Speaking of Under Doctor, it's introduced a bunch of other genius doctors but they still feel like they'll be largely one-off characters. I'm surprised the author hasn't attempted a new larger story arc, the first two action ones weren't received very well so it made sense at the time to try something different, but this content mostly hasn't been received well either.

Is it just going to do 'surgery of the week' until it gets cancelled? Part of me is wondering if the author's avoiding starting anything bigger out of worries it'll be cancelled before he can finish it. Saving the big ideas for his next try at a series or something.
There was not a long arc except for the one in which they help the boy and he becomes part of the group. IMO, they should have avoided going on the direction of battles and the light on the bodies stuff.

While we're on the topic of Under Doctor, it got another reprint.

YAY! (about that... is possible that it hit 10k sales of 2nd volume with that announced reprint?)

You probably missed it, but already was estimated by Shoseki around 10k, same as Roboco and Kiyoshi.

This is controversial because Kiyoshi sold like 8K in the first week on Oricon and Under Doctor position was under Kiyoshi by 10 posicions and Shoseki overestimated its sales by 2K, so we really don't know how much Under Doctor really sold. Could be between 6K and 8K.

I did not like Graykeith that much. Felt so much more like a one-shot than the start of a series too.

Great KGB and Akane chapters as well. Dess was so funny in Ichi 😂

Good news, like i said when the first days of vol 2 were posted, vol 1 keeps selling months after release so i think same would happen with vol 2 but in a much lesser extent ofc, and the series getting another reprint despite the big "drop" in sales shows that, not that this will save the series if it keep stuck forever in the bottom 3 but i think it shows that there's interest in it, the series has been, in my opinion, pretty good for a while since it dropped the battle stuff and definitely one of the most unique series on Jump right now, i think the magazine needs series like this in the middle of the action, comedy & romcom stuff, so i hope it can survive 🙏

It won't do a big arc unless sales/surveys continue declining. UD is a throwback to old Jump like City Hunter and other old Jump series. It's going to be episodic 1-4 chapter arcs.

Also I love one piece with all my heart and soul but the last few months have been a bit frustrating with the Elbaph battle portion and all of the breaks (just want to clarify I am not saying anything negative about Oda regarding the breaks btw). I just wish Oda could move the Elbaph arc along quicker. The past few chapters have been repetitive and it’s extra grueling with the recent breaks.

Weekly Shoseki Top 500 (8/31/26 - 9/6/26)
1. Kagurabachi #12
4. Kochikame #202
14. Class 2B Hero Destroyerz #1
22. Nue's Exorcist #16
26. Shinobi Undercover #9
38. Roku's House of Oddities #1 (5,670)

Obs: Gotta wait for Oricon but it's in line on how Hima-Ten usually performed on 3 days, Oricon will probably up the number to 6k!

Not exactly a trajectory I expect out of Roku who got an early second cover and everything.

All I know for sure is that from how the past few weeks have been and what the current lineup is, the next axe wave is gonna hurt. Genuinely every series in the magazine is good, maybe not good all the time but they all have some real juicy moments that make me appreciate them. If I had to pick a least favorite it’s probably either Animal Signal or 2B but even those have some strong moments, primarily with leveraging animal facts/gamer logic respectively for some good humor.

At this rate it seems like Under Doctor’s at serious risk and 2B will have to end to save Sorachi’s life, and now Cannon Master also seems to be getting written into a position like the axe was announced. Despite all that I’m still not able to sit comfortable thinking Hal Formula can survive in the long run, as much as I desperately want it to even more than Animal Signal.

If I had to make good comparisons length/vibe wise, it feels like UD is gonna get Astro Royale’d with a close-to year run (but not quite), and Cannon Master is gonna get Kaedegami’d, in the sense that it’ll be a U19 with very compelling main characters and amazing art. In fact, with that in mind, and with these Shoseki sales, I almost feel like Cannon and 2B might swap TOC places soon to let 2B sell a little more while it’s novel before it falls off (or not, if Sorachi keeps submitting late).

(Also man, I got real behind on messages the past few days and missed quite a bit…)

Phantom Seer was sacrificed so that Kiyoshi and Kagurabachi could live.
Phantom Seer isn't even close to Kiyoshi and Bachi in term of year...

You probably missed it, but already was estimated by Shoseki around 10k, same as Roboco and Kiyoshi.

What really bugs me isn’t that they reported 8k in the first week (even if that was just an estimate), or that we only sold 6k in that same period.
The real issue is that there isn’t a proper, clear breakdown of the data for all the volumes. Something like: “Hey, UNDERDOCTOR sold 6k in the first week, 3.1k in the second, 1.5k in the third, and 1k in the last week”, so an average fan could just say: “Okay, not the best start, but in a month it still managed to sell over 10k copies, it has potential let's read it”

Instead, we’ll only really know how many copies that title sold in its first month a couple of months from now

- - -

And here’s the problem: when people don’t have enough data, they start making these huge assumptions like: “Well, it did terribly on the ORICON charts and it’s not doing well in the ToC, so it’ll be canceled”, when in reality it sold 10k in its first month, got two reprints of the first volume and one of the second, and is just having a hard time in the magazine’s weekly rankings

The risk of not sharing enough data with the public (especially when a good 70% of people are toxic and can’t wait to see one series after another fail) is that nobody will even give that series a chance if they don’t know how many copies it actually sold

A lot of the new generation of manga fans are more into clout-chasing than actually reading

- - -

Ah, and one last thing (sorry for all the edits, but I’m dumb and need to reread things a few times to make myself clear): this whole thing doesn’t just apply to manga. It’s the same for movies, or any other kind of media where sales numbers are made public

The world is completely obsessed with numbers now. Nobody really cares about what’s actually on the pages of a manga or in the frames of a movie.
If a product sells well, people automatically assume it’s good; if it sells poorly, they immediately decide it’s trash

I truly doubt the people who read the magazine cares about sales that much. They only care about the voting system and such. That was the reason behind Astro Royale being cancelled on 50 chapters even as it sold like 17K on its last volume before the axe. It did poorly on ToC and its sales were dropping.
