I think GFC is dead and replaced by Jump Future.

Speaking of that, doesn't anyone feel at all surprised that Grey Keys launched? I thought the author would go with something else like what Hideaki Nabe did.

Am almost betting we get an author from this year's jump future debuting a series. Likely going to be Yuta Kato if am being honest, if not than its either the blood marriage author or the Shanghai Ronren author.
This is something really clear to anyone who reads many titles of all these magazines. It's insane how far behind Jump is art-wise, it has to be a mix of the editors not caring much about art quality and awful schedules, but it just looks bad in general.

Jump won't do it, but they should have a few more series in the line-up and give more breaks like WSM and WSS.
I won't complain if that happened, a healthy schedule does wonders to one's body.

Just wish it was already done so some could rest if needed.

I hope things get for them I really do, no nonsense on my end. Just genuinely wanting the best.

Not really. Grey Keys had decent reception on Twitter while Nabe's one shot was one of the most ignored ones. I was more surprised that Nabe got serialized first if anything. Hokami's also not really the type to do a series without a basis first it seems. Higuma had the original one shot submitted for rewards, ran as a one shot in Jump Giga (not sure if this was a different version from before or just a republish), and then as a miniseries in Jump Giga, before it got serialized in WSJ. I always assumed if Hokami came back, it'd be with Grey Keys.

Wasn't there like two more one shots that were popular as well? Zanki Vampire Slayer and another one.

Zanki and Sensei Fukoku were (way) above Grey Keys yeah. But the GFC has shown us they don't feel like letting the most successful one authors get their series first, so I'm not shocked that they ended up having to wait as well.

The crappy thing is that since I have no use for Twitter in my life I have zero idea as to who popular certain one shots in jump or those that participated in this year's Jump Future. The only one I know for a fact that was talked about was Blood Marriage the others I have zero idea.

I'm honestly surprised that we haven't seen any of the 3 remaining GFC Winners get serialized at all yet.
You think that after pretty much killing the GFC that we would see a few of them get serialized just to get it over with if the curse is still real or not over a series of batches, but we haven't heard from any of them at all, which really worries me.

They will serialize since it's pretty much the whole point of the contest (i think they probably sign a deal too) and why Jump wouldn't serialize them when non winners get, but the thing is that it's pretty obvious they just got over the whole "Let's serialize the winner one shot" thing since it hasn't work for 18 years since Beelzebub won and are taking their time to actually create the best work they can to debut, it worked greatly with Masaoki Shindo.

True.

Do you have someone in mind you are specifically rooting for from last year's Jump Future Project and this one? I know Hokami and Nabe debuted, with the former debuting this week and the latter having debuted last year so curious to hear your thoughts.

Was that Shindo's actual case or was it his idea? He mentioned before he only cared about battle manga, but recently started to enjoy stuff such as cute girls more. Serializing Ruri Dragon looked more like his taste and interests just changed.

I was devastated when Chojo was axed last summer but after the anime announcement I regained hope (or cope) that Numa would return sooner than later; somehow that wish came true, though I certainly didn't expect it to be with another artist
Ura had an amazing first chapter, even if it was just a reworked version of the oneshot; I'm a big fan of gyarus (partially thanks to Chojo itself (and also Cosmos but that's irrelevant)), and Ura fits very well as an entry into that archetype; people have compared it to Bokuyaba and I can definitely see that with Kibitsu and how much he takes after Ichikawa; I do like how Numa was able to make him a more respectable person to fit the romcom type a bit better (since this isn't explicitly a gag series like Chojo or Samon so you can't have protagonists act as asshole-ish as they did); since I have a bunch of other thoughts that I can't really put into words i'll just say that it was probably the best debut of the year (though 2B might edge it out a bit); if Numa and Kuroki keep it up I could easily see it end up the highlight of the year for me, manga-wise

On the other end of the spectrum, Drawn to the Fire ended and I just can't bring myself to care; I had some high hopes from the oneshot but it just ended up being "boring spokon #22" which sucks because virtually every spokon series from the past decade (except like 2 or 3) has been just that

It will be so damn hilarious if wsj just decide to serialize them all in one batch and see which curse is stronger

Bold prediction after the GFC winners haven’t shown up yet.

I would not go quite that far. I think the issue and thing that is important is that the magazine has to cater to a young audience but also have its sense of youth and giving the audience what they want but also what audiences want to see.

I want to see about that. Currently Jump has 20 titles running now. However HxH is almost finished with its batch of 10 then it will go back into hibernation. So that gives us 19, and around this time of the year is when the GFC comes out. So let’s see if that actually happens.

If it does happen, then we better see a GFC winner next batch, because not only would that be perfect promotion, it would also keep there from being too many unserialized winners

I think this race was for... highlighting how much Miharu cares about Haruka and that's what gives him motivation. Which yeah, fine, but I think that's basically his only characteristic besides liking to gamble with his life. This could be more interesting if there was internal conflict about how these aspects are naturally contradictory ("if I die, who will take care of him?"), but Terasaka feels too self absorbed by his own lines.

That's generally something I believe is an issue with his stories, he gets too deep into technicalities he finds interesting, but never questions if the readers care as well. His character writing hits a similar point where yes, you can notice he has some interesting ideas, but it's also too much of a laser vision about where they should go. Miharu's lack of interaction or interest in other drivers makes this racing manga feel like he's tackling speedruns and not in an environment that should be full of other cars and several interactions.

People said GGG's contemplative nature fit golf well, but it's now clear Terasaka takes sport too much as a challenge against oneself and I don't see it mixing well with Formula. I brought up Initial D here before as well and I agree with you, races are clashes, you need dynamics and conflicts to spice it up.

Sometimes you need the characters to live, breath and choose for themselves.
Was gonna reply earlier but got punked by the thread lock when I hit "post".

I think the whole "Make my little brother proud" is okay as an overall goal but that's more of a macro goal which shouldn't constantly be dwelled on with every race. I think sports, well, any manga really, should have macro and micro goals as they go through their arcs. Like Naruto wanting to be Hokage is a macro goal, then defeating Pain so he doesn't kill everyone is the micro goal that takes the focal point of the current arc. A lot of Miharu's thoughts are still on that macro goal, when what I believe would engage the reader to this race specifically is what he sets to achieve here. Every race needs to have a purpose, otherwise it reads like a filler.

I did go back and try to engage with what Terasaka was trying to write with the current race. It seems to be that Miharu and Hinokura are polar opposites in racing styles, with Miharu being instinctual and Hinokura being methodical, and having these styles clash. The biggest problem is that there isn't an inherent clash of interest or conflict between the two, they barely register each other as acquaintances. There's nothing to prove with them going head to head, and the only one with any contextual hunger to win this race is Hinokura who hasn't won first place, and got his potential first place win stolen by Miharu. That's also a very glaring weakness that sets Hinokura as the underdog to win this.

I guess trying to beat the guy you already beat in Chapter 1 makes the whole arc feel like filler? Hinokura isn't an obstacle or wall that needs to be overcome, it's a door you need to open one more time. And even if Miharu wins this race, there isn't this feeling of accomplishment given that there's nothing particularly big about going over him. Terasaka also spent more time going over the technicals in the race, rather than developing the framework of the story. I think most of the skills Miharu developed just goes over people's head because he never really had a struggle to acquire them to begin with.

A big issue that I feel a lot of these spokon are facing before the 10 chapter mark is having a decent starting arc. To me, the answer lies in the micro goal of the arc, and an antagonist that drives this micro goal. If we use Hal Formula, I'd feel that a good starting antagonist would be some smug dude that Miharu never beat, then have him beat Miharu's time in a race on the same circuit he won. It'd have that feeling that, "If he were in that race, Miharu would've lost." Then as a micro goal, I would've gone with something like, the smug dude's team is trying to poach a mechanic, and then he claims Miharu's not good enough for the mechanic's skills, the car's wasted on him, he only won through dumb luck and recklessness, bla bla bla. Bam, instant conflict.

A failure point for all these recent spokon is just firing up the reader to want to see this conflict go down. Too many of the starter antagonists lately are just, "Nice guy." And I get that realistically, there wouldn't be a jerk in most sports and team-based settings. But narratively, jerks drive conflict and spark an interest to see them taken down. It's better to develop a reader's hatred rather than leave them in indifference. And all the offerings lately are too scared to dare try making a reader hate a character. Wish more spokon would try the Seto Kaiba strategy of making a character so absurdly antagonistic and hateable that they loop right back around to being highly enjoyable.

I also liked your suggestion of having Miharu introspect about gambling with his life. I'd think a Whiplash-type story of obsession and self-destruction would've been interesting. With characters stoking his ego by telling him he'll become Michael Schumacher with his trajectory, and others begging him to consider his own life and the people around him. It would've been really unique and make every race a conflict of driving a wedge from the people who care about him and chasing glory through victory. In such a case, I would've extremely dumbed down the jargon and just give him some stupid shonen ability like, "Mystic Eyes of Death Perception" where he can see the lines and routes that lead to death if he doesn't execute his maneuvers properly, but are the most efficient routes of each turn. Easy to understand, easy to visualize, and provides a blanket to explain whatever new technique he finds. And easy to make the conflict revolve around, "Stop using those eyes."

Ahhhh. I really wanted to Terasaka to hit it out of the park with this one. I guess I'm just disappointed that it's worse than GGG, and doesn't really feel like a marked improvement. Sadness. The only real point of interest is the screaming death flags on Miharu for his brother who also has Haru in his name to take the stage with a decidedly more interesting (potential) story.

That's something i was going to comment weeks ago but ended up not doing, that picking a Weekly Shonen Magazine issue after checking Shonen Jump is just a whole experience, the difference in the art quality is no joke, feels like Shonen Jump is not a magazine made to be read in digital high quality because it gets so noticeable how at least half of the magazine authors are either dying or struggling to keep the art just consistent while on Weekly Shonen Magazine it's eye candy, every manga is fully finished, from the newbie to the veteran that is already in the 4th/5th weekly serialization, you don't see rushed art, rough drawing lines, no one seems to be struggling, and not only that, the overall drawing skill level of WSM artists are just higher than WSJ, how the hell is Oh! Great drawing weekly manga at 54yo with that level? It's insane!

And its honestly not only WSM, Weekly Shonen Sunday it's not much behind WSM, the level of art is inferior but it's a perfectly fully finished manga magazine where no one seems to be dying just to release a chapter, even Fujita & Rumiko at their 60's (Rumiko is 68!!!) are still drawing weekly manga with perfectly fine art, meanwhile newbies on Shonen Jump are already struggling with their 1st manga lol

But don't get me wrong, i'm not putting the blame in the authors, this is obviously Shonen Jump fault, i'm totally sure WSM schedule is waaay better than Jump, something that gives it away to me is how some new series on WSM has already the date of the first volume being promoted in like, the 3rd chapter, meanwhile on WSJ we only get to know the first volume of a manga after 10 chapters, this for me shows how more in advance WSM authors are with chapters release than WSJ authors which allow them way more time to properly finish the chapters, i think the competitive nature of Shonen Jump survey is unfortunately one of the reasons too, i think the editors wants to have the fastest way possible to react when they see something not working, like when some development is not being well received they want to be able to quickly do something about that, which they can only do when there's not much chapters already done or being planned, if you guys understand what i mean. Anyway, i really feel like WSJ should work to fix this, the problem it's not the weekly format, it's the magazine schedule and time given to the authors, WSM is the perfectly example of how authors can work perfectly fine in the weekly format without dying all the time or ruining their artstyle just to release stuff on time.

I wouldn't say every manga in wsm as ranger reject is on hiatus (not even the first hiatus it had), galaxias went magazine pocket due to health, gachiakuta has been taking far more breaks than before with shorter chapters, and I believe even the blue lock artist has mentioned getting sick a few times on twitter.
