No worries. I mean if I did a nue review I know you might have my head for it even though am not really good at reviews at all, even my jump giga reviews feel a bit too heavy. So go for it, don't be ashamed of your opinion even if it might piss people like myself off.

So you only pay attention when i point it out once in a lifetime that Kagurabachi had a big sudden drop and that jp readers aren't enjoying a arc much but not when i say the same thing about all the other series?

Anyway, here we go with another boring break week...

I mean. I am still waiting for your Summer Jump Giga Review. Since you tend to be quite entertaining when you make them. I still remember how much frustration you had for the last one, since it was mostly exocist themed ones.

It would simply make no sense to keep a manga in the physical magazine just because it has a following in the west. Sure we could have another case like Kagurabachi where it goes viral in the west and that leads to it getting more attention from Japanese readers despite their initially lukewarm response, but that already worked out under the current system. The best case scenario for a series that is well received in the west but remains unpopular in Japan would be to move it to Jump+ so we don't have a series taking up room in the actual magazine that no one buying it is reading. Also if they're going to treat Mangaplus votes different then why even say you "get a vote in the Weekly Shonen Jump survey"? Its just misleading. If they wanted to gauge if a series is worth not outright cancelling because it has an overseas audience, they should do a separate weekly Mangaplus survey.

On a semi-related note, this does remind me of something I was thinking about writing a post about recently. Why has Jump not tried to give some of the better performing but ultimately axed series a second chance on Jump+? They only tried this once over a decade ago with iShoujo, at a time when both Jump+ and the webmanga industry as a whole was in a completely different place than it is today. Even if it was a complete failure, it seems odd to give up after one try, and especially it would be worth trying again with how much the industry has changed since. But it clearly wasn't a failure, iShoujo+ ran for 14 volumes! Including the 3 volumes from its original run in Jump, that puts it at a respectable 17 volume run. And yet ever since the only Jump+ moves we've seen have been successful series with unique circumstances. There are plenty of series that stick around on Jump+ with worse sales than axed manga from the main magazine, just seems odd to not even give it a try.

Again, Jump+ is NOT a dumping ground for failed series. It is its own publication with its own stuff. It does not need to have the reputation as where failed people go.

It is genuinely insulting for all the works published there to be treated as a second tier club

Almost everything in Jump has potential, they wouldn't run a series they thought was hopeless. Even Nice Prison over time could've potentially figured out how to good gag battles and become a new Bobobo. Even the most copy-paste, unremarkable battle shounen could've eventually introduced an absolutely fantastic new character or pulled off an arc that totally flips everything on its head.

Lamenting the loss of a series because 'it had potential' is totally worthless argument.
That’s reductive of the point; let’s not pretend Gonron Egg and mage next door had the same level of potential as GGG or Red Hood. The point I’m trying to say is Mamayuyu sold way more than most axed series when it got axed. It had a lot of positive impressions from JP audience in particular for the first chapter. That is a series that, having a strong international reception, could’ve been a point in the serialization meeting that may give it another round. Phantom seer is another such example. Will it have an 100% hit rate? No, but GFC hasn’t produced anything that lasted more than a round in a decade plus, but it’s still worth the effort to explore different avenues.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Jump’s processes, but I think we sometimes overestimate Jump’s data collection especially when it comes to the west. To me, this is a way to slowly gather data. Maybe it impacts how the popularization and globalization of manga (and frankly my desire of having near instantaneous physical volume release and being able to save the occasional series with massive potential that we have all lamented it’s loss before on here). It’s something Jump has to be supremely careful and conservative of (more so on serialization side of things; I still think it’s supremely stupid that translated physical volumes are not near simultaneous release when it’s popular) but there’s no harm on collecting data as a step one.

Gonron Egg was absolutely packed full of potential, it just had bad art. It was very ambitious with a cool world and a grand scale, its biggest problem was the creator was not good enough of an artist to portray anything close to what he wanted. If he was paired up with someone actually able to draw all of it well it could've been fantastic. It certainly showed a lot more promise than Red Hood which, in 15 chapters, repeated the first chapter again then did the worst most pointless training arc ever. Sure it promised a lot, but it didn't even try to deliver on anything. Gonron at least tried to show off its future potential, the author just couldn't draw it (also tbh Red Hood was just as bad at action even if the general art was better).

Because Jump+ has its own identity separate from WSJ. Sure there's cancelled series from WSJ that could probably could've done well there, and others that maybe should've run on Jump+ to begin with, but that would also result in it getting a reputation as a place for series not good enough to make it in regular Jump.

Manga gets transferred from WSM to Magazine Pocket, and from Young Magazine to Yanmaga Web, and it's no big deal. But because this is Jump, people are like, "Noooo, we have to DESTROY and BURN everything that didn't survive in Jump, or better yet, shoot the author".

Manga gets transferred because of other issues, not because it is on the verge of being cancelled.

And WSJ is a significantly larger magazine as a result. Even with it falling over time, WSJ's physical circulation right now is probably more than every other weekly manga magazine combined (the only one we don't have numbers for is Weekly Shounen Champion I think, but I can't imagine it's incredibly high).

Jump being so cutthroat and competitive is a large part of what makes it stand out. If they let everything survive into the 40s because 'it might have potential' it would be a very different and much more stagnant publication.

Idolatry, Dead Account and several other series from WSM were transferred instead of being canceled, while series are transferred from Young Magazine to Yanmaga constantly, practically every month.

So you think Gonron Egg should have gone to Jump Plus, then?

Nah, some people have this weird "elitism" about J+ as if the platform is not already pretty much a "All Shueisha" platform where everything from WSJ gets published there, from flop to hits.

There's a difference between wanting a complete flop to be moved and wanting a series that is selling okay/decent but simply not doing "enough" to keep on Jump but could work perfectly fine on J+, case in point Chojo, i would argue that even stuff like Kinato selling the amount it sold could move there, there's no such thing as "It is genuinely insulting for all the works published there as a second tier club" lol no one cares about these things, they're all authors just working the hell out to make some money and live their life, not a bunch of nerds in a Forum arguing about rankings :grin

Cases like Junket Blank are great examples of how series can not only be saved but turn into actual popular series by moving to or getting a simulpub on Plus.

But again, don't take this as me saying stuff like Alien Headbutt could've been big if moved to there lmao!

I think WSJ physical circulation is going to start dropping a lot faster now. I have a feeling that Shueisha was doing everything in their power to try and keep it up above a million (because it is good PR) but now that it's dropped under it, there's no real need to print more copies each week especially as the ceiling for sales of popular series in the magazine not named One Piece has dropped a lot.

I think both things are true:

* Jump+ should not be a dumping ground for failed WSJ series and they mostly won't find better success there if they couldn't do it in Jump

* They should look at individual cases and not act like a transfer should only happen once every 10 years

Chojo is a good example in that it had close physical sales numbers to Kiyoshi, a bigger digital share and a cult fanbase. Maybe it was right to take it out of WSJ, but if the fanbase is already mostly online, a transfer to J+ would be fine. It's popular enough to be there.

Should be very rare cases though. I can't even think of other cases that would make sense right now. Maybe Cipher Academy? Sales were close to the survival line and Nisio fans are probably online enough for a transfer to go smoothly.

Gonron's author also cannot write on top of drawing btw. Even if he got paired with a good artist it will still fail due to how bland everything is (characters, writing, lines, plot)

Rumour about people not liking Kagurabachi's current arc is disappointing. We are now at one of the best characterization stretch that the manga has. And not like it lacks action. No wonder a lot of shonen manga suffers from lack of downtime. Most shonen manga fans has the attention span of goldfish and just want constant hype and aura. Sigh

What i read is that is because there's no Chihiro in the arc.
