WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP THREAD RULES​

#5. Don't post news about series from other magazine or publishers in the WSJ thread, post in the series own thread, but it's fine if you're mentioning other series or magazine to express a opinion or reflection about Shonen Jump.
#6. Any tweet, specially japanese, about news, update or some interesting thing about the magazine or series has to come with a text of what that tweet means and also be on topic, if not it's going to be either deleted or i will edit the post.
#7. Refrain from self advertising or advertising Youtubers videos in the comments.
#8. Constant fanart posts just for the sake of praising a favorite series is prohibited, this rule doesn't apply for official art by Jump artists posted on social media, they're fine to post.
#9. Don't discuss or hype chapter spoilers before Sunday release, only comment if is related to a series surviving status and do it only inside the spoiler tag.
#10. Regarding rule #9, an exception will be made for when we have new series, in this case, spoilers will be allowed only for the first 3 chapters of a new series for the users who are interested in knowing informations and details about the new series, these spoilers will obviously be kept under tags to protect anyone that doesn't want to be spoiled, so don't worry about it.

Am I a bad person if I said I would’ve voted yes? (I saw the pop-up on M+, but skipped it because I wanted to read manga first)

Honestly, this would be a great idea if they can figure out how to prevent inflated votes (i.e., bots).……

The problem with allowing votes from Manga+ is people would vote boost. Obviously you can do that in Japan, but each survey comes from a purchase, so the people voting multiple times are spending money multiple times. But Manga+ is free. I guess they could limit it to people paying for a subscription?

Anyway as for the chapters this week, I also definitely liked ch 2 of Graykeith a lot more, this chapter felt like it more properly showed off the uniqueness of the translator premise after the first chapter just being an excuse for fights. I hope we get more like this.

Class 2B being serious for a change was refreshing. I can't help but think it's an emergency shift in response to low rankings, and I'm not sure how it'd work considering you need people to actually care about the characters for a serious story to work but I appreciate the effort at least.

I think that’s a fair idea, and have it priced in different tiers for value, kind of what Patreon users have.

I'm glad we got an full chapter for a non-Gakuro fight in Nue finally, they're weirdly rare considering how large the core cast is.

I also enjoyed Hal Formula delving into the company politics this week. I hope this series can at least survive a round or two because there's a lot of thought put into it.

Witch Watch definitely will not be ending alongside Sakamoto Days, I could see it reaching ch 300 for sure assuming it does more episodic and wrap-up content after all the action as well.

I’m hooked on watching Tokyo MER while working. As expected, Kitami Sensei and Otowa Sensei are the best!


The Ura Files (Shun Numa)

The pattern on Ura’s ribbon is a shippo pattern. Shippo means “seven treasures” in Japanese. The treasure part sounds oni coded.


Witch Watch (Kenta Shinohara)

If you add Sket Dance into it, I’ve written comments here 550 times. Yet I never have anything to write about.


Animal Signal (Robinson Haruhara)

I did the Escape from Kisaragi Station game with my friends. We successfully escaped.

I saw a wild boar family crossing the road at night. It’s been five years since then.

I went to a Kvi Baba live show! The atmosphere was amazing from start to finish, and it was all so great!

I believe this survey for Manga+ is a non-issue, but I'd like to raise a few questions/points related to the app.

I believe they already get a ton of info from the app. Views are probably correlated with rankings. Of course, it's not one-to-one, as we know from some series that are probably highly ranked even though they are not the most read in Japan (like Akane). But it's likely that for Manga+ that correlation would be stronger (IMO).

They probably also get the data of how much time people spend reading a chapter, if they read until the end/to which page they go, maybe even how much time they get in every page if they are data-freaks. If they don't, they probably could if they wanted to.

I don't know if they get age, gender, etc, but I won't ever doubt one app's ability of extracting the most info from the users as possible.

As someone that votes in these surveys too, I'm mixed on it. I've never cared about the notion some people have of thinking JP readers having some greater media literacy than the rest of the world. At the same time though, I can see it getting out of hand by expanding it's scope so wide.

It's not about thinking JP readers have some greater media literacy, but that manga magazines are strictly produced with japanese taste in mind and made to reflect only their taste in the results, once you start including people from not only Japan but all the other continents with completely different tastes things are just bound to not work well, not to mention the problems already mentioned inside the western community as the rampant toxicity and fan wars.

I don't know; a good portion of your posts do nothing but highlight that the manga's sales are dropping, that people don't like the current arc, and that Jump doesn't pay much attention to it.

So you only pay attention when i point it out once in a lifetime that Kagurabachi had a big sudden drop and that jp readers aren't enjoying a arc much but not when i say the same thing about all the other series?

I don't know where you got the idea that Undead Unluck survived because editors thought it was too good to let it go, the series was popular from the 1st ranking lol

I really don't, why they should do that? We're not even paying for this, we read for free, also these series are not made for us, the idea of forcing a unpopular manga in Japan to stay on Jump because westerns on MP sounds like a recipe for disaster, it will piss off their readersbase in Japan since it's a manga that they don't support getting shoved down their throats while other they enjoy is potentially axed, it will also make the western community more unbearable that they already are with treating Jump mangas like a horse race, fanbases will get 10x more toxic with trying to influence/rig Manga Plus views/survey for their fave new series to survive and will hate even harder in the other series that survive, seriously i can't find a single positive thing on this

My point more so is WSJ will not have a direct one to one survey vote for non JP but it’d be useful for data keeping purposes to evaluate unique situations like overseas infatuation for series that are on the border of survival. If the outside world showed a lot of love to series with flaws but massive potential like a MMYY or a Red Hood maybe it survives another batch and if it does survive maybe JP shows more interest to it and if that happens then maybe the series is kept longer. Essentially, it would work the same way winning an award would work: it buys the series another round or two to see if it can take off in Japan. The editors can view it as a series with potential to be big in Japan. They’re not doing it for every series, but those unique cases.

Like I said above, Shueseia should not and would not keep clearly unpopular series like Alien Headbutt just because it had some love in the west; however, maybe some series like I mentioned above or even something like Fabricant 100 that had a more western vibe and setting are able to get some more consideration which is good for diversifying the magazines potential settings (à la the exorcism action complaints.

I think they should have done this to Embers and Dear Anemone. When those were being published, countless western fans were praising those. They surely had potential, you know. I can guarantee they would grow really high had they had 100 chapters or so.

To be fair, I think every single series should get to 100 chapters if they have an western fanbase. They should not axe anything if they get to 1K likes on a random post on Twitter or even if they get to 1K views on MangaPlus.

I think WSJ needs to figure out the right ratio of Western/Domestic votes to decide whether a series is worth keeping around.

But more than anything, they really need better editors who can spot talents that understand storytelling. I don’t know what exactly the backgrounds of these editors are prior to entering the workforce but it would be nice if one or two of them came with bonafide literature degrees.

Almost everything in Jump has potential, they wouldn't run a series they thought was hopeless. Even Nice Prison over time could've potentially figured out how to good gag battles and become a new Bobobo. Even the most copy-paste, unremarkable battle shounen could've eventually introduced an absolutely fantastic new character or pulled off an arc that totally flips everything on its head.

Lamenting the loss of a series because 'it had potential' is totally worthless argument.
