I’m pretty sure Chihiro being a single-minded and straightforward “bland” protagonist is kind of the point. This kid has given up all semblance of a normal life in pursuit of revenge to the point of forgetting about anything else that matters, especially his own well being and the consequences to those around him getting involved. We even see the direct impact this has on Hakuri, who, out of a desire to be useful to such a straightforward and revenge-driven guy, is willing to keep giving himself potentially irreversible brain damage.

A lot of the series characters are people who are plagued by absolutes, and Chihiro stands at the forefront of them; only once Iori showed up did he get to glimpse into the world of someone who’s teetering the balance between the world of a normal life and a life stained with bloodshed. Even when Chihiro’s direct goal changes there’s still pure revenge fueling him, and it’s the collision of that absolute force and other differing, sometimes also, absolute forces, that characterize the series.

Sojo will absolutely reach Kunishige’s control of Datenseki and do anything toward that goal. Kyora will absolutely proceed the auction and do anything towards that. Hiyuki will absolutely not let immense power go unregulated. Akemura will, and did, absolutely wipe out all of Shokoku to protect Japan.

Some of these absolutes have been fulfilled, while some of them have been shattered (particularly the villains, by the strength of Chihiro’s own absolute), and some altered but still ongoing/present. Now in the immediate moment, Chihiro’s absolute has been thwarted, but it does not seem to have shaken him; where will this take him?

TL;DR, Kagurabachi is a story about absolutes in the form of characters, and what happens when those absolutes either clash with each other or are influenced by less absolute people.

(that does technically make it, in a very literal sense, absolute cinema)

Revenge isn't bad or boring but Chirhiro as a character is pretty bland and boring. That is the crux of the discussion we have been having. Revenge in itself isn't good or bad perse, but the character (the Main Character) that ends up being reduced to a plot device due to it is bad.
Not all comments are good/positive comments. It could be that people were online complaining about those 2 chapters. I do not personally know but the number of comments doesn't always equate to a positive reaction or reception.
I never read the manga or watch the original anime. I am quite interested given the buzz about it.
The thing with reborn is it’s a gag manga for the first like 7 volumes. It’s not like revolutionary or groundbreaking and has plenty of flaws (kind of a sudden ending and never really delivers on certain character development and romance things. However it was always a fun time and had good characters.

Silly and goofy isn't a signifier of personality. Nor was that anything I was using to say he is bland and basic. The author really hasn't written him to be anything other than a brooding revenge driven MC. We know literally nothing else about him, what he likes or dislike, what he'll do after achieving said revenge. I am judging a character that feels like a plot device rather than a person living in the world the author is creating.

Edit: Maybe, I am wrong and missing something here. What do you feel is strong about his personality and characterization? If we strip away the revenge part what is left of the character Chihiro?
Strip away his desire for vengeance and what’s left of Chihiro is someone who is deeply emotional and highly empathetic toward others. His compassion isn’t limited to people he knows or agrees with.

Straight out of ch 1, he was willing to talk out with the yakuzas and strike out a deal before changing his mind when he saw them publicly lynching people in the city.

He gives Char food and goes out of his way to make sure she gets to an orphanage. (Like shiba have said, Chihiro is good at taking care of people.)

With Sojo, he shows a willingness to engage with Sojo’s conflicting understanding of Kunishige rather than simply dismissing him as a monster.

You can see this even more clearly with Samura. Samura has a fundamentally different view of Kunishige. He doesn't necessarily blame Kunishige as a person for creating the enchanted blades, but he still believes that their creation and use ultimately led to something terrible. Chihiro doesn't simply dismiss Samura's perspective because it concerns his father. He actually has to grapple with that criticism and reconcile it with his own understanding of Kunishige.

Even his reaction upon finding out his father's killer is telling. After being overwhelmed by a flood of thoughts, his immediate response is to break down and ask why they killed him. It'a not anger his showing. It's grief and confusion to why they want his father killed.

Chihiro’s character is driven by revenge but he isn't consumed by it. His vengeance is part of his character, not the entirety of it. To say that Chihiro’s character has almost nothing beyond his desire for revenge is, frankly, an absolutely moronic interpretation of his character.

Why would anyone be envious towards Kagurabachi here?

There are imperfections like the "It'a", non capitalized shiba, and more, so no. Labelling something as AI generated just because someone actually wanted to word/structure the arguement decently is genuinely disrespectful

You’re right I apologize, that’s genuinely the initial vibe I got but you put effort into the post. I’ll be more careful for that in the future

As far as I'm concerned, the era of series selling a million or more copies per volume right out of the gate is over.

As for *Kagurabachi*, if the anime becomes a massive hit, I think it’ll be on the level of *DanDaDan*—if things go well.

My bet is studio Pierrot+ / Signpost
2 seasons of 24-26 episodes each either split cours for each arc or straight. They have the same director of the original anime and Kingdom can gain more space.

I agree with you, several comments on the last page are quite surprising. Beneath that obvious, stoic facade, he's a very compassionate character, which is evident in Char's arc, and how he acts and interacts with her, and how he reacts to other people.

In that case, I think Hokazono did a pretty bad job of introducing him, imo.

You wanna know who I compare him to the most? Goblin Slayer. A (near-) robotic, vengeful warrior obsessed with wiping out an entire race because of his horribly traumatic experience at their hands. And yet, I favor him over Chihiro. Why? Because in the first 5 chapters (of the manga, I didn’t even know it was a LN adaptation at first!), you get an immediate sense of his true character underneath that suit of armor and what the story is trying to tell about him.

Goblin Slayer isn’t a story about an obsessed warrior being a hyper-efficient mass slaughterer. It’s about a young boy slowly rediscovering his humanity and breaking free of his trauma. What’s more, a strong supporting cast being established fairly early on really helped.

Hokazono didn’t offer that. Granted, part of that was due to the necessity of needing to be “flashy” early on to establish a foothold in the lineup. Nevertheless, the first thing I‘m always looking for in a story is what it wants to tell us through its characters.

If you’re happy with Chihiro’s development, more power to you. But I don’t regret one bit about dropping the series early on because it failed to hook me from the start.
