Man, the next batch is going to be brutal.

Golden Future Cup is back in the Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #44 of 2026!!!

The classic one shot competition where the winner is granted a serialization is back with at least 3 contestants! More contestants will be revealed later! The first one will be published next issue already.

So I managed to uncover one out of the three authors in GFC. Turns out we know of the first candidate, Oku Takuo, thanks to many of his previous works:

He was a participant of last year's future jump project, being the eight author to debut the one shot named "Chikuwaga Okakoutou Gakkou Joureibu Tanjouhiwa" .

He also made a few one shots here and there in jump giga like "Urana Uranai".

Since I could not find raws for either one shot, I will go over memory and recall that his work on jump future was quite mediocre mostly cause of how the setting was done but I do recall that the dynamic between the two leads was talked about positively. God hope he has improved the story. Cause I have a feeling its likely going to be similar since it has two leads.

These one shots surely looks like the typical Golden Future Cup one shots we see every year

If you mean generic? I disagree mostly cause I like seeing new talent and what they can do. Something tells me that we are going to see a lot of opinions around this batch of one shots like a few years back when some were effectively against Invisible Blood winning, because the author has way too much experience, and others rooting for Signal all red. I guarantee we are going to witness a degree of debate around this once more.

The phy/dig ratio on some of these are crazy. happy to see orcsen doing decently in its second week.Hitoner phy/dig ratio seems kind of off though.

Signal seems to be doing decently if it's at least placed above nue in the middle. It's past the grace period new series get in the toc. Not getting the same weird treatment drawn to the fire got when it had its cp

Has the JP reception to the last SD arc been just as negative as it has been in the West? It’s still placing high on ToCs but the final boss fight has been weak as has the whole arc imo.

It seems to me that the new series are having a harder time to become popular than some time ago. Am I misremembering?

yeahh i agree with you... All the good series with a very good premise gets axed... The shonen cliché are successful.
jump doesn't give enough trust to new series and even reader, and that's sad. C'mon is like we are barely having 1 hit per year.
Some years ago we even had 4-5 successful series per year... like in 2012 or 2008

Just recently 2024 had 4 hits (Kiyoshi, Hima-ten, Ichi the Witch, Shinobigoto) and 2 more series that made it past a year before cancellation (Chojo, Astro Royale just barely). It's actually one of the better years Jump has had.

Jump just sometimes goes through periods of few hits like this. 2010 for example infamously had zero hits, and only one series to even make it past a year, then 2011 also had none until the very end of the year with Nisekoi (+ two other series to make it past a year). If you look back at the specific issue numbers, WSJ had no proper hits for a full 2.5 years between 2009 #24's Medaka Box and 2011 #48's Nisekoi.

At least we had a hit last year with Someone Hertz unlike in 2010. This year's not over yet but we should at least have Roku stick around and hopefully one or two more from the final couple batches. of 2026.

Looking at when Sakamoto, Akane & Witch Watch got their anime annuonced, vol 16, 17 & 17, no way Nue doesn't get the anime either on end of October / beginning of November with volume 17 release or in December with Jump festa before vol 18 releasing probably in January, if we get the Hertz, Kgb, Ichi & Shinobi anniversaries all in sequence, it would end on #47, so a cover & lead cp on #48 (Oct 26) or #49 (Nov 2) would be perfect, or they can either officially announce on Jump Festa with a cover & lead cp on issue #3 in Dec 21, a day after JF ends or like a week before on #2, my fear of getting announced on JF is them to pull another Yozakura case with not getting the cover.

But anyway, December is the limit, if doesn't get by December, i'm officially giving up

We will eventually know something on issue 44, since the Jump Festa Stages will be revealed.

See Saito making sure Shinobi and Kiyoshi get anime first just because

The 2025/2026 series they axed were almost all aiming to be very mainstream stories, not like they're axing hidden gems or niche stories.

Alien Headbutt was a battle manga with barely any plot.
Embers, Ekiden Bros, Harukaze Mound and Drawn to the Fire all felt like they tried to follow the sports manga template as much as possible and ended up all very bland.
Gonron Egg is straight up terrible and had nothing new to offer.
Osoegawa felt like it was designed by a committee and the author had the most barebones sauceless paneling and choreography of the last two years.

I would say the only two axed series that tried something more different from usual were Star of B and Ping Pong Peril and they both had strong amateurish aura in how inconsistent the art and plotting was. Still appreciate it and wouldn't mind if they stayed, but the lack of polish will obviously be a huge issue to survive in a magazine like Jump.

Not even saying you need to be weird to be good, I like Kaedegami and it was mostly down to execution and writing, but I disagree with the idea that they're axing high potential series.

I checked Witch Watch chapter count and volumes, this week chapter 262 that will be publish is the start of volume 31, and it will finish the volume on issue #52, kinda feels like very in sync for a finale:

WW Vol 31: 262 - 270 (Nov 16)

And i was think, for the next round, Shonen Jump, without the intention, has created one of the rare scenarios where they could actually start a round of 6 new series if they really want to push for it!

1. Drawn to the Fire spot
2. Sakamoto Days ending
3. Witch Watch ending
4. Cannon Master axed
5. Hal Formula axed
6. Either Under Doctor axed or use the 21st spot

It's not going to happen of course (neither i actually want it to happen), we're not 100% about WW, personally i don't think Hal is going this round and surely Under Doctor also doesn't feel like axed in November while being above the rest, but if they reaaally wanted to push for another "legendary" 6 new series, this would be their "best" moment where none of the cancelations would be out of nowhere lol

My guess is 3 new series, Sakamoto Days will end and only Cannon Master will be cancelled with Class 2B getting to live an extra round because Sorachi and Hal Formula also surviving by staying above it in 3rd place.

Even though I am biased because we got Someone Hertz out of it, 2024 was a bad year for Jump, this is true. But as tirakai said above, this was coming after 2024 which was objectively a great year for the magazine, and 2023 was pretty good too. (Plus personally I like Nue and Kagurabachi way more than any of the 2024 serializations, but thats irrelevant to the matter at hand.) Its also way too early to judge 2026. Roku is definitely sticking around, and Under Doctor and 2B have the potential to make it to their 1st anniversaries at least, despite poor rankings, and thats just from the first two batches of the year. Animal Signal looks like it has potential, and its a bit soon to say Hal Formula is definitely dead. Its sad because I like it, but Cannon Master is the only one from the third batch this year that seems to be down for the count. Way too soon to judge this most recent batch, but Ura had a positive response, and while the response to Graykeith may have been underwhelming in comparison to its batchmate, it definitely wasn't negative either. And then we still have another upcoming batch of likely 3-4 series that we can't judge at all yet. I think we will likely see 2 or 3 2026 serializations survive in the long run, and probably more than that make it to a year. Or maybe I'm wrong and in a year's time Roku will be the only one left standing.

On a side note, my cope for Nue is that they want to give it the cover for the anime announcement so they're waiting until after the group cover and all the September anniversaries, but didn't want to wait anymore on the popularity poll results. I will save my cursing for Saito for when it doesn't get the cover for the anime announcement, or we don't get an anime announcement at all this year.

So recall I could not find the works of the last two authors for GFC? Well turns out, Shinuki got the name wrong for the second author, in fact, its the one author you were talking about that you felt was more than prepared to launch a series. Do you recall the Kitsune one shot from Giga Spring 2026? He is the author for the second one shot of Golden Future Cup and his name is Jou Tanakura not Jo Tanakura:

As for the last author that was mentioned in Kuroko Sai, he actually started last year with a one shot called Toshi Lifesavers. But his one recent work was a one shot named Heroing that debuted this year in Jump Giga Winter 2026, which shinuki compared the work to that of someone deeply inspired by My Hero Academia.
