He's not surpassing them. He's going to assist so they can take the CB's down kinda like the dragonized earth energy for Erza. Elfman is their dragonized earth energy it seems.

Mashima gave Mira Laxus-like durability in this chapter.

Also this is what each of the S Class did with Wendy's power before Erza absorbed the power from the dragonized earth to win.

I also saw people quoting Mashima talking about Natsu not being able to beat Laxus, Gildarts and Erza. Mashima also said the original scaling remains and we saw what that scaling was. I would say Jellal subs for Mystogan here and Mira is included rounding out the S class.

Laxus/Erza > Mira. But she's definitely could be close to them now.

Laxus/Erza > Mira. But she's definitely could be close to them now.
What are you basing her being 'close' to them on and what are you basing her not being equal to them on, then?

Because if we have enough to say she's 'close' then we need something crucial to make the distinction 'but not equal to them'.

Why would Mashima make her close but not equal to her childhood rival, love interest and fellow S class mages?

We can't argue feats anymore since her latest feat has her injuring 2 Calamity Bloods simultaneously and saving Laxus himself in the process; we have her tanking the same moves as Laxus side by side and being equally injured. We also can't say she can match their peak but has stamina issues because Alegria which drained a lot of power is being used casually. We can argue Mashima talking about Erza being the strongest woman but then there is the issue of him also saying the original scaling stands and strongest title failing to block someone from being a rival to the strongest in these types of series (I recall a naruto manga intro stating Naruto is the strongest ninja in the leaf and then Sasuke's saying he is the only ninja who can match Naruto, for example).

There is also the case: Erza and Laxus are considered equals/considered more or less equal by Mashima but we saw her fall first and get up last vs Laxus who carried her around and zapped fodder. Coversely, Erza vs Erza had them falling the same time and breaking their peak gear simultaneously against one another.

So are we saying Mira would do worse than that vs either one of them, hypothetically?

Despite what people think I personally feel that, without Macro or other hax working, Mira vs Laxus would end probably like Erza vs Laxus because despite it being a virtual tie, Laxus came out a smidge better. Laxus vs Jura, spriggan and Kirin being labeled the strongest always had him look a little bit better than Erza without POF backing her and of course Laxus vs Erza itself. This also helped Jellal in the past given his feats against Jura, spriggan etc.

On a side note I just noticed we have instances of Erza matching Laxus' attack and Mira matching Laxus' defense in 100 years quest.

Other side note: Jellal's bind snake and Mira's macro give them hax advantages against Erza, Laxus and even Gildarts, funny enough.

Well because Mashima just recently stated Erza was the strongest woman and Laxus is more or less her equal. Even though Mira definitely got an upscale she can't be considered their equal because she's canonically weaker even if it's not by much.

By Mashima statements he doesn't see Mira in a group with them tbh. He group Erza, Laxus and Gildarts twice together as the strongest guild members and only people who can beat non protagonist boost Natsu.
Of course the statement of "Laxus or Mira" the strongest would be in the middle. But that's was before Laxus got a huge power up. Which put him directly on Gildarts level.

I would need Mira to definitely get a power up to consider them actually equal since she is canonically weaker than them including Alergia.

Regarding the calamity bloods, Mira throwing scissor was spectacular! Hopefully it drops the Lucy and Wendy are stronger than Mira bs. But for Erza, it's highly likely Motherglare is much stronger than scissor runner. With Laxus against Levia he was only in base form matching dragon form Levia.
Of course Mira feat is way more impressive but she was in her strongest form while Laxus was in his weakest.
I definitely need to see more Mira feats against scissor to suggest she's actually their equal or a power up to show she's actually gotten stronger.

(I didn't say Wendy's boost since all of them got it lol)

In conclusion, Erza and Laxus directly got power ups that put them on par with Gildarts (Enchantments and TDK). Before they were weaker, and could be relative (Mira or Laxus statement). Mira got her Alergia but she's needs a power up too actually put her on that level since she hasn't gained no new powers that pushes her to another level (Gildarts tier).
For ex: let's say Gray and Gajeel were stated to be equals and on par. Then later Gray gets a power that pushes him to a new tier. While Gajeel hasn't shown anything new yet. Most people wouldn't consider them equals anymore unless Gajeel got a power up too.

He was refering to the general power balance as well. Those 3 are examples. We even had an example of the original power scaling in the manga.

That makes 0 sense. Mashima compared her Jellal and Laxus only for her to get surpassed and never keep up again? Also she got the Daemon's takeover just like Erza got new armors, Laxus got elexion's soul and Jellal showed us Orion. Mira also can use Alegria for an extended period with no drain. That is a power up.

Furthermore this chapter debunks this since her Alegria form is keeping up with Laxus notably in defense.

So she also passively powered up.

That's not proven anywhere i.e. that Motherglare is stronger than Scissor Runner or even Levia... so it's not highly likely. You can't even assume based on her being Erza's opponent because Laxus is involved and his opponent was at first Levia. Scissor Runner is a duo with Levia and has been since the GMG so it's actually highly likely Scissor Runner and Levia are peers. Even then, Scissor Runner is also Laxus' opponent as him and Mira are now sharing so unlikely Erza's dragon is stronger than Laxus'. Funny thing is, too, Mira has injured both dragons with her attack.

Laxus has Elexion's soul already so this is powered up Laxus. He is not attacking which is what red lighting is, an attack not a defensive power. So Mira's Alegria matched Laxus' defense while in possession of Elexion's soul and as a lighting dragon king. Offensively her throwing Scissor Runner and smashing him into Levia which hurt both dragons is more impressive than him matching Levia's punch so we still didn't see her compare to Laxus' peak: Thunder Dragon King's Red Lightning which is his strongest attack since it combines Elexion's power with Red Lightning.

Mira got Daemon's power, and is maintaining Alegria without any sign of any drain so these are power ups so by your logic the Mira OR Laxus statement stands.

The fact that Mashima presented the CB's as equal threats and assigned each of the available S class mages to fight them is telling
; the fact that Mira saved Lazus and hurt 2 of them at the same time shows her scaling. His intentions are clear.
Mira - Scissor Runner
Laxus- Levia
Erza- Motherglare

And as I said Mira and Laxus are sharing dragons too so unless Motherglare is above all the dragons... Mira is on this level too.

He said it's hasn't changed much. Not that it was the exact same. One example of this Erza. Erza was portrayed an entire level below Gildarts the entire series. Now Mashima has put her on that level.
We would have to see how strong her daemon power up is before to assume she's on the level.
It's good up she can keep her Alergia for longer but it doesn't pushes her to a whole new tier.

Mira got ignored twice when calling the strongest people of the guild. "Gildarts, Laxus, and Erza."
And only them 3 regular Natsu can't beat in a one and one fight. Not Mira.
Then when someone asked if Erza is the strongest person in the guild, he only brought Laxus and Gildarts. He also said "she's the strongest woman. What more do you want her to be." It's obvious he sees Erza as the strongest woman without a contender.
After Laxus and Erza got power up, he makes it clear their on par with Gildarts. Mira hasn't any indication she's on that level too. At the moment, she can be on Red lightning Laxus level.

Reading fairy tail, Erza opponent was always stronger than Mirajane's. That has been the same in all of fairy tail. The only time it wasn't was Kyoka and Seliah.
the calamity bloods are not equal unless stated otherwise. Even some feats suggest some are stronger than others. Erza always faces the strongest or second strongest in a villain group. But this time, Mashima even implied Erza would be facing the leader this time.
I consider Mira strong asf second strongest woman just not on their level,
