that have gotten anime announced, it's either because their manga ended already (Chojo and Kill Blue) or they have a much more prominent role in the public eye of the magazine, like Kagurabachi.

I will clarify that I do agree with other people's sentiments that other magazines like Magazine are doing a much better job with getting anime to release while the series is still flourishing and not towards the end of its life. This is a problem that permeates through more than just WSJ, look to Jump+; Kaiju no. 8 barely received a second 12-ep season before the manga ended, Hell's Paradise was long over before the anime came out, Chainsaw Man had only 12 episodes and a movie when it ended, and to get a bit smaller, Magilumiere only had 1 season out by it's end, and Kindergarten Wars is in its final arc with the anime still having not aired. I'm sure there are even more examples I'm not thinking of.

It does not inspire a great amount of hope in me that this is becoming so common for Shueisha. Nevertheless, I have come to expect it, so Nue's lack of anime does not cause any more stir in me than Akane's did up until its announcement.

Drawn to the Fire could be ending next week too, it's no confirmation but the chapter does have some ending vibes and the name of the chapter is basically the name of the manga with different words:

Chapter name ナツとホタルカゴ = Summer and Firefly Cage

Manga name 夏と蛍籠 = Summer and Firefly Cage

I believe action WSJ manga is getting harder to get anime. Not because of popularity reason but after KnY and JJK, everyone is expecting a WSJ manga, especially action ones, to have the top notch animation quality, so now those that can do it all are too dying in their schedule to accept more projects

That may have merit but it could be also for budget reasons or even the pressure from up coming new anime studios or even older ones in delivery of a good anime. But I also think that in particular is not really true when Yozakura Family, that has action, is made by a studio not know for it but it did the best it could and hey it’s doing the job right.

Silver Link may have fallen short lately as Kadokawa's slave but it had Fate/Kaleid, Busou Shojo and definitely more. It can handle action series just fine with properly directed fighting scene (that makes sense) and decent quality as long as the audience isnt demanding for flashy, over the top sakuga

Silver Link may have fell short lately as Kadokawa's slave but it had Fate/Kaleid, Busou Shojo and definitely more. It can handle action series just fine with properly directed fighting scene (that makes sense) and decent quality as long as the audience isnt demanding for flashy, over the top sakuga

WSJ (and overall): One Piece. During break weeks, it would be either HxH (if it’s running) or Kiyoshi (Akane is great too)

WYJ: might be dogsred. Kingdom hits higher highs though

WSM: between Blue Lock and Gachiakuta. I guess BL. SLF is very underrated.

WSS: parashoppers. Most underrated series imo. Red blue is sneaky good time tho

WCM: Iruma but I also really like Tougen anki

Jump +: war of adults

Ura Sunday: kengan

Zenon: RoR

I'm not sure if this is a new thing, but all new battle shonen are doing bad at Jump, Magazine and Sunday, while slice of life or romance series are doing well. Futari Bus, Utsuranain, Umine Inn, Someone Hertz, Roku, etc. So I don't think it's that surprising it's doing this well TOC-wise, but just like Ichi, Saito probably just wants to highlight his era's biggest hits more, so they get permanently placed at the top.

It's hilarious seeing social media people saying "he got desperate and started doing fanservice scenes". More like he was holding himself back early and when it was clear it wouldn't survive, he just did what he wanted for real.

I do think Kinato was based on Maou Ase though. It does feel like something he and an editor worked to turn that oneshot into a battle manga, the seitai magic is basically a mobile version of the bath effect from the oneshot. I agree he should stop trying battle and go for a romcom or comedy.

It’s a (relatively) very depressing time we’re in with a massive lack of creativity and audience willingness to accept battle shonens and more importantly action adventure shonens (with new worlds) are just getting axed one after another. I mean seriously when was the last time we had a really cool original new worlds that you want to jump into or a power system that is so original or cool or even a main character with a unique power or ability instead of generic strength? Just a lot of lack of creativity.

Very late chapter reviews for the double issue:

What's with everyone and their grandmother losing an arm at the end of the chapter? I know coincidences happen, but THREE times? And it wasn't even the usual suspects.

1) Kiyoshi: This is reminding me a lot of the Blue Academy arc in Ron Kamonohashi (though in that case, the roles were reversed). This one'll probably be a bit simpler though, 'cause our two cinnamon roles don't strike me as great detectives. Regardless, I love mysteries. Normally Hagrid would be my first suspect, but in this case I don't believe it. Tenno would also be too obvious, and the rebel kid sounds like a red herring... I'd like to get to know the teachers next, please.

2) Dr: So the bar scene at the end of last chapter was just a flashforward and we're getting the rest of the story now? This is exactly what I was asking for, so I'm not complaining, but I do wonder if it was planned like this or if the author somehow changed his mind halfway through.

3) Ichi: While the adults were talking plans, the dog went off chasing things. Great jump scare there at the end, glad our boy got to do something (even though Ichi already had his knife out, ready to chop some fingers). I wonder why he was planning on going with the other team at first?

4) Shinobi: They should take it to black mud school. It's still impressive how much personality OP 9 gives off with just a voice. Also lore! That was interesting, I wonder what the next squad no. 1 is going to look like.

5) KGB: That's dedication. And people can stop whining about Shiba not doing enough, too. (Surprisingly, no arms were lost in this one.)

WW: That page where they charge in is lovely. Moi pulling up trees was pretty cool, too. The result was predictable, of course.

OP: I'm a little lost, but good job, old man.

Cannon: I'm confused. What happened? Who's the new guy? Did he lose an arm?

Akane: I've rarely seen Akane so surprised. Is she shocked about the breach in tradition, or because the comedian is doing a tragedy?

Drawn: Lol, that's one way to wake someone up. His backstory makes sense, though it's one we've seen a few too many times before.

Animal: Nice misdirect there. The intent is good, but these kids really need to use their brains more often.

Nue: He doesn't look like the monster from the flashback in the first chapter, that's for sure...

Sakamoto: The comments on this are so one-sided.

Kinato: That was easy. His magic is pretty much a solution for all problems now.

Roboco: Okay, that was actually kinda cute. Just the last page though.

Destroyerz: The new kid reminds me of Karma.

Formula: People really like animal imaginery in their sports manga. Even when the athletes are barely moving.

Hertz: How did the smart atlethic popular kid end up so woefully insecure?

Roku: No need to wonder why those losers are insecure. At least the president is acting reasonable this time around (I would've loved those gifts as a kid. Hell, I'd love them now).

(Not ranked) Quit laughing, Shijima: This has a lot of worldbuilding, but the story itself is pretty basic (and not very original... well, except for the sudden superhero origin story). It works well as a one-shot, but I don't think adding another exorcist manga to the neverending pile of demon hunter wannabees is the best choice right now.

2: Ichi the Witch – Dess being aware that she thinks super highly of herself is chuckle worthy too. OH! Sukemaru is the invisibility Majik. Makes sense now, but it was still a funny gag when they were ignoring it right after entering. The image of Ichi potentially sussing out Sukemaru was terrifying, good thing he’s on our side lol. I wonder who, if anyone, is gonna acquire Sukemaru…Kumugi might be good since she can support whilst invisible and isn’t a fighter whereas with Dess and Ichi being fighters, I feel like it’d be op to have invisibility for them, especially Dess..but also Ichi’s whole thing is hunting, so being invisible and sneaky suits that. HOLY SHIT right as I was talking about my main problem with the series so far being Gokuraku fading into the background recently on here, he IMMEDIATELY gets a moment to shine in this arc by saving Ichi from Hakari, wow. It’s like Nishi listened to me (jk). Great chapter.

I still think Dess is partially faking it (not to deceive people, but in a "fake it till you make it" kind of way).

Would Kumugi even be able to acquire majiks? I forgot if you need to be a certain rank (or have a certain power level) to do that.

Drawn to the Fire – Nice to see where Natsu started out with basketball. Ahh heavy is the head that wears the crown. Being so determined to get better that you’re seen as a “try hard” is relatable, I completely understand how Natsu feels tbh. It’s nice to see how Mizuhara brought back his passion. Honestly, good chapter tbf. Though, and I’m no basketball expert, but I feel like bonking the ball off someone’s head would be a foul, no? Maybe not, idk lol.

I've seen a lot of people commenting that throwing the ball at your opponent's head would indeed be a foul... but Natsu is not an opponent. Can you get punished for hitting a teammate?

It's more a technical foul depending on how the ref interprets your intent when you throw the ball. If you're doing it because you want to restart your dribble, trying to save it from going out of bounds, getting space to get a shot off, basically anything that gets you positional advantage, it's fine (though no guarantee the defender isn't getting pissed and your opponent can still just steal the ball if they have good reaction time). If you do it because you're trying to hurt the defender or just make them mad, than you're getting called for it. In street ball and less structured forms of basketball, it'd basically be "no blood no foul" if you did it.

As for hitting a teammate, they're not going to call a foul if you do a normal foul. It's common to do things like push your teammate into place on defense if they can't make it to their position on time, accidentally elbow or land on your teammate's foot when going for a rebound, etc. If you start actually fighting a teammate, yeah you can still get punished for it and probably get ejected. Though that's irrelevant in this case because Natsu was his defender during that play (it was a flashback)
