The world won't last that long. The LHC will destroy us at any minute, creating a black hole from which sinister demons such as Lucifer, Hitler, and Taft will spew forth from and destroy all of creation.

/sarcasm.

I dont believe that is going to happen, and even it does the world ends and thats that, fearing 'the end' isnt how life should be celebrated.

I think that 2012 will be about as bad for our world as Y2k was.

None of this are true.

If I remember correctly from what I've learned in Latin American History, there are two or maybe three theories to this.

The first is that the Mayans thought that "time" is cyclical. So presumably, after 2012, begins a new era, or "age", and the cycle repeats.

The second theory is that the Mayans, who carved their calendars in glyphs, you can understand, is in itself a difficult undertaking. When we create our calendar to last our entire lifetime, probably even for our children and grandchildren, at a certain point, you say to yourself, "wait a minute....this calendar will last at least several generations. I'll end at this random date, and if my successors need to create more calendars for themselves, they can do it by themselves."

So it's presumed that the Mayans created their calendar system, that will last them several generations, but they stopped at a random date, in this case, 2012, because they figured...they've done quite enough calendars that should probably last them for a while. Why create more?

And then there's the third theory, which has become very popular, and that is the alleged "doomsday". There currently are not enough credible historical evidence to support this, and not to mention, that the Mayan language is very difficult to decipher. The Mayan language does not have a standardized system....they vary in virtually successive generations, and so it gets really confusing...for example, the letter A will evolve into at least five different shapes/forms within a century...or something like that. And that letter "A" will look starkly different from each other, coming from a foreign observer.

I know of a particular group, the Aztecs, who in fact believed in a "redeemer" date, a date when a person would come, either rescue the Aztecs, or bring about their destruction. This god is Quetzalcoatl.....unfortunately, they were mistaken to assume Hernan Cortez was this supposed "white" God. And the Aztecs and the Mayans have very similar, if not, overlapping cultural connections. But as far as the Mayans go, I doubt very much that they themselves subscribed to the "doomsday" theory....it's more likely that their calendar was either "cyclical", or just an arbitrary end date because they simply got tired of creating glyphs that will last them way beyond their own lifetime.

My bet was on 1999 A.D.
But Lavos let me down.

Anything outside our normal suspension of belief would completely make my life. I'm a jaded dude, so I dunno, alien contact, magic, Gundams. Ok ok you got me, I just want to live in a manga. Will the Mayan doomsday really occur? Probably not, but it'll be a pretty fun thing to hype up in the upcoming years.

Reference from one of the BEST RPG's on SNES noted.

In the end (or not), we're just gonna have to wait and see what happens.

will it be like Evangelion? I mean will there be like a first and second impact that will annihilate half the earth's population?
Put my life in the hands of a kid like Ikari Shinji? Hell no!

@True Blade: I think you could blame Crono and team.

you mean the world will rewind itself? isnt quetzacoatl a Guardian force in FF7?

Quetzalcoatl (Classical Nahuatl: Quetzalcōhuātl pronounced [ke.ʦal.ˈkoː.waːtɬ]) is an Aztec sky and creator god. The name is a combination of quetzal, a brightly colored Mesoamerican bird, and coatl, meaning serpent. The name was also taken on by various ancient leaders. Due to their cyclical view of time and the tendency of leaders to revise histories to support their rule, many events and attributes attributed to Quetzalcoatl are exceedingly difficult to separate from the political leaders that took this name on themselves.[1] Quetzalcoatl is often referred to as The Feathered Serpent and was connected to the planet Venus. He was also the patron god of the Aztec priesthood, of learning and knowledge.[2] Today Quetzalcoatl is arguably the best known Aztec deity, and is often thought to have been the principal Aztec god. However, Quetzalcoatl was one of several important gods in the Aztec pantheon along with the gods Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopochtli.

Several other Mesoamerican cultures are known to have worshipped a feathered serpent god: At Teotihuacan the several monumental structures are adorned with images of a feathered serpent (Notably the so-called "Citadel and Temple of Quetzalcoatl"[3]). Such imagery is also prominent at such sites as Chichén Itza and Tula. This has led scholars to conclude that the deity called Quetzalcoatl in the Nahuatl language was among the most important deities of Mesoamerica.[4]

The god Quetzalcoatl was sometimes conflated with Topiltzin Ce Acatl Quetzalcoatl, a semi-legendary 10th century Toltec ruler.

I been thinking lately that Barack Obama is seriously the anti chris, these suspicions originated when i read the Left Behind book series i soon after heard about barack obama (This was like 2 years ago) and its all coincidence that like alot of this about obama coincide with things that the left behind series says and his presidency will end in 2012 presumable if he wins reelection, which he probably will. but if the world is going to end then This is like a prohecy or a warning or something, its wierd if listen to it.
